Gabe Messer

Whenever people speak of Oceanside, one of the first things that come to mind is our very diverse population. I look it as a kaleidoscope of unique and gifted individuals who share a heartfelt pride for our city. Take Gabe Messer, for example. At first glance, you may think, “Who is this bearded creature that looks as if he came straight out of an old road movie?” But in reality, Gabe is a multi-talented musician, wood worker, and guitar maker with Hawaiian lineage that runs deep. He also lives the true meaning of aloha, which is not exactly what you might imagine when you first set eyes on him. There’s also a “Homegrown” on Gabriel Medina—he’s a young Hispanic youth, who at first glance, looks like the average kid growing up in the valley. But once talking with him, you’ll find him to be a bright young man who works hard to educate himself and has the drive to do great things in the future. And then there’s our cover feature on legendary custom hot rod builder Rick Dore and his amazing car creations, all handcrafted in an unassuming garage in Oceanside’s Industrial Park.

Gabriel Medina

Rick makes cars for rock stars. These are just three examples of that melting pot that we are blessed to have represent Oceanside. You can bet that these two are just the tip of the iceberg. We have so many great artists, athletes, scholars, craftsmen, and everything in between. Please, by all means, continue to follow your dreams whatever they may be! The Osider Magazine will continue to share these stories every chance we get. So cheers to all of the gifted people in this corner of the world that we call home! Congratulations on being you.

What do you get when you pair a seasoned East Coast orthopedic specialist and a young gun surgeon who grew up on the West Coast? You get over 700 robotic spine surgeries completed right here in North County. Together, Dr. Neville Alleyne and Dr. Payam Moazzaz find it their passion to give back to the backs of North County through a revolutionary robotic spine surgery option—the Mazor Robotics Renaissance. In traditional open spine surgery, the spine is exposed via a large incision to allow for full view and access by the medical staff. With the Renaissance system, a patients’ CT-scan is paired with the advanced planning software to create a customized surgery diagnosis and procedure plan, guiding the surgeons to the precise locations where treatment is required. With the Renaissance, surgeons are still in complete control of the procedure and the system empowers them to provide pinpoint treatment for patients. THEOSIDER.COM

“Back pain can affect anyone at any age,” said Dr. Moazzaz. “As people age, the body becomes more susceptible to injury, and taking steps to avoid a back injury is important.” Here are a few steps you can take to ensure you have a healthy back and spine: Exercise Muscles are connected to the bones in our bodies and help with movement. If muscles are weak, that can affect posture leading to back pain and potential spine issues. Exercise your spine muscles through what are called ‘core’ exercises—like Pilates and yoga—to keep your back in great shape. Get Up And Move Many medical studies compare sitting to the unhealthy effects of smoking. Make sure you stay active throughout the day and stand up often if you work at a desk. Doing exercises such as bending and twisting at the waist can reduce 18

the stiff feeling in your spine and get your blood pumping again. Lift With The Knees It’s natural to bend at the waist when lifting heavy objects, but that action puts incredible strain on your spine. Instead, keep your spine in a line from tailbone to the top of your head and bend at the knees when picking up objects. Lifting with your knees (not your back) is one of those age-old sayings, but it’s completely true and will save you back pain in your later years. Following these basic tips will allow you to have a happier and healthier life!

Dr. Neville Alleyne and Dr. Payam Moazzaz are orthopedic surgeons affiliated with Tri-City Medical Center. To learn more, please visit tricitymed.org, or call 855.222.TCMC (8262)

Oceanside’s

MAYORJIM WOOD WORDS: PROMISE YEE  PHOTO: ZACH CORDNER

At age 69, Jim Wood grew up in Oceanside and has always felt a part of this city. Early on, he knew he wanted a job that wasn’t behind a desk, and one that he could talk to people. After graduating from Oceanside High School, he went on to study police science at Mira Costa College and Palomar College. He became a police cadet for Oceanside in 1969, and a short time later, he was officially a police officer in 1970. While serving as a police officer and long time police detective, he talked to people during their good and worst times. Covering property crimes, homicides, and child abuse cases—he got to know a wide range of city residents. The challenges community members faced, and efforts to resolve ill situations, sparked Jim’s interest in politics. Initially, he worked behind the scenes helping others with their campaigns. Then he ran and won a City Council seat in 2002. “I ran and immediately won,” said Wood. When he was first elected over a decade ago, Oceanside was cleaning up its downtown, and the city faced huge financial issues. A true “people” person, he ran a door-to-door campaign and made

