SET IN STONE A WORD FROM THE PUBLISHER

It’s 2018—can you believe it? Nothing seems to be slowing down here in Oceanside. I guess the secret’s out and people from all around the nation finally see what us longtime residents have known for years—Oceanside is the best place to live on the coast of Southern California. For good reason, too—we have it all. We have the best beaches, amazing food, diverse local businesses, and great breweries. Over the past three years we have been on a crazy growth pattern. So now’s the time to “keep it local” and support the small businesses like never before. I think I speak for most when I say that we don’t THEOSIDER.COM

want downtown to become riddled with big box franchises. Instead, let’s support the “mom and pop” stores, local eateries, and coffee shops. Let’s keep that small town vibe thriving like never before. Lets keep the tax dollars and cash flow streaming within our own community. Don’t get me wrong—I love what’s happening here, but I also love how we’ve set the tone of our city over the last twenty years. I say “welcome” to all the newcomers, but let’s not forget what we’re all about—supporting our community and taking good care of each other. Let’s all stick together and keep Oceanside moving forward with our core values firmly intact. 6

With that said, we’ve loaded this issue to the rim with great features like 10 things You Didn’t Know About St. Malo, bird watching at the Buena Vista lagoon, and, of course, a little something about the birds and the bees—courtesy of longtime Beekeeper Brother Blaise. Happy New Year, and #keepitlocal

LOCAL FLAVOR

BANANA DANG To start off the New Year, we here at The Osider want to share one of our favorite morning treats—the Dirty Nutty Dang Smoothie from Banana Dang! Banana Dang’s very own Mario Jimenez and ThanhThanh (a.k.a. T2) were kind enough to share their recipe on how to make your very own Dirty Nutty Dang Smoothie at home. THEOSIDER.COM

16

THEOSIDER.COM

ice 1 cup Soy milk (or Almond milk) 1 oz. chocolate syrup

1 tablespoon creamy peanut butter 1 frozen banana 2 Espresso shots

1 tablespoon Hemp protein

Our intention is to make espresso taste good no matter what form it takes—with milk, over ice, blended with chocolate, etc. But we never thought a smoothie would make the list until a devoted Nutty Dang drinker suggested we spike his drink with a double shot. He originally wanted it with vodka, but that’s another story. Dirty Nutty Dang is our most popular smoothie at Banana Dang. It tastes like a healthier version of a Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup, but beware—it’s very “dirty!” It’s a protein packed banana, chocolate, and peanut butter smoothie with a zing from espresso that’s creamy enough to be a milkshake, and healthy enough for breakfast. Added boosts like whey and hemp rightfully crown this drink as a nutritious breakfast, snack, or post-workout meal for fitness “lifestylers.” We started off by perfecting the Nutty Dang. The peanut butter has to be creamy and preferably salted. We like it with thick consistency, but smooth enough to suck down without a straw. But let’s talk about why it’s amazing. Besides the flavor, you have four sources of protein! Four! There’s soymilk, banana, peanut butter, and an added boost of your choice. Most folks opt for almond milk and even almond butter, but that doesn’t matter. Dirty Nutty Dang just works. What we promise is you’ll never find espresso-flavored powders at Banana Dang. Our intention is to use delicious, real espresso. Alter our recipe based on your likes—a little more of this, a little less of that.

1 tablespoon vanilla powder

HOW TO MAKE DIRTY NUTTY DANG SMOOTHIES INGREDIENTS 2 shots of espresso 1 tablespoon creamy peanut butter 1 frozen banana 1 tablespoon vanilla powder 1 oz. chocolate syrup 1 tablespoon Hemp protein 1 cup Soy milk (or Almond, etc.) Add ice and blend until smooth.

HOW WILL YOU PROTECT THE PLANET IN 2018? PHOTOS: RENORDO BOWEN

As we welcome in the New Year, many of us pause to reflect on the past and plan changes we’d like to make in 2018 to better our lives. As you consider your plan, remember there are many small steps toward a sustainable lifestyle that can have a huge impact on not only your well-being, but also the well-being of our planet. Start with small commitments that you’ll be able to easily incorporate into your routine. Choose one new sustainable action for a one-tothree month period. As this action becomes part of your everyday life, choose another. Before you know it, you’ll have reduced the impact you have on our planet, and possibly inspired your friends and family to do the same.

Vallie Gilley

Take a look at the list below for a few places to start.

• I will buy recycled-content toilet paper and paper towels to support recycling.

• I will shop at the farmer’s market at least once a month to support local farming.

• I will sign up for a free Green Oceanside Sustainability Workshop and receive a free compost bin. To reserve a spot, please email greenoceanside@ci.oceanside.ca.us

• I will donate all of my unwanted items (instead of sending them to the landfill), and shop resale and vintage stores whenever possible. • I will save energy by replacing at least one light bulb a month with an LED bulb. • I will dine at local farm-to-table restaurants to support our local sustainable food system. • I will pack snacks or lunch each day in a reusable container or bag to avoid buying over packaged snacks throughout the day.

