It’s 2019—can you believe it? We’ve made it through the holidays and now it's time to buckle down and get back into the swing of things. For some, that means a fresh outlook to start the new year. Maybe it’s a strong health regimen, or a renewed focus on work or school. Whatever it may be, we salute you for looking to improve your daily life. We plan to do the same thing here at The Osider. As Oceanside continues to grow, there’re new challenges that we as a community will have to endure— some good and some not so much. As any city matures there’re always growing pains, but that's where lessons are learned in order to move forward. With that said, we promise to put our best foot forward when making each issue of this magazine. The Osider staff is fully committed to this community, and although we can never please everyone, we’ll continue to show Oceanside in it’s best light, support small businesses, and showcase people who love and support our town. Most of all, we’ll keep the true Oceanside spirit front and center as we grow into the best city in San Diego County.

HOW TO MAKE CHURROS WITH EXECUTIVE CHEF DANIEL PUNDIK OF EXHALE RESTAURANT PHOTOS: ZACH CORDNER
“This is a simple recipe that anyone can make at home, and you should already have most of these ingredients on hand. Churros are basically made from choux pastry dough (flour, butter, water, salt, and eggs typically used for éclairs and cream puffs) that’s been deep fried and coated in cinnamon-sugar. Although churros originated in Spain, they’re now a widely inspired dessert and snack in many cultures, and also here at Exhale Restaurant. You can make them any size you’d like. In the kitchen, we make them large because we have such a big fryer. At home, I recommend making them smaller—based on the size pot you’re using. If you don’t have a piping bag, you can use a zip lock bag with the corner cut off. Serve them with dulce de leche, or some Nutella and bananas.”—Chef Daniel THEOSIDER.COM

PREPARATION 1.
Place water, butter, sugar, and salt into a medium saucepan. Bring to a boil.
2.
Add flour and mix vigorously until dough balls up, and everything is well blended. Remove from heat.
3.
Place dough into the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment. Mix on low until steam disappears.
4.
Add egg while the machine is on, turn speed up to medium, and mix until incorporated.
5.
Scoop dough into a piping bag fitted with a star-piping tip. (I used a Wilton 2D tip. Make sure the tip is slightly rounded. It helps prevent churros from splitting.) Combine cinnamon and sugar on a large plate, and set aside.
6.
Heat oil in a large frying pan or stockpot. To test the oil for frying, drop a tiny piece of dough into the oil. Once it browns, you’re ready to pipe the churros in.
INGREDIENTS
7.
1 cup water 1/4 cup (4 tablespoons) butter, unsalted 2 teaspoons granulated sugar 1/8 teaspoon salt 2/3 cup all-purpose flour 1 large egg Oil for frying Cinnamon-Sugar: 1/2 cup granulated sugar 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
Pipe the dough directly into the hot oil to desired length and cut with a fork or scissors. Do not pipe too many churros at once. (So they cook evenly.) Straighten and turn churros with a fork frequently. (Helps prevent splitting.) Cook for about two minutes, or until desired color of brown/doneness. (If they brown too fast, the oil is too hot. If they take a long time to brown, the oil is too cold. Aim for 350-375 degrees Fahrenheit.)
8.
Remove churros and place on a paper towel to absorb excess oil. While still warm, roll the churros in a cinnamon-sugar mixture. Serve with dulce de leche or chocolate sauce, if desired.

DR. ADRIANNE HAKES WORDS: ELIZABETH SCHWARTZE PHOTO: ZACH CORDNER
Dr. Adrianne Hakes’ Oceanside residency started in the 1970s at Oceanside Harbor, while living on a boat with her husband five children and a dog. Her unwavering character in such a dynamic living situation is a sign of her steadfastness. Her resolve has benefitted Oceanside for over 40 years, especially with her passion for Oceanside’s educational foundations, libraries, and inclusion of the LGBTQ community. Dr. Hakes’ most public role was serving on the Oceanside Unified School District Board of Trustees from 2000-2016. Her proudest accomplishment while on the school board was leading a collaborative effort with the North County LGBTQ Resource Center to bring Gender Queer Inclusive Policies to each school, and training for educators on the topic. Championing LGBTQ policies at local schools sent a message that our community is inclusive—everyone belongs and is safe in Oceanside. In 2015, Dr. Hakes received an Ambassador Award for her volunteer work with North County LGBTQ Resource Center. As a career educator, one of Dr. Hakes’ most rewarding jobs in education was being “the job lady,” when she worked as the ROP Career Counselor, and helped numerous students obtain employment. What Dr. Hakes demonstrates as Oceanside’s Finest is her service and volunteerism in multiple
Oceanside organizations, both in and out of the public eye. Dr. Hakes has served on the board of Friends of the Oceanside Public Library for 23 years. Each Thursday, Friends of the Library sell books at the Farmer’s Market. Those book sales help sponsor the various programs and events offered at the Oceanside libraries. Dr. Hakes is also currently the President of the Oceanside Library Board of Trustees and has served on the board for over twenty years. The Library Board of
“Dr. Hakes has spent immeasurable hours fighting for quality education both in and out of the classroom” Trustees sets policies and regulations that advocate on behalf of the community’s library services. Combining her educational background, and role with the libraries, she garnered resources to support military children/families, and the LGBTQ community. With Dr. Hakes as an advocate in the schools and the libraries, those invaluable resources may not have been available. One of her most recently designated roles is serving on the board of the Oceanside Charitable Foundation for the last four years; which encourages charitable giving in our community. She’s also a long-term
member and champion of the Oceanside Museum of Art. Dr. Hakes has spent immeasurable hours fighting for quality education both in and out of the classroom, therefore she embraces her role as a long-term member of American Association of University Women (AAUW) with the Carlsbad/ Oceanside/Vista branch. The AAUW was founded in 1881 to advance equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy, and research. Through AAUW, Dr. Hakes started the Dictionary Project that provided dictionaries to seventh grade, low-income AVID students. She was integral in bringing AAUW’s national program, Tech Trek, to the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). Tech Trek is a week-long camp for seventh grade girls that demonstrate an interest in STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) as a potential career path. Dr. Hakes affectionately calls Oceanside home. Oceanside Harbor is, of course, her favorite, where she recalled that being “live aboards” was like living in a small town where everyone watched out for each other. The five children that once lived on their boat “La Barca” all graduated from El Camino High School. She spent 30 years living in Fire Mountain, and now she lives in downtown Oceanside within walking distance to most of her favorite restaurants.