public safety a priority. He gained rousing support of police, firefighters, and city employees. Wood served two years on City Council, and then ran and won the seat as mayor—which he still serves today. His legacy after fourteen years in office: A drop in city crime, a rebuilt downtown with new hotels and top restaurants, and a more “walk-able” city center that’s bursting with visitors every

“Jim Wood is a mayor who loves a city that loves him back.” Thursday during the street markets. Wood served Oceanside while the city pulled itself up by its bootstraps. The military town, which neighbors Camp Pendleton, endured 1960s and 1970s anti-military draft sentiments and a proliferation of adult nightclubs. Oceanside has since blossomed into an up-and-coming family-friendly beach city embraced by renewed patriotism and respect for military service. As mayor, Jim Wood has worked to create

and enhance these positive changes. He has built strong relationships with Camp Pendleton, which partners with the city in numerous efforts. He also formed positive relationships with Republicans and Democrats at the county, state, and federal level—which has helped Oceanside get things done. A watchdog and civil servant, Wood continues to use his skills for the best of the city. Never taking his eye off the ball, a conversation about his city service quickly turns to present challenges of commercial development delays, some that are about to move forward, city budget limitations, and his annual trip to Washington D.C. to seek funds. After serving as mayor for twelve years, Wood said this could be his last term. He said he’d like to spend more time with family—his beloved wife Pam, three daughters, two son-inlaws, and five grandchildren. He added, “I’ll continue to serve as mayor as long as I’m needed, and then pass the baton to someone who loves the city as much as I do and will keep it moving in a positive direction.”

Salsa! Salsa! Salsa!

Some of The Osider’s favorites are the Veggie Burrito, Grilled Chicken Sandwich, Carne Asada & Al Pastor tacos, and Carnitas plate.

PRIMO MARKET WORDS: ERIC KLIER PHOTOS: JT RHOADES

THEOSIDER.COM

Our beautiful beaches and great restaurants bring tens of thousands of tourists, and Primo Market, located off Pacific Coast Highway and Morse Street, has been serving great produce and cold beer to them for well over fifteen years. Besides having your standard market items, Primo Market serves fresh guacamole and homemade salsas that’ll knock your socks off. After opening in Vista in the mid 90s, Primo moved to Oceanside a few years later. They have a walk-up window that serves complete meals of Carne Asada, Carnitas, and Al Pastor, as well as rice and beans. Every Friday through Sunday they have an outdoor barbecue that has chicken, ribs, tri tip, and much more fresh off the grill. One of the most popular items is their street tacos, which consistently draws large crowds. Primo provides samples of their salsa so you can see what all the fuss is about and they 22

also have a butcher on site and an amazing array of meats cut to perfection. Primo always has the freshest fruit and vegetables from local farms, which they always use in their hot sauces and salsas. Primo is definitely a one-stop shop in the neighborhood and has become a hangout and a great place to rub shoulders with locals. The staff is very friendly and will steer you in the right direction to make your visit as easy as possible. It definitely doesn’t get much better than being able to pick up a couple of tacos, some cold beers, and amazing barbecue all in one place. This is why Primo has lasted so long and continues to be a favorite of locals and tourists alike. Do yourself a favor and see what everyone has been talking about—I don’t think you’ll be disappointed. With years of great service, Primo is surely one of our neighborhood’s best-hidden gems.

THINGS YOU DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT OCEANSIDE AVIATION

Modern air travel captivated Oceanside residents and was met with enthusiasm and excitement. Early aviators were considered thrill seekers, as well as pioneers. Even in its early years, Oceanside welcomed, adapted to, and accommodated the airplane.

THINGS YOU DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT OCEANSIDE AVIATION

5.

