Oceanside ANOTHER SATISFIED CUSTOMER SPEAKS: I enjoyed working with Oceanside Abbey Carpet and Floors on my latest home construction project. Oceanside Abbey Carpet is a very professional company and as a builder of custom homes that is what I look for and what I'm use to. The custom window shutters I ordered not only came in under budget but the measurements and installation was perfectly executed. I would recommend Oceanside Abbey Carpet and Floors to anyone and everyone. Ted Viola Carlsbad

SET IN STONE A WORD FROM THE PUBLISHER

What an amazing year 2016 has been for Oceanside. New businesses continue to prosper and grow, people are coming here in droves to enjoy the fruits that our labor has cultivated, and property value is on the rise. It seems to me that every neighborhood is taking more and more pride in community events, the preservation of our parks, and our home fronts. It’s pretty safe to say that Oceanside is the last true beach town in Southern California that continues to grow. Mind you, this is all happening during what most consider the craziest presidential election year ever to take place here in America. Not too shabby for a city that was often looked down upon by the rest of Southern California. Well, not any more. This is really just the beginning for the new-and-improved Oceanside.

So while all the politicians do whatever it takes to get the win, we’ll all continue to win together because that’s what we’ve always done here in Oceanside. The city may be going through a lot of change, but it’s the respect and pride of our residents that makes Oceanside the best city on the planet. Enjoy the holiday season with friends and family. Eat, drink, be merry, and most of all be thankful for where we live. I know I am. Truly blessed,

Jamey Stone

DR. KATHY TOOSIE KINDER, GENTLER RADIATION THERAPY FOR EARLY-STAGE BREAST CANCER PATIENTS PRESENTED BY TRI-CITY MEDICAL CENTER

If you were to call Dr. Kathy Toosie “contagious,” you’d have to be talking about her incredible contagious passion for an innovative new form of breast cancer care. As a long-time and local board-certified general surgeon with a special expertise in breast and laparoscopic surgeries, Dr. Toosie jumped at the chance to reduce the side effects and stress for North County’s earlystage breast cancer patients. In August, she and her radiation oncology colleagues at Tri-City Medical Center started evaluating Stage 1 and 2 breast cancer patients for what is called intra-operative radiation therapy (or IORT). With IORT, Dr. Toosie and her Tri-City team deliver a full, concentrated dose of radiation at the time of the patient’s lumpectomy, targeting cancer cells and sparing healthy tissue, such as the skin, heart, lungs, and ribs. “While the surgical cavity is still open, I temporarily insert a miniaturized X-ray source in a flexible balloon-shaped applicator. It’s only in THEOSIDER.COM

“I’m thrilled to bring IORT to our patients who are good candidates.” the lumpectomy cavity for about an hour,” explained Dr. Toosie. “Because the radiation dose is so localized, it can be very small and just as effective as far heavier external radiation doses. And, best of all—it doesn’t have the side-effects.” “I’m thrilled to bring IORT to our patients who are good candidates,” added Dr. Toosie. “It also requires only a fraction of the treatment time. The traditional treatment regimen—five days per week for three-to-six weeks—is so tough on women, their careers, and their families. Offering my patients, who are good candidates, a oneday, single dose treatment option is one of the most gratifying points in my career to date.” 18

ADVANCED HEALTH CARE...FOR

HIDDEN GEMS

From tamales, tortas, and burritos—Z-Market is your quick "go-to" spot for fast and fresh Mexican food.

Z-MARKET WORDS: ALYSON KLIER PHOTOS: CHRISTOPHER DONEZ

Oceanside is a city with a great amount of diversity, and that means there’s a great variety of small businesses that provide us with truly unique products and places to eat. Many hidden gems can be found within our city borders. Some are tucked in throughout our colorful neighborhoods, but there’s also some that you might drive by everyday without even knowing it. Located on the bustling corner of Mission Avenue and Airport Road, Z-Market is definitely not a “hidden” Oceanside business, but it is most certainly a “gem” and a hub of community activity in the valley. The market itself is a “onestop” spot for basically any household necessity you may be looking for; like groceries, cleaning products, or electronic accessories—you name it, Z-Market has it. And, of course, it has a full selection of beers, wines, spirits, and snacks. But what truly makes Z-Market a hidden gem, and hot spot at lunch time, is their delicious food and the hard-working owners who truly care about their customers and their community. Owners Jimmy and Grace Faco have been running their Z-Market in Oceanside since 1991. The original location was across the street and started with a very small kitchen, which Grace used to make sandwiches and other “to go” food items. As the business grew, so did the kitchen, and sixteen years later, Jimmy and Grace purchased the land across THEOSIDER.COM