BEACH HOUSE WINERY WORDS: ALICIA STONE PHOTOS: ZACH CORDNER
A winery in Oceanside? Yep, it's true!
A lucky perk for contributing to this magazine is personally discovering new ways to explore Oceanside. When I think we have covered every available adventure, I find another waiting just around the corner or just up the street. When the activity includes sipping excellent wine in a breathtaking locale that doesn’t entail driving outside our city limits, then I’m happy to share that I’ve found myself in luck once again. Someone wise once said that if you do what you love you’ll never work a day in your whole life. California natives and married couple George and Kim Murray didn’t know they’d be living that wisdom when they purchased a DIY winemaking kit over twenty years ago. What began as a hobby while they were finishing up full careers at the San Onofre Nuclear Power Plant quickly grew into a business that keeps their retirement both busy and gratifying. Beach House Inc. is lovingly named for the home in Oceanside near the sea where the first batches of wine were made in their garage in 1998. Established in 2010, the family operated wine tasting room sits atop a ridge on Sleeping Indian Road with the vineyard down below a steep, winding driveway. The rooftop deck offers umbrella covered pub tables with a stunning panoramic ambiance that rivals any destination postcard. The 360-degree view of the lush green valley reaches out to the deep blue Pacific ocean and sweeps back around to the the snow dusted peaks of Big Bear Mountain. The tasting room can open up into an indoor/outdoor space and houses a bar, stacks of aging wine barrels, merchandise, and olive oil and vinegar made for Beach House from the Paso Robles region. The winery is open to the public Saturday and Sundays from 12pm to 4pm and private tastings are by appointment only. THEOSIDER.COM
The pet-friendly winery has a capacity of 80 guests to accommodate all types of events including weddings. All food at the venue is catered and paired accordingly. Annual events range from a “Holiday Mercato” for local farmers, artists, and businesses to share products and services to “Wine and Chocolate Pairings’’ (Valentine’s and Christmas) and “Dinner in the Vineyard” (summer time). On the first Saturday of each month, Beach House provides the wine for the Oceanside Adventures Wine Cruise at the harbor and bottles are available for sale at our local Red and White Market with a retail price of $22 to $40. George and Kim belong to the San Diego County Vintners Association, The Wine Institute, and The Ramona Valley Vintners Association. Their wines have received many accolades, including multiple Double Gold, Gold and Silver medals from the San Francisco Chronicle, the San Diego and Orange County Fairs and Finger Lakes (New York) competitions. “We’re super excited about the growth in Oceanside, not only from a business perspective 24
Owners George and Kim Murray
but as part of the community,” said Kim when talking about our city. “It’s wonderful to see the locals working together to share all Oceanside has to offer: our beautiful beaches, our harbor, the Mission, and our agricultural region as well.”

