Red & White has some of the best sandwiches in town.
RED & WHITE MARKET WORDS: ERIC KLIER PHOTOS: JT RHOADES Established in 1959, Red & White Market is a family-owned operation that’s been feeding locals for over 50 years. Located on Vista Way and the iconic Pacific Coast Highway, Red & White is a staple of South Oceanside living. In the last decade, Oceanside has gone through some major changes, and lucky for us— Red & White Market has stayed its classy self. The walls are adorned with pictures of what Oceanside and the market looked like in the early 1960s. Not much has changed—it’s still familyowned and operated, and most of the employees have been there for over a decade. Besides having a great craft beer selection and wide variety of wine, they also have an unbelievable deli and their sandwiches are famous with locals. This is a full-service deli with generous meat cuts and some great seafood as well. They also have great produce that’s always vibrant and fresh. The “mom and pop” vibe makes it easy to ask questions, and the great employees like Gayle (she knows every person’s THEOSIDER.COM
name that walks through the door) will guide you in the right direction. On Friday nights, they have a BBQ that features unbelievable chicken and a wide variety of meats and salads. If you don’t feel like cooking or happen to be just driving by, the BBQ won’t disappoint. They also have fresh flowers that are locally arranged into beautiful bouquets. If you are here on vacation, they have all of your needs covered—from snacks and drinks to Tri-Tip, meats, and great produce. As you can tell, this isn’t your average market and deli—it’s a local institution where sons, fathers, daughters, and mothers have all grown up with and enjoyed. It’s a place where friends meet and are made and it’s also where families go because of it’s consistency and convenience. It’s no secret that Oceanside has a deep local community and Red & White has embraced this from day one over 50 years ago. I’m sure people wouldn’t be surprised if it’s there for another half century. 18

WORDS: ERIC KLIER PHOTOS: CHRISTOPHER DONEZ
Oceanside has some of the most consistent waves in San Diego County and has produced famous surfers such as Phil Edwards, Chuy Reyna, Jeremy Heit, and Jason Bennett, among others. John Daniels at Learn To Rip Surf Lessons is carrying the torch and has turned his passion for surfing into a career by offering surf lessons, surf coaching, and group clinics. With our diverse coastline featuring the municipal pier and famous harbor, John has a wide area to focus on with his students and show them the many faces of the ocean. John was born and raised in Oceanside and became a permanent fixture in the surf lineup. Like so many before him, he started surfing with friends and family and enjoyed the Owner, aquatics camp at the Pier that the city Dre offers. Dee It was fairly evident that John had the desire and THEOSIDER.COM
passion to take his surfing to the next level. He started competing locally and working for Surf Ride surf shop. Through the summers, he started working with their surf camp and also judging amateur contests. He found that he could make a living at the surf camps and surf shop, while pursuing a professional surf career. John soon became a role model in the water and found that the next generation was picking his brain for advice, and beginners were hounding him for lessons. Soon, John realized that starting his own business coaching and giving private lessons was an ideal career for him—it’s something he loves. John has taught hundreds of people how to get up for the first time and surf. He’s also tapped into the youth and is now coaching 24
some of our best up-and-coming surfers to take their surfing to the next level. He often takes his advanced surfers up to San Clemente to surf Trestles or down to Blacks Beach to push their abilities and test themselves on world-class waves. His hands-on approach and keen eye for detail has his students seeing great improvements in competition and have helped them fulfill their dreams. With over fifteen years of teaching under his belt and countless hours in the water, John Daniels is well qualified and will have you and your family ripping in no time!