As interest in flight progressed, a few local residents purchased planes for themselves, including rancher Melvin Johnson. Johnson and the Clancey brothers used an airfield in the San Luis Rey Valley located on farmland near present day North River Road and Douglas, north of Foss Lake.

6.

Crashes were inevitable, and in 1933, an Army plane from March Field crashed near the Buena Vista Lagoon. Residents of Oceanside from Leonard Street to South Oceanside witnessed the terrifying scene as the plane plummeted from the sky killing all seven aboard.

Alan Essery flying a glider plane, circa 1930.

7.

Two official airports, as opposed to simple landing fields, received approval by the Oceanside City Council in 1946. The Hi Hi Sky Airport near Oceanside Boulevard and Industry Road. Hi Hi Sky was owned and operated by Ken Nill during the period after World War II and the 1950s. The unusual-but-fitting name was borrowed from the Hi Hi Sky Boys Ranch for orphaned and troubled youth located east of the airport. The airport included a 2,400-foot runway, two hangars, an office building, pilots’ lounge and coffee shop, and offered flying lessons. The twostory building that was used for administration and the airport’s coffee shop is still standing.

1.

In 1911, as part of Oceanside’s Labor Day celebration, aviator Frank Champion took off in his “flying machine,” a Bleriot monoplane, to the delight of the crowds. Taking off just south of the San Luis Rey River, the plane flew “nearly half an hour, making four complete circles over the ocean” before landing in a nearby field.

2.

Oceanside was a much-needed stopping point for early flights from Los Angeles to San Diego. For several years, takeoff and landings were made at the Pieper tract off of Hill Street (now Coast Highway) at the north end of town. Another landing field was established on South Ditmar Street between Wisconsin and West Streets. It was also used as an emergency airfield from 1917 to 1925.

3.

The Oceanside-Carlsbad Union High School formed an Aviation Club in 1928. A flighttraining field was located off Mission Avenue, just east of the Oceanside High School decades before the freeway was established.

8. Coastal Aviation Field, circa 1920s.

The crash of 1933 in South Oceanside.

4.

Glider travel also became very popular. Local Oceanside car dealer, DeWitt Martin, was able to arrange glider demonstrations by William Hawley Bowlus, who designed the first American sailplane and became the first U.S. pilot to soar for over one hour. On March 7, 1930, Bowlus made several short “hops” in one of his larger 60-foot wingspan sailplanes at Oceanside, and resident Lionel Van Deerlin helped pull the shock cords which were used to catapult the aircraft aloft— much like a large slingshot. Another notable glider demonstration took place on July 4th, 1930, when glider pilots A. Clare Rand and Alan Richard Essery flew over some curious onlookers at a baseball field on Wisconsin Street. Essery even flew his glider along the beach while being towed with a rope behind an automobile.

THEOSIDER.COM

(Here and Above): Hi Hi Sky Airport near what is now Industry Street and Oceanside Boulevard, circa 1950s.

The second airport was on city-owned land adjacent to the San Luis Rey River in the valley below the Rosicrucian Fellowship. The land was leased to William Lake, Nils Winther, and James Carr. This airport was later designated as the Oceanside Municipal Airport, consisting of a 2500-foot runway, 200 feet wide, and a 60-foot taxi strip parallel to the runway. It was dedicated in April of 1946, and at the time, plans were announced to increase the length of the runway by 1000 feet. A new steel hangar, repair shop, and an administration building with a lounge were also constructed. This airport was later moved in the mid 1960s to make way for development in the valley by the Josepho Brothers, who established the Roymar Land Co. Marc and Roy Josepho donated the land for the new location, which was situated further north of the original airport.

9.

In 1968, Golden West Airlines began passenger service from Oceanside Municipal Airport. The twenty-seat plane took passengers between San Diego and Long Beach. The service last just one year because “passenger loads were not supporting the twice daily service.”