THE PET SURRENDER PROGRAM WORDS: PROMISE YEE PHOTOS: RENORDO BOWEN
THEOSIDER.COM
The San Diego Humane Society’s pet surrender program places pets that can no longer be cared for by their owners with new adoptive families. The service is regularly used at the Humane Society’s Oceanside, Escondido, and San Diego campuses. Ayeshah Al-Humaidhi, director of the San Diego Humane Society Oceanside campus, explained that one of the most common reasons a pet is surrendered is family relocation. “Six thousand and ninety-one animals were relinquished to San Diego Humane Society, across all campuses, in the last fiscal year. The consequences for pets in regions where this service does not exist can be quite troubling.” Areas that don’t have this service pets might 26
be left abandoned. This creates health and safety risks as animals try to fend for themselves, and if not spayed or neutered, they also add to the homeless pet population. The Humane Society takes every step to ensure pets have a secure home. It provides pet owners with resources to help them keep their pet, or seek a new adoptive family. The Humane Society’s PAWS San Diego program provides low-income and homebound seniors help with pet food costs and delivery, transportation to the vet, and dog walking services. PAW’s outreach services furnish pet care and supplies to homeless pet owners. Families looking for a new home for their pet
are directed to a third party online forum that links them with people seeking a pet. To further aid pet owners, the Humane Society website has a rehoming toolkit that helps families arrange adoptions from their home. “Pet owners can take it upon themselves to find the right new home for their pet, so they never even have to spend time in a shelter,” Al-Humaidhi said. If these options do not resolve the problem, the Humane Society serves as a safety net. “If ultimately an owner is unable to find a home for their pet, we’re able to take the pet into our care,” Al-Humaidhi said. “And yes, we do occasionally have animals that get left/abandoned at SDHS.” The end goal is to ensure pets are in loving
homes and owners have the ability to take care of them. On the other side of the coin, Al-Humaidhi recommended that families looking to adopt a pet visit the Humane Society adoption website, and come in and visit animals they’re considering adding to their household. “Once someone has selected an animal, and they’re interested in adopting, they’ll meet with an adoptions counselor and spend time getting to know the pet,” Al-Humaidhi said. All pets adopted from the Humane Society are spayed or neutered, micro-chipped, and dewormed. Surrendered pets also come with information on their “likes” and “dislikes” provided by their previous owner. “There are many benefits 27
to adopting a surrendered pet, most of all that you are providing a home to a homeless pet,” AlHumaidhi said. “Our mission is to inspire compassion, and a big part of that is understanding that things don’t always work out and families sometimes have unforeseen circumstances that necessitates relinquishing their beloved pet to a shelter.”
To meet furry friends that are up for adoption, please stop by the San Diego Humane Society Oceanside campuses located at 2905 San Luis Rey Road and 572 Airport Road in Oceanside. THEOSIDER.COM

TEN
THINGS YOU DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT
OCEANSIDE LIBRARIES
Libraries cannot be measured in books alone. They play an important role in communities—big and small. In addition to providing materials and resources, libraries promote literacy, develop a love of reading, offer free programs, help to share information, cultures and viewpoints, and improve the quality of life. The Oceanside Public Library has a history of milestones and achievements, and in 2018 helped to secure Oceanside’s designation as one of just fourteen inaugural State of California’s Cultural Districts. WORDS: KRISTI HAWTHORNE PHOTOS COURTESY OF OCEANSIDE HISTORICAL SOCIETY
Oceanside's first Library location was the second floor of the Spencer Building, photographed here in 1909.

3.
1.
The Oceanside Public Library was created by a city ordinance on December 13, 1904. The Women’s Christian Temperance Union, known for its stance against drinking, donated the Library’s first 250 books. The Library’s first location was in an upstairs room of the Bank of Oceanside building, located on the northwest corner of Second and Hill Streets (now Mission and Coast Highway).
2.
By 1922, the Oceanside Library reported that they had a collection of 9,000 books and were open every day except Sunday from 8am to noon and 1pm to 5 pm. To accommodate summer visitors the hours were extended to 6pm. Edith Whiting was the librarian at the time, and she served that position from 1917 to 1952.
3.
In 1924, the Library, along with city offices, was moved to the newly built I.O.O.F. building
THEOSIDER.COM
at 505 Second Street (Mission Avenue). Just a few years later, the city hall and the Library were moved to the Borden building—a large three-story brick building at the corner of Third (Pier View Way) and Tremont. In 1934, a new city hall and Library was built at 704 Third Street (Pier View Way). It was the first building built to house city services rather than renting space.
4.
The Library’s first home, apart from other city offices, was built in 1946. At a cost of just over $34,000, the new facility was located at 327 North Nevada Street. At the time it was built, it had an inventory of 27,000 books and included a reading room, children’s room, outdoor patio, a fishpond, and boasted of an “ultra-modern automatic heating and ventilation plant.”
5.
In 1968, the Library put the first Bookmobile into service. Painted a “shiny buttercup 32
yellow,” it housed 5,000 volumes. Purchased at a cost of $28,000 it was just the second bookmobile in San Diego County. The following year, Helen Nelson became the head Librarian—a position she held until 1994, when she retired.
6.
Friends of the Oceanside Public Library, a non-profit organization, was founded in 1971. Its mission is to support and promote the services and resources of the Oceanside Public Library through community involvement, volunteer activities, and fundraising. Volunteers are an important component and adult and teen volunteer hours last year were valued at $704,931.00.
7.
As Oceanside grew, so did the need for a larger library. In 1972, it was moved to 615 Fourth Street (now Civic Center Drive) in a building, which previously housed a Safeway grocery store. The new facility increased the Library from 7,000
8.
square feet to 21,000. Many might remember Dewey the cat—named after the Dewey Decimal System, who resided at this library. Dewey was a large gray cat that had full reign at the library, frequently sprawling himself on reading tables or greeting patrons at the copy machine.
8.
The Mission Branch Library was opened in 1986 to not only alleviate some of the overcrowding at the Main Library, but to offer services more convenient to patrons in the San Luis Rey Valley. In 1990, the Library acquired a used catering truck and converted it into the Adelante Bookmobile to serve Spanish speaking patrons and communities of Oceanside.
9.
In 1987, the building that housed the Library was demolished and the Library was moved to a temporary facility in the old Weseloh car dealership building on South Hill Street (Coast
Highway). The following year, construction began on Oceanside’s new civic center and library. The beautiful new Library opened in late 1989, and was officially dedicated in February of 1990. With help from the FOPL, an extensive renovation was done in 2011.