the street to build a bigger store with an even better kitchen. The market has a friendly atmosphere and Jimmy and Grace are always on hand greeting customers by name as they walk in. You might not think of getting a quality meal at a convenience store, but the Z-Market menu has a great variety of meal choices made with fresh ingredients that keep the regulars coming back for more. The tamales have a near cult-like following, so plan on arriving before the lunchtime rush to make sure you get yours! You can take your food to go or eat in the cafe set up inside the market, and if you’re in a hurry, you can even call in an order to pick up. As business owners, Jimmy and Grace appreciate the good-natured people who call Oceanside home and feel it’s important to give back to the community as much as possible. Z-Market donates food and supplies to the Boys & Girls Club for fundraising events, and they organize a food donation to families in need in Mexico at least once a year, driving the two tons or more of goods that they collect across the border themselves with their children. Giving back to those who are less fortunate is extremely important to Jimmy and Grace. Spend a few moments chatting with them and you’ll quickly see what truly kind-hearted individuals they are. Lucky for us, they chose to open the Z-Market in Oceanside 25 years ago and don’t have plans to move anytime soon! 20

STROLLER WARRIORS CAMP PENDLETON WORDS: ALICIA STONE PHOTOS: CHARLIE NEUMAN

On a recent sunny morning at Buccaneer Park (as the locals stopped by for their morning coffee or wave check), other cars pulled into the lot and their drivers began unloading strollers, kids, snacks, and running gear—all while adorning their bright colored shirts bearing their club’s name, the “Stroller Warriors®.” They congregated near the picnic tables and as one of the coordinators announced upcoming events, the children and their moms greeted each other with warm smiles and welcoming hugs. This gathering is only a small sample of the 37 chapters led by active-duty military spouses that meet worldwide and are based out of US military installations. Stephanie Geraghty originally founded Stroller Warriors® in 2010 out of Camp Lejeune in North Carolina with the mission to help military families live happier, healthier lives through fitness, friendship, networking, fundraising, and community outreach. What began as a free running club designed to connect with other active “stay at home moms,” soon evolved into a global organization that not only focuses on running, but also offers book clubs, ladies nights, brunches, yoga, paddle boarding, prayer meetings, and support for members with a deployed or injured spouse. Our local club (based out of Camp Pendleton) was the fourth chapter to open and is currently coordinated by Sarah Viczorek, Sharon Grummer, and Joy Granter. With a typical attendance of tento-twenty members on any particular morning, Owner, they actually have about 80 members who cycle Dre Dee in and out and juggle their busy schedules to THEOSIDER.COM

attend one of their many available activities. For their morning runs, they meet at a number of different locations from Oceanside to San Clemente. They start out with a 40-minute workout, followed by some time for the children to play and the moms to catch up with each other. Though they’re first and foremost a running club, they take pride in welcoming all levels of fitness and children and strollers are not a requirement. “The goal is to create a community of military spouses where individuals can meet new people with similar challenges, have a safe space to talk and receive support when needed. Although we have twice weekly runs, we’ve also become a bit of a social club with our comedy and craft nights. We also plan safe events for our kids, such as fire station tours, strawberry picking, and our upcoming Trunk or Treat. We’re always looking for ways to give back to the community, whether it be fundraising, food drives or beach clean ups,” said Sarah. Since active-duty military families are often moving and may find themselves in new towns where they may not know anyone, Sarah recommends checking their group’s Facebook page. There they keep an updated calendar with current runs and activities, as well as maintaining an active feed where people can chat about any topic, get advice, find running buddies, schedule play-dates, and be aware of community events. With Camp Pendleton our close neighbor, Oceanside is proud to host our military families. Most of our small business owners do their best for our soldiers, so it’s only natural that we 26

extend that hospitality to their families. So if you happen to see our local chapter of Stroller Warriors ® on a run or in one of our parks, give them a wave, and remember: These are the true heroes—living in support of their spouses, and our country’s future everyday.

STAR THEATRE 60 YEARS ILLUMINATING OCEANSIDE

JEEKY PRODUCTIONS PHOTOGRAPHY (2)

“First opened as a movie theater, the original ticket booth outside reminds old-timers of first dates and classic movies.”

The Children of Eden production in September/October of 2016.

