SET IN STONE A WORD FROM THE PUBLISHER

Kevin Comiskey, great man, pizza master, and community leader.

Oceanside has always been a melting pot of people from all over the country. It seems that everyone ends up coming here for the great weather and a chance at building a new future in the best city in San Diego. Over the years, I’ve had the pleasure of meeting such people, and every time I hear their stories, it makes me understand why our city is so unique and eclectic. It really makes me proud to be part of our great community. Which brings me to the first time I met Kevin Comiskey. He and his brother Dennis opened up Brooklyn Boyz pizza here in Oceanside back in 2009. I walked in the door to the smell and sight of NYC right in my own neighborhood. Fresh slices under the glass counter, baseball memorabilia hanging on the walls, and Kevin and his brother Dennis working behind the counter. Dennis was making the pies and Kevin was at the register THEOSIDER.COM

with a huge smile and thick NYC accent ready to serve my slice. Over the years, Kevin told me some great stories about growing up in Brooklyn, his beloved horse racing, and especially baseball—so much so, that he was always supporting the local little league teams. Rumor has it that if you hit a home run; he’d tell you to come in and grab a slice on him. What a guy, right? Kevin recently passed away and he is truly missed. It’s with great pleasure that we dedicate our pizza issue to a great man, pizza master, and community leader. This one’s for Kevin.

Oceanside’s

SAUL WATSON WORDS: ALONDRA FIGUEROA  PHOTO: ZACH CORDNER

The Watson family first arrived in Oceanside three generations ago, and collectively they’ve been educating the children of our amazing little town ever since. Which is why it was my absolute pleasure to interview fellow longtime Oceanside Unified School District employee and current Cesar Chavez Middle School Assistant Principal, Saul Watson. Saul grew up cruising the streets of South Oceanside with his parents Tom and Lana, also OUSD educators, along with his three sisters— twins Dustin and Shelby and older sister, Tobi, also a teacher at South O elementary—having all kinds of fun while attending South O, Lincoln Middle, and then proudly graduating from Oceanside High. He seems to abide by the standard rule of “once a Pirate … always a Pirate.” For those of us who’ve worked at OHS, or attended—we always bleed green. That said, there’s another old saying that originates in Pirate lore that Saul and his lovely wife Kyra have made “the only life that matters” their motto since meeting. To them, it means to live life to the fullest together, to do what you love with whom you love, and essentially, to always work hard and play harder!

For Watson, working hard has always been about building up his local community, and that’s consistently been Saul’s passion since he can remember. His love of community service truly began when Saul served for years as a lifeguard at the Marshall Street pool, and at several of our

“Saul represents all that Oceanside is made of— remarkable, laidback people who care about their community and can always be trusted to take care of business” gorgeous beaches. In reality, Saul has been teaching, training, and rescuing Oceanside residents practically his entire life! His version of playing hard is maintaining that active lifestyle to this day as he and Kyra love snowboarding, scuba diving, and traveling—you name they’ve done it!

I think it’s this fun, outgoing, up-for-the-challenge attitude that makes him the all-around amazingyet-humble guy that he is. I first met Saul at Oceanside High as my viceprincipal, and it was immediately obvious that he was not your typical administrator. Saul was surprisingly laid back and actually listened to your concerns rather than merely pushing an agenda. Yes, he was instantly charming and easy-on-theeyes, but beyond the standard political administrator act that most put on, Saul was different and it took me aback. He’s completely human, and most importantly—he’s about the kids. The “good” kids, the “bad” kids, and everything in between—just like me and just as it should be. As a counselor at OHS, it was refreshing to collaborate with an administrator that had so much heart and yet could still command the respect of both students and colleagues. Watson continues to help all those around him shine, and it’s no surprise that he was chosen as this issue’s Oceanside’s Finest. Saul represents all that Oceanside is made of—remarkable, laidback people who care about their community and can always be trusted to take care of business.