ARTS
JOHN GIVEZ WORDS: ALONDRA FIGUEROA PHOTOS: ZACH CORDNER
Hip Hop, Rap, and R & B—John Givez’ music is a refreshingly unique mix of all three. Born and raised in Oceanside as “John Givens” (now known artistically as “John Givez”), this is an Osider whose roots run deep throughout our community. When he’s not on tour, he still calls Oceanside his home. I’ve had the pleasure of knowing this young gentleman for many years, both personally and professionally. I’ve witnessed his many talents, tremendous personal growth, some ups and downs, as well as his progression from acting and theatre arts into a phenomenal hip hop artist. I was able to sit down with John to chat over some Anita’s chips and salsa. Here’s a glimpse of our conversation about what inspires his art. While I’ve known you for a long time—tell the rest of Oceanside a little bit about what makes you an Osider. Well, I was born and raised in the valley. Born at Tri-City in 1992—do you know where Chavez is? Yeah, I lived in that neighborhood off of Shadow Way. I went to Del Rio Elementary, then Libby, King, and then El Camino High School. So at Del Rio, I met the Seau family, the Thomas family, and then when I went to Libby—I met other young black dudes. From there, I went to King middle school where I began some of the friendships I still have today. While at El Camino High School, you delved into acting and were actually good—so good that I encouraged you to go the acting route. Yeah, you did and that’s still something I want to do. I think doing that kind of saved a little bit of the innocence I still had just because it was showing me subconsciously that there was more out there to do that was positive. And the homies would laugh at me, too—they would laugh! I remember the newspaper came out with me as the Tin Man (from The Wiz) and friends were getting it at their house like, “Is this you, fool?” How does your experience with acting influence your music now? One thing’s for sure—confidence. Basically, being on stage in front of people. I’d never really sung in front of people before that. Only at church and those were people I had known since I was a kid. It exposed me to performing for an audience.

The older I got, the more I was hanging out in the alley eating Burger King by On your first album, 4 Seasons, you reference Balderrama Park, and out there—you kind of get some pretty deep things, such as your into it. father’s mental health, growing up a bit rough in Oceanside, and your church upbringing. That’s what makes music so amazing. How has music allowed you to work through Can you tell us a little bit more? Yeah, well my pops was sick basically from 2001 these things? through 2009. He became ill due to a chemical It’s like medicine. It allows me to express myself, imbalance in his brain from his experiences in completely. It’s all about me, and everything the military. While he was going through that, I going on around me. was going through a transitional time in my life, too, where I needed a male figure. He was down What’s happening next for you? and out, so I turned to older friends and started Well, I’m finalizing this deal with Interscope Records—they reached out when I finished my getting cliqued up. cool because they let the artists be themselves. The group of people they have working with me have been really great and are allowing me to do what I want. That’s all I want to do: Sing about life, faith, trouble with females—everything. I want my music to be more than just music for the few hours you’re in the club. I want to make music that is made for all 24 hours of your day. Do you see yourself staying in Oceanside? I plan on always having a home in Oceanside. I love it because it’s not LA, and it’s not like San Diego. It’s its own place, and I don’t really feel comfortable saying I’m from San Diego—I’m from Oceanside.

10 THINGS
YOU DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT
OCEANSIDE’S SURF HISTORY
WORDS: KRISTI HAWTHORNE PHOTOS COURTESY OF THE CALIFORNIA SURF MUSEUM/OCEANSIDE HISTORICAL SOCIETY
Nothing quite embodies the SoCal lifestyle like the sport of surfing. The history of surfing in Oceanside has changed over the decades since its early beginnings when local lifeguards improvised riding the waves on their rescue boards. Surfing was viewed as somewhat of a novelty as beach entertainment, but it was undeniably here to stay as generations took to the sport and made it a lifestyle. Oceanside embraces its rich surfing legacy and is proud to be the home of the acclaimed California Surf Museum.
DIDN'T 10 THINGS YOU KNOW ABOUT
OCEANSIDE’S SURF HISTORY
1.
The first shop to sell surfboards in Oceanside was Joe and Ted’s Tackle Shop on Third Street (now Pier View Way). They began selling balsa wood surfboards for fifteen dollars as early as 1948.
2.
Some of the first surfers in Oceanside were our beach lifeguards. Byron Jessup remembers that as a lifeguard in 1945, he began using his rescue board to ride the waves in back to shore. At the time, these boards weighed around 100 pounds and without a skeg (or fin) they were difficult to maneuver.
3.
In the early years, there were likely less than a dozen surfers, and that included Jessup, George Miller, Doug Tico, Victor Magee, and Cramer Jackson, among others. They rode waves on boards made of balsa or redwood nearly nineto-ten feet long. One of the most popular spots was just south of the Oceanside Pier.
4.
One early Oceanside surfer was Phil Edwards, who, at a young age, began surfing alongside the Oceanside lifeguards. Edwards would go on to be featured in the 1961 iconic surf film Surfing Hollow Days along with twelve-year old Peter Johnson of Oceanside. Edwards went on to become the world’s foremost surfer of his day.
5.
In the 1950s, surfing grew in popularity. In 1955, a surfboard race was added to the annual Labor Day Pier Swim. The Oceanside Surfing Club was formed, and in December of 1958, the club of 40 members “performed” in a surfing demonstration to help advertise Oceanside’s “balmy winter weather.” The Oceanside Longboarder Surfing Club has its roots from this original Surf Club. The Pier, 1984.
Phil Edwards at Oceanside Pier circa 1960s.