Since 1956, the Star Theatre has been illuminating downtown Oceanside with its neon star marquee as a memorable beacon to motorists driving along the coast. First opened as a movie theater, the original ticket booth outside reminds oldtimers of first dates and classic movies. In its 60 years, the Star Theatre has seen its glory and its decay, but today, in 2016, the building and its theatrical line-up are thriving and anticipating the best years to come. Built in an era when neon signs on buildings were a necessity for every city, architect William Glenn Balch designed a theater that utilized space for maximum efficiency—the seats are over the lobby. Balch designed seventeen theaters total, but Star Theatre was the largest in his portfolio, and the last one that remains open. Since being purchased in 2000 as a live theater venue, 520 seats were removed to make way for a state-of-the-art stage with 466 seats remaining. With its current tenants, the historical building has gradually been returning to its original glory with enhancement projects. The biggest and most notable project occurred two years ago when the neon sign, which is the largest neon marquee west of the Mississippi, was fixed for $110,000. Since 2000, Star Theatre is the current residence of Star Theatre Company and Star Theatre Coast Kids (STCK). Under the direction of Producing Artistic Director David Schulz, Star Theatre produces six shows each year that attract talented actors from all walks of life. Of those six shows, two are youth shows. With six

shows per year, Star Theatre Company is always in production. Almost every day of the week is filled with auditions, rehearsals, and choir practice. The building is almost too small to host all the activity, and Schulz is currently seeking a space nearby to expand groups, such as Star Theatre Coast Kids. To celebrate 60 years and raise $60,000, the event $ixty for 60 will be held on Saturday,

November 5th at Cape Rey Hilton in Carlsbad. The public is invited, but if it’s not possible a to attend, a $60 tax-deductible donation is requested as part of the $ixty for 60 campaign. With funds raised, the Star Theatre will continue enhancement projects. “She’s in the best shape, but there’s still work to do, including full transfer to LED lights, which will cost approximately $40,000,” explained Schulz. The raised funds also provide scholarships because Schulz doesn’t want any child turned away from the theatre company. Great shows for all audiences abound this winter season! In November, the Star Theatre Coast Kids presents Shrek the Musical from November 11th-20th. In December, Star Theatre’s annual tradition, Annie, will run December 9th-18th. Annie is Star Theatre’s most popular production. Each year, Schulz handpicks a dynamic line-up for theatre aficionados. Hot off the press, the upcoming 2017 line-up is: February: Star Theatre Co - Neil Simon’s Barefoot In The Park May: STCK - Disney’s The Lion King Jr. July: Star Theatre Co - West Side Story September: Star Theatre Co - The Addams Family November: STCK - Grease December: Star Theatre Co - Annie

OCEANSIDE HIGH SCHOOL

WORDS: KRISTI HAWTHORNE HISTORICAL PHOTOS COURTESY OF THE OCEANSIDE HISTORICAL SOCIETY

Established in 1906, Oceanside High School is celebrating its 110th anniversary. The first principal was Professor W. H. Hensey, who ushered in the first year. Known for its dominance in sports, the school has produced a number of professional athletes. OHS also has an exemplary legacy of producing successful businessmen and women, including two Deputy Mayors of our very own city, two Superior Court Judges, and a Congressman. The current principal is another success story: Teresa Hill-Collis, who graduated from Oceanside High in 1985. From student, to resource specialist, to assistant principal, and now principal—Collis is a great example of accomplishment and achievement.

1.

Oceanside’s first high school was located in the upper floor of the Oceanside School House, which was built in 1888. In 1906, by a vote of 143 to 17, it was determined that the new Oceanside-Carlsbad Union High School should be located in Oceanside. The first graduating class was in 1909, which were all girls: Marguerite Brannen, Ramona Rieke, Sybil Spencer, Edith Cotterel, and Enice Everett. These girls also comprised the school’s basketball team. THEOSIDER.COM

2.

A new high school building was built in 1913, which held classrooms, a study hall, a faculty office, and a home economics room. That year, there were a total of 55 students and 3 teachers. In 1915, the high school enrollment was 55: twelve seniors, thirteen juniors, fifteen sophomores, and fifteen freshmen.

3.

A new science building was added in 1920 and the following year, five-and-a-half acres were purchased for additional classrooms and an auditorium.

4.

In 1927, the high school had 266 students and twelve teachers. Students from as far away as Vista, Encinitas, and Del Mar were bussed to Oceanside’s high school until about 1936 when smaller towns established their own schools.

5.

A junior college was added to the campus in 1934, which would later become MiraCosta College. In 1935, the original wing of the high school was demolished and rebuilt. During the reconstruction, students attended classes in tents.

6.

Escondido was Oceanside’s biggest rival in sports and other athletic meets. For years, bonfires were held on Mission Avenue, east of the high school and Escondido’s mascot, the Cougar, would be burned in effigy.