Today, the Oceanside Public Library is just as an important to our city as when it first opened in 1904. With over 500,000 people walking through the door a year and over 400,000 items being checked out, the Library has 10,000 new users annually and offers over 1,500 programs a year with nearly 45,000 attendees. Most recently the Oceanside Library is proud to have seven historic newspapers in its collection digitized. Thansks to a grant from the State Library, researchers can read through seven Oceanside newspapers from 1888 to 1924 online at cdnc.ucr.edu. 33

Curtis holding it down at last year's Pier Club Day Party with Oceanside performer John Givez.
CURTIS BAKER WORDS: JAMEY STONE PHOTOS: ZACH CORDNER Remember when you were a young adult and you had plans after graduating high school to leave the comfy nest of your hometown with visions of adventure? I did, as well, but for Curtis Baker—his plans have been quite the opposite. Curtis was born at Tri City hospital to parents Curt and Barbara Baker. He went to McCullough elementary, Lincoln Middle School, and graduated from Oceanside High. But instead of looking outside of his hometown for his future, he chose to stay put and follow his dreams. Curtis recently graduated from San Marcos State University with a major in Sociology. In high school, Baker played both football and golf, but he also had a deep passion for music. He loved to produce tracks, help local underground artists get their footing, and Curtis loved to DJ events. The problem was that to make the DJ scene work, he often found himself leaving Oceanside for downtown San Diego, where the music scene was in full effect. Although he was making a little bit of money in the music game, he needed something more solid that he could depend financially, so he became a THEOSIDER.COM
manager at Emerald Isle Golf Course. The only set back with his new job was that he didn’t have enough time to travel and share his gift of making music. That’s where his passion project came to fruition; why not bring the travel vibes home to Oceanside? Hence, the Pier Club Day Party was born. What a concept! Bringing great music, local people, and fun to one location a few times a year. The first event was on top of Hello Betty Fish House on their sundeck that overlooks the pier and beautiful Pacific Ocean. It was such a success that we here at The Osider Magazine reached out to Curtis to help us with our first Oside Flavor food event, and what a great experience it was. Curtis is living proof that if you do what you love and believe in your community, good things will happen to you. He’s the perfect example of what it means to be an “Osider.” When asked why he loves Oceanside so much, Curtis replied, “That’s easy. It’s the people and its diversity of culture.” We couldn’t agree more. Make sure to check out Curtis’ Instagram: @thepierclubdayparty 34

THE LEGEND OF PROFESSOR
HAND OF THE MAGICIAN Born and raised in Ireland and the UK in the late 40s, Peter Beames is a worldrenowned teacher of golf. Known for his exceptional skills and teaching methods, Peter wrote a legendary golf instruction book called Walk Thru To Par and has instructed some of the greatest players in the history of the game. The Osider recently caught up with Peter in his work loft at Linksoul, and here’s what he had to say about life, golf, and the pursuit of happiness. WORDS: AARON SCHMIDT PHOTOS: ZACH CORDNER

BEAMES Where did you grow up, Peter? I grew up mostly close to Liverpool in the UK about 40 miles from Dublin, Ireland, where I was born. What was it like growing up there? Well, in my day, it was kind of like the border. If you were in Ireland, the thing to do was get to England, and that’s what my father did. I was very small then. When you got to eight years of age, to be in the societal upper crust, supposedly you were sent away to school—and that devastated me. It made them—it destroyed me. What were you into as a kid? Tin soldiers. How did you get into golf? My father started me when I was three years old in Wales. On holidays, people from the cities would go about 150 miles, which in those days, would’ve taken about four or five hours to get to the coast. My father, being a lawyer, rented a house for a month. So when I was three, I was playing golf with a cut down club. I got serious about golf when

didn’t play—I think I started again when I was about fourteen.
Oh, so you joined the army? No, I did not [laughs]. I remember him starting with my mother, telling me what to do. That wasn’t the way I played tin soldiers—I told the tin soldiers what to do. This was when I was about sixteen or seventeen.
When did you come to the United States and why here? I came here in 1968 to become the greatest golfer in the world. And in 1970, there could be a case made that for 24 hours, I was the greatest golfer in the world because I was leading Arnold Palmer, Gary Player, and Lee Trevino.
What kind of schooling did you have? British boarding schools are ten times more advanced than anything in America and I’m not saying that arrogantly. I mean, we were fluent in Latin and Greek—not that I think that it did me any good. I told people that I went to Princeton—and I did—to clean golf clubs. Were you playing golf during that time? There was a great span of time where I
So you were pro then? Yes, I turned pro very quickly because in my day, you could basically go out and say you were a “pro” and play in the German Open or Dutch Open. You weren’t any good, but you were a pro. I turned pro when I was eighteen. Okay, you originally came to the States in the late 60s, were you bouncing back and

forth from the US to the UK back then? Yeah, I eventually ended up in California staying with my brother in La Jolla, where you could get a gallon of gas for like ten cents or something. At that time, I was hopeless. This is a great story for people who are hopeless. I went off to South Africa and competed and the whole year of ’68 I never qualified. They were great golfers, but there’d only be probably 150 players and I wasn’t even making the cut in that. But the next year, I finished 4th in the South African PGA. Did you ever compete in the PGA here? I came over to the States and I played about six or seven Monday qualifying’s in 1976 and I actually Monday qualified for the Ed McMahon Open. I met Ed and told him that I didn’t know who he was and he had a big laugh. I played in the Westchester Classic, and that was about my only time