10. 28

Today, the Oceanside Municipal Airport is still operating decades later. Its 2,700

feet runway averages 1,351 landings and take offs each month. The airfield was renamed the Bob Maxwell Memorial Field. Maxwell was an advocate of Oceanside’s airport and a former bomber pilot with the famed Tuskegee Airman.   29

RICK

DORE WORDS: ADAM SULLIVAN  PHOTOS: ZACH CORDNER

IS AN ARTIST AND HIS MEDIUM IS CARS Ten years ago, Rick Dore came to Oceanside from Phoenix. What started as a three-month visit evolved into a permanent residence for Dore. Rick's one-of-a-kind hot rod masterpieces have made him the "go-to" choice for high-end custom car aficionados and rockstars like Metallica's James Hetfield. In between crafting his latest car creations, Rick is also the co-host of the Discovery Channel's Lords of the Car Hoards. Now, while working on his second television series, we checked in to see how this Oceanside transplant is living.

So when you first came to Oceanside, you were already synonymous with custom cars and hot rods. But Lords of the Car Hoards hadn’t yet happened. How did it all come together? I passed, actually, the first time they approached me. My wife said, “Are you crazy? Network television?” Well, these were cars I was building twenty years ago. I’d already moved on to other things. I knew the premise of the show; they wanted to reach out to hoarders. What made you finally come around? When I finally decided to do it, it was kind of my way of giving back. I thought, “You know, these are people who’d never have a Rick Dore car. And the exposure would be great.” Sure, but I had no idea how big it was going to be. It was your first interaction with the backend of reality television. Was the experience more or less what you anticipated? It was a lot more difficult than I thought it was going to be. But we had a lot of fun doing it. So you’ve been here for a decade. Where are your go-to haunts here in Oceanside? Vigilucci’s is my Italian place. There’s a coffee shop up the hill past where all the bicycles are— Jitters, I stop there for coffee. Even this business park here [where Rick’s garage is located] is THEOSIDER.COM

pretty friendly, even though it’s pretty transient. Nobody bothers me here. In fact, everything I need is here in Oceanside. And the movie theater on Mission, I’m always there. That whole area, it’s a great little downtown. So when you found out that the show wasn’t getting picked up for a third season, you mentioned that you had a bunch of irons in the fire. Did you have one foot out the door anyway? There were a couple times when I felt like I wanted to walk, but that was just spur-of-the-moment stuff—just me being pissed. They got a lot of that on camera. I just turned 60. I’m not going to be building cars forever. And I have a son and

a daughter who are both into custom cars and hot rods. My son Michael has been on the show several times; my daughter’s a hot-rod chick, and she’s 30. They want to get in the business, make it grow, and carry on the legacy. I mean, I don’t want to sound cocky, or big-headed, but there’s nobody in the world right now—that I know of—who’s doing cars like this. It seems like custom car building is a massive world, but you’ve single-handedly created a niche for yourself. Yeah. And it really is just the rock stars that can afford cars like these. Because when you get into one of these projects, you can’t get halfway and then think, “Oh, we’re going to pull back.” Because if I walk away, it’s not going to get finished. If Marcel [DeLay] falls over, there’s nobody else in the country that’s going to be able to do it—at least not in a timely manner. These cars were done quickly.   37

What would you ballpark for a full build-out? Two years. And even then, it’s incredible. It sounds like there are a lot of people that have to be involved, and a lot of back and forth—a lot of science before the art. There’s no miracle shop that I know of that’s doing the chrome plating, the upholstery, the chassis, and the bodies—I mean, it’s a team effort. It’s collaboration between Marcel, Eric Brockmeyer (the artist), and myself. Eric can do the technical stuff I can’t do. Neither can Marcel. He did a lot of the Boyd bodies from American Hot Rod, and they were doing them on the backs of paper napkins. But with me, I want them to look like a Rick Dore car, not a Marcel car.