7.

The City of Carlsbad opened its own high school in 1957, which at the time was a devastating split for many students. The student body was again divided in 1975 when “Oceanside High School East” was established, now known as El Camino High School.

8.

Graduation ceremonies were held on the school grounds and eventually the gymnasium for decades, but since the 1960s graduations have been held at the beach, in what’s now known as the Junior Seau Pier Amphitheatre.

9.

In 2000, the campus was remodeled to include a new Science and Technology Building. The exterior of OHS doubled as “Neptune High” in the television series Veronica Mars.

Hosted by Oceanside Yacht Club, the annual Parade of Lights is a dazzling holidaythemed event that’s free for the whole family to enjoy at Oceanside Harbor. It takes place this year on Saturday, December 10th and beginning at 7:00 p.m., the Harbor sparkles and shimmers with Christmas lights as decorated sea vessels of all shapes and sizes cruise around for the amusement of the audience.

With mesmerizing Christmas lights reflected on the water, some favorite nautical sightings have included: A Christmas Story themed boat; Santa Claus pulling his eight reindeer (that are actually dinghies); and a Christmas ghost ship. There’ll be a few Santa’s waving from boats to make the evening poignant and memorable for children. Participants compete for trophies for the best decorated sea vessel by size. A panel of three-to-five judges comprised of community leaders judges the boats. Winning a nautical-themed trophy is a big deal, but the main reason most boat owners participate is to generate holiday spirit. The Siemer family, Oceanside Harbor slip renters and owners of Reel Crazy, have participated for three years with three generations decorating their dinghy. Jessica (Siemer) Hunter explained why her family participates, “I love that all boats, including kayaks, can participate. We spend the day as a family decorating and being part of the community with festive music and parties on the docks.” The best place to view the Parade of Lights is from anywhere in the harbor! The event grows each year, and on a clear night, about twenty-five THEOSIDER.COM

sea vessels parade around the harbor. With each boat making two laps around the entirety of the marina, there really isn’t a bad seat in the house. It’s a popular event, so make sure to arrive early to get good parking and a good viewpoint. Most parking around the harbor is free after 6:00 p.m.. Make it a night and patron an Oceanside Harbor restaurant and shop the harbor stores. All the restaurants and stores are open for business with many helping make the evening more festive by offering holiday specials. Dominic’s by the Harbor sells hot caramel apple cider and hot

chocolate to passers-by as a fundraiser for Oceanside Breakers. Tore Trupiano of Dominic’s loves Parade of Lights because, “it’s an event that brings the community to the Harbor and grows bigger every year, which is a positive for business.” Dominic’s usually reaches capacity with reservations far in advance. It’s a busy night for the harbor restaurants, so plan accordingly for dinner reservations. This is the first year that the newly opened Rising Sun Sushi will be experiencing the crowds from Parade of Lights. Head Chef   39

at Rising Sun, Tony Tan, is looking forward to showcasing the restaurant to new customers while accommodating regular customers. Touting the title “Friendliest yacht club in the United States of America and the world,” Oceanside Yacht Club hosts the annual Parade of Lights. Yacht club members couldn’t pin down the exact year Parade of Lights began at Oceanside Harbor, but are glad they can coordinate the event each year for the community. Yacht club member Pat Gadbois loves it: “It’s very community-oriented, and it’s fun because you don’t need to be part of an organization to participate,” said Pat. It’s free to participate and interested parties can register their sea vessel at the office in advance. Located at 1950 North Harbor Drive (the northernmost end of the harbor), the Oceanside Yacht Club is a “members only” club. However, approximately 25% of the members are non-boat owners. The club keeps an active social calendar, including races and 4th of July’s Yankee Doodle Dinghy Parade. Visit Oceanside Harbor this holiday season for dining and shopping and remember to sail down on Saturday, December 10th to delight in Parade of Lights. It’s a nautical holiday event fitting for Oceanside! THEOSIDER.COM

I fell love with the process. As they say, “Love you what you do and you everything else will follow.” That passion continues with everything we produce today.

CELEBRATE THIS HOLIDAY SEASON WITH ZERO WASTE WORDS: JENNA RORIPAUGH  PHOTOS: ZACH CORDNER

THE HOLIDAY SEASON IS UPON US! It’s a time of gathering with family and friends to celebrate and appreciate the abundance we enjoy in our lives. While all of this celebrating brings joy and good cheer, it also brings a wake of unfortunate aftermath—waste! The average American generates an average of 25-percent more waste between Thanksgiving and New Years Day, and an additional three times more food waste according the Environmental Protection Agency. Is all this really necessary? It’s time to rethink our holiday celebrations to not only create less waste, but also simplify the usual craziness. Perhaps in the process we’ll all find a little more joy and a little less stress!