Jimmy Runcorn, is the one has to cross the mortal coil and go through life’s trials and tribulations and connect the question mark back into the “8.” It's as simple as that.
When did that book come out? It came out in 1984. It’s my first published book. I’ve got many book projects in the works—The Making Of A Golfer and The Template, to name a few. And then I’ve been working on my book, The Boy Who Rode Clouds as well.
How did you get the nickname “The Professor?” I think John Ashworth gave it to me. I don’t particularly like it. It’s very pretentious.
What’s The Boy Who Rode Clouds all about? The Boy Who Rode Clouds is a very simple story. The universe is a perfect “8.” This has been found to be true. In this “8,” there’re thirteen dimensions and when The Book Of All Knowledge is stolen, the main dimension is fractured into a question mark. That’s where we are in life. And this boy,
What’s your affiliation with John and Linksoul? So I knew John when he was seventeen and a ball boy at La Costa Resort. Apparently, he tells me I gave him a lesson, which was the greatest lesson ever. He was my guinea pig for Walk Thru To Par. He got into a college in Arizona and became number one on their golf team. Many years later, I met him again in the 90s at La Costa and he told me that he was going to make me famous. So I ended up becoming the “little
41
man” on his Ashworth golf shirts. They did a whole marketing thing about it. When John sold his company to Adidas and decided to do Linksoul, I don’t think there was any discussion to join him—I came along on his coat strings. He’s been tremendously kind and I’ve been very fortunate to have him and Jeffrey Cunningham—his business partner—in my life. What’s your connection with Goat Hill Park? Well, we were one of the people who saved it. I go to Goat Hill frequently—I’ve been playing there for 30 years. I’m available for lessons much of the time. What’s your philosophy on life? My philosophy is “giving is living and living is giving.” It’s not all about money because if you do good things and help people out—the universe will pay you.

Carla &Linda’s Walking Food Tours
An innovative Oceanside business specializing in showcasing local restaurants WORDS: ELIZABETH SCHWARTZE PHOTOS: PRISCILLA IEZZI
Owners Carla J. Werts and Linda P.T. Piña are passionate about Oceanside and its thriving food scene. “We started this business because we want people to see Oceanside the way we see Oceanside,” Linda stated proudly. Oceanside is now a cutting-edge dining destination with chefdriven restaurants elevating Oceanside’s appeal. The ladies credit Aaron and Roddy at The Flying Pig for taking a chance on Oceanside in 2011. Since then, a deliciously-eclectic array of amazing chefs and restaurants have followed suit. The food tour concept was created by fate. As self-proclaimed foodies and long time residents of Oceanside, Carla and Linda relished their growing dining options. Their foodie enthusiasm bubbled over, and friends sought their advice. Those same friends would then host guests and rely on Carla and Linda’s suggestions. Soon there were so many new restaurants to unveil, they’d have to sample a dish at multiple restaurants within walking distance—calling it a “food hop.” The ladies realized they had a business opportunity founded from doing something they dearly love—eating at Oceanside restaurants with friends! In 2015, Carla & Linda’s Walking Food Tours became their official business, passion, and labor of love. The ladies first approached Barrel Republic Oceanside with the walking food tour concept, and it was well-received by Chef Mike Brown and General Manager, Sean Hale. The warm reception gave the ladies courage to talk to more restaurants,
and they now work with about twenty different restaurants. There are three different tours offered in Oceanside: North Oside, South O, and Heart of Oside. Each tour lasts approximately three hours and features four-to-five different restaurants within walking distance. There’s an average eightto-twelve people on each tour. About 60% of their clientele are local, and almost half are repeat

PCH Bar & Grill is a surprise favorite, especially for their burgers,” said Linda. On a recent North Oside walking food tour, repeat customers from Westminster, California, brought their brother Mario. After eating Bagby’s “The Brie Thinker” pizza, Mario, who hails from Traverse City, Michigan, loved the pizza: “I’ve never had pizza like that before.” Most of the restaurants are established, and the chefs create off-menu items for Carla and Linda’s tours. Petite Madeline is a big supporter and goes “above and beyond” according to Carla. “The tour captures the moment when people enjoy the food the chef prepares for them. Carla and Linda are so great to work with,” stated Chef Marc. The chef at each restaurant often take THEOSIDER.COM