These and many other small sustainability actions that we take as a community will help preserve our planet and resources for future generations. Start 2018 off sustainably and do your part now! For more information on the City’s Green Oceanside programs and services, please visit greenoceanside.org

• I will say “no” to straws when I go to a restaurant because they cannot be recycled or I will us a reusable or paper straw • I will protect our waterways by using nontoxic cleaning products. • I will properly dispose of all toxic materials such as motor oil, paint, and yard chemicals to keep them from harming our land and water. • I will save water by taking shorter showers.

LYDIA PETROFF WORDS: ELIZABETH SCHWARTZE  PHOTO: ZACH CORDNER

Three years ago, Lydia Petroff returned to her roots. After years in the fashion industry, she moved back to Oceanside. Her position as the Visitor Services Manager at the California Welcome Center is the perfect way to learn more about her beloved hometown, while simultaneously promoting its attractions. From her first introduction to Oceanside in the 1970s to present day, she’s so excited about Oceanside’s progress and shares that through her work. “It’s a great opportunity to be part of economic development for a community I love,” said Lydia. She’s also actively investing in the youth of Oceanside through her alma mater, Oceanside High School, as a board member on the Oceanside High School Foundation. Like many residents, Lydia found her way to Oceanside through the military. The Marines stationed her father on Camp Pendleton in 1974. As a typical teenager, she wasn’t excited about uprooting and leaving Tucson, Arizona. Her perspective changed when her family arrived at their assigned officer housing and her new home backed up to Oceanside Harbor. “I became a California girl pretty quickly, and that never changed,” said Lydia. She graduated from

Oceanside High School, and then fell in love with and attended San Diego State University (SDSU). Lydia is very involved and passionate about both her alma maters. Lydia volunteers in her position on the board of directors for the Oceanside High School Foundation. She loves supporting the students

“Our organization supports the faculty, school programs, and students who are our next leaders, entrepreneurs, and workforce” and staff with grants and scholarships. “Our organization supports the faculty, school programs, and students who are our next leaders, entrepreneurs, and workforce,” Lydia explained. “I love to work with the other passionate alums on the Foundation board who have a heartfelt love for this community.” In 2017, Oceanside High School Foundation gave out approximately $11,000 for Senior Awards and about $3,300 for faculty grants.

The California Welcome Center in Oceanside is one of seventeen centers spread throughout California, and the only one in San Diego County. As the Visitor Services Manager, Lydia is responsible for showcasing not only the city, but the entire county to the 60,000-plus people that walk through the door. She manages 60 volunteers, and two part-time staff members to ensure that all visitors needs are met. Along with everything needed to plan a vacation, the CA Welcome Center sells discount attraction tickets, so she recommends locals visit the Welcome Center, as well. Lydia loves that she can proudly recommend Oceanside’s abundance of great attractions, places to eat, and drink. She notes that no other city can boast a harbor, pier, and mission within its borders. Her favorite place to eat dinner is any place where her son, Corey Leal, and his band, Wish And The Well, play venues like the Pour House and Master’s Kitchen & Cocktail. The Harbor is the most likely place to find her outside of work: “The clanking of the boats, the seagulls, going to the beach, and the great surf breaks are what make the Harbor my favorite place in Oceanside,” smiled Lydia.

The Classic

(L to R): Butter Croissant, Cronut, Creme Brulee, and Tiramisu

Originally from Laos, Le Rendez-vous French Bakery owner Neng Nheayely is a classically trained Paris pastry chef. After moving to France when he was just five years old, Neng went on to live just outside of Paris for the next 30 years. While living there, he went to culinary school and became a master pastry chef. Neng then moved to the U.S. in 2006 to fulfill his dream of starting his own bakery. Opened back in August of 2006, Le Rendez-Vous French Bakery is neatly positioned in the unassuming Rancho Del Oro Gateway Shopping Center. Standing just outside its door, you can smell the beautiful and fragrant aromas of its French pastries. Le Rendez-Vous brings you a taste of the finest France has to offer in baked goods. Upon first entering the bakery, a plethora of baguettes, croissants, and all kinds of pastries like Eclairs, Macarons, Opera Cakes and Tarte Au Fruits greet you from under the glass of the display case. “Everything is made from scratch. We mostly serve French pastry, French desserts, and French bread,” smiled Neng. “Our croissants are very fluffy and light.” The Almond, Apricot, and Blueberry croissants are very popular. My personal favorite is their chocolate almond croissant. So good! Their special Opera Cake is also very popular as THEOSIDER.COM

well. Le-Rendezvous’ best selling breads are the Cherry, Cranberry, and Walnut sourdough. The French Breakfast is a good “go-to” with your choice of two French rolls (or one croissant) and a large house coffee, tea, or orange juice. They also bake their own Cronuts—a wonderful pastry that’s a mix between a croissant and a donut. They’re flakey and fluffy like a croissant with the sweet-smelling aroma from a donut. LeRendezvous’ cronuts will change your life! For lunch, the Parisian sandwiches, Panini’s, and Crepes are legit. With a wide variety of sandwiches to choose from like the Parisien (ham and butter), Brie (cheese and butter), and the Classic (ham, Swiss cheese, and butter) to name a few, Le-Rendezvous has you covered for any French lunchtime quick fix. To compliment Le-Rendezvous’ tasty treats, they also offer a full selection of coffee, lattes, and espressos from one of the best local roasters—the Artisan Collection by Farmer Brothers. “When people want strong coffee, they come here,” said Neng. If you’re looking for authentic French pastries and more, look no further because this hidden gem should be your first stop. Just make sure to go early when they’re bringing out the fresh bread and pastries—the sweet smell will surely put a big smile on your face. 22