Give the gift of skydiving in Oceanside this holiday season.

GIVE EXPERIENCES THIS YEAR— NOT STUFF! Let’s face it, we all want to experience new activities with the ones we love. Why not make our loved ones happy this year by giving them an activity you can do together and create a special memory? We have so many great experiences right here in Oceanside, from the relaxing to the adventurous. Below are just a few ideas: Massage Restaurant Gift Cards Paddleboarding or Kayaking Whale Watching or Sunset Cruise Rock Climbing Skydiving Workout Classes Event Tickets 46

GET CREATIVE! •

Use last years cards to create personalized cards and wrapping for your friends and family.

Reuse the mason jar from the homemade apple butter you received last year and fill it with an easy soup recipes to keep your loved ones warm this winter.

Shop vintage and thrift stores for unusual picture frames and fill them with photos of special moments shared for that personalized gift.

Give the gift of “Zero Waste” with a cool new reusable shopping bag, lunch container, or water bottle.

PLAN TO REDUCE YOUR WASTE! •

Make sure your guests know they’re attending a “Zero Waste” event. Set up a recycle, landfill, and compost sorting station and make sure guests know where it is.

Ditch the disposables! Uses reusable plates, flatware and cups. A fun idea is to gather unique holiday plates and glassware from your favorite reuse stores. This gets your message of “Zero Waste” to your guests in a festive way that they won’t forget.

Have a finger food party to avoid needing plates and flatware all together!

Make sure you have plenty of reusable containers or aluminum foil on hand for guests to take home leftovers to avoid food waste.

If having a more formal event, contact a local charity that can take your leftovers when the party is over.

After celebrations are over, take advantage of the City’s additional holiday services at your curb. HOLIDAY TREES: Waste Management collects Holiday trees curbside for three weeks following December 25th on your regular collection day. The holiday trees are composted at Oceanside’s El Corazon Compost Facility. However, flocked trees cannot be recycled and must be disposed of through your regular waste services.

HOLIDAY WRAP: Your holiday wrap can be recycled! Just like any other paper product, remember to place your wrapping paper in your blue recycling cart. If you’re extra creative, keep some of your holiday wrapping paper to use for next year’s DIY holiday tags and cards.

DONATE THE OLD WHEN YOU BRING IN THE NEW: So this holiday season you got a new television or computer. That’s great, but don’t forget about your old one. If it still works, then donate it! If not, residents of Oceanside are allowed three pick-ups of up to five bulky items every year, and three pick-ups of up to five e-waste items every year.

Residents can call Waste Management at (760) 439-2824 to schedule their pick-ups at least 24 hours before their regular scheduled collection day. Waste Management will then pick up your items curbside.   47

COMMUNITY

OCEANSIDE’S WOMEN’S RESOURCE CENTER HELPING WOMEN AND FAMILIES IN CRISIS WORDS: ALONDRA FIGUEROA  PHOTOS: ZACH CORDNER

The dedicated team at WRC are here to help.

The Women’s Resource Center has been a long standing community agency in Oceanside since 1974 when a group of five progressive women recognized the need for a crisis services center in North County San Diego. Through the help of grant funding, the center was launched. One of the original founders, Colleen O’Hara, still sits on the board of directors today. Its CEO, Marva Bledsoe, has also been working with the center since the seventies and it’s that kind of love for community and dedication to helping women and children with true perseverance that we want to share. As years went by and demand for the agency’s services continued to grow they expanded their services to include: • • • • • •

Crisis counseling Crisis telephone hotline Victim advocacy Legal service referrals Temporary transportation Information and referrals

THEOSIDER.COM

The largest expansion to the center was made possible in 1994 when the City of Oceanside refurbished an abandoned racquetball facility located at 1963 Apple Street. It was quickly converted into new offices for the Women’s Resource Center. It’s important to note that this is also when the Transition House was formed. This 21 apartment long-term residential facility for domestic violence victims and their children is the largest facility in San Diego County. Remarkably, residents can live there for up to two years while undergoing counseling and learning job skills for future employment. This much-needed respite allows the families to have the stability needed to recuperate together without the fear of financial doom. All new residents receive new home goods, toys for the kids, bedding, toiletries, and even medication! Children must be enrolled in school while living at the Transition House, which can be difficult, as many have had to suddenly leave their schools, communities, and friends behind in search of a safer life. It’s critical to provide an opportunity for 48