6.
Surfing was all but banned in Oceanside in 1959. Due to the weight of the boards, injuries were common to beach goers and many considered them dangerous. The city council stepped in and established ordinance attempting to designate areas and even times for surfing. Soon surfing was restricted to Wisconsin Avenue (south end of the Strand) and was prohibited between 10:00am and 6:00pm. The ordinance was amended in 1961, but continued in part through the 1960s.
7.
In 1964, the first annual U.S. Invitational Surfing Meet was held in Oceanside. Seventyfive surfers competed, including Oceanside local “Little John” Richards. The meet featured both men and women, along with tandem surfing.
David Lind of Linden Surfboards, 1989.
8.
Some of the world’s best shapers have been in Oceanside, including legendary Donald Takayama and Gary Linden. Currently, there are dozens of world-class shapers and board manufacturers in Oceanside.
9.
Oceanside High School started a Surfing Club in 1971 with a team of twelve members. Art Lupino was the instructor and he boasted that member John Boyden was one “among the top ten surfers on the coast.”

Today, Oceanside continues to embrace its surf history and is home to several surf competitions like the Western Surfing Association Championship Tour Event, the Surfing America USA Championship, Supergirl Pro Surf Contest, the Oceanside Longboard Surfing Club Contest, the annual Guy Takayama Pro Noseriding Contest, and the Surf For The Sea Memorial Contest.

On a sunny afternoon in June, actor Scott Speedman washes his car with the iconic Oceanside Municipal Pier in the background while shooting a scene for TNT’s new crime drama series, Animal Kingdom. The rented beach cottage on The Strand used for filming serves as the house for Scott’s character, Baz. Animal Kingdom showcases the best of Oceanside and makes the city look fantastic on the big screen. Developed by Jonathan Lisco and based on a 2010 Australian movie by David Michôd, the story follows the Cody family’s estranged seventeen year-old nephew, Joshua “J” Cody (Finn Cole) who moves in with his grandmother after his mother’s death. J quickly learns about his family’s nefarious trade run by his grandmother and her “boys.” Animal Kingdom hosts an elite cast, including Emmy and Tony winner Ellen Barkin as the ruthless matriarch, Janine “Smurf” Cody. TNT’s new drama, Animal Kingdom, didn’t wander far from Hollywood to find an authentic Southern California beach town setting when they chose Oceanside for its authenticity— qualities the producers sought for the new crime drama series. Executive Producers Johnathan Lisco and John Wells scouted beach towns throughout Southern California and chose Oceanside because it contains elements of the past and the present without too much gentrification. Producer Llewellyn Wells said that Oceanside was primarily chosen because “Oceanside is authentic.” When the announcement for a casting call went out in April for “real Oceanside,” the producers were pleasantly surprised when approximately 1,000 people showed up. Producers hired background actors that are a

