SET IN STONE A WORD FROM THE PUBLISHER

Spring is on the way, and I’m beyond excited. With the rainy winter behind us, I look forward to sunny days filled with bike rides, beach days, and the fresh smell of blooming gardens in every neighborhood. There’s no doubt that Oceanside is the place to be as the warmth of the sun comes to greet us with open arms. As we continue to grow and change, we need to have open arms as well. Sure there’ll be more people, buildings, and business coming to town, but there’ll also be new opportunities through the changes happening here. Like I said before, everything goes through changes. It’s easy to sit back and scowl at change, but if we as a community get involved, we can help to keep the right traditions and values in place. So, before you start to cast stones—let’s build bridges instead. We all love Oceanside and have the same opportunity as the next person to move it forward with great purpose and resolve. I say let’s be the change. Spring is here and so is the new Oceanside.

GREEN O

10YEARS OF GREEN OCEANSIDE Oceanside’s Green Oceanside (GO) campaign evolved from a simple idea for a small Earth Day event, to a citywide endeavor and a sense of community pride for our environment. For the past decade, the Green Oceanside campaign and ever-growing GO team has been dedicated THEOSIDER.COM

to broadening awareness of all sustainability goals, such as clean water, zero waste, energy conservation, water conservation, and climate action. The GO team evolved from a handful of City staff and environmental enthusiasts, to include hundreds of Green Oceanside businesses, 18

non-profit organizations, schools, local community groups, and thousands of green Oceanside residents who have participated in at least one of the dozens of events held annually in celebration of Oceanside’s commitment to healthy and clean water, air, land, and beaches. Over the years, the Green Oceanside campaign has been recognized locally, statewide, and on a federal and international level. From Our Green Oceanside Business Network, to our Zero Waste School Programs, this community pride or our environment shines through the efforts of all our Oceanside residents and partners—including you. Just by simply trying to be better to the environment every day makes a big difference. Thank you for your Green Oceanside support!

GINA THOMAS WORDS: ELIZABETH SCHWARTZE PHOTO: PRISCILLA IEZZI

Gina Thomas is a long-time champion of Oceanside who’s job is to bring champions to Oceanside. Now in her tenth year as the Race Director for IRONMAN 70.3 Oceanside, Gina has created the premiere tourism revenue-generating event in Oceanside. Gina’s passion and drive to showcase her home of Oceanside to top athletes and their families and make IRONMAN 70.3 Oceanside a destination event makes her Oceanside’s Finest. A native of Minnesota, Gina’s family moved to San Diego when she was a teen. After graduating from Mira Mesa High, she was drawn to Oceanside. One of her original homes was on the “P” dock of Oceanside Harbor. She married an Oceanside police officer, had two sons, and is proudly raising her second-generation Oceanside High Pirates. The IRONMAN Oceanside 70.3 consists of a 1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike ride, and 13.1 mile run, equaling 70.3 miles! Gina started with IRONMAN 70.3 Oceanside as the Director of Volunteers in 2005, where she was in charge of coordinating 2,000 volunteers. She was promoted to Race Director in 2009, and then immediately started working to showcase the city and make it a destination race. When she started,

THEOSIDER.COM

IRONMAN 70.3 Oceanside hosted approximately 2,200 athletes and registration was ongoing. Today, the same event reaches capacity of 3,500 athletes in one day of registration with 84-percent of all athletes traveling outside of the area to Oceanside, and 23-percent traveling internationally. As the main Oceanside ambassador for IRONMAN 70.3 Oceanside,

“Oceanside ambassador for IRONMAN 70.3 Oceanside, Gina spends the entire year readying the city for the 3,500 athletes and their families to arrive the beginning of April” Gina spends the entire year readying the city for the 3,500 athletes and their families to arrive the beginning of April. “Conservatively, IRONMAN Oceanside 70.3 generates $3.9 million in economic impact. It represents over 2800 athletes. No other event drives higher occupancy and ADR (Average

Daily Rate) in our community,” said Leslee Gaul, President/CEO for Visit Oceanside, Not only does the event generate major revenue for the city, The IRONMAN Foundation gives back, too. “The IRONMAN Foundation is the charitable arm of IRONMAN and we are united in one purpose: to create positive, tangible impact in race communities through grant funding and volunteerism. Over $250,000 has been awarded to local nonprofit initiatives.” This year, there’ll be over 300 athletes racing in support of IRONMAN Foundation. On April 7th (the day after the race), the third annual IRONMAN Foundation in conjunction with Oceanside’s own Junior Seau Foundation Adaptive Surf Clinic is presented by the Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF). Children, women, and men with physical challenges will be coached by CAF coaches and IRONMAN athletes. “O’side is forever home and I enjoy caring for my community while putting a world class event that also gives back to our community through the IRONMAN Foundation and IRONKIDS. I am passionate about the athletes and their families meeting this community. This is home for me and athletes get a taste of what Oside is really about,” said Gina proudly.