GABE MESSER

OCEANSIDE'S AMBASSADOR OF STOKE WORDS: CHRIS COTÉ PHOTOS: ZACH CORDNER

For most people, it’s extremely difficult to pinpoint the exact time and place that their path in life was chosen. For Oceanside’s Gabe Messer, a life in rock ’n’ roll wasn’t something he chose—it chose him. It grabbed him hard the first time he heard the opening riff to “Space Truckin’” by Deep Purple. It captured his attention on one fateful trip in his mom’s VW bus when, at age five, he figured out the rhythm to Jimi Hendrix’s “Voodoo Child”

by slapping his knee along to the song. From his earliest memories, it was all about rock ’n’ roll. “It was 1992,” Messer immediately answered when asked about his first guitar. “I borrowed a beat-up acoustic guitar from a friend that only had three strings. I asked to borrow it for a week—I kept it for a year!” he laughed. From there, things got louder. At twelve years old, Messer saved up his money

and bought a Lotus Stratocaster. He immediately started a band in his mom’s garage. “None of us knew what we were doing,” smiled Gabe. “But it was loud and fun—until the cops got called. We had to move garages a lot, but since then, I’ve always been in bands.” At age fifteen, Gabe started touring with his first “real” band, The Rudies, playing shows, touring, and learning his chops. Things started getting more serious when Messer joined forces with The Drowning Men, a highly acclaimed indie-rock band formed in Oceanside that has taken Messer around the world and back. Gabe has been in a lot of epic bands, including Against The Wall, RAD, Red Octopus, Harsh Toke, and his two current projects called Age (a synth band), and Volcano (an afro beat style band). At any given time, Gabe Messer is in three-to-five bands—all unique, and all awesome. Between all the shows, tours, recordings, and writing new music, Gabe found his second passion in life— building guitars. “As a long time guitar tech, I’ve always taken guitars apart and worked on them,” said Messer. “I built my first guitar in 2015, and I have to admit—it was really cool.” Gabe’s right, it was cool. The first Messer Guitar was a beauty. Made of walnut with a psychedelic print, a heavy leather pick guard, and hand-done inlays, etc. Gabe’s first guitar wasn’t perfect, as there may have been a phantom buzz, but by guitar two or three—they sound as incredible as they look. Gabe has since taken his love of woodworking in

to the realm of custom cabinets, furniture, interiors for restaurants, and large-scale fabrications, but his true love will always be guitars. Messer has built seventeen guitars, both six string and bass. Some of the bands that you can see his guitars in action include Flogging Molly, WITCH, Harsh Toke, as well as a few lucky friends and family members who have ordered custom axes. Need a walnut “Flying V” with a real scorpion inlay, leather pick guard, and custom   39

pearl inlays? Gabe can do it. In fact, he’s doing that right now!

COMMUNITY

OCEANSIDE PUBLIC LIBRARIES FINDING PARADISE IN BOOKS WORDS: ELIZABETH SCHWARTZE  PHOTOS: RENORDO BOWEN

One of the most endearing aspects of the library system is the kid’s programming, created to encourage young readership. Each library holds an impressive offering of children’s books for kids of all ages. There’s a desk dedicated to helping children, and computers with kid-friendly games. Check the calendar for a variety of kid’s programs, which include weekly story times to foster reading skills for beginning readers, and after-school activities for school-age readers. The libraries are a welcoming environment for teens. The Teen Zone! is stocked full of literature, music collections, and access to PCs. Teen Zone! has its own designated area offering a respite for teens to work on homework or to dive into a good book. There are a few ways teens can get involved with the community via the library. Teen book clubs are held each month for grades 6-12. Teen Partners allows teens aged 14 - 18 to volunteer to help younger kids or work in the library. Enrichment programs are available for teens, too. In March, collegebound teens can also take practice ACT and SAT tests free of charge, thanks to Friends of the Oceanside Library. There are two non-profit organizations in Oceanside that work hard to ensure the Oceanside libraries are pillars in the community. One is the Friends of the Oceanside Public Library (FOPL) that was founded in 1971 to support and promote the services and resources offered by the Oceanside Library. The other is the Oceanside Public Library Foundation. Started in 2003, it stewards projects that enhance the Oceanside libraries with private fundraising and endowments. The OPL Foundation’s most recent projects include remodeling the Mission Branch Library and installing new carpet at the Civic Center Library. Both organizations welcome support.