diversified representation of the beach culture portrayed in the show. The “extras” appreciate a gig where they are paid to walk The Strand in a bathing suit while brushing up against Hollywood fame. Animal Kingdom’s cast and crew have been well received in Oceanside because the show boosts Oceanside tourism and benefits local businesses. According to Visit Oceanside, the city and local business expect to generate around $500,000 from the initial filming. Animal Kingdom promotes tourism by exposing viewers to the picture-perfect Oceanside backdrops, and then they are compelled to visit.
Owner of Real Surf Shop, Shawn Ambrose, loves the increased attention to his business. Animal Kingdom producers rent out his shop for filming. Even though his surf shop is closed for regular business during that time, Shawn reported that he still benefits because at least half the cast and crew purchased items while filming. Since his business will be televised, Shawn anticipates added traffic from the national promotion. Ambrose added, “The crew did their homework, and even the surfboards used are local.” Business owners involved in filming report a very positive experience. 41
On Wednesday, June 14, 2016, Privateer Marketplace hosted the two-hour premiere of Animal Kingdom. Producer Llewellyn Wells attended the premiere and congratulated the residents in attendance, “Oceanside looks fantastic! Thank you, Oceanside.” While watching the premiere, attendees reveled in seeing their favorite Oceanside locations and cheered for their hometown. The production crew is scouting for local hotspots that match the script, so residents can expect to see many more favorite local landmarks while the show runs. Animal Kingdom airs on TNT Tuesday nights at 9pm. THEOSIDER.COM

It seems as if any thing goes, and the chefs in Oceanside have created some true masterpieces. Whether you’re a fan of a traditional burger done right, or the type that likes to live on the wild side—our local restaurants have just what you’re looking for. KOCT TV COMMUNITY TELEVISION WORDS: PROMISE YEE PHOTO: CHRISTOPHER DONEZ
If you’ve hung out in Oceanside long enough, you’ve likely appeared on its community television station, KOCT TV. The station covers local elections, issues, sports, arts, and culture. It also trains and nurtures those interested in a career in the industry. KOCT has provided Oceanside public, educational, and government access since 1984. The community television station began operations out of a mobile studio and the home garage of its founder, Bob Bowditch. His catalyst for beginning the station was to televise City Council meetings and make them more transparent and accessible to residents. Station operations grew along with the city. KOCT began covering city parades, high school sports, and annual events. The station also added community programing, an events calendar, and public service announcements. When the new city hall was built in 1990, a fiber optic communication system, permanent cameras, and a master control console were built into the facility. KOCT currently produces monthly shows that include Journalist Roundtable, Oceanside Spectrum, and Voice of Oceanside. The station has also expanded its production to include paid services, and local stories of interest throughout North County. KOCT continues to live by its motto of being “your community channel” as it serves a larger audience. “It really is fair and equal—it covers the gamut of education, politics, and issues that effect everyday people. It’s hyper local,” said Jacob Rush, station manager. The industry technology has grown by leaps and bounds since the station began. Rush said when he began working for the station in 2002; television was a specialized field with a

smaller pool of qualified employees. Early technology consisted of tapes and computers that operated in isolation. Rush explained that there’s now a bounty of qualified and interested young talent to handle streamlined technology that has advanced to networked storage and retrieval systems, accessible integrated software, and highdefinition video. “The time it took to previously log and capture tape is gone. Now I can send someone a Hightail link to a digital file,” said Rush. Over the years, KOCT has won numerous STAR, WAVE, and Hometown Media Awards for its programs. Most recently the station received a Telly award for its program A Really Big Rancho— The Story of the Kelly Family, which is part of the series Adobes and Ranchos of North County. KOCT operates a government and community channel that can be viewed respectively on Oceanside Cox channels 19 and 18, and AT&T U-verse channel 99 countywide. Programs also stream live and on demand at koct.org, which sees 12,000 unique visitors a month. The station is funded by television franchise fees, grants, fundraising, underwriting, sponsorships, and paid production work. It also receives state funds to regularly update its equipment. KOCT employs four full-time employees, and works with a strong crew of part-time employees, interns, and volunteers. Rush said the station offers newcomers to the industry an incredible opportunity to hone their talent. He added a significant number of local television newscasters and industry experts got their start at KOCT. The amazing crew at KOCT TV. Always shining a light on our city!