children to learn healthy ways of expressing themselves so that they don’t grow up to follow the same patterns of violence that they were subjected to. During this incredibly trying time children are also supported through therapeutic services, support groups, and case managers are there to assist them through every step towards a new peaceful way of living. In 1998, The Women’s Resource Center Thrift Store was opened, providing much needed revenue to augment the government grants. It is located at 3385 Mission Avenue in the shopping center near Tan’s donuts. This was a wonderful addition for the WRC as it allowed women and their children to get new clothes, home goods, and toys, etc. This is so important as it makes families feel prepared for school and look professional for employment opportunities. Residents are even given vouchers, so their purchases are free! Currently, there are two onsite case managers that’ll take your call and work with walk-in clients 24/7 365 days a year. They provide an intake and a safety/high-risk assessment and help formulate

a safety plan then determine what wrap-around services the family can benefit from. Do they need immediate help to get out of a dangerous situation? Then they are referred to the undisclosed safe location where they can stay for up to 28 days. During these 28 days, a safety plan is created—they’re given crisis intervention, therapeutic services, and essentially, anything they need. They need clothes? Done! They need transportation? Provided! They need medications? Taken care of for free! They need help looking for a job? Absolutely! Even legal aid is provided, so that the family can begin to heal without worrying about any burdens. It’s then that they’re finally able to start on their path to real healing. It’s important to know that these services are available whether you stay there as a resident or not. Anyone who has suffered domestic violence can get help, and the center

is also a safe space for the LGBTQ community. The WRC provides many resources and events in support of women, men, and their families—including the special Holiday Spirit of Giving event that provides gifts for those in need at Christmas time. There’s also a food bank that people can access when necessary. Anyone in need can benefit from these generous good tidings! It’s very important to mention that the Center exists due to many generous community members so the WRC can provide these services to our community. It was the large monetary contributions by an anonymous donor that recently paid for remodeling of all the apartment’s kitchens, giving families a real luxury feel when they’re welcomed into their new safe and stable home. The WRC also welcomes donations in the form of new toys, clothes, non-perishable, canned food items, and gift cards.   49

The WRC's wide array of fully furnished apartments are available to those in need.

Chuy at home with his beloved Firewire quiver.

Home grown CHUY REYNA WORDS: JAMEY STONE  PHOTO: ZACH CORDNER

Born in 1967, Chuy Reyna is a true product of Oceanside’s DNA, and his hardworking parents—Francisco and Josephina Reyna. His father is a farmer and his mother is a housekeeper, and both worked many long hours to support their large family. Chuy’s family grew up in a tiny house in South Oceanside, and with twelve brothers and sisters—everyday life was “first come, first serve.” This upbringing taught Chuy how to fend for himself. Whether it was a place to sleep at night, the last bowl of cereal, or just a moment of privacy—growing up in the Reyna household was a true challenge. So when Chuy discovered the ocean and a love for surfing, he never looked back. He was a natural talent and entered his first surfing competition at just twelve years of age where he finished in second place. Chuy was immediately sponsored by Oceanside shaping legend Gary Linden, who mentored him along the way with the help of Tube master John Douglas and Oceanside Pier THEOSIDER.COM

local Gabe Pele. They instilled the fundamentals of respect into his DNA. “It’s a huge part of why Oceanside residents have so much love and respect for each other,” stated Chuy. He went on to win many amateur events and eventually turned pro. He traveled the world surfing contests and documenting his surfing until the 90’s. Chuy hung up his contest jersey and ventured into the snowboarding industry working for key brands like Sessions Outerwear and Santa Cruz Snowboards. Much like the good people who mentored him as a youngster, Chuy continued that tradition by helping many of us younger guys find our way, including Charlie Anderson (owner of The Privateer), Chad Crites (brand manager of FMF apparel) and myself (publisher of this fine magazine). Chuy’s next venture, creating the sunglass brand Dragon Optics, helped him hone his business skill set as a marketing director and brand manager. At the same time, he started his family with beautiful wife Marsha, followed by 50

his lovely daughters Kirra, Emily, and Sophie. After growing Dragon into a leading brand in the Action Sports industry, he began his next venture becoming a partner at Firewire Surfboards where he brought new technology to the surfboard world through advanced design, material, and manufacturing processes that had never before been used to build surfboards at such a high performance level. The brand became so successful that he caught the attention of eleven-time world surfing champ Kelly Slater, as he recently came on board at Firewire as a chief investor. Today, Chuy is surfing better than ever, golfs like a champ, and he loves to call Oceanside his home. In fact, he just recently purchased the same home he grew up in. Only now, it’s being completely remodeled and will have plenty of room for his kids, golf clubs, surfboards, and a fully stocked fridge. I guess you could say that the American dream is alive and well for a blue-collar kid from Oceanside named Chuy Reyna.