“My goal is to help people reconnect to themselves”

BLACK SHEEP YOGA STUDIO WORDS: ELIZABETH SCHWARTZE  PHOTOS: ZACH CORDNER Black Sheep Yoga is South Oceanside’s community yoga studio. According to owner, Candice Core: “We have something for everybody here.” That philosophy permeates their business ethic because the classes are varied, and the teachers are inclusive. She considers Black Sheep a studio where people can heal and find yoga. Her students agree. “It’s the space, it’s awesome. The teachers really focus on calming and your being, and they really care. We’re a community,” explained Theresa, a long-time student. Black Sheep Yoga opened in 2012, and has been owned by Candice since January 1st, 2016. The former owner named it “Black Sheep” because he believed he was the “black sheep” of the family. Candice came to Oceanside via Texas, where a visit here turned into a calling. Candice followed her heart and that ultimately led to her buying her favorite yoga studio. The 1,600 square-foot studio has flourished under her ownership, and is a staple on the South Oceanside powerhouse block of businesses. Not only is Black Sheep Yoga a small business, Candice supports vendors in their entrepreneurial endeavors. The shop is stocked with yoga essentials and gifts that complement the studio’s THEOSIDER.COM

ethics, including empowering women. All the teachers at Black Sheep have obtained their 500-hour yoga teacher training. They come from different backgrounds, and that’s reflected in the variety of classes offered, including a class called Yoga Rocks (yoga to rock music). A thoughtful class Black Sheep offers is a free yoga class for cancer survivors called Be Well. (Check the schedule online or stop in for more details). Currently in the works, Candice hopes to offer SUP (Stand Up Paddleboard) Yoga at Oceanside Harbor as a public class. She currently does private and group SUP Yoga with her own paddleboards, but intends to put it on her class schedule. Her favorite local activity outside of the yoga studio includes a full moon sunset paddle at Oceanside Harbor. Black Sheep Yoga is an affordable, peaceful studio and was created as a place for everyone. “My goal is to help people reconnect to themselves,” stated Candice. “You don’t have to give in to fit in. Just be yourself!” A quick visit to Black Sheep Yoga and it’s apparent that her message has been received.

THINGS YOU DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT

ST. MALO BEACH COLONY At the end of Oceanside’s South Pacific Street, a privacy gate guards a neighborhood of upscale homes with an interesting-but-enigmatic history. Today, St. Malo is still exclusive, but a lot less spacious with over 80 homes. However, it still provides an air of mystery as to who lives beyond its entrance. WORDS: KRISTI HAWTHORNE PHOTOS COURTESY OF OCEANSIDE HISTORICAL SOCIETY

A fishing boat washed up on shore at St. Malo in 1984.

Looking north through the gate from inside St. Malo, 1967.

1.

Kenyon A. Keith, a wealthy resident of Pasadena, purchased 28 acres of oceanfront property in 1928. The following year he began developing a colony with custom built homes that were designed to resemble a French fishing village, St. Malo.

1965

2.

Residency was by invitation only and limited to family and hand-selected friends. Outsiders need not apply. (And contrary to an internet/blog rumor, Al Capone never lived in St. Malo. There’s no evidence whatsoever to support this and he simply didn’t have the pedigree!)

3.

St. Malo homes were weekend hideaways for the wealthy, wanting to escape from the city. Families didn’t merely vacation at St. Malo— they “summered” there. They brought a full staff, with maids and cooks as most homes were built with “servants quarters.”

Author Ben Hecht's children's story written in St. Malo.

4.

Homes were fondly described by owners as “storybook cottages” or “chalets.” One permanent resident was Maude Ringen Drummond. Her home was noted for its spectacular marbled patio and marbled stairway to the beach.

Races. Close (and always wealthy) friends of the owners were allowed to rent or even borrow houses for social gatherings and vacations.

6.

Although Oceanside residents were not likely privy to the comings and goings of colonists, their activities were posted in the society pages of the Los Angeles Times that featured headlines such as “St. Malo is Favorite for Pasadena Folk;” “St. Malo Beckons Social Set;” “St. Malo Beach

Hums With Activity.” The social columnists promoted the exclusivity of St. Malo, but it also provided the names of the socialites and families that were staying there, along with their activities and other gossip. They boasted that St. Malo parties were better than any in Hollywood.

7.

While newspaper articles attributed the location of St. Malo as in or near Oceanside, some attempted to place the community nearer tonier locales such La Jolla or Delmar. However, in 1950 the City of Oceanside annexed the St. Malo subdivision at the owners’ request, which at the time had grown to 24 homes.

8.