OHANA CUPCAKES WORDS: ALICIA STONE PHOTOS: ZACH CORDNER If you’re a parent who’s visited the playgrounds, planned the parties, paid the admissions, and just about done everything to bring friends and family together to celebrate a birthday (or just a plain old Saturday out of the house)—then you’re in for a real treat. Ohana Cupcakes is a creation of the McKenna family, and its goal is to provide a venue for people to connect and make lasting memories. Susan and Mark McKenna had been trying to create something unique in the wake of the success of companies like Build-A-Bear and a few others. They understood the need for a “hands-on” experience, not realizing that their past restaurant training coupled with their daughter’s Easter gift would bring their dream to fruition. “When my daughter received her cupcake maker and we saw her joy while sharing her creations with her brothers, we knew we were onto something,” Susan said. After living for a year on the Big Island of Hawaii and borrowing the message of the Disney movie Lilo & Stitch, they decided on the concept and theme of Hawaiian Ohana, which means "family, blood-related or adopted, bound together, and never-to-be-forgotten." After noticing that most home baking sets wereOwners, pink and for girls, Ohana chose to Kellymade and Travis Esquibel make their space colorful and available for children of all ages. There’s also the bonus of THEOSIDER.COM
leaving the mess in their kitchen. There’s no need to store the ingredients at home or buy the equipment. Ohana is fine with you leaving all of that to them. The many various options include pre-made cupcakes; “Megan’s Corner,” buildyour-own; “Ohana Express” and “Create, Take & Bake,” where YOU become the baker and experience the whole creative process. That experience comes complete with a gift bag containing a baker’s hat, Hawaiian lei, commemorative photo, and a few other goodies. In Ohana’s party room you can host gatherings where they provide the food and drinks. Specially ordered cupcakes are also available for pick up and they do have vegan and glutenfree versions as well! Susan, a California native who spent summers on our local beaches, and her husband Mark—a trained chef and caterer—decided on Oceanside as their location because “we liked 52
the pulse of Oceanside. It’s up-and-coming feel and the proximity to military families. Giving back to the community is a huge part of Ohana.” They host fundraisers for military family organizations and work closely with the Boys and Girls Club. They make their experience available to the local farmer’s markets and are looking forward to adding more locations. Cupcakes can be made in seven minutes, so your visit can last twenty minutes or you can fill an entire afternoon. So whether you’re looking for a complete baking experience, or a quick respite from cell phones and video games—Ohana Cupcakes will be ready and waiting.

MADSTRANGE
From left to right: Jeremy Martinez, Andres Jimenez, Tonyo Cuffee, Daniel Jimenez, Jrolz, and Dezzy Hollow.
WORDS: AARON SCHMIDT PHOTOS: ZACH CORDNER Originally opening it’s doors in 2015, MadStrange was started by two brothers with a vision. After growing up in Oceanside, brothers Andres and Daniel Jimenez developed a creative epicenter in Oceanside that encompasses music, film, and apparel—all with a “do-it-yourself” ethic of working hard and representing your hometown in the best way possible. Welcome inside the minds of the local innovators at MadStrange. What’s the history of MadStrange? [Daniel] We opened the store in July of last year. Before that, my younger brother Andres began selling Oceanside MadStrange T-shirts and snapbacks to his high school friends at Oceanside High in 2012. He was selling a lot, and at that time, I was still in school. I was going to school at UCLA for film and Chicano studies. I was studying filmmaking and that’s pretty much part of our company still—we do all the music videos, short documentaries, and we’re also working on a feature film. We are also a custom print shop and independent record label. We do everything ourselves from creating beats to shooting our own videos. What’s the meaning behind the name? Who came up with it? My brother and I came up with the name. Pretty much what it means is just be yourself even if it’s mad strange, weird, or if it’s different—just be yourself. Why open up in Oceanside? We’re all from Oceanside, and our history in business goes way back. My mom used to have a shop in the Mission Bazaar called Soccer THEOSIDER.COM
Mexico. It was a soccer store she started in 2000 until that place closed down. She was there for at least fourteen years. Do you guys make all the product, too? Yeah, we have a stitching machine, heat press, and a direct-to-garment printing machine. We can do any kind of design onto a t-shirt. Do you guys offer that to the public? We do small orders. People come here a lot to do custom orders like “Rest In Peace” shirts, baptisms, one-year birthday shirts, and stuff like that. What’s MadStrange's connection to music? We have a music label that we started basically the beginning of this year. We have two artists, Dezzy Hollow and Tonyo Cuffee. Both of them are from Oceanside. We’ve been working with music for probably like two years now, creating music videos and running our record label. Do you guys have any plans on working with the local community here? We do a lot of work with our community. Most of it comes through art, and what I mean by art is music and film. A lot of our music videos showcase the art community in different areas of our city that usually don’t get highlighted, like Crown Heights, the East Side, Deep Valley, Tri City, Mid Valley, and South O. We are community involved through mentoring youth with letting them come to our video shoots, working with them, and letting them 54
experience filmmaking and creating music. How can people see your videos? Go on YouTube and search “MadStrange” and “Dezzy Hollow”—all of our videos are up. We have a website, too, it’s MadStange.com. Also check out our Instagram: @MadStrange and @DezzyHollow. What do you love about Oceanside? The people, the different cultures, and the diversity—that’s probably the best part of it. What’s your future plans for MadStrange? Within the next five years, we definitely want to take the music to the next level. I think it’s happening now, we’re getting listeners from all over the world and getting comments everyday from people from other places.