CHEMISTRY SURFBOARDS WORDS: JAMEY STONE  PHOTOS: ZACH CORDNER

Many people may not know that the Oceanside Industrial Park located here in the valley of Oceanside produces over 60-percent of the surfboards sold in the United States annually. Traditionally, it’s a “closed-door” manufacturing hub, but in the valley is where you’ll find the open doors of the Chemistry Surfboards factory and showroom. Business partners Jason Bennett and Will Smith are lifelong surfers that set out to create a space where surfers can come in and get face time with their surfboard shaper, look over all the different models available, and get educated on what your options are. This allows Chemistry to tune you into a board that really fits your surfing level. Being able to see where and how your boards are made from start-to-finish is something THEOSIDER.COM

that the average surf shop can’t provide, but it’s a vital step in becoming a better surfer. The concept was established in 2008, and has become a great resource for local and traveling surfers alike. Jason and Will would like to thank the Zoo crew (their glassing and finish team) for putting out the highest-level boards made and the attention to detail they hold themselves to. The showroom also sells all the accessories needed to get you out in the water. Whether it’s a new leash, traction pad, fins, and of course, the latest Chemistry gear—the boys have you covered. So if you’re looking for a new shred stick and some great insight on what can take your surfing to the next level, I highly recommend checking out this hidden gem. 22

COMMUNITY

IVEY RANCH PARK ASSOCIATION WORDS: PROMISE YEE  PHOTOS: RENORDO BOWEN

The Ivey Ranch Park Association is internationally known for its therapeutic horse instructor training program and therapy riding sessions, yet the nonprofit began as a small group of parents who wanted to do something better for their special needs kids. Tonya Danielly, executive director of Ivey Ranch Park Association, said when the ranch first offered daycare services for kids with special needs in 1981, other options were limited. “Children with special needs could stay at home with a parent, or families could institutionalize their child,” said Danielly. “It gave California twoparent working families another option.” The first daycare class had six students. Soon recreational outings and in-home respite care were also offered. A parent outreach group was formed in the mid-1990s to educate families about services. A fundraising group was also formed to keep operations running. Ivey Ranch got its first horse in 2003, which it used in its recreational program. Today, the ranch has 22 horses that serve 140 able-bodied and challenged riders a week. Those who benefit from therapeutic riding include children with mental, physical, developmental, and behavioral challenges, as well as adults with PTSD, eating disorders, and Alzheimer’s disease. The twelve-acre ranch expanded in 2008, and leased four additional adjacent acres from the city to accommodate its expanding equestrian program. Despite the financial crisis of 2009, expansion continued on schedule. Tough financial times worked to the ranch’s benefit as contractors worked for lower fees, and building materials that weren’t moving were sold for less. In all, the planned $3 million-dollar barn expansion ended up costing $1 milliondollars to complete. Ivey Ranch hit another milestone in 2012, when it was accredited by PATH (Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship) and CHA (Certified Horsemanship Association) for training therapeutic horse instructors. It is the only duelly accredited facility in the state, and draws students from around the world. Each year, 100 instructors are trained through the program. Ivey Ranch is a place where the entire community comes together—the special needs population, able-bodied individuals, veterans, seniors, and animal lovers. The focus is on service—not on a person’s handicap or special need. The horses provide a bridge between people’s differences, and help create an easygoing THEOSIDER.COM

environment where things flow naturally. The ranch employs 30 people, including four full time staff. Ivey Ranch’s programs are supported by numerous volunteers like the Grooming Gang that cleans stalls and turnout, groom, and give TLC to horses two days a week. Additional volunteers help walk horses and spot students during therapy riding sessions. Mornings on the ranch still begin with the “before school” program at the ranch house. Kids in the program enjoy breakfast and board 24

games before their school bus arrives. Outside instructors exercise and ride horses. Afternoons are bustling with activity. Horse therapy sessions are held, volunteers are on site to help out, and riding lessons are given. “It goes from a quiet sunrise to kids everywhere,” said Danielly. “It’s an anthill of activity with grooming, feeding, cleaning. The animals and everybody loves it.” It costs over a million dollars a year in cash and in-kind donations to keep the programs running. It’s a credit to our fine community that   25

operations continue and expand. We’re fortunate to have such a wonderful program like this in Oceanside. For more info on how to volunteer, please visit iveyranch.com

THINGS YOU DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT

OCEANSIDE BEAUTY CONTESTS WORDS: KRISTI HAWTHORNE PHOTOS COURTESY OF OCEANSIDE HISTORICAL SOCIETY

Today, beauty contests are on the decline— they seem out of step with the current political climate for a variety of reasons. However, early local and regional beauty contests were seen as a way to promote an event or even a city, bringing contestants and spectators who might not otherwise visit. Oceanside had the perfect venue for such an event—the Pier Bandshell and stadium. There was nothing like it in Southern California—the Pacific Ocean providing the perfect backdrop. Beauty contestants on the runway at the Pier Bandshell, circa 1950s.