A TO Z WIRELESS CELLPHONE & TABLET REPAIR WORDS: ALICIA STONE  PHOTOS: CHRISTOPHER DONEZ

Recently, my iPad, which I rely upon daily, slid slowly off the couch and impacted on the floor at a perfect screen-shattering angle. After a minute of pure grief, I began a quest to find a reliable local repair shop. A recommendation brought me into A to Z Wireless, and soon I was reunited with my beloved tablet. A to Z is a hidden gem that offers our community a service that’ll always be in demand in our ever-changing, tech-reliant reality. When the inevitable device drop happens to you just remember that A to Z is close by and ready to get you back on track and on with your life. Oceanside resident and owner Iverson Manlosa has been in the cellular phone industry for over eighteen years. He started out managing an A to Z shop in San Diego, and in 2009, moved to a storefront in the Carlsbad Mall. It was there that he became the sole owner, and in October 2017, he moved into the current location situated on the corner of Coast Highway and Vista Way (next door to Don’s Country Kitchen). A to Z repairs all brands of cell phones and tablets, and does much of the work while you wait. Repair services range from cracked screens THEOSIDER.COM

and hard water damage to data retrieval, and custom requests that include specialty and fabricated parts. The interior of the shop offers a cozy couch, magazines, TV, and fresh coffee to pass time. While you wait, you can watch Iverson at his microscope working on the intricate machinery, or you can check out the plethora of cases, screen protectors, chargers, and other accessories on hand. Iverson told me most of his clientele are return customers sent in by word-of-mouth recommendations. “As a local neighborhood techrepair shop, we take pride in providing quality work. It’s rewarding to help someone recover his or her photos and precious memories. We go deeper into repairs than a typical shop,” said Iverson. After the move from Carlsbad, he realized most of his business was already coming from Oceanside. Iverson appreciates the vibe in South O: “When we were in the mall, the crowd was noticeably different. In Oceanside, there’s a strong sense of community and customers who support small businesses. We treat each other more like family here and we love it!” 24

TEAM SUPERMARROW CYCLES ACROSS AMERICA TO RAISE AWARENESS WORDS: PROMISE YEE  PHOTOS: ZACH CORDNER

From the sidelines, it’s an exciting blur of brightly dressed cyclists as international teams take off from Oceanside and head east on a 3,000-mile bike race across the U.S. for the Race Across America (RAAM). Teams and individual riders will set out June 11th and 15th, to finish the grueling cross-country challenge that climbs up mountains and pushes across plains in twelve states. Once it starts, the race is 24/7 nonstop cycling to Annapolis, Maryland. It takes a team of cyclists about nine days to finish. By the second day of the demanding ride, fatigue and temperaments begin to show. It’s these physical and mental challenges that inspired Dr. Lam Do to form a team of fellow medical doctors, surgeons, and patients to take on this year’s race. Another reason the team is competing is to raise awareness about the need THEOSIDER.COM

for ethnic minority bone marrow donations. Each member of Team SuperMarrow has a personal connection to the cause. Do’s infant son was diagnosed with Leukemia at eighteen months and needed a bone marrow transplant to survive. His wife gave birth to a baby girl and siblings are usually a match, but she was not compatible, and donors of a similar ethnicity were few. So he and his wife, who’s also a doctor, waited with trepidation and hope. A match was found before their son’s second birthday. It came from a retired police officer that lived in Seattle. “A total stranger saved his life,” said Do. “For an ethnic minority or mixed race match, it’s like the lottery— that’s how tough it can be.” Do’s son and daughter will be graduating from high school this June. Do and his wife are forever grateful to the donor, and keep a close connection with the 26

Working with the donor program, Do raises awareness about the need for ethic minority bone marrow donations. His earlier efforts include fundraising drives, speaking weekly on a Vietnamese radio station’s public service campaign, and supporting families. The journey to recovery once a donor is found is not easy. “There are complications up the wazoo,” said Do. Speaking to someone who’s had a similar experience is priceless.

To prepare for the bike race ahead Do (age 53) and team members (ages 43 to 66) ride regularly, and complete long distance qualifiers of over 100 miles, enduring heat, cold, and wind on the long rides. The team has also gotten advice from cyclists who finished the RAAM course. His team’s strategy is for half of the riders to rotate in during an eight-hour shift, and the other half to drive 160 miles ahead with the support crew, rest, and wait for their shift’s turn to   27

Completing the race is on his bucket list, and many of his patients will be at the Oceanside Pier starting line to cheer on the team. THINGS YOU DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT

OCEANSIDE FIRE DEPARTMENT WORDS: KRISTI HAWTHORNE  PHOTOS COURTESY OF OCEANSIDE HISTORICAL SOCIETY

Even in its earliest years, Oceanside recognized the need to organize a fire department. In 1887, a small group of residents volunteered to respond in case of a structure fire and the city acquired fire equipment to protect homes and buildings. Today, the Oceanside Fire Department continues to be an essential public service that protects our City. Its role has greatly expanded beyond firefighting to include medical emergencies, lifeguards, emergency rescues, and more.