WHITLOCK INK & WHITLOCK SURF CO. WORDS: ERIK KLIER  PHOTOS: ZACH CORDNER The beautiful beaches of Oceanside have attracted families to its shores for a long time. This is true for the Whitlock family, who came to Oceanside almost four decades ago and never left. There’re so many great characters in this family, it’s hard to feature just one. It’s also hard to feature just one of the many ventures that define their businesses. Surf schools, screenprinting, shaping, and fixing surfboards are a few of the many things this family has to offer, and so much more. Family patriarch, Rusty Whitlock, has been shaping surfboards and surfing most of his life. After moving to Huntington Beach at an early age, the surf bug bit him and he soon moved to Hawaii and started his family. With a growing family, he soon found himself on the east end of North County. Every chance he had, he brought the whole family to the Oceanside harbor and camped out—raising them with his same passion for the ocean. Rusty started screen-printing to make laminates for his surfboards, which evolved to printing shirts and hats for most of the local businesses in town. Now with the help of son, Cory, they have have two shops on Mission Boulevard, Whitlock Ink for screenprinting and Whitlock Surf Co. for a full service surf shop with THEOSIDER.COM

board rentals and custom surfboards. Cory, a former pro surfer, is a wealth of knowledge about the ocean, and younger brother Ricky is an accomplished pro surfer and big wave rider. They’re always around helping customers with questions, or sometimes they're down on the beach with the Whitlock Surf Experience teaching people how to surf. The Whitlocks are what Oceanside is all about—family. As Cory says, “We’re a family and everyone is welcome to join.” From teaching kids to surf, screen-printing, and shaping great local surfboards—the Whitlocks are providing the community of Oceanside with endless opportunities for fun. They’ve been a permanent fixture in the community for decades, and hopefully, they’ll be here for many more.

POUR HOUSE WORDS: ERIC KLIER PHOTOS: JT RHOADES

There are so many great hot spots in Oceanside; it can be hard to stand out. But when you have live music six nights a week, great drinks and food, and a huge dance floor—people will take notice. The Pour House has become one of Oceanside’s hottest nightspots, and for good reason. There aren’t very many places in North County where you can get great food and drinks and see a large variety of local and touring bands, and that’s exactly what David and Emily Rassel have put together at the Pour House. Growing up in the area and working at a variety of restaurants and bars, Dave wanted to open a place with craft cocktails and a laid back atmosphere that is void of pretentiousness—a place where you can order a Manhattan or a PBR and get truffle fries or wings. They provide a variety of local craft beer and a full service bar complemented by an amazing menu, which features a white truffle mac and cheese, ahi tacos, the Pour House burger, and a kale and quinoa salad. This definitely isn’t your run-of-themill local bar. Some nights it might be a live country or bluegrass band playing, while other nights it could be heavy metal or great DJs playing everything from 70s psych rock to 90s alternative. It’d be wise to check their calendar, THEOSIDER.COM

as new musicians are always coming through. They’re open all day and have many easy-to-view TVs to catch all your sports events, which are usually accompanied with some great specials. It’s always refreshing to see locals putting their heart and soul into their business and the community. Dave and Emily have found a way to do what they love, while starting a family—with their little Waylon and an expected new edition coming soon. They can frequently be seen behind the bar pouring drinks, running food, or 58

doing the inevitable maintenance which comes with having such a popular establishment. The Pour House has become a staple in the music scene in North County, and you’re definitely Executive missing out if you haven’t checked them out Chef yet. William Eick

ROYAL BUFFET

WORDS: AARON SCHMIDT  PHOTOS: ZACH CORDNER

Conveniently located in the valley just off Mission Avenue, Royal Buffet is a bona fide treasure trove of some of the best Asian food in town—and it’s all you can eat! After recently opening for business last June, owner James Chen has brought Oceanside a new dining treat with their amazing Chinese cuisine in a buffetstyle setting. Upon first entering Royal Buffet, you can’t help but notice how massive the place is—at 10,000 square feet there’s plenty of room for a maximum dining experience. Another thing you’ll notice right away is the interior’s fresh and clean aesthetic—ornate Las Vegas-style marble covers the walls and a beautiful chandelier prominently hangs in the entryway to the restaurant’s main floor. So why open a place like this in Oceanside, you ask? “Royal Buffet wants to serve the community good food at a reasonable price. Oceanside didn’t really have a place like this with a wide-open space where people can have an event, dinner gathering, or party,” said Lee Liu, assistant to the owner. “The main thing we serve here is Chinese food, so we like to call it a Chinese buffet.” Royal Buffet’s lunch menu begins 10:30am to 4pm and the dinner menu is from 4pm to 9pm. There’s so much diverse and amazing food on hand, it’s a bit overwhelming at first. “For Chinese food, we mainly serve fried rice, lo mein, orange chicken, jalapeno chicken, beef broccoli, salt pepper shrimp, and salt pepper crab,” smiled Lee. “And we don’t just serve Chinese food; we also have a stocked sushi bar that represents the best in Japanese THEOSIDER.COM