1967

1.

Beauty contests began in Oceanside as early as the 1920s. Crowds gathered to watch the beauties walk the runway at the Oceanside bandshell. Later, the Southern California Beauty Contest officially began in 1934 and was held in Oceanside until 1973.

Bathing Beauties in front of the Beach Hotel on North Pacific Street, 1946.

6.

In 1935, RKO Pictures selected three stars to judge Oceanside’s beauty contest: Buddy Rogers, Preston Foster, and none other than Betty Grable, who would later become one of the most recognized stars and WWII pin-up girls. First prize was boosted to $150.00.

2.

Contestants were sponsored by local merchants or civic organizations and came from all over Southern California. The first prize back in the early days was a cash award of $25.00.

7.

In 1947, the local newspaper reported about the upcoming pageant: “Girls parading across the flower decked ramp will be judged not only on their beauty, but for poise and personality by the movie star makers. The girls selected as possible movie material will not necessarily be contestwinners, and it is understood that the judges’ decisions will have no bearing on selections made for screen tests. Each scout will be acting independently of the other.”

3.

Girls vying for the title would line up on the loading dock of the Oceanside Train Depot for a photo shoot wearing their sponsor sashes. Later, the photo shoot was staged in front of the Beach Hotel (a.k.a. Colonial Inn) on Pacific Street.

4.

In preparation for the contest, the Oceanside bandshell was decorated with palm fronds and flowers, particularly gladiolas that were grown here locally. A runway was built from the stage, which was covered in beautiful flowers as well.

8.

In 1949, a record crowd of 25,000 attended the contest, cramming the amphitheater, Pier, and Pacific Street. First place went to Jeannette Zahniser of Oceanside. Judges included actor Bill Williams, star of the television series Kit Carson, and Maurice Golden, MGM Studios talent scout.

5.

Beauty contests were so popular that the people attending the event nearly tripled the population of Oceanside. In 1934, it was estimated that 10,000 people attended while Oceanside’s population was just over 3,500 people.

THEOSIDER.COM

30

9.

In 1956, a crowd estimated at 15,000 attended Oceanside’s annual beauty parade, which was part of six-day Beach and Community Fair. Thirty-four beauties walked the runway. The winner was Colleen Cummings of Huntington Park. Raquel Tejada came in second place. This lovely dark haired beauty would later be better known as movie star Raquel Welch! She went on to win the “Fairest of the Fair” at Delmar.

10.

The Oceanside Chamber of Commerce, which had sponsored the event for years, voted in 1974 to discontinue the Beauty Contest due to declining interest. There are still many local residents who fondly remember the heyday of the pageant and even former contestants love sharing stories about their experience. Here at The Osider, we love to discover the incredible accomplishments of our residents. So when we heard that PETA’s (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) “Sexiest Vegan Over 50” was Erin Carrasco—Owner/ director of Dance Unlimited Performing Arts Academy—we thought it was a great idea to sit down with her and share her experience with our readers.

Live Music, Wine, Cheese & Art 216 N. Coast Highway Downtown Oceanside www.HolmeEstateCellars.com Ph: (442) 264-7055