The heyday of St. Malo was from the 1930s and 1960s. Owners included Desaix Myers,

a mining engineer; Dr. John Dunlop, pioneer orthopedic surgeon; Karl G. Von Platen, lumber magnate; Attorney Steve Halsted; Lamar Trotti, writer and film producer; W. John Kenney, Asst. Secretary of Navy; Frank Butler, screenwriter; songwriter Nacio Herb Brown; Hugh Darling, mayor of Beverly Hills; and painter Marge Wilman. Another wealthy “colonist” was Alice Pillsbury Forsman, daughter of the co-founder of the Pillsbury Mills. St. Malo was such a way of life for most, even when they passed away, their obituaries mentioned their affection of their St. Malo “home away from home.”

Other notable residents were film director Jason S. Joy and author Ben Hecht. Joy’s St. Malo home was referred to as “La Garde Joyeuse” and included an outdoor bowling alley and volleyball   31

court. Hecht, whose prolific works include Scarface, purchased his St. Malo home in 1950. While living in Oceanside, he wrote a children’s book about a cat that roamed the streets of Oceanside. He said in an interview that he often wrote from his den overlooking the Pacific Ocean.

Home grown MARK HENRY WORDS: ALICIA STONE  PHOTO: ZACH CORDNER

It was a sunny afternoon when I stopped by Lincoln Middle School to check out the S.T.A.A.R. after school program started by Oceanside native Mark Henry. His vibe is infectious—he’s truly excited about all the students in his program have accomplished. While the kids are in the “Homework Opportunity” portion of their daily schedule, we stepped outside and he explained what prompted him to return to hometown and give back to his community. “I want to show these kids what they can do by giving them role models that’ll stick around, to show them by action that the world gives you what you are, not what you want,” he said. Mark started S.T.A.A.R. (which stands for Success Through Academics And Role Models) in 2011 and he currently has two programs. The first is a free program (paid through grants and donations) at Lincoln Middle School, which is available after school ends until 6pm, and the second is a fee-based program at Santa Margarita School on Camp Pendleton. The program focuses on enrichment activities such as science, math, nutrition, life skills, photography, team sports, fitness, dramatics, and art that’s project-oriented and applied interactively. Mark didn’t always have such an optimistic attitude towards learning. “I saw firsthand how easily you could get sucked into the negative aspect that exists in all neighborhoods. I went through it all—drugs, fighting, and gangs. I did some time in jail.” After someone very close to Mark was tragically killed due to gang activity, he knew he wanted something different for his life: “I wanted to be a part of something bigger than me, to be a pillar for kids in my town.” Mark credits some of the well-known coaches in our town as being his mentors. “Pat Kimbrel, Coach Abernathy, Ed Campbell, and John Carroll were my mentors growing up. They were really positive adults and I strive to set that same example for students.” S.T.A.A.R. sets itself apart by offering some unique activities such as taking part in a YouTube channel that highlights their cooking club and producing an internet-radio station. The radio station was born out of Mark’s own experience hosting a show in L.A. some years ago. “My thinking is: I do. We do. You do. I show the kids how to do the activity, then we practice together, and then I give them the reigns. It’s about supplying the tools and giving kids a voice and a sense of pride,” he said. What Mark is doing is definitely working. As we talked, he mentioned how some kids who participate come back when they’re older to help out during their free time. THEOSIDER.COM

“It’s about supplying the tools and giving kids a voice and a sense of pride”

Mark believes he hasn’t “worked” in the years since starting S.T.A.A.R.: “I get back so much from these kids—it’s not a job, it’s my dream.” Even after raising three daughters with his wife, he doesn’t mind putting in the extra time and money to make his dream a reality by working long hours and paying out of pocket for equipment and supplies. Mark’s pride in our city seeped into the end of our conversation. “I put 32

blood, sweat, and tears into Oceanside. Oceanside didn’t put blood, sweat, and tears into me. We can make our home how we want it to be. We’ve made progress, but there’s always more we can do!” For more information on the S.T.A.A.R. After School Program, please visit staarafterschoolprogram.com

Life is a crazy wild ride with many twists and turns and Jimmy Romo is definitely one for the books. After a triple bypass sidelined him for a year, he found a new outlet and tapped into his artistic side he never knew he had. Over the next few years, he found himself on a new path and has been enjoying the ride ever since. In 2003, Jimmy suffered a massive heart attack and ten years later, he found out that he would require a triple bypass surgery. After the surgery, his family was told he was fine but he suddenly flatlined and was reopened and brought back to life. The recovery from the surgery took a year and he had just retired from a general contracting career. Being a surfer, he’d often walk along our beaches and started drawing huge pictures in the sand. Crowds would form on the Oceanside pier and would applaud when he was finished. Not being able to surf, Jimmy was thinking of throwing away some used boards, but when he learned how long it took for a surfboard to break down—he decided to try and make things out of them. So he went into his garage and started carving into them and throwing new colors on them. His neighbors would watch and they bought the boards he made. He tried his hand at the local farmers market and sold all of the boards he’d bring down. In September of last year, Jimmy met the love of his at an arts festival in San Diego. Her

name is Laura Wandry, and she’s a Silversmith. Together, they share Jimmy’s vision and compliment each other beautifully with their different styles. They now travel the country together going to different shows selling their surfboards and Laura’s amazing jewelry. They make all their products in their studio on Coast Highway near Wisconsin Street. They have many different patterns and designs, including scenes of our beautiful harbor and many different animals like seagulls and octopuses. “I don’t see a surfboard anymore, now I see a mermaid or an octopus,” said Jimmy. And the world is a better place for it. Do yourself a favor and check him out—you’ll be amazed by both of their awesome creativity. Brother