PETITE MADELINE BAKERY & BISTRO PHOTOS: ZACH CORDNER With so many amazing restaurants Oceanside has on offer, we thought it was very fitting to include some “Local Flavor” into the mix of The Osider. Every issue, we’ll be sharing a special menu item recipe from some of our favorite local restaurants and chefs that you can prepare at home. This time we feature Petite Madeline Bakery & Bistro's very own, Chef Marc Santos. Bon Appetit!
HOW TO MAKE CRUSTLESS QUICHE INGREDIENTS ½ cup already-sautéed vegetables 4 whole eggs ½ cup heavy cream (we use the heaviest cream at 40-percent butterfat) ½ cup whole milk ¼ cup shredded Gruyere cheese ¼ cup shredded Parmesan cheese A PINCH OF THE FOLLOWING SPICES: Garlic powder Italian seasoning Black pepper, ground Nutmeg (optional, but it adds a certain “je ne sais quoi”) (The salt will come from the cheese. No added salt needed.) 1.
Preheat oven to 350-degrees. Butter four eightounce ramekins (or a nine-inch deep-dish pie pan) and set aside.
2.
In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, heavy cream and whole milk, and spices. Stir in sautéed veggies and cheeses.
3.
Place ramekins or pie pan on a rimmed baking sheet. Ladle veggie-and-egg mixture into ramekins or pie pan. Bake until slightly golden brown, but still slightly jiggly in the middle, about 35 to 40 minutes.
4.
Serve with crusty bread and a mixed-green salad, if desired.
The beauty of this recipe is its versatility. Use whatever veggies are in your fridge or any seasonal veggies. At the bakery, we use a combination of mushrooms, zucchini, red onions, and tomato for our daily quiche. When Cyclops Farms has a boatload of organic veggies, we make a crustless quiche special! There couldn’t be a better reason why owner Perry “P-Dawg” Roumbos decided to open his 80s themed restaurant in Oceanside—he simply fell in love with our beach town during that defining decade. Raised in the LA area, Perry became disillusioned with the surfing vibe of the beaches closest to him. He and his friends headed south, found our Harbor surfing community welcoming, and soon began spending most weekends enjoying the good waves and friendly people there. The son of Greek immigrants who owned and operated two Golden Ox restaurants, Perry worked in his family’s business. By age twelve, he was washing dishes and learning the business— taking to heart his father Bill’s motto: “You gotta treat your customers better than family.” After obtaining a degree in architecture, Perry decided he’d return to his family’s passion, and in 2002, he opened a 50s style Pancake House on Route 66 in Glendora. “Something was missing. That’s when it hit me. I loved coming to Oceanside in the 80s and wanted to give my customers a taste of what life was like in an ocean-side town in that era,” said Perry. First operating the Breakfast Club Diner inside The Flying Bridge restaurant for eight months, Perry then jumped at the opportunity to move into a premium corner location in the heart of downtown in 2011. At first glance, you can’t help but take in the 80s memorabilia and all of the feelings that come flooding back to anyone who remembers that time, the music, and those timeless 80s movies. The menu is filled with iconic figures, fun facts, and trivia! The Breakfast Club Diner offers everything that one would pair with eggs. ready to hit the beach. Perry has even included a Greek spin on the breakfast burrito by adding gyro meat, feta cheese, and spinach! They have eleven different omelet choices, as well as breakfast skillets. Pancakes, French toast, and waffle choices round out the breakfast options. For lunch, sandwiches selections include Veggie, Philly Steak, French Dip, and TeriyakiPineapple Chicken. The burgers range from “classic” to “A-Nutter Better Burger” with peanut butter. And the Benedict Burger with an egg tastes absolutely as good as it sounds! They also offer great salads and sides, as well as beer and Kombucha on tap. Perry said, “I couldn’t have done this without the help of my wife, who often puts in a sevenday work week. We love the support of the community and military families. At the end of the day, we are having a lot of fun here and we hope you are, too!” 58