So, Erin—tell us about your early years in Oceanside, and how you came to start Dance Unlimited. My family moved here when I was five, when my father (a local contractor) built our family home six blocks from the ocean. I grew up on the beach, and spent almost every weekend on the ocean with my dad where he taught me to water ski. After Oceanside High, I finished my education at SDSU. During college, I taught dance classes through the Carlsbad Boys and Girls Club. When that program was shut down, I saw the opportunity to start my own business doing something I loved. We opened Dance Unlimited in 1989, and we were Oceanside’s first professional dance studio. After expanding five times, we’re currently at home on the upper floor of Oceanside Marketplace. I’m proud to say that everyone at Dance Unlimited is like a big extended family. We understand you’re a cancer survivor, how has that journey affected you? In May, I will be six years cancer-free. Unfortunately in 2012, I was diagnosed with Adrenal Cortical Carcinoma—a very rare and deadly form of cancer. I underwent surgery and two years of chemotherapy. Because of the treatment, I was very sick and couldn’t do much but read. My husband Allen bought me a Kindle and I read many books extolling the health benefits of a plant-based diet and how it can not only help, but reverse cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and obesity. I had been a vegetarian for 25 years, but after learning about slaughterhouses and factory farming I chose to give up all animal products. It was the best decision I’ve ever made! My body changed, my THEOSIDER.COM

THE “ROLLER”

energy soared, and my blood work improved! My oncologist was amazed to tell me not only would I not have to take a steroid for the rest of my life, and that I no longer needed any medication at all. After going vegan, my thyroid had regulated itself! How did you get involved with PETA and come to be named “Sexiest Vegan Over 50”? I became aware of PETA when I was nineteen while participating in “FUR FREE” events, and protesting animal experimentation labs at UCSD. In 2014, I became involved in local animal advocacy, and after protesting city to city—I helped get ordinances passed in seven North 32

County cities banning the sale of puppies from “puppy mills,” as well as the bill AB 485 that passed for all of California. My husband secretly entered me into the contest, and it’s been an absolute honor to represent PETA! I’ll be writing a blog about my dog rescue work in Tijuana, and sharing my weekly vegan- cooking segment #LunchBreakLive on the PETA Prime Facebook Page. I’ve been given a second chance at life, which many people don’t get. Now I’m older, wiser, and more passionate than ever to make my mark, and hopefully, impact other people’s lives. ARTS

THE NORMAL GIRL COLLECTIVE

“Being yourself should be normal,” said Alofa Gould, a 23-year old artist and local community organizer. In a social-political climate where unattainable beauty standards, mass deportations, school shootings, nuclear escalation via Twitter, and widespread fear/paranoia have become normalized—it’s a refreshing and important stance. Gould and her friends recently started the Normal Girl Collective to help empower each other to make art, kick ass, and spread the message of “self-love” to other women, girls, and non-gender conforming folks. Born out of Gould’s living room here in Oceanside, the arts collective consists of three other young women at the moment—Grace Gray (25), Isabel Pichardo (22), and Norma Beaz (30), but is poised to become a serious force in the local art scene. “We kind of all picked up different kinds of art practices with each other as a way to vent and hang out, but it wasn’t anything super serious at first. And then we decided that it could go somewhere because it was just healthy to do for our own mental reasons,” said Gould. THEOSIDER.COM

WORDS: RACHEL MICHELLE FERNANDES

Gould, who is of Samoan heritage, hails from Virginia, but moved out to Vista when she was only seventeen. She and her mom fled an abusive household and, at one point, weren’t even sure they were going to make it out alive. For her, art has been a life force. For the other girls, making art together has been extremely healing and has provided an awakening. Both Baez and Pichardo are Chicana and were raised with brothers who were encouraged to pursue artistic endeavors. They were reluctant to call themselves “artists” until joining forces in Gould’s apartment, which also serves as a popup gallery space for a bi-monthly art project called “Unit F.” Named after the SZA song of the same name, The Normal Girl collective became officially actualized when they occupied a booth at the Vista Alley Art Festival. Equipped with a “selfie” mirror, the booth drew in a steady crowd of teenage girls who enthusiastically responded to the name and the message. “They were able to relate to us despite the age difference. I’m not normal. And they for sure 34

don’t feel normal,” said Norma. “But just the name brought them out and they were like, ‘Yeah, we’re digging this and we’re going to buy a T-shirt because we know what it is not to be that normal girl.’” Next up, The Normal Girls are collaborating with The Hill Street Country Club and Linksoul Lab to host a series of events open to teens as well as women/non binaries of all ages. “Oceanside is so dope because everyone who’s an artist in this area is so willing to jump in and help each other. And I think it’s because everyone’s just so ready for a change or some sense of community,” elated Gould. “It’s not about being competitive—it’s about actually helping people through a process that can be their outlet.” For more info on the Normal Girls Collective, please visit thehillstreetcountryclub.org