3.

6.

1.

Oceanside’s fire department began as a volunteer force, which organized in 1887. Fire equipment, which was little more than a hosecart pulled by the volunteers, was kept at the lumber company at Third (Pier View Way) and Cleveland Streets. Volunteers responded to a call of “Fire!” in the event there was one. In 1888, a bell tower was erected which was rung to summon volunteers. The location of the fire was written on a chalkboard!

2.

Although preliminary steps had been taken to protect the town, the local newspaper wrote about the lack of necessary equipment in 1889: “Some of our blocks are in a risky condition, with such combinations as hay, whiskey-saloons, livery-stables, hotels and defective flues all combined. Citizens, move in the matter at once.”

3.

Records indicate that the original volunteer force likely disbanded and then reorganized

THEOSIDER.COM

again in 1892 with the call for more needed equipment. If there was a concerted effort to protect the growing town from fires, it was woefully inadequate. Tragedy struck in June of 1896 when Oceanside’s grand hotel, The South Pacific, burned to the ground. The fire department did not have ladders or hoses that could reach the fire in the four-story building and the city watched helplessly as it burned to the ground. It was a terrible blow to Oceanside, as there was no other comparable establishment for tourists seeking a beachside resort.

4.

Efforts redoubled after the hotel fire and local merchant John Schuyler was appointed to head a new volunteer group, and an additional hose cart and hoses were purchased. However, these renewed attempts at fire safety and readiness seemed to wane. A permanent fire department was not established until 1906, under the direction of acting Fire Chief L. W. Stump, who 32

assigned positions to volunteers as “laddermen,” “hosemen,” and “nozzlemen,” etc. Years later, with the advent of the automobile, volunteers still had to pull the antiquated hose cart through the streets or pull it with a pickup truck for lack of a motorized fire vehicle.

5.

After Chief Stump retired in 1924, Ernest White, owner of the Oceanside Garage, was appointed to fulfill the position. The City stored the hose cart and other fire equipment in White’s establishment. The following year, Chief White convinced the city to purchase its first fire truck from the American LaFrance Company for $8,500.

6.

It wasn’t until 1929 that Oceanside had its first Fire Station, built at the corner of Third (Pier View Way) and Nevada Streets. Designed by Architect Irving Gill, Fire Station No. 1 is named the “Walt Johnson Fire Station.” Johnson was appointed Fire Chief that same year and was

known for his “broad-brimmed hat, cigar, and frank manner.” It was said that most downtown residents could hear Johnson’s loud voice, which often included profanities, for several blocks. Despite the range of Chief Johnson’s voice, a siren was mounted on the roof of the fire station and operated by a button placed on the front of the building. Citizens without a telephone were instructed to go to the fire station, activate the siren, and wait for a fireman to respond and provide them the location of the fire.

7.

The City continued to rely on volunteer firemen, some of whom also served as police officers. Only the Chief, Assistant Chief, and Captain were paid a salary. It wasn’t until 1939, when John Todd and Richard Trotter were hired as the first paid full-time firemen.

8.

Today, the Oceanside Fire Department employs 112 personnel and sixteen support staff. Firefighter shifts are 24 hours, from 7am7am, with three shift platoons (A, B, and C). The need for volunteers has not diminished, and the department has five volunteers who support personnel. In addition, the Department employs seven full-time Lifeguards and 70 part-time lifeguards, who in addition to beach lifeguard duties, manage the dive rescue, swift water rescue program, and the Junior Lifeguard program.

10.

The Oceanside Fire Department responded to 417 fire calls in 2018. In addition, they responded to 13,671 emergency medical service calls and thousands of other service related calls. The Oceanside Fire Department also provides support to the Oceanside Police Department with a SWAT medic program, and they also support specialized units such as wild land, rescue, and urban search. The Oceanside Fire Department prides itself on readiness to efficiently and effectively serve our community. Their motto is “Save, Serve, and Strive to be the Best!”

9.