Atop the Oceanside Civic Center Library, a banner recently read, “I have always imagined that Paradise will be a kind of library,” by Jorge Luis Borges. Fortunately for Oceanside residents, the city houses two such literary paradises: The Civic Center Library, and the Mission Branch Library. With two full-service libraries and two mobile libraries, the key to paradise may be the Oceanside library card in your wallet. The public library system began in Oceanside in 1904 when, according to the City of Oceanside, the Women’s Christian Temperance Union donated a small collection of books. Starting in 1915, the library moved to several different locations throughout downtown Oceanside until it settled in its current location in 1989. In 1968, the Bookmobile started offering mobile library services. As Oceanside’s population grew to the east, the second library— Mission Branch Library—was opened in 1986. The recently renovated Civic Center Library, and the Mission Branch Library are full-service libraries. Open to the public, visitors will find: • • • • • •

Home grown GABRIEL MEDINA WORDS: JAMEY STONE PHOTO: ZACH CORDNER

As publisher of The Osider magazine, I’m often asked the same question: “Aren’t you afraid that you’ll eventually run out of stories to write about?” My answer is always the same—never. There are so many great people, places, and things to write about here in the O. Everyday, it seems like we meet someone who has an amazing story to tell. Take Gabriel Medina, for instance. When I first met Gabe, he was bussing tables at Teri Café. This kid had so much positive energy that every time I went in for my ramen, I found myself learning more about this positive young man. Born to his immigrant parents in 1992, his father worked as a stock boy in the grocery business while taking on side work whenever possible. His stay-at-home mom took care of Gabe, two sisters, and a younger brother. While growing up in the Valley between the Mesa and Arthur Street neighborhoods, Gabe kept himself busy playing organized soccer and later became a B-boy dancer. He graduated form El Camino High School in 2011. During that time, he began getting into the tuner car scene, which led him to starting a car club with his friends. They all sat down and THEOSIDER.COM

worked on a name for the club that would encompass all of their personalities. After suggesting many names, one friend blurted out, “What about Emanon? It means ‘no name’ backwards!” And so Emanon was born. At the same time, Gabe always had a taste for fashion

“Oceanside has great pride and genuine people with a lot of diversity, and that brings me a ton of inspiration.” and had started college at Mira Costa where he studied graphic design. The car club quickly turned into a clothing brand, and with the help of his cousin Victor Dominguez and his silkscreen machine—Gabe started to realize his future. On a whim, he reached out to the streetwear brand The Hundreds and secured an internship for the major brand. He’d drive up to LA twice a week for the internship, all while going to school and 44

working at the same time. Today, Emanon is still a small start up brand, but Gabe has big plans for his future. He looks to brands like Brixton for inspiration as they started out of their garage in Oceanside, too. When I asked Gabe how he feels about our city, his response was simple. “Oceanside has great pride and genuine people with a lot of diversity, and that brings me a ton of inspiration.” Gabe hopes to get a graphic design job with a brand like Brixton in the future. He also plans to continue grow Emanon on the side, but his main goal is to take over as the bread winner for his parents and give back to his family that’s always supported him. He’d also like to thank his friends, family, girlfriend, and everyone who’s supported him and Emanon. Gabe has a bright future, and we here at The Osider are proud to share his story.

OCEANSIDE ACE HARDWARE WORDS: ALICIA STONE  PHOTOS: CHRISTOPHER DONEZ If you’ve ever taken on a home improvement project or tackled a repair job that may be just a little above your handy-man capabilities, then you have also had the frustrations of standing in one those huge aisles in a chain store completely overwhelmed. Usually, one of two things happens: You either wait anxiously for someone in an apron to save you or you give up and walk back to your car in defeat. This is one of the main reasons Michelle and Matthew Pike opened a local ACE hardware in November of 2016. “There was really just a huge lack of hardware along the PCH,” said Michelle. “With all the growth happening along the coast of Oceanside, it seemed like this neighborhood was screaming for an ACE store.” THEOSIDER.COM

Since ACE is widely known for great customer service, Michelle said her store is all about convenience and figuring out the community needs. “We will continue bringing in new products like bait and tackle, beach and picnic gear, unique gifts, and home décor.” She added, “We have an extensive hardware section that you won’t find at the big box stores. We love talking with our customers, learning about their projects, and helping them find solutions.” Of course, they also carry all the standard products like paint, grills, tools, garden items, and plumbing and electrical supplies. Owners Michelle and Mike, originally from San Francisco and Seattle, currently reside in Carlsbad (with their daughter Tayla and dog 48