Great pizzas ceanside of O

CORDNER ONE  PHOTOS: ZACH WORDS: JAMEY ST

What started as a craving popularized by soldiers returning home from Italy after World War Two, pizza has become one of the most beloved food items in America today. For those that say nothing good comes from war, I beg to differ. I mean, who doesn’t love pizza, right? Luckily for us here in Oceanside, there’s no shortage of great pizza options to choose from. So we decided to bring sixteen of our favorite pies here in Oceanside to the party. We have everything from NY-style thin crust to thick crust Sicilian. Is your mouth watering yet? Mine is, so get your taste buds ready for some truly amazing pizza pies.

The Captian Fin Pizza by Privateer Coal Fire Pizza. True story: This pizza was actually invented by our publisher and author of this article, Jamey Stone. (We're pretty sure that makes him a pizza aficionado, so you know his pizza reviews are legit!)

Helicopter Tours Experience the beauty of Oceanside and beyond from 500 feet above WORDS: AARON SCHMIDT  PHOTOS: ZACH CORDNER

RENORDO BOWEN

Kurt completed his flight training and ended up working for a survey company—he flew a Raven II helicopter all over the country. He eventually moved from Ocean City to North County in 2015 to look for somewhere to open up a flying operation of his own. “I moved to North County because I’ve always wanted to live in the San Diego area for a long time, ” said Kurt. In November of 2016, Kurt and Danielle officially opened for business as “Waverider Helicopter Tours” at Oceanside Municipal Airport. “Oceanside is lot more relaxed as it’s got smaller airplanes without the big jets flying in and out,” explained Kurt. “It’s got a ‘small airport’ feel to it.”

There’s nothing more exhilarating than flying through the air in a helicopter. The thrill of a vertical take off is like no other—time seems to stand still as you slowly ascend and hover over the earth. Waverider Helicopter Tours is a local helicopter tour company based in Oceanside that provides clients with an unforgettable experience of viewing North County San Diego’s beautiful coastline from 500-feet above. Located at the Oceanside Municipal Airport, Waverider Helicopter Tours was founded in November 2016 by owner and chief pilot, Kurt Dawson, and his partner Danielle Mulvey. Originally from Ocean City, Maryland, Kurt had a fascination with aviation at an early age. “When I was a kid, my dad took me to my first airshow and I was hooked,” smiled Kurt. After finishing high school, Kurt went on to serve in the Coast Guard from 2007 to 2010 as a Boat Crew Member. “Once I got out of the Coast Guard, I used the GI Bill to learn how to fly airplanes and helicopters. I started flight training in 2010 and learned how to fly airplanes first. Since then, I’ve flown everything from small planes and jets, to small helicopters and jet helicopters,” said Kurt. “All of Waverider’s helicopter tours fly right along our majestic coastline, and they run all day every day”

Waverider Helicopter Tours has a total of three helicopters in its hangar: A sleek, black Robinson R44 Raven II—the most popular civilian helicopter in the world. It’s the helicopter they use for all their coastal tours. It features four-seats, top-of-the-line Bose noise cancel headsets with Bluetooth, air-conditioning, and leather seats. They also have one other R44 helicopter and a high-end luxury-style H125 AStar helicopter used exclusively for charters. Tours range from eight minutes all the way to 45 minutes, and they’re all pretty amazing, to say the least. The eight-minute tour goes around Oceanside and the 45-minute tour goes all the way down to La Jolla Cove and back through Rancho Santa Fe, Fairbanks Ranch, and Lake Hodges. All of Waverider’s helicopter tours fly right along our majestic coastline, and they run all day every day. They have a sunset tour, twilight tours, night tours, and during Christmas time, they have Christmas light tours—which was a big hit last year.

Waverider also offers limo and sunset tours with Costa Limousine Service.