There are a total of eight fire stations to service our city, with one administration office, and fire training center. The original Fire Station No. 1, which is still in operation, is the only station equipped with a traditional fire pole.   33

Home grown JOEY DIETZMAN WORDS: JAMEY STONE PHOTOS: ZACH CORDNER

THEOSIDER.COM

One of my favorite things about the people who grow up here in Oceanside is that, more often than not, they never leave. In most other towns, the children can’t wait to leave the nest, but for Osiders, there’s something about our community that always leads us back to our hometown. For Joey Dietzman he never left, instead he decided to build his life in the place he calls paradise. Joey was born to his parents Donald and Barbara Tucker. His dad was a marine stationed at Camp Pendleton, and his mom worked at Marty’s Valley Inn. He went to elementary school on base, and lived in the Capistrano Park neighborhood. His father’s work ethic rubbed off on Joey, and as a youngster he had a paper route for his first job. He later graduated from Oceanside High in 1987. Directly out of school, Joey started a mobile car detailing business called Max Wax. In the eighties, it was a common occurrence to see him all over town detailing cars. From there, he moved into becoming a mortgage broker, where did quite well for himself and his three kids—Micah, Alana, and Maverick. But the job was a real grind and eventually slowed down as the market crashed. This was a tricky time for Joey; it was time to change gears and worry less about his bank account, and more about the quality of life. 34

With this in mind, he started ECO Window Cleaning. Not only did this allow him to stay imbedded in our community, he was also able to create a business that had our environment in mind. He has every major account in Oceanside, and all the supplies he uses contain zero harmful chemicals. Everything they use ends up in the ocean, and it’s his way of ensuring he does his part to keep our beautiful beaches clean for future generations. Joey also gives back by sponsoring local events, such as the Turkey Trot and The Boys and Girls Club annual fundraiser. If that isn’t enough already, he recently took over longtime Oceanside business K&M Frames & Screens with his business partner Geoff Park. In short, Joey is doing his part to preserve Oceanside and make a living at the same time. “Why leave paradise when you can help preserve it?” said Joey. We couldn’t agree more. Vicki Barbolak Oceanside’s very own queen of comedy WORDS: ALICIA STONE PHOTOS: ZACH CORDNER

Vicki Barbolak has come a long way from being a working Oceanside mom to Comedy Store regular to television favorite. She continues her ascent with her “Trailer Nasty” comedy tour while working on a podcast and officiating nuptials in her mobile wedding van. You may recognize Vicki (usually in her famous leopard printed dress) either from TV’s America’s Got Talent or from seeing her around town. Recently, I was fortunate enough to see her live act at The Comedy Store in La Jolla, then sit down in her trailer and chat about her journey so far and her life here in Oceanside.

Where were you born? And how did you end up in Oceanside? I was born in Freeport, Illinois. My dad (Pete Barbolak) played for the Pittsburgh Steelers for two years and we moved around a lot. Then my dad started his business in Oceanside and we’ve been here 40 years. My parents owned Carpets Etc. on Mission Avenue. It was connected to Balboa Liquor Store—they’d have cocktails after work, and then just sleep on the carpet rolls. In the morning, customers would come in and wake them up to buy carpet. So, you joke about your crazy childhood in your act but it really was like that? Oh, yes. My parents had to build a wall—a five-and-a-half foot barrier—between their desks because they’d throw stuff at each other all day, like carpet samples and staplers. They built a wall as a joke? No! For safety! It was really needed! I worked there for twenty years and it was implied that I’d take over someday, but after I started doing stand-up, I told them to sell it for their retirement. I was going through a divorce and I knew I could make a good living there, but I was done. I gave my ex the house and bought my first trailer in Vista Village. It was 800 square feet—one bathroom for my two girls and me, but we were happy and it all worked out. You have two children, right? Yes, Emily and Lily. They grew up locally and went to school here. And now I have three grandsons. And you’re currently married. Yes, I married Lou twelve years ago. He plays piano at The Comedy Store, and he owns LB Tax Services on North Coast Highway here in Oceanside. So, then how did you get into Comedy? I found a crumpled up article in a trash can promoting a stand-up comedy class at The Comedy Store in La Jolla taught by Sandi Shore, Pauly Shore’s sister, and I thought, “I’ll try this.” I had only been to one stand-up club in my life. I walked in there with three large books so people would think I was smart and I just tried it. It was myself and four other guys who became really good friends. It was Howard the psychiatrist, Tony the bank president, Jim the stockbroker, and Tom the CPA.

THEOSIDER.COM

Quality time at home with her dog Jimmy.

That’s quite a mix. Yeah, they were so great and Sandi told me that I had a special gift. It was the first time anyone had ever told me that and it meant so much. I mean, she also had just translated an alien dictionary because she had been “abducted” on an alien spaceship for a year, but still she said I was special and I’ll always be grateful for Sandi. Wow! And Sandi’s mom is Mitzi Shore, the founder of The Comedy Store, right? Yes, I was in one of the last groups of people who Mitzi was bringing up. I was

38

lucky to have that time with her. I remember talking at her house and she’d say, “Okay, now Vicki you go take a nap.” She lived in Dorothy Lamour’s beautiful old mansion and I was afraid to mess up the nice bedding, so I’d lie on her floor and try and wrap my head around how in the world I got there. So you started your career at The Comedy Store? Yeah, in the beginning I did stand-up in bars, but I could never get a spot at The Comedy Store. Then one night Mitzi saw

me in my little leopard dress and said, “Who’s that? Put her up.” I did my set and she called me into the booth and said, “You’re funny. I’m gonna make you a regular. Now go away.” I didn’t even know what a “regular” was. And then came Funniest Mom In America? Yeah, I won Funniest Mom In America! Rosanne Barr hosted the show, and I wrote some stuff for her as well. And then came America’s Got Talent.