WU LAN RAMEN TAP HOUSE WORDS: BRYN HERRLEIN PHOTOS: ZACH CORDNER Jen Sun, owner of Wu Lan Ramen Tap House, hopes to be an inspiration to women like herself who have come to the U.S.A. searching for the American dream. At age nineteen, Sun and her husband immigrated to the United States where she enrolled in school to learn English. She earned a living by working in a Chinese restaurant. Six years later, they owned their own Chinese restaurant, then a Mexican restaurant, and even an American Diner. After nine years of juggling three restaurants, it was time for a change; they sold two of the restaurants and divorced. Once on her own with complete creative control, she chose to open a restaurant serving the cuisine she knew and loved—Ramen. Fast forward to 2016, and the Wu Lan Ramen Tap House was born. Raised in Taiwan, Sun has many happy memories cooking alongside her father who served as a Navy cook. Together, they shopped at local open markets, where her father would teach her how to choose the freshest and best quality ingredients. He also taught her the importance of the complicated techniques used to make Taiwanese cuisine. THEOSIDER.COM
Taiwanese cuisine is heavily influenced by Japanese and Chinese traditions. Ramen, like Taiwanese cuisine, is both Chinese and Japanese; the “noodle” (originally called Shin Soba) is from China, and the “broth” is from Japan. The first specialized Ramen restaurant was opened in Yokohama, Japan in 1910, and since has been popularized around the world as Japanese cuisine. Dining at the Wu Lan Ramen Tap house is like being magically transported to Sun’s family home in Taiwan. Making the same recipes her father taught her, she focuses on three broths: a fifteen-hour rich cloudy pork broth, a hearty miso broth, and a light chicken broth. My favorite ramen dish is the Black Knight— the pork broth topped with black sesame oil. Sun’s favorite is the Miso Hot. Yes, the Ramen is amazing, but don’t stop there—all of the appetizers are unique and delicious. Try the Takoyaki, or the Firecracker Shrimp for a special treat. A real bonus is that not one of the menu items cost more than twelve dollars. Sun’s novel approach to running a restaurant relies on the fact that if you treat your 60

Wu Lan Ramen Tap House 4645 Frazee Road (760) 453-7526 staff well, they will in turn treat the customers well. She encourages a healthy lifestyle for all of her employees by providing Jazzercise and Pilates classes, occasionally even teaching the Jazzercise class herself. She has plans to include meditation to her wellness regimen for her staff and friends. The Wu Lan Ramen Tap House is so popular that she’s already contemplating opening up a second location. The future looks bright for Jen Sun!