Blaise Hueke Prince of Peace Abbey’s Beekeeper WORDS: ELIZABETH SCHWARTZE PHOTOS: CHARLIE NEUMAN

Perched atop an Oceanside hillside with unstoppable views to the west and the east, resides a place of peace and tranquility where everyone’s invited to visit. Prince of Peace Abbey is a Catholic Benedictine monastery where 24 monks currently reside. Since 1958, Prince of Peace Abbey embraces every guest with undiscriminating hospitality, following the directive of its namesake, Saint Benedict. The spectacular grounds, chapel, visitor center, and gift shop are free, and open to the public to enjoy and find solace. The Benedictine monks who live at Prince of Peace Abbey spend a good portion of their life in prayer. Along with their spiritual life, each monk has a specific job to perform to keep the grounds functioning seamlessly and beautifully. Whatever’s needed on the premises, the monks work together to make that happen—living a life of service. On a crisp fall day, one of Prince of Peace’s beloved monks, Brother Blaise Hueke, tends to his labor of love—a colony of bees. Brother Blaise is the resident beekeeper. His official job is plumber, but his hobby and passion is tending to his bees. The bees buzz around with a purpose, tending their hive and performing their designated job in the colony—very similar to the abbey where they live. Everyone has a job, including the bees, living a life of service. Brother Blaise has been the resident beekeeper for 45 years. He’s made a name for himself in the community and was often called to deal with pesky bee problems. For 30 years, his THEOSIDER.COM

bees produced 100 gallons of honey each week. Approximately ten years ago, his bee population died. His educated guess is the cell phone towers that were installed on the hill killed off the bees. At the time, there was no conclusive data to prove cell phone activity affected bee colonies, but recently, researchers from schools like UC Davis have been studying the topic. To resolve the problem, Brother Blaise walked around his property to find an area with little to no cell service, then he moved his beekeeping operation to that location, and his bees were once again producing. Around 50 years ago, Brother Blaise was sent to Rome, Italy to study. While there, he lived with beekeepers. Shortly after his return from Italy, he was contacted by an elderly man that wanted to get rid of his beekeeping operation— and that was the beginning of the bees at Prince of Peace Abbey. When there was a surplus of honey, they put it in the gift shop, where it became a sought-after item. For many years, he taught Beeology to children on Camp Pendleton. He gladly mentors anyone interested in beekeeping, including many Boy Scouts over the decades that learned beekeeping to acquire THEOSIDER.COM

"Quietly doing his life's work, Brother Blaise created a legacy with his bees and his kindness that will be revered for generations" badges. Brother Blaise draws many parallels between bees and God’s love that he contentedly shares. Brother Blaise is now 80 years-old. He still tends to his bees almost every day, but is passing his knowledge to a younger monk, Brother Peter. He prays and goes to mass everyday and continues to do his jobs at the abbey. Brother Blaise was diagnosed with lymphoma at Christmas 2017. For one year, he has opted for no traditional cancer treatment. Brother Blaise has piercing blue eyes, and in those eyes there’s peace. “If you’ve met Brother Blaise, you’ll find your life has changed. I have no question about it,” said Joanne Bruning, Gift Shop Manager. She believes that Brother Blaise and Prince of Peace Abbey are one of each other— both shrouded in peace. Joanne has worked with Brother Blaise for almost twenty years. She teared up when speaking about her adoration for him. “I don’t know how we’ll all survive without him. He’s always there to help and listen.” As the new year begins, the bees at Prince of Peace Abbey continue to do their life’s work. The same goes for the monks at Prince of Peace Abbey. Its perch on a hillside with astounding views remains a place of peace for all who visit. Quietly doing his life’s work, Brother Blaise created a legacy with his bees and his kindness that will be revered for generations.   41

WAVES OF IMPACT

WORDS: PROMISE YEE  PHOTOS: PHOTOS: ZACH CORDNER & RENORDO BOWEN

Instructors Mike Bennett and his son Bryce teach a young visually impaired girl how to surf.

At first glance, the group gathered on the shore seems to be a typical bunch of kids enjoying surf lessons. Upon closer inspection, you’ll notice that this special group of boys and girls taking to the ocean has physical and mental challenges ranging from cerebral palsy, spina bifida, and blindness. Trained volunteers from the Waves of Impact nonprofit group are assisting them in catching their first wave. Group co-founder Keith Lovgren describes students as “just kids.” “They don’t want to be treated differently,” Lovgren said. “They just want to ride waves and have a good time.” While students express all the joy and enthusiasm of any group of kids, adaptations are made to surf instruction. One-on-one lessons are carefully scheduled to keep the day’s rotating group of students small. Music is avoided to minimize sensory overload. Instructors connect with nonverbal students through high-fives and other positive reinforcement. After the surf lesson, students are awarded a medal of completion and have their picture taken with instructors. For some kids, it’s the first time they have gained recognition in a sport. “It’s really special,” said Lovgren. “They have a lot more confidence trying new things.” The benefis of learning to surf are many. The calming ocean water allows kids who are otherwise distracted by sensory overload to focus all their attention to the task at hand. THEOSIDER.COM

“They don’t want to be treated differently. They just want to ride waves and have a good time” OHS student and surf instructor Jeremy Lovgren.