So on America’s Got Talent Season 13 you made it to the Top 10 and then you went back for AGT: The Champions. What’s next? I’m doing the Trailer Nasty international tour, and I’m doing a week in Vegas. And I’m working on my Trailer Nasty podcast, which will be more about my life here in the trailer park in Oceanside. Speaking of Oceanside, what are some of your favorite things to do here? My favorite thing to do is kayak in the Harbor. I also really love to go dancing at Larry’s Beach Club, and I like to spend time at the Mission. I love the people in Oceanside. I love that we’re not Carlsbad! I was worried about the gentrification and the big buildings downtown, but then I love sitting on the rooftop at Hello Betty’s! The people of Oceanside are really mindful about keeping our roots, and now we really do have some really cool places to hang out!

©NBC UNIVERSAL 2018

How was that experience? It was really intense—going through the audition to the quarterfinals, semifinals, and finals—but the crew and the producers made me feel supported. I got great advice and I decided it was probably the last time I’d be on network TV, so I wasn’t going to hold anything back. It was a really fun, positive experience and I just enjoyed the ride.

OCEANSIDE ADVENTURES WHERE EVERY TRIP IS AN ADVENTURE! WORDS: ELIZABETH SCHWARTZE  PHOTOS: CARLA MITROFF

The adventures at Oceanside Harbor abound throughout the year, thanks to Oceanside Adventures—Oceanside’s one-and-only whale watching tour company. For over three years, Oceanside Adventures has taken locals and visitors for tours on the Pacific Ocean to enjoy the sights and sounds of nearby aquatic escapades. What started with whale watching and sea life adventures has grown into a thriving business offering a variety of events throughout the year. The beautifully equipped 50-foot Catamaran is 100-percent accessible for all abilities and beckons everyone—there’s a cruise to coordinate with almost every holiday and interest! With the teeming blue waters, no wonder Oceanside Adventure’s tagline is “Where every trip is an adventure!” THEOSIDER.COM

Oceanside Adventures is best known for its dolphin and whale watching expeditions, and it’s true that December through February are often regarded as the best whale watching months. The good news is that whales and dolphins can be spotted all year, and Carla Mitroff, Oceanside Adventures Operations Manager, reports that March and April are actually two of the best months to spot the planet’s largest mammals. Why? Because mother whales and their babies are heading back north from breeding grounds in Baja California, Mexico, and are destined to pass by our coast. To avoid predators, the mother’s tend to keep their babies as close to shore as possible, which increases the chances of a sighting. Dolphins, sea lions, sea birds, and different species of whale can also be spotted just outside 42

the harbor on any given day during the two-hour adventure. A stampede of dolphins is fairly common and awesome to behold. However, it’s the orca/killer whale sightings that happen just a few times each year that are the most treasured. Beyond dolphin and whale watching tours, Oceanside Adventures has elevated its offerings with cruises for every crowd, including the wine-loving crowd. One of the most sophisticated cruises offered by Oceanside Adventures is the monthly Oceanside Harbor Wine Cruise. The first Saturday of each month, Oceanside Adventures and Beach House Winery partner for a 90-minute cruise around the harbor. Beach House Winery lavishes participants with three different wine tastings, and accompanying appetizer platters. It’s an unforgettable time on the harbor for the 21-and-up crowd.

Beach House Winery is Oceanside’s own award-winning local winery making a mark on the San Diego County wine industry as Oceanside’s first vineyard by the sea. Owners George and Kim Murray have many thoughtful ways to share their wines, and their love of wine with their customers. About three years ago, the partnership between the catamaran and the vineyard “tested the waters” to replicate a wine cruise in Dana Point. Since then, Beach House Winery members, locals, and tourists have made the monthly cruise a destination event. Each month, the wine cruise features multiple wine offerings that vary between wines ranging from Chardonnay, Petite Sirah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Viognier, and lighter wine varieties in the summer months. The wine choices are dependent upon the supply Beach House