Waverider has also partnered with Pedego Electric Bikes Carlsbad to offer a scenic twoand-a-half hour guided electric bike tour from Carlsbad to Oceanside that includes a fifteen or 30-minute helicopter flight along the coastline. Such a fun way to explore the coast! They’ve got options for all types of people and budgets. Prices range from $40 per person for the eight-minute tour around Oceanside, and their most expensive tour is $225 per person, which is 45-minutes long and encompasses all areas of interest (see the sidebar for more info on the tours). Waverider also offers aerial services for photography, video, surveying, and real estate, among others. By the time this article is published, Waverider will also be offering helicopter charter tours in collaboration with Big Blue Air Helicopters out of Palm Springs. "The charter expansion will   49

allow us to go further than La Jolla Cove. We'll be offering charter flights to LA, Temecula, Palm Springs, Coachella, Catalina Island, and much more," said Kurt. When asked what’s his favorite thing about working in Oceanside, Kurt simply replied, “Right now, I love the fact that I work close to the Harbor. I can just walk with my surfboard to South Jetty.”

A trip to Oceanside Harbor is always a good choice. It’s a place where locals and visitors can walk, run, bike, play, shop, and dine. For an incomparable view of the harbor and Pacific Ocean, Boat Rentals of America Oceanside provides the opportunity to rent a sea vessel and cruise the water as an unforgettable experience for every age and budget. Located on the dock behind the iconic Harbor lighthouse, the friendly staff can help customers find the perfect sea vessel to make memories. Rentals include the option of powerboats, jetskis, electric boats, kayaks, Stand Up Paddleboards (SUP), pedal boats, and a 23foot sailboat—basically, every option depending on your level of comfort and boating need. Anyone eighteen years or older can rent the vessels, and no experience is needed. The staff will take the time to show customers how to work their rental before leaving the dock. Kayaks and SUPs are the most popular and require the least amount of experience, accounting for half of all rentals. Discounts are provided for groups, military personnel, and their families. Peak season runs from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day weekend. In one year, Boat Rentals of America Oceanside will serve approximately 10,000 locals and tourists. Repeat customers, the Bennett family from Murrieta, California, exited their 50-horsepower powerboat THEOSIDER.COM

and climbed on the dock after an eventful halfday rental. They couldn’t wait to get back the next day with guests. “We’re coming back tomorrow with family and friends from New York. When we were out, we saw a whale jump right in front of us, and three sets of dolphins. It was awesome!” said an elated Mariya Bennett. The family owned and operated business started in Oceanside in 1997 and just celebrated its twentieth Anniversary. The business has grown from four to fifteen boats in that time. For seventeen of the twenty years that Boat Rentals of America has resided on its dock at the Harbor, Arthur Escobar has been onsite to manage and assist. Escobar has been on the Oceanside Tourism Council since its inception, and his unparalleled service has customers and employees returning every year. “No experience is required for our boats, they’re fun, safe, and reliable. I wouldn’t send the boat out if I didn’t trust it was perfect. You’re in good hands,” smiled Arthur. Reservations can be made online, or in person. Customers must present a valid ID and matching credit/debit card. Life jackets are provided for everyone, but only required use for those thirteen and younger. Food, drink, coolers, and fishing off the boats are allowed. Creating lifelong memories at the Harbor is a simple boat reservation away. 52

JULIAN BAKERY WORDS: ELIZABETH SCHWARTZE  PHOTOS: ZACH CORDNER

Tucked away in an Oceanside business park, Julian Bakery has been manufacturing health for the global market in Oceanside for the past six years. The 1,000-square foot retail space located at 624 Garrison Street is a storefront to house the many products made in the adjacent 30,000-square foot manufacturing facility. The Julian Bakery line produces foods that promote “the highest quality Paleo, Vegan, Primal, and Pegan (Paleo and Vegan) food products.” The product line includes the best-selling ProGranola, Paleo Thin Sandwich Bread, and Primal Thin Protein Bars. Julian Bakery’s CEO Heath Squier has been formulating the recipes for years. Their mission is “to help one customer at a time reach their goals through proper nutrition.” Julian Bakery is aptly named because it began in Julian, California in 1990 by nutritionist and visionary Barbara Squier. Squier found success when she created a line of gluten-free and grain-free products at the beginning of the food trend that was recognizing intolerances in THEOSIDER.COM