Kids gain confidence from learning a new skill, which carries over to other tasks. Lessons also create a sense of community for kids and families who participate. Students’ siblings are invited to learn to surf as well. Parents can enjoy a family day at the beach, and find comradery and support in each other. Relationships often continue between families, and volunteer instructors. Wetsuits, surfboards, stand-up paddleboards, and lunch for participants are provided by Waves of Impact—all free of charge. Lovgren and co-founder Josh Harper began the nonprofit after volunteering for a similar group. Lovgren said they started Waves of Impact to create a 100-percent volunteer nonprofit that focuses on kids. Private donations support lessons, which costs about $50 to $80 a child. The group has over 150 active volunteers who help with instruction and beach operations. Volunteers have a lot of fun, and look forward to the next opportunity to help. “You can do little things that have a big impact,” said Lovgren. Annual lessons for kids and military veterans with physical and mental challenges are taught in Oceanside and Camp Pendleton. The nonprofit group also holds surf camps in Texas and New Jersey. Out-of-state volunteer teams are trained to independently hold the surf lessons, while Lovgren and Harper take care of permits, insurance, and registration from California. OCEANSIDE BIRDING101 HOTSPOTS FOR A HELPFUL HOBBY WORDS: ELIZABETH SCHWARTZE  PHOTOS: ZACH CORDNER

Birds are everywhere! The birds we see, or don’t see, for that matter, are telling a story. “Birders” are individuals who love to observe birds. “Birding” is a captivating hobby that appeals to diverse populations from young to old. It’s a hobby that costs very little to start and stay involved in. Good news: Oceanside is the perfect place to be a birder! Oceanside is home to a wide variety of of bird species that are attracted to its saltwater, freshwater, and brackish water locations. Even more good news: Oceanside is home to a welcoming and enthusiastic group of birders who love to share their knowledge about Oceanside’s birds.

A quick stop to Buena Vista Audubon Nature Center (located adjacent to the Buena Vista Lagoon) provides any individual interested in birding—there’s an abundance of resources to get started. The staff and volunteers who run the Nature Center are all adept in birding knowledge. The Nature Center is a beautiful, two-story building that was recently remodeled and offers panoramic views of the ocean and the Buena Vista Lagoon. The public is welcome to stop in to enjoy the interpretive displays, kid-friendly educational center, catch a tour, or take part in

one of 50 guided bird walks offered each year. The Nature Center will loan binoculars and a field guide—the two things needed to start birding! The revamped Birding 101 is a guided walk for newbie birders, and a great introduction to birding. Birding 101 is offered each month, and begins at the Nature Center where birders walk to different locations along Coast Highway. Along with Birding 101, the Nature Center hosts an active bird walk calendar, including Whelan Lake, San Dieguito Lagoon River Park, Steve Brad’s Second Thursday Surprise Walk, Second   47

Sunday Bird Walk, Birding 101, and Leo Carillo Bird Walk. There are seasonal bird walks depending on migration, and birding trips to countries like Cuba. The walks are led by both advanced birders, and many well-respected ornithologists. The walks are always free, informative and fun—birders get excited to share the birds they spotted, and interestingly, so many people see different birds on the same walk. Birding is not only a hobby, it’s a necessary and useful tool to help understand bird populations. The recently conducted Christmas Bird Count sponsored by the National Audubon Society is an annual tool (done around Christmas) used to better comprehend San Diego County’s prolific bird populations, along with bird populations throughout Northern America. The public is welcome to participate in the count because every birder observes something different, so even novice birders can catch a glimpse of a bird that needs to be counted. The count is part of “citizen science” that depends on observers to collect data that allows researchers, biologists, and wildlife agencies to decipher bird populations. Oceanside is one of 2,500 Christmas Bird Counts done worldwide. THEOSIDER.COM

7 OCEANSIDE BIRDING HOTSPOTS The birding hotspots in Oceanside are an excellent starting point to observe many of the 400 species that live here year round, or are part of seasonal migration. The most common birds a beginning birder will observe are grebes, loons, gulls, herons, egrets, cormorants, warblers, flycatchers, bluebirds, raptors, pelicans, and ducks. Sea birds like the brown pelican are a fairly common sight, especially at the Pier, but the elusive white pelican is a real treasure to observe. Oceanside is even home to endangered species like the snowy plover that has protected breeding grounds. To start birding, Susan Martin, Birding 101 guide, and advanced birder likes to play, “What bird am I?” She explained that it’s a never-ending game because there are birds everywhere—all the time! Begin by observing birds in the backyard, even try planting native plants, get a pair of binoculars, pick up dependable guides like Sibley Birds West and Peterson Field Guide to Birds of North America and start identifying the local birds. Then stop by the Buena Vista Audubon Nature Center for one of their many bird walks to revel with fellow birders about the spectacular birds in Oceanside.