Winery carries. After the three tastings, guests can purchase a glass of wine for the boat, or a bottle to take home as a souvenir. Beach House Winery wines are produced individually, so if a guest likes a wine, they’re encouraged to buy a bottle or two. A glass of wine ranges from seven to ten dollars. The cruise is $39 per person and Beach House Winery members receive a four-dollar discount. With pleasant music pouring through the speakers, the captain keeps the cruise within the harbor where there’s plenty to see, along with with drinking great wine and making new friends. One time, the catamaran couldn’t dock because two sea lions taking advantage of the empty boat slip were “arguing” over the spot. The catamaran and guests got a good show before docking, therefore letting the native California Sea Lions know that neither of them would get the spot. The Oceanside Harbor Wine Cruise is enjoying an increase in popularity, and for good reason. The wine cruise combines a luxury cruise in a pristine catamaran, delicious local wine, and good company to cruise around the treasure that is Oceanside Harbor. Tickets for adventures can be purchased online at the Oceanside Adventures kiosk outside of the Historic Harbor Lighthouse, or at the California Welcome Center. There are discount military and group rates.

WORDS: KATIE LALICATA PHOTOS: CHRISTOPHER DONEZ Do you remember the first time music meant something to you? Like when you went to your first concert? Or maybe even the song that was playing when you met your first love? Music is sublime like that. It acts as a vessel in and out of life’s most memorable and intimate moments. Music radically shapes culture and benchmarks many specific moments in our lives. As music programs continue to get cut from our schools, there becomes a greater need for music exposure in the youth of our communities. Insert Coastal Music Studios here. From a dropoff home school program, to summer school drum circles, to lessons that range from piano to ukulele, and finally to their free children’s choir— Coastal Music Studios is a haven for creative musical expression. Owners Andy and Pam Allen are giving kids a connection to live music and creating opportunities to learn and perform. “We didn’t just want to build a business, we wanted to build a community,” said Andy. This vision of community pairs perfectly with the small town values of Oceanside and what this community is all about. This studio is not just bringing music to Oceanside—it’s doing much, much more. Music doesn’t just teach kids the skill of making sound, it also gives

them self esteem, discipline, and focus. “So many parents have reported to her many amazing areas of improvement in their kids since they began lessons,” explained Pam. The jewel of Coastal Music Studios is the free children’s choir. “Pam has always loved teaching kids choirs, so we wanted a part of our DNA to be giving back to the community,” said Andy with a smile as he looked at his wife and business partner Pam. The love and generosity between these two is palpable. For over six years, since the opening of Coastal Music Studios, a free children’s choir has been a part of the business, and an offering of their heart. “The reason we do this is because there’s no music in many schools and children who can’t afford lessons should have access to music,” said Andy. At the end of several months of rehearsal, the students get to perform their songs for a soldout show. The most incredibly beautiful part about this whole process is that all proceeds from these shows go to charities that serve children. This genius idea is based upon the concept of teaching kids that they can use their talents to change the world around them. Deeply woven into all aspects of life at Coastal Music way of life. SURFSIDE DENTAL WORDS: ALONDRA FIGUEROA PHOTOS: ZACH CORDNER

Have you heard of Surfside Dental? Maybe not, but this low-key staple in the Oceanside community has been servicing our residents since 1994. Years ago, I was lucky enough to try a new dentist and landed at Surfside Dental, where I met Dr. Michael McMahan and his amazingly sweet and patient staff. No one really likes going to the dentist and I am no different—like many of you, I get a bit nervous and hope that everything comes back “A okay” with no cavities and a clean, fresh mouth. Then I had to have a root canal, and for some reason, I panicked and avoided it. I missed appointments until McMahan’s diligent staff kept calling and coaxed me in. I’d never had that kind of procedure and was worried about the pain, the shots, the sensitivity afterwards, and the length of the procedure—did I mention the shots? When I went in, his all-female staff was so kind and understanding—they knew just how to make me feel comfortable. Then I met Dr. McMahan. He warmly welcomed me in and carefully explained the “ins and outs” of the whole thing. His unbelievable laid back and calm attitude instantly put me at ease—it was like magic! He talked me through it, and even used an amazing technique while giving the shots so they barely even hurt! Dr. McMahan first numbs the area with a gel and then he wiggles your cheek, and the next thing you know, you’re all numbed up and ready for your procedure. Honestly, it was the best dental experience I’d THEOSIDER.COM

ever had, and that’s why I have been a dedicated Surfside Dental client for the last thirteen years. Dr. McMahan is a homegrown Osider, his father served in the Marines and he attended Jefferson Middle School and then graduated from Oceanside High School. In fact, it was his charismatic science teacher at OHS, Mr. Collins, who really got him looking at science as an exciting possibility for a career. He met his lovely wife Elan while she attended El Camino High School, and they’ve been together ever since. Dr. McMahan shared that dentistry interested him as both a science and an art and it's worked well for him. I’d say so! He started his dental practice here in Oceanside in 1994 where he partnered with Dr. Jim Rosell. In 2013, due to consistent growth, he branched off on his own with Surfside Dental. Despite not advertising, his business has continued to grow mostly through word-of-mouth from happy patients. Don’t be surprised if you see Dr. McMahan surfing at the Oceanside Harbor or at Terramar in Carlsbad on the biggest longboard he can find. If you’re lucky, you can catch him playing bass with the Flying Mangoes at the Del Mar Fair. Be sure to catch their next show in Oceanside at the Sunset Market on March 28th! And if that’s not enough, he’s also played Principle Viola for the North Coast Symphony for the past twenty years! In his free time, he’s an avid traveler and has reached base camp Mt. Everest and has even climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro! 52