Cooper), but say that they spend all of their time in our town. “We chose Oceanside because we are from big city melting pots, so the diversity and creativity here really appeals to us. Oceanside is experiencing a real Renaissance with an eclectic mix of businesses and we love being a part of such a great community—we all really want each other to succeed!” It was a longing to belong to a community that got them looking for a way out of the nine-tofive workday and ready to open their own business. After looking into everything from coffee shops to action sports to day spas, it was a conversation with Michelle’s father, owner of three ACE stores in Montana, that got her into the family business. “We knew we wanted to make a positive impact and ACE is known for customer service, local contribution, and the ability to customize for the local market. Everything just clicked for us,” said Michelle. As we all gear up for another great summer, Michelle also said they’re looking forward to participating in local events and stocking up on beach and out-door products for our visitors and locals. She added, “We never get tired of hearing our customers say how happy they are that we’re here. It’s an exciting time in Oceanside and we’re thrilled to be a part of it!” So, next time you need something for whatever project lies in front of you, save yourself the big chain store headache and shop small— the Pike family will be there ready to help you.

HARNEY SUSHI WORDS: BRYN HERRLEIN  PHOTOS: ZACH CORDNER

Harney's most popular roll, the En Fuego Roll.

Around sixteen years ago, Harney Sushi was realized in Old Town San Diego on Harney Street—it’s namesake. Owners Kirk Harrison and Dustin Summerville created a hip spot that serves cutting edge sushi in an urban setting that caters to the locals. Harrison credits their guerilla marketing from distributing flyers to concert goers, club owners, and bartenders to hiring local DJs and artists, for their success. After seven years, Harney’s had established themselves as a legitimate popular restaurant creating innovative rolls made with high-end ingredients. Also, participating in San Diego culinary events lead to the rise of Chef Rob Ruiz’s local chef celebrity status. Riding a wave of popularity, Harney’s found a second location to call “home” in Oceanside. Hand picked for the tight knit community and deep local history, Harney’s Sushi Oceanside planted its roots in 2008. Located a short walk from the pier, Harney’s bold and modern “funk shui” design with its use of warm woods and bright color marries its urban origin with this coastal beach town. On the inside, it’s warm and inviting—this 3,500-sq. ft., 155seat restaurant features floor to ceiling windows and an amazing ocean view. LED lighting and bamboo plywood gives Harney’s a “green” restaurant design and feel. Harney Sushi hosts one of the best and most popular brunches in town. Featuring uniquely delicious items like their breakfast sushi (Bacon & Egg roll) and Panko Crab Cakes Benedict that’ll surely get your day started off in the right direction. The mimosas can’t hurt, either. To start off your dining experience, you must try their Specialty Edamame like the Smoked Salt, Garlic Manchego, Sesame Bacon THEOSIDER.COM

Bonito, or Soy Truffle. So many different flavors to choose from, it’s hard to nail down just one. How about try them all? You can also get your “salad” on with the Farmer’s Market Salad that includes arugula and frisee, farmer’s market vegetables, and banyul vinaigrette or there’s always the Ahi Poki salad that features tuna, chuka salad, green onions, sesame seeds, and togarashi. When it comes to preparing sushi, Harney’s only serves the freshest most sustainable fish. Popular rolls include the En Fuego that features tempura asparagus, kani kama, and spicy rock shrimp salad wrapped in soy paper top with kampachi, avocado, and mango-habanero salsa. Our personal favorite would have to be the O’sider#55 roll that features spicy crab, shrimp tempura, rolled in soy paper, topped with thin slice NY strip, avocado, fried onion, jalapeno, and sweet chili sauce. For the vegetarians, there’s the Eggplant to Fakie Roll that includes pickled radish, cucumber, and avocado topped with Japanese eggplant, and sweet tamari sauce. Another veggie delight is the Hippie Roll that features tempura sweet potato, shitake mushroom, avocado, cucumber, and tempura crunchies. It’s important to add that all the rolls on offer at Harney are completely delicious and worth a try. For dessert, you can delight in the Vanilla Bean or Green Tea Ice Cream and Perfect Cheesecake. Overall, Harney Sushi appeals to all walks of life and has become a cherished neighborhood sushi spot. With affordable prices in a relaxed atmosphere, what you get is quality sushi, great service, and a full belly. Harney’s features live music every Thursday and Sunday from 6:30 to 10:30pm, so what’s stopping you from enjoying some of Oceanside’s best sushi in town? 50

(L to R): Buffalo Chicken/Meat Lover's pizza, Vegetarian Tomato Basil/Whitestone pizza, Calzone, garlic knots, and Oh Baby salad.