LAST CHANCE AT LIFE THRIFT STORE

WORDS: ALICIA STONE PHOTOS: PRISCILLA IEZZI

The Last Chance at Life All Breed Rescue & Adoptions originally started out in the early 2000s with veterinary hospital administrator Lisa Hamilton personally taking in pets that had been surrendered for medical reasons. The founder’s love for those unwanted animals turned into a small rescue (Boxers and exotic birds), which then grew into a larger non-profit business. LCAL thrift store is a retail fundraiser that supports the rescue in housing over 50 animals at any given time, including arranging foster placement, obtaining medical attention, and coordinating volunteers that care for, feed, and walk the canines three-tofour times per day, 365 days a year. Opened in 2012, the thrift store is a labor of love for the volunteers and employees who artfully arrange the items that have been donated to make them fun to peruse and easy to find. The great part about shopping at the store is that your money is helping save animals that would be otherwise euthanized. The store allows Oceanside residents who aren’t able to adopt a pet, a way to contribute. The shop offers everything from furniture, electronics, and sports equipment to kitchen-wares, clothing, and jewelry with donations coming in from as far as Orange County. They also have a great vintage THEOSIDER.COM

corner that showcases antiques and rare finds! LCAL focuses on medical and behavioral needs for animals of all ages. The rescue prides itself on saving the canines and birds that are over-looked, “the broken, the older, and the notso-popular.” They fix them up and find them homes. Sometimes it can be as simple as finding space for an animal that’s at another overcrowded North County facility. LCAL holds bi-monthly adoption fairs at local Petco stores and attends Oceanside events such as Harbor Days. You can tell by the light and friendly atmosphere that the shop isn’t simply a means to an end. Everyone you’ll come in contact with believes in what the rescue is accomplishing. Their website displays photos and bios of the animals available for adoption, along with fees and applications. They also place items on eBay and Craigslist so customers can shop from home. Yet another way to donate is by using Amazonsmile, which allocates a percentage of your everyday purchases to the rescue. With all the ways you can get involved with this cause, LCAL makes it easy for animal lovers to do their part and The Osider encourages everyone to stop in and check out this generous local charity! 52

SUBIE SHOP AUTOMOTIVE REPAIR WORDS: JAMEY STONE PHOTOS: CHRISTOPHER DONEZ

Anyone who has ever purchased a used car knows first hand what a challenge it can be. Nobody wants to end up with a lemon. So when I started my quest to buy a used Subaru, I knew that I’d need a second set of eyes. That’s when The Subie Shop came into play. I had heard from a friend that they offer 100-point inspections for a fair price. Believe me when I tell you getting the inspection was well worth the effort and saved me from getting taken advantage of. The staff at the Subie Shop was very accommodating and that’s just the way owner Jose Felix likes it. After many years of being a certified Subaru mechanic at the dealership, Jose wanted to provide the same top level service, but with small business attention to detail to his patrons, he opened the Subie Shop six years ago. THEOSIDER.COM

The Subie Shop specializes in full maintenance, inspections, light performance, and lift work. Jose has always had passion for working on cars and takes great pride in delivering the best service available. He also knows that his success would not be possible without his topnotch staff and family support. So much so that I eventually did purchase my Subaru—there was no inspection needed this time, though, because I bought it directly from Jose himself. The car runs great, the lift is amazing, and I know that next time I need any work done—the Subie Shop will be there, ready to keep me rolling. So if you have a Subaru that needs some love, look no further—just go see Jose at the Subie Shop and let him know that The Osider sent you his way. 54

DIJA MARA

WORDS: JAMEY STONE  PHOTOS: ZACH CORDNER Where have you been? That’s the translation for the name of one of our new restaurants here in Oceanside, Dija Mara. In a sea of gastro pubs popping up over the last few years, it’s nice to see something different added to our mix. Dija Mara focuses on Indonesian fare. Owners Simran Soin and Rob Jones met in Singapore and traveled the world together where they spent a lot of time in Bali. They instantly fell in love with the cuisine there. The two avid travelers set out to bring the cuisine to California and quickly discovered Oceanside. They loved the laidback surf vibe and growing food scene so much, it became their home. Shortly afterward, they signed the lease on the former Bessie’s café building. It was the perfect space, not too big and located right downtown. The restaurant’s new look is adorned with Balinese artwork, teak tables, and a slight nod to the graffiti scene. Rob was a former street art curator in Singapore. Enter Chef Ryan Costanza—a native to upstate New York. Ryan’s been working in THEOSIDER.COM

the kitchen since in his teens. He’s worked in many high profile establishments, including a couple of Michelin star accredited restaurants. His food focus is on local ingredients with the eastern flavors of Indonesia. Think lamb, chicken, tofu, and beef skewers cooked over Binchotan charcoal, Nasi goreng (fried rice), Koji marinated pork ribs, and charred eggplant. Indo food is rich with flavors such as coconut, turmeric, sambal, and tamarind. Whether you’re a vegetarian or carnivore the menu will have multiple options for your liking. Simran also has an extensive background in mixology and offers cocktails with hand mixed syrups and infused rice alcohol cocktails. Also on offer is a very eclectic pairing of natural wines. The service is great and all of the servers will make sure you get a true taste of Indonesia with the perfect drink to bring it all together. No time for a vacation? Just head down to Dija Mara and enjoy the flavors of Bali right here in the O. 58