Owner, Dr. Michael McMahan

I have to mention that the offices are impeccably clean and beautiful. There’re big glossy TVs that allow you to see your dental exam results en vivo, or you can enjoy beautiful, serene scenes played from around the world to relax you while you wait. Worth another honorable mention are Dr. McMahan’s lovely long time staff members that always go out of their way at every turn to make your experience as pleasant as possible. When you’re looking for a dentist that has a superbly calm, laid back, and welcoming approach—be sure to look up Surfside Dental, and give them a chance to change your mind about going the dentist.

LP FISHING SUPPLY WORDS: JAMEY STONE  PHOTOS: ZACH CORDNER

Owner, Geoff Hunt

Like most coastal towns, fishing has always been a big part of the Oceanside community. I have many friends that work the local boats here in San Diego, and even more that fish recreationally in their spare time. What I didn’t understand is just how complex choosing the right gear can be. When I was a kid, it was only the major corporations making products. Now it seems that local fisherman have taken things into their own hands, making everything from custom lures, gaffs, and even lobster traps. Enter LP fishing supply. Located in the Oceanside Industrial complex just a quick threemile drive down the 76 Freeway from our harbor. Geoff Hunt has created a retail location that has everything you could ever imagine to accommodate your fishing needs. Geoff started fishing in 1995, and was quickly consumed by the lifestyle. He THEOSIDER.COM

soon began working on a commercial boat, where he fished everything from squid, lobster, crab, Sheepshead, and Sea Bass. In 2012, Geoff found the love of his life in his now wife Kristen and switched gears so he could spend more time at home with her. He started a small retail fishing business out of his garage where he built all types of fishing traps. Fast forward to 2015 and LP fishing Supply was born. Right when you walk in the door, you see that he sells everything from traps to trick and trout. With the fishing community so tight here in Oceanside, he started carrying locally sourced brands such as Reebes, Zucker, and Kill Fish, just to name a few. Whether you’re searching for that perfect pole, new waders, or a custom lobster trap—LP has you covered. Most importantly, Geoff can share his immense product knowledge to make 54

sure you get the right equipment for any type of fishing you’re getting into. He loves the Oceanside fishing community and how tight it is—in fact; he even started a hash tag to have group fishing meet-ups (#meetupandfish). So next time you need a new lure or have a question about fishing, go check out LP Fishing Supply and you’ll be sure to get a bite or two on your next adventure. Happy Fishing.

WHAT’S BREWING OSIDE?

LEGACY BREWING COMPANY WORDS: ERIC KLIER PHOTOS: ZACH CORDNER

There are over 150 breweries in San Diego County, so it can be hard to standout in such a large crowd. Legacy Brewing is doing just that by thinking out of the box and delivering great high quality beer with their own twist. Founder Mark Mericle has been brewing beer for more than 30 years and his drive and passion is felt within minutes of meeting him. In the late 80s, Mark opened Heritage Brewing Company in Orange County and met brewer Javier Avila, who’s still brewing with him and for Legacy to this day. They definitely have taken old THEOSIDER.COM

styles and shaped them their own way to bring traditional beers with a modern twist. One of these beers and one of their most popular is That Guava Beer—this beer has rich malt flavors, and a wonderful aroma from the fresh guavas used. It’s definitely a summer hit and easy drinking anytime of the year. Their most decorated beer 56

and a style that you don’t see very often is the Clan Ross Scotch Ale. This is an eight-percent monster with beautiful Carmel malt with a bit of spice on the end. This beer just keeps on winning awards, and after your first taste it—it’s easy to see why. Another incredible beer from Legacy is the Poseidon double IPA. This smooth beer

drinks like a single IPA, but is packed with Mosaic hops, which gives it a unique profile, unlike other doubles. Legacy Brewing is located right off the 76 Freeway in the old TransWorld Media building (the place where The Osider’s staff began their magazine journey) near the airport. They’re a tight knit group of friends and family, and you can sometimes even see Mark’s 92-year old father helping out. They just recently bought two new

30 barrels to boost production and give them some room to play around with different styles. Legacy also have marketing director Andrew Baer and event coordinator Titus Cannon dealing with social media and networking to spread the word. If you’re looking for great beer and you’re into trying out some new styles, it’d be in your best interest to checkout their tasting room and brewery and see what the buzz is all about!   57