Located a stone’s throw away from the pier on Mission Avenue, Knockout Pizza has been serving up some of the best New York style pizza in North County. Owner Timothy Farley, originally from Massachusetts, has helmed the K.O. ship for fourteen years and has owned nine restaurants back east since 2002. The downtown Carlsbad location opened in 1999 to rave reviews. Cut to 2016 and Farley had his eyes on opening up another K.O. restaurant in Oceanside: “Many of our staff’s family grew up in Oceanside,” said Timothy. “Our General Manager (at the Oceanside location) Alan Lopez is a long time Oceanside resident. The entire staff weighed in on the decision to open the new location and we went for it.” Knockout Pizza officially opened its doors in Oceanside last May and quickly became a local favorite. Knockout’s pizza is “thick skinned and thin crusted” with a distinct and delicious New York style. They make their own dough everyday and keep it simple with no added oils or sugar. With so many amazing options to choose from, it’s hard to pinpoint a favorite. You really can’t go wrong starting off with their highly addictive Garlic Knots—six little bundles of joy for your taste buds. The Buffalo Chicken and Meat Lover’s pizza is hugely popular as you get more variety from different choices for toppings with a “half and half” pizza. The Knockout is another popular pizza that features pepperoni, mushrooms, and garlic. THEOSIDER.COM

For the healthy eaters, there’s the Tomato Basil Garlic and Whitestone pizza that features sliced tomatoes, fresh garlic, basil, Parmesan, and Ricotta. Or you can try their Oh Baby Salad with mixed baby greens, homemade candied walnuts, juicy Mandarin orange slices, and aged gorgonzola cheese crumbles topped with K.O.’s signature gourmet balsamic vinaigrette. It’s not all pizza at K.O. as they also serve other treasures like their Calzone with mushrooms, spinach, and sausage. Gluten-free pies are also available upon request. Thirsty and need to wet your whistle? Knockout Pizza was the first restaurant to carry new local brewing companies like Left Coast Brewing Company, Culver Brewing, Fall Brewing, Booze Brothers, and Barrel Harbor. For dessert, why not try out a California Cheesecake In A Cup? K.O. is the only place in town that carries these delicious treats—just another reason why you need to cruise in and check them out. When asked what his favorite thing about having a business in Oceanside, Timothy replied, “The people of Oceanside have a truly unique vibe. There’s a proud swagger running through them that’s similar to the swagger in a boxer or MMA fighter. Oceanside people love Oceanside. I once overheard one of our managers proudly state, ‘OSIDE or NOSIDE!’ I loved hearing that.” 52

Oceanside has been going through many changes the past few years, but some things like Mariscos Ensenada have stayed the same for over two decades. Located on the southwest corner of El Camino Real and Oceanside Boulevard, Mariscos Ensenada has been a local favorite and a great reason to leave our beautiful beaches to enjoy some of the best food North County has to offer. This family-run operation started little over twenty years ago by the Perez family and is now being run by son Carlos and brother-in-law Javier who have taken the wheel and are staying true to an awesome authentic dinning experience. If you didn’t know, Mariscos means “seafood” and they definitely have some of the best in town. The portions here are enormous and two people can share one of their many large plates. While having the standard burritos and tacos, they also offer items such as Mojarra Frita, which is a delicious whole tilapia deepfried with a side of shrimp broth and it’s absolutely delicious! They also are open for breakfast and have one of the best breakfast burritos in town. One of my favorite dishes here is the steaming hot 7 mares soup, which consists of a giant bowl of mixed seafood that’ll fill up the healthiest of appetites.