POLLOS MARIA Growing up in the Oceanside/Carlsbad area, I’ve watched many things change. However, for as long as I can remember, Pollos María has remained a staple in the diets of locals seeking out homestyle Mexican food. Sisters Carmen Gastelum and Marie Davies opened the original Pollos Maria 32 years ago, and it still exists in the same Carlsbad location— which was actually the house the family used to live in. Twelve years ago, in the desire to embrace demand for a second location (and to cater to the growing food community), Pollos María opened up a second restaurant. Located in Oceanside, they joined what was then a new development surrounded by shops and a mini food court in the Lowes Shopping Center off of Old Grove Road. Pollos María is authentic, home cooked, family style Mexican food. Much of their produce is locally sourced, recipes are generations old, decor and wall murals are family designed and painted, and if the staff wasn’t blood related when they started here—they’re now considered family. Some of the employees have been working here for over fifteen years. Preserving tradition and creating a restaurant that feels like home is what this family prides themselves on. “I love my job,” said Janis ???, daughter of original owner and THEOSIDER.COM

WORDS: KATIE LALICATA PHOTOS: PRISCILLA IEZZI current GM of the Pollos María restaurants. There’s a wide range of options to choose from on the menu. So what’s popular here you ask? The winner is the chicken (menu item #6), the Family Meal. This feast includes chicken for the whole tribe, mounds of rice, beans, a stack of tortillas, and a buffet of freshly prepared condiments and salsas to accompany your meal. Although, the different restaurants have different favorites, here in Oceanside, the enchiladas take a close second and are followed by the 500-plus chicken burritos that they sell every month. It’s traditional flame-grilled chicken galore! However, for the non-conventional, “progressive,” younger generation of “foodies,” Pollos Maria has also found themselves keeping up with the times by selling many California Burritos. “All the kids are into the California Burrito, which is kind of cool. “A lot of kids come in after they surf and eat that,” said Janice. So, whether you’re craving chicken, a burrito, homemade chile relleno, or maybe even a spicy, delicious meechalada, Pollos Maria has flavors and styles to satisfy everyone. Even vegetarians can get in on the stoke knowing that the beans are prepared lard-free.

JooHan is the face of Sushi4Reel, while Matt handles the “back end” duties and is also the artist who created the amazing animestyle cartoon characters that adorn the walls, Sushi4Reel merchandise, and menus. “JooHan focuses on aesthetics—he really wanted this place to be a “hole in the wall” and not just be visually appealing. He also wanted to bring fresh fish to the scene because a lot of places nearby use a lot of frozen fish,” explained Matt. “We focus on being fresh—our Sous Chef Santana filets our fish every morning. That’s the meaning behind the name ‘Sushi4Reel.’ We use real fish from the reels of locally sourced fisherman so it’s never frozen. Chef Santana has eighteen year’s experience and is the creative mind behind all our awesome flavor combinations.” Get things started with their ample list of appetizers that includes Bulgogi, Garlic Edamame, Fresh Oyster Shooters, Veggie & Shrimp Tempura, Salmon & Hamachi Kama, Agedashi Tofu, and much more. Their Salad varieties include Seaweed Salad, Green Salad, Fresh Poke Salad, Sunomono Salad, and the list goes on. THEOSIDER.COM

Popular specialty rolls include the Super Homeless (fresh Yellowtail, Spicy Tuna, crab, avocado, spicy mayo, Santana sauce), Caterpillar (Fresh Water Eel on a California Roll) and the Ninja (Deep fried Spicy Tuna, seaweed, eel sauce, Sriracha, green onions) among others. The Nigiri Sushi is divine with offerings like Fresh Amberjack, Fresh Salmon, Fresh Halibut, Uni (sea urchin), Octopus, and Snow Crab, to name a few. Don’t forget to ask to see the secret menu— take a gander and order your favorite. Secret menu rolls include the Jungle Fever Roll (soft shell crab, tuna, Amberjack, Jalapeno mix, mayo, and Jungle Sauce), the Moneyshot (Snow Crab, Shrimp Tempura, Fresh Tuna, Spicy Garlic Butter), and the U Mad B? (Jalapeno Poppers, Shrimp Tempura, Lobster tail, spicy garlic butter) are just a few of the many amazing “secret” rolls served at Sushi4Reel. The secret menu is so creative and delicious that it can only be a creation of a true sushi lover. For dessert, the Tempura Fried Ice Cream is mouth-wateringly delicious and the Mochis (Chocolate, Strawberry, Green Tea, or Mango Japanese Rice Cakes) are to die for. Beer, wine, and sake is available with their Strawberry Nigori being our “go to” this visit. If you’re in the mood for some excellent local sushi, it’d be a good idea to try out Sushi4Reel. Its quaintness is alluring and the customer service is on point and will leave you coming back for more. 62

The Jungle Fever Roll is one of many amazing sushi creations featured on thier "secret" menu.