the time to come out, meet the group, and introduce the plate they have prepared. With advanced notice, the tour accommodates guests with food allergies. “Most chefs embrace the challenge of preparing a dish for someone with a food allergy,” explained Linda. The price of the tour includes food from each stop, reserved seating, a narrated walking tour, a “schwag bag” at the end, and good company to share the experience. Drinks are not included. “Most of us start as strangers, but three hours later, we all end as friends,” smiled Linda. The ladies have embraced Oceanside as their hometown, and recently experienced a mutual appreciation when Carla was diagnosed with breast cancer. The industry pulled together, and Urge Gastropub and Whiskey Bank hosted an event where the proceeds from every beer sold went to Carla’s treatment. The event was both a huge success, and a spirit booster that helped Carla beat cancer. The love between the restaurants and the ladies makes for a tour full of good vibes. Try new restaurants, learn some local history, make a few foodie friends, and experience Oceanside’s culinarycentric community first-hand by booking a tour with Carla & Linda. Both private and evening tours can be arranged with advanced notice. As a way to show their love, Carla and Linda created a special discount just for The Osider readers! LEGEND NANO ART GALLERY WORDS: KATIE LALICATA PHOTOS: ZACH CORDNER In case you haven’t noticed, Oceanside is changing. The potential for Oceanside to become an even more edgy and funky town is practically oozing from its core. Owner and curators of Legend Nano Art Gallery, Paul and Andi Bockwell, not only love the soul and diversity of Oceanside—they’re working on enhancing that vibe. This past September, Paul and Andi took over the Gallery nestled across the street from The Privateer and Anita’s, and they couldn’t be happier with the location. Singing the praises of this town, Paul believes that “South O is the coolest part of San Diego.” Since obtaining complete ownership of the gallery,
THEOSIDER.COM
he’s found like-minded people here in Oceanside and joined forces. “We have the intention of creating a stronger community through the art scene. What Oceanside is offering is more authentic than what is going on in the neighboring towns,” said Paul. As a local who knows that change is inevitable, it makes me beyond stoked to see people who want to incite change in a positive way. People who want to change not what Oceanside is, but inspire a movement that enhances the “counter culture” of artists and musicians that already exists here. Putting a positive spin on the idea of gentrification, a word that usually carries a negative connotation, Paul prefers to call what’s been

happening in our coastal towns “redevelopment.” This vision of redevelopment encompasses the idea of not separation of a community, but inclusion. This idea is about a continual expansion of the grassroots effects that have taken over Oceanside. Only now it includes a vibrant art and
music scene to an already thriving local culture. Paul believes he may be a few years ahead of his time, but if history proves anything correct, most visionaries are. It’s a blessing to have someone with such a brilliant mind come into Oceanside with a desire to expand the community

that’s already taking place. Art and music infuse a town with life. The Nano Legend Gallery adds another epic dynamic to the creative and innovative pulse of South O. Their unassuming, modest storefront is an underwhelming representation of what lives behind the doors, and underneath the layers of what this Art Gallery is. Paul and Andi are not just offering four walls that have pieces hung as decorations—Legend Nano Gallery is proving to be a foundation to wake up the creative consciousness of this town, creating a mini revolution for art and music to bloom. Legend Nano hosts events every Thursday night from 6-10pm with ceramics, live artists, live music, and good vibes. They're also pumped to announce their next show called Interplay. The installation kicks off Saturday January 5th from 6-9 pm featuring artist Kerry Suzanne Campbell and Michael Maas. Whether you're an art fanatic or a curious neighbor, come on by to enjoy the party! This contemporary space is charged with an infections passion to bring people together. “It’s an honor to be a part of a town that is bursting with untapped potential,” explained Paul. “This is a call to all the artists and musicians, to take over the block and create a flourishing bohemian subculture.”

TNT SERVICES WORDS: AARON SCHMIDT PHOTOS: CHRISTOPHER DONEZ
(L to R): Nancy Clason, Johua Marks, Greg Templeton, Edwin Leon, and Brittany Burns.
Located in the valley off Airport Road, TNT Services has been a staple for automotive repair in Oceanside for many years. Originally started by the Clason Family, TNT has been a family owned and operated business since 1981. “We actually started the business on Coast Highway in June of 1981. The owner lost the building, so we moved to the valley. We originally moved into next door’s location, but we moved shortly after and have been in this building since 1989,” said owner Nancy Clason. She runs the day-today operations at TNT, along with her daughter Brittany Burns, who’s also the general manager. With over 30 years of automotive repair experience, TNT Services specializes in providing quality service for all Toyota and Honda makes, but they also provide service for Acura, Hyundai, Infiniti, Lexus, Nissan, Subaru, Kia, and Scion. THEOSIDER.COM
“We primarily specialize in Toyotas, but over the last ten years we branched out to Hondas and other cars,” said Nancy. TNT Services prides itself on being North County’s first independent Toyota service specialists: “We are the original independent Toyota repair facility in North County. We do all forms of auto repair like brake jobs, tune-ups, oil changes, and major engine repair. We don’t do wheel alignment, bodywork, and we’re not a smog station,” stated Brittany. TNT’s three full time mechanics take great pride in their specialties, including, engine repair, brake repair, transmission repair, and auto electrical service. “We pride ourselves on being a family-run operation. We’ve created long lasting friendships with our customers,” said Brittany. “Some of our customers have literally watched 52
me grow up, and then watched my kids grow up.” It’s good knowing that “family”-style atmospheres still exist in businesses here in Oceanside. With a huge clientele of happy and very loyal customers, it’d probably be a good idea to take your vehicle in for a quick diagnostic check up. The customer service at TNT is fast, friendly, and most of all—honest. It can be really hard to find a trusted mechanic these days, so make sure to check them out. Nancy, Brittany, and the rest of the fine folks at TNT will treat you and your car just like family.