diets. The company moved to La Jolla in 1993, and with 50-plus employees was “bursting at the seams,” which is “a good problem to have,” according to current CEO and Barbara Squier’s son, Heath Squier. As CEO, Heath Squier moved the production facility to Oceanside in 2012. Julian Bakery purchased the baking equipment and space needed from a baking manufacturer that was going out of business. Currently, Julian Bakery employees approximately 60 employees. Living healthy is Squier’s goal for himself, his employees, and his customers. He has a gym onsite for employee use. The bestselling ProGranola is a soy-free, gluten-free, grain-free, low net carb, delicious granola that conforms to the Paleo and Keto diets. The Paleo diet is relatively well known and consists of foods found before the introduction of modern-day agriculture. It eliminates processed foods and encourages fruits, vegetables, and protein. The Keto diet is gaining momentum and consists of a high fat, high protein, low carbohydrate diet that replaces 54

glucose with ketones in the body. After five years in development, Squier launched the IKDiet in January 2017 that utilizes InstaKetones. Information on this diet can be found at ikdiet.com. “Anyone who’s looking to get results, we have a product for them,” said Squier. He not only runs his business in Oceanside and employs residents; he also enjoys Oceanside, as well. His family’s favorite places in the city are 333 Pacific and the Oceanside Pier area. His future plans include not only expanding the manufacturing facilities, but also expanding on his retail space so that customers can find everything they need to maintain their diet goals and healthy lifestyle.

The transformation happening downtown Oceanside includes the upscaling of long-time restaurants from good to great. As of October 1, 2017, Veneto’s is now under new ownership, and the new owner is a perennial restaurateur with a dedicated following in Italian dining—Pino Bottalico. The long-time Oceanside resident is now sharing his culinary and restaurant talents with his hometown, and bringing Oceanside’s Italian dining scene to the next level. Pino has been in the Italian restaurant business since he was eight years old in Puglia, Italy. After coming to America on a work visa when he was nineteen years old, Pino landed a job at Alfredo’s at the Italian Pavilion in Disney’s Epcot in Orlando, Florida. After working at Epcot for one year, Pino returned to Florence, Italy, and told his boss that he needed to come back to America. Since then, he’s spent his life building his reputation in the restaurant industry with his first-class hospitality and quality food. Pino cultivated his ardent following beginning with his successful restaurant in Encinitas—Pino’s Cucina Italiana. The restaurant operated in Encinitas’ Lumberyard Shopping Center from 1997-2009. After he sold it, he worked at Tuscany in La Costa, and Il Fornaio—all the while maintaining his followers. Pino’s been behindthe-scenes at Veneto’s since May 2017, working THEOSIDER.COM

with the chefs, incorporating his homemade sauce recipes that are made daily, and training the staff. He officially bought the restaurant and took over in October 2017 and is very happy with Veneto’s progress and reception. He loves Oceanside, and now sees its potential for success. Veneto’s specializes in classic Italian dishes from every region. The Linguine Pescatore, Osso Bucco, and Fettuccine Steak Toscana are some of the crowd favorites. “I’ve spent years making the food perfect,” said Pino. The pizza is hand-crafted, delicious, and made-to-order at a reasonable price. The restaurant boasts eighteen beers on tap, and of course, there’s plentiful good wine to complement each dish. There are daily specials, and make sure to save room for classic Italian desserts, such as homemade Tiramisu and Cannoli. Pino is proud of his Lemon Peach Sorbet on shell. Live music is offered on Friday and Saturday nights from 6:30-9:30pm. Stop in and enjoy the ambiance Pino has spent his life creating in the Italian restaurant business. With him in charge, the new ownership at Veneto’s is going nicely by providing Italian food prepared the old-fashioned way with unparalleled service. Said Pino: “Italians love people and they love good food!” 58