sushi with a variety of different rolls.” As an added plus, they also serve sashimi and nigiri on their dinner menu. The most popular House Special is the Korean Mongolian Beef. Other most popular items include the pineapple chicken, and the grilled fish or “Snow fish” on the dinner menu. “People like the Snow fish very much,” added Lee. Their hibachi grill is also very popular with local favorites like the Pepper Steak and Beef with broccoli with the Hot & Sour soup being the most popular soup dish served. Royal Buffet also serves American food like roast beef, BBQ short ribs, steak, crab legs, oysters, French fries, pizza, and chicken wings. Want to to get your veggies on? They also feature an extensive salad bar that includes every vegetable under the sun and some rare treats like Octopus salad, mussel salad, cocktail shrimp, and seafood salad. Finally, for dessert (if you can fit any more food in your stomach), they have crème Brule, mango pudding, sesame peanut brittle, selfserve ice cream, and an assortment of cakes, cookies, and also the most popular dessert fixture in the entire place—the chocolate fountain! I couldn’t resist hitting up this glorious fountain of chocolate goodness quite a few times during my time at Royal Buffet. I was mesmerized—drawn to it like that one kid from Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory who got sucked into the drain of the chocolate river. Overall, if you like quality meals and on-thespot service for an affordable price, then Royal Buffet is the place for you. Just don’t forget to bring a healthy appetite—you’re gonna need it! 60

POKI POKI

WORDS: BRYN HERRLEIN  PHOTOS: ZACH CORDNER

Poki Poki is a “fast/casual” Poke bowl shop that provides large portions of high quality, fresh ingredients at a reasonable price. Not only known for their large servings and quality, even the most discerning Poke eater will like the variety of fish and toppings. With no serving staff, the customer reaps the benefits in the portions provided. Even though Poki Poki has been open only five months, it’s already a common occurrence that they have a line out THEOSIDER.COM

the door serving happy customers regularly. The variety of fish and toppings offered at Poki Poki is impressive. There are eight types of fish to choose from: Ahi, Albacore, Yellowtail, Salmon, Bay Scallops, Shrimp, Octopus, and Spicy Tuna. If you’re not in the mood for fish, consider the alternative; big smooth cubes of firm tofu that’d make meat eaters hungry. Included in the price is an extensive topping selection that helps you make each bowl into a 62

personal “signature” masterpiece. Green Onion, Edamame, Avocado, Cucumber, Imitation Crab, and Masago are just a few of the toppings available. All of these fresh and delicious ingredients are served with your choice of white rice, brown rice, or spring mix salad and three sauces, ranging from “not spicy” to “spicy.” The fast/casual-style restaurant complements the “Poke” concept for a few reasons. One, the fish is fresh and on display for you to see and choose. Second, Poke is beautiful. When you create your bowl, it’s like a work of art. Since the fish is not marinated or pre-assembled, your poke bowl is made fresh to order. This is your “go-to” place for fast Poke.

ccording to the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, more than 29 million Americans are living with diabetes and 1 in 4 doesn’t even know it. As of the most recent CDC data 86 million individuals aged 20 or older are living with prediabetes, a serious health condition that increases a person’s risk of type 2 diabetes and other chronic diseases. Diabetes is a complication for up to 7-14% of pregnant women, while the prevalence of gestational diabetes is as high as 9.2%.

T

ri-City Medical Center is now affiliated with The California Diabetes and Pregnancy Program (CDAPP) - Sweet Success. The goal of CDAPP Sweet Success program is to promote and support pregnant women living with diabetes and gestational diabetes. The program provides education about healthy eating, meal planning and creating an overall healthy lifestyle for the improvement of maternal and neonatal birth outcomes. Sweet Success also helps decrease the risk of birth defects and development of diabetes after pregnancy for mothers. The foods you eat and changing your lifestyle will give you and your baby the best chance to live a happy and healthy life.