FRAZIER FARMS
WORDS: ALYSON KLIER PHOTOS: CHRISTOPHER DONEZ Conveniently located off the I-5 on Oceanside Boulevard, Frazier Farms is a grocery store, a natural market, and your neighborhood farmer’s market all under one supermarket-sized roof. The variety of departments and products that Frazier Farms offers its customers is really impressive. They highlight local produce and products whenever possible and buy organic, personally sourced, green coffee beans, and roast them themselves for ultimate freshness. Frazier Farms has a 24-foot fresh seafood display, which often has fresh local seafood, and on-site butchers who offer grain-fed meat free of hormones and preservatives from animals that have been raised in a natural and humane manner. For their fresh squeezed juice bar, Frazier Farms has partnered with an orange farm that only picks the oranges when they’re at the peak of sweetness to create fresh orange juice that’s in high demand, and sells out quickly! Their juice bar also has a large variety of other fresh squeezed or pressed juices. The custom cheese department is extensive— one of the largest in San Diego County—and a THEOSIDER.COM
kombucha bar offers Living Tea (another of our great Oceanside businesses) kombucha on draft. There’s also a full-scale professional kitchen that makes family recipes from scratch and creates all of the To-Go and fresh deli food selections in the store. Did I mention there’s also a large bulk foods department and an extensive healthcare, body, and vitamin section? The first Frazier Farms originally opened in 1971 in Escondido, and currently, there are two Frazier Farms—the Oceanside location and one in Vista. Both stores are still owned and operated by the third generation of Frazier brothers who are all extremely involved in the day-to-day operations of the company and stores, so it really has a “family corner store” vibe despite its large size. The Frazier family appreciates the strong community of Oceanside and is happy to be involved with many local charities and events, such as the greater San Diego Boys & Girls Club, the Oceanside Turkey trot, the Strawberry fest, and sponsorship of local soccer clubs. While expansion to other locations is always a possibility, the Frazier family is most concerned 54
with bringing value to the Oceanside community with the highest possible quality produce and products. Whether you need to stock the fridge or prepare for a party, the friendly and helpful employees at Frazier Farms have got you covered!

WHAT’S BREWING OSIDE? BREAKWATER BREWING CO. WORDS: ERIC KLIER PHOTOS: ZACH CORDNER
Master Brewer Sean Quinn and owner Shannon Sager
Over the last decade, North County has become one of the beer capitals of the world. This has brought many awards and accolades in the craft beer community, and many of those breweries call Oceanside home. If you just drive down Coast Highway, you’ll see an array of craft beer bars and breweries. And the oldest and arguably the best is Breakwater Brewing. Started in 2008, Breakwater has pumped out award-winning beer and mead at a high level for over a decade now. Owner Shannon Sager has a deep background in high quality beer by first cutting his teeth at Pizza Port in Carlsbad, then he brought his knowledge and passion to Oceanside and started Breakwater. After a short hiatus a year ago, Shannon is back and with master brewer Sean Quinn and they’re going
next level! One of my all time favorite beers and SDIBF gold winner is the DMJ IPA. With a piney hop flavor, this west coast IPA gets its name from Camp Pendleton’s beautiful surf break. With its well-balanced hop profile and golden appearance, it has become a crowd favorite. If hops are a bit too bitter for you, then the Rye Dawn brown ale is unbelievable. It has won gold at the World beer Cup, and at the 2018 GABF going against the best breweries in the United States. With its complex and smooth flavors, it’ll have any beer snob drooling. On a different note, the Rasbiscus Mead is also a SDIBF gold winner—it’s a delicious mix of malty honey, raspberries, and hibiscus flowers. With so many great beers, it’d take a novel to describe them all. From the Gluten Rebruced, 57
a light gluten reduced beer brewed for local patron Bruce, or the 10% Teahupo triple IPA; you’ll definitely find something up your alley. “Were just trying to bring high quality beer to a high quality community, said Shannon. And with Sean’s passion and know-how, Breakwater Brewing should be on any beer lover’s checklist. They also offer growlers for take out so you can enjoy their awesome brew in the comfort of your own home, so give them a try and see what all the fuss is about.