EXHALE OCEANSIDE WORDS: KATIE LALICATA PHOTOS: ZACH CORDNER A little over five years ago in the parking lot where Exhale now stands, Chef Daniel Pundik and Restaurateur Gabe Hogan met for the first time. As Oceanside emerged on the map as a culinary hotbed, their first restaurant, Local Tap House & Kitchen, quickly became one of Oceanside’s favorites for locals and tourists alike. Once again, these two have merged their creative powers and brought you a second serving of the genius they can produce. Hogan and Pundik, Owner and Executive Chef, respectively, could have picked anywhere to open their second restaurant. So why did they choose Oceanside? It’s because of you. “We pinch ourselves every time we think about the local’s support. Exhale is one big ‘thank you’ to all of you who made it possible for us to continue to bring our dream to fruition,” said Hogan. The support of this community over the last five years of transformation and growth has allowed them to flourish. For them, Exhale is great because it’s an THEOSIDER.COM

opportunity to bring something different to Oceanside. It’s also an opportunity to serve food that represents the changing face of this community, while still catering to the locals that’ve been instrumental in that change. Before choosing a concept for Exhale, these two spent time doing research about what exists in this neighborhood, what exists out there in the culinary world, and ultimately what would best compliment the current vibe of Oceanside. This is their way of bringing next-level dining to this town. Here you’ll find wood-fired cuisine and classic Oaxacan flavors, effortlessly blended with modern cooking techniques and creative presentations. Evolving from the foundation of LTH & Kitchen Chef Daniel remarked, “We knew we wanted to be different from ourselves.” The front of the house is impeccable; a spacious design of high ceilings, garage style windows, and clean lines invites a balanced feeling of both casual and refined. The aesthetic 58

is a sophisticated simplicity that perfectly compliments the food and the maturing face of Oceanside. “The inspiration is fresh and simple,” said Chef Daniel. “We want to show off the protein as the star.” From the variety of tacos, to their rib-eye steak, to the wood grilled and butterflied Branzin, there’s a tremendous amount of love and detail put into every plate and every ingredient. The open kitchen lets the guests get a closer look at the care and hard work that goes into crafting food from the heart. With a new restaurant comes new potential, and Pundik and Hogan are excited to share with you a smart and innovative addition to the Oceanside food scene!

Located in the Target shopping center next to the new Winco grocery store, Board & Brew owners Clayton Wheeler and Craig Applegate opened for business in Oceanside in October of last year. Originally started back in 1979 in Del Mar by founder Tom Powers, Board & Brew has been a lunch staple for many years in North County. “Board & Brew is a Southern California sandwich shop that focuses primarily on sandwiches, salads, and craft beer. I think what’s made us so successful is quality, value, and our secret sauce,” said Clayton. Board & Brew’s interior space is heavily filled with 80s-era skateboards, complete with giant photo prints of legendary skate photographer Grant Brittain’s most iconic 80s skateboarding moments line the walls, with one entire section on their back wall featuring recycled skateboard decks cut into squares: “We partnered with this cool company called Art Of Board that makes the art out of recycled skateboard decks. We use them in every one of our stores in San Diego,” explained Wheeler. The menu at Board & Brew is filled with the ultimate in sandwich goodness. The Turkado is definitely the crowd favorite, and the Chicken THEOSIDER.COM

Cobb Salad

Club (my personal favorite), Baja Chicken, and Tom's Choice are also really popular. It’s easy to see why as each sandwich is unique, chock full of flavor, and made with the freshest ingredients. “We truly make every product in-house daily, so we put a lot of pride in our prep and our quality,” said Clayton. Board & Brew (as a brand with sixteen locations in SoCal) sold an estimated two million sandwiches in 2018! That’s a lot of sammies! If salads are your thing, then Board & Brew will do you a solid with their amazingly popular Cobb Salad. With eight to twelve beers on tap, Board & Brew features constantly rotating top local brands like Black Plague, Booze Brothers, Mother Earth, and they have a partnership with Artifex Brewing from San Clemente. Happy hour is from 3-6pm every day, and I can’t think of a better way to end the day than with a tasty sandwich and a nice, cold brew. 60

LOCAL FLAVOR

We started making the Crispy Avocado Grilled Cheese about four years ago. The idea was to feature avocado as the “protein,” but steering away from lime and cilantro. I think you’ll find the process fairly easy and both the tomato smash and kale pesto can be used in other applications like pasta, soup garnish, and cracker spread etc., so you might as well make a larger batch. It’s a surprisingly filling sandwich and pure comfort food. For me, it’s what California food is all about— using fresh ingredients, make it full of flavor, and enjoy with a local craft beer. —Chef Michael C. Brown