I LOVE BAGELS WORDS: ALYSON KLIER PHOTOS: CHRISTOPHER DONEZ
For Alan and Linda Amster, owners of I Love Bagels in Oceanside, the bagel business is truly a family affair! Alan’s father started working at a bagel bakery in Newark, New Jersey when he was only fourteen years old and he went on to become a young bagel business owner himself soon after. In time, his children were recruited to work in the business and many went on to open their own bagel shops—including Alan. He and his wife Linda opened their first bagel business in New Jersey, but eventually moved to Southern California. Like several of his brothers who currently own and run their own bagel businesses in Encinitas, Laguna Nigel, Dana Point, and Mission Viejo, Alan and Linda also owned a bagel business in Vista in the late 90s, but moved to their current main location on Vista Way next to Home Depot in September of 2010. Their second Oceanside location (on Oceanside Boulevard) opened last year in May. I Love Bagels is a bustling bagel bakery and deli open seven days a week from 5:30am to 5:30pm on weekdays, and 6am to 2pm on weekends. Alan and Linda stay very busy running both locations, taking care of the day-to-day operations and making sure their customers are THEOSIDER.COM
happy. You can see their shop is really more of a passion than just a business for them. The atmosphere in the deli is very relaxed and friendly. Customers are greeted by fun pictures of Alan and Linda’s family bagel history. You’ll often see them both behind the counter (and in front of it), Alan addressing regulars by name and chatting them up. I Love Bagels offer a gambit of bagel varieties, from the plain to the chocolate chip, but that is just the beginning. They’re well known for their delicious breakfast bagel sandwiches, which are served all day and they have a huge selection of both hot and cold deli sandwiches. They’ve got all the drinks, sides, and chips you could want to go with your sandwich, including a delicious selection of homemade spreads to go. Perhaps in the future they’ll expand yet again—Alan would love to grow both locations and maybe even open a third shop in Oceanside. But for the time being, Alan and Linda will be hard at work keeping both of their Oceanside locations running smoothly. Don’t wait to stop in soon for a satisfying breakfast, lunch, or to pick up a dozen bagels and a homemade spread!

PAUL RUEZ/OHS ZACH CORDNER
On Saturday June 4th, Oceanside was rocked as we lost one of our greats. "It only happens to the special ones." Although so cliché, its eminently true. Then when we recoup, we see just how blessed we are to be touched by these unique souls—gratitude is somehow the way we get through the loss. I speak about the beloved Pulu Poumele. Husband, father, teacher, coach, friend, mentor, and role model, Pulu was a bright light in Oceanside who lit up any room anywhere in the world that he walked into. He leaves us with a legacy, and led by example through his love, passion, integrity, respect, laughter, and, of course, that beautiful contagious big smile. A giving man, he was never too busy to help anyone and had the rare gift of making you feel special. Pulu’s impact was felt on the field, in classrooms, in locker rooms, at church, and even at the local grocery store. The kids saw his truths just as we all did, through his passion and his love.
He loved Oceanside and returned to give back to the youth, just as he was guided and helped in his early life. Football and academics were the vehicles that granted him passage as a Pirate to the Wildcats to the NFL—the Browns, Ravens, and Chargers—and even to the CFL, followed by a homecoming to North County San Diego to coach and teach at San Marcos, El Camino, and Oceanside High School. Calvary Chapel in Oceanside was filled over capacity with hundreds outside on their feet. It’s only the extraordinary ones who overflow a 2,000 capacity celebration and leave hundreds outside standing. Over 3000 people from all over the states came, cheered, and paid their respects because Pulu influenced and touched their lives. Pulu had a love for sports and basketball, especially. It’s bittersweet and ironic that he’d leave this world after playing, but I know his spirit will live on with all of us—forever. 69
Continued prayers are with Jessica and their five children, and the entire Poumele Family. “He had incredible impact as a teacher, coach, and mentor with the entire youth community of Oceanside." —John Carroll, Former Head Coach of Oceanside High School “I’m just heartbroken with Pulu’s passing, but I know he leaves a strong legacy that will live on in San Diego forever … just a marvelous human being.” —Dick Tomey, Former Head Coach of the University of Arizona Wildcats “He’d give you anything to help. He put you in a good mood and always made you feel like you were the most important person in the room. He was my best friend.” —Sale Isaia, Jr., Former NFL player THEOSIDER.COM