Located on Coast Highway, Start Fresh is a fairly new restaurant that’s sure to become your new breakfast “go to” spot. Owner Tino Hernandez has been in the restaurant business since 1980 and originally opened Baja Tacos on Mission Avenue in the year 2000. Tino started Start Fresh Café in March of 2014 with the credo of “start fresh.” “We make everything in the morning to start fresh,” said Tino. His brother Jose owns Mary’s Restaurant right up the street, which is another great spot in Oside for breakfast, so you know serving great food runs in their family. Start Fresh’s menu is based on breakfast and lunch, but locals seem to favor the breakfast menu the most as it features some of the most delicious and authentic breakfast staples. With the freshest ingredients, Tino and his crew whip up some goodness every morning. Local favorite meals include the Lumberjack, which is the breakfast of champions and my personal breakfast choice. It should also be noted that they have some of the best house made hashbrowns in town and after sampling some for myself, it’s easy to see why they’re also a local favorite. Don’t get me started on their cinnamon rolls—they’re so darn yummy I had to order two of them! For lunchtime, Start Fresh has got you covered as well with an amazing lunch menu that features all the standards like burgers, fish & chips, and hot sandwiches like the Hot Turkey Sandwich, which by the way, is like having THEOSIDER.COM

Another lunchtime favorite are the Chilaquiles and yes, they’re muy delicioso! Basically, just try all their meals and then wash them down with their Mimosas, you’ll be glad (and giddy) that you did. And you can’t forget about their dessert pies! The Lemon Meringue and Chocolate Banana pies are to die for and are my personal favorites. Overall, if you’re in the mood and on the hunt for some breakfast that’s on point and hits the spot every time—no need to look any further—Start Fresh Café is the place for you. 58

HOMESTYLE HAWAIIAN WORDS: JAMEY STONE PHOTOS: ZACH CORDNER Ohana is a Hawaiian word for “family,” and when Hawaiian ohana gathers, it’s all about sharing—especially, when it comes to food. When you enter a Hawaiian home, one thing is for sure, you won’t be leaving without a full and happy belly. So when I noticed a sign for Hawaiian food in an unassuming strip mall, I just had to pop in with hopes of that same great family feeling. Right when I walked in the door, I was transported to the islands with the sound of Polynesian music playing in the background, smiling faces, and a warm welcome. As I looked behind the counter at the menu, I was so happy to see all the amazing local dishes available right here in Oceanside. Of course, they serve most dishes as a traditional plate lunch, which is two scoops of sticky rice, mac salad, and a choice of multiple proteins like Chicken katsu, Teri beef, THEOSIDER.COM

It was so amazing that I had to meet the owner in hopes of coming back to do this story and try everything else on the menu. I asked the cashier to direct me to the owner was and was introduced to Adel Camba. We set up a meeting, and upon arriving for my second visit Adel greeted us with some amazing homemade lemonade made with passion fruit. the restaurant founder Mo Tolentino through his fraternity. After Graduation, Adel spent some time in Maui where he fell in love with Hawaiian food and culture. Upon his return to Cali, he discovered Oceanside and fell in love with our beaches and laidback vibe. He knew right then that he wanted to be here with his business, so he contacted Mo and formed a partnership, and here we are. I highly recommend giving Homestyle Hawaiian a go—you’ll leave full and happy guaranteed. Just make sure to try the Fried Musubi— it’s the bomb!

MANGIA E BEVI WORDS: KATIE LALICATA PHOTOS: DANIELLE JACKSON Sometimes something new comes around and blows your mind. But sometimes, someone takes what’s old and prized to them, and makes it new to you. This presentation then becomes an even more valuable gift because of the history and tradition woven into it. The owners and chef at Mangia e Bevi have done this for you. As an Italian and life long restaurateur, Tore Trupiano is excited to bring you flavors and dishes he’s grown up eating, but has never before served in a restaurant. To say that food is his passion would be an understatement— food is his life, and the food on this menu is close to his heart. “With this restaurant here, I wanted to go outside the box a little bit. I wanted to bring back old world traditional dishes from Sicily with flavors still being used in Italy today. So I knew that I wanted to do a menu inspired by my childhood,” said Tore. You wont find spaghetti and meatballs, or chicken Parmesan on the menu here. And that’s a good thing. His vision for this restaurant is classic Italian with a modern twist. His chef, Sterling Smith, takes techniques from fine dining and years of crafting sushi and applies his culinary expertise to execute beautifully impressive plates with flavors to match. Understanding and emphasizing the importance of freshness, the team at Mangia e Bevi takes no short cuts in preparing and sourcing as local as possible. Their produce comes from neighborhood farms, and their sauces, pastas, and breads are hand made—just like in the old days, crafted in house with love. The Linguini, a squid ink pasta is decorated with a variety of shellfish and represents the seafood that’s ever present in all parts of Italy, but specifically in the southern region and island of Sicily. Two of Tore’s childhood favorites also found their way on to the menu: Arancino (saffron rice balls), and Panelle (chickpea fritters). Growing up, these are the two things Tore would request for his birthday—no presents, no clothes, just these amazing old world street food treats. All the things that represent classic Italian tradition, Mangia e Bevi is now bringing to you. “The community here has supported us with open hearts every single time, and has so much to offer. That’s what I love about Oceanside,” said Trupiano. When you come to Mangia e Bevi, you receive all aspects of Italian hospitality. The service is professional, the prices are fair, and the food in phenomenal. This modern Italian kitchen creates a perfect combination of all the good feels. Once you go there to eat—you're family. 62