O’SIDE BAKERY WORDS: KATIE LALICATA  PHOTOS: DANIELLE JACKSON

Not too many things in life bring about the comfort and happiness of home baked goodies. The guys at O’side Bakery are now bringing you this feeling! Owners Kevin Briens and Stevie Rojano are life-long friends, surfers, and Oceanside locals who have now opened for business. They’re stoked to bring you second generation French pastry recipes and other delicious treats baked with love. In addition to that, they also serve up a super tasty brunch menu served seven days a week. After fourteen years of friendship, plotting, and working in Kevin’s dad’s French Bakery, the guys were finally able to create their dream as they opened the doors to O’side Bakery last October. In just four months, they’ve established themselves by having a steady line of customers coming through the door and their day’s worth of work trying to keep the shelves full! Kevin and Stevie are jazzed on their location, tucked right next to the Oceanside Police Department on the corner of Mission and El Camino Real. It’s a perfect spot to cater to the growing community and offer drool-worthy breakfasts, pastries, and coffee at a price that can’t be beat. What sets them apart from the rest? Well, it’s not everyday you can find authentic, fresh, home baked pastries that taste like you’re in France. When I asked Kevin if he’d ever been to France and how their desserts compared, a coy grin crossed his face as he replied, “It’s pretty THEOSIDER.COM

legit. I’ve had them my whole life and they never get old.” What these guys are doing here is pretty epic. Making all the dough from hand with lots and lots of love. Some of the dough takes three days to go from scratch to completion. Pretty impressive, right? All the berries and produce for their menu are as locally sourced as possible, and the coffee they serve comes right from here as well. Being a community that prides itself on localism, these guys are the real deal and definitely a new business to support. O’side Bakery’s menu covers all the bases. They serve up some flavorful berry crepes stuffed full of sweet cream and berries they purchase from a local farm. If “savory” is more your thing, the Eggs Benedict are bomb. They come with both bacon and avocado, keeping true to Cali roots. Even if you aren’t a big breakfast eater, Stevie said he likes to keep it simple, and out of all the items on their menu his personal favorite is a good old-fashioned chocolate croissant. Whatever your preference, everyone gets to leave here with a happy belly and a smile. They’re open all day, cracking the doors at six am, and not shutting them ’til 7pm. Coffee and pastries are available all day, and brunch ends at 3pm. Although they don’t have beer or wine yet, it’s on the list of things to come. So cruise by to check out what these two are offering, and pick up a pastry—maybe find yourself a new favorite spot to indulge in a little taste of France right here at home! 60

Shrimp Spring Rolls

MR. PHO

WORDS: AARON SCHMIDT PHOTOS: CHRISTOPHER DONEZ Located in the Oceanside Square shopping center on Oceanside Boulevard, Mr. Pho is a small, unassuming family-run authentic Vietnamese restaurant that’s been a staple in this community for many years. Originally from Saigon, Vietnam, owner Hai Do (customers call him “Rolando”) started Mr. Pho over fifteen years ago and hasn’t looked back since. After coming over from Vietnam to America in 1998, Rolando lived in San Diego before moving to Oceanside in 2000 to live and work. Before he opened Mr. Pho, Rolando worked in his family’s restaurant in Vietnam. His parents moved to the USA in 1996, and Rolando would follow them to the States over two years later. Cut to 2002, Rolando saw an opportunity to open his own restaurant here in town, so he followed his lifelong dream and Mr. Pho was born—ready to satisfy an eager crowd hungry for traditional Vietnamese cuisine. In 2016, Rolando launched another Vietnamese restaurant called Chef’s Pho & Grill in San Marcos to an overwhelmingly positive response. “Next year, we plan on opening another restaurant here in Oceanside,” said Rolando. “The city is nice and THEOSIDER.COM

the people here are cool. There is a strong community in Oceanside.” Mr. Pho’s most popular items include their delicious appetizer spring rolls that have a crispy filling set in a classic thin soft shell, and their tasty egg rolls have a savory filling in a thin, crispy shell. Try wrapping an egg roll in a lettuce leaf and then dip it into their two house sauces for maximum taste. It’s a perfect way to start your meal. Mr. Pho’s menu displays a variety of dishes, focusing primarily on Phô and Banh Mi sandwiches. The Phô Ga (chicken soup) broth has outstanding depth of flavor and is immensely popular. “We put a lot of ginger into the chicken broth, so it’s really healthy for you,” smiled Rolando. There’s also the “special dish”—Beef Stew with bread and noodles that includes traditional sprouts, jalapeños, and other garnishes— simply amazing. The #24 Seafood Soup is also a crowd pleaser. With fast and friendly service, Mr. Pho should be everyone’s “go-to” for Phô in North County. It’s that good.
