SET IN STONE A WORD FROM THE PUBLISHER

They say life is way too short so make the most out of every moment possible. I couldn’t agree more. This is why this time of year is so special to most. I love the spring and summer months so much more than wintertime mainly because of the time change. Those extra hours of light allow us to have bonus time in the evening to enjoy the activities we love most after a long workday. Whether it’s surfing, golf, basketball, soccer, bird watching, or whatever floats your boat, the extra afternoon time affords us these important moments in life. But most importantly, it allows time to gather with friends and THEOSIDER.COM

enjoy the almighty “Happy Hour.” Oceanside has no shortage of options for that either. So we felt it was time to shine a light on a few of the many great options on offer here in this month’s feature story. We hand picked twelve great ways to enjoy a cold beverage and great eats at an affordable price in a great atmosphere. Each one offers something different, and we urge you to try them all over the course of the summer months ahead. We also have an amazing photo feature called “Springtime in Oceanside” that showcases the amazing colors of spring in San Diego’s favorite City. So enjoy the 6

extra daylight and top off your day with some great food, cold drink, and good times at your local Happy Hour spot. It should also be noted that this is our 5th anniversary issue, as we launched our first issue back in May 2014. Five years ago? Time does fly! A huge thank you goes out to all our valued readers and advertisers for all your support over the years—we couldn’t have done this without you guys. Cheers!

STEEL MILL COFFEE WORDS: AARON SCHMIDT PHOTOS: ZACH CORDNER

Located at 605 Mission Avenue, Steel Mill Coffee officially opened for business in February of 2019. It’s owned and operated by a tight group of friends—Shea Cooper, Dana Trippe, Chris Balingit, Lannie Rhoades, Justin Figueroa, and Riley Hawk—who all came together for the common good to create an amazing space for all to enjoy. Originally from Boise, Idaho, Shea is the ringleader of the crew and has been in the coffee business for around ten years. “Steel Mill is a communal space where all of us friends came together to take everything that we’re into—we all put little pieces of it together—to create not necessarily just a ‘coffee shop,’ but a place where we all feel comfortable to hang out. Hopefully, everyone feels the same way we do,” explained Shea. Steel Mill Coffee is a traditional coffee shop that just so happens to sell vinyl records as they have a modest collection of eclectic records from the most obscure bands from the 60s, 70s, and 80s to choose from. “Riley and I are both record heads and everybody involved with Steel Mill is really into music—it’s one of the things we all have in common. He’s consistently hitting up all kinds of record swaps and he has a huge vinyl THEOSIDER.COM

collection,” said Shea. “We’ve always talked about wanting to open a shop, but we never really wanted to do a full on record store. This is a perfect way to combine the two; where we can still sell coffee, and have a very small selection of niche music.” When it comes to coffee, Steel Mill exclusively only sells James Coffee Company. “We want to eventually get to roasting our own coffee, but for the time we’re just happy with them. We’re good friends with the owner David Kennedy, and it’s just really fun working with a coffee company that we’re fans of and also friends with,” smiled Shea. Popular menu items include Loose Leaf Tea, Cappuccinos, Mochas, Cortados, cold brews, and they intend to add different specialty drinks as time goes on. The most popular coffee item is espresso and their Steel Mill Coffee logo t-shirts for sale are pretty darn sweet looking, too. If you get the chance, make sure to stop by and grab yourself a coffee. And then while you’re there, go ahead and buy that one favorite record of yours that you’ve always looked for but could never find. This place is awesome!

BOYS & GIRLS CLUB OF OCEANSIDE GET READY FOR SUMMER FUN WORDS: PROMISE YEE PHOTOS: RENORDO BOWEN Longer summer days mean more time to play, learn, and grow at the Boys & Girls Club of Oceanside. This year’s summer sessions will engage kids in rocket launches, a self-created extreme water obstacle course, building solar ovens, and other unforgettable learning experiences. Weekly summer sessions will explore modes of transportation, the Wild West, extreme summer games, water adventures, and other fun themes. “Summer campers walk into a high-energy, funfilled environment,” said Jodi Diamond, Chief Executive Officer of the Boys & Girls Clubs of THEOSIDER.COM

24

Oceanside. Days begin with whole group participation in songs and team building activities. Then boys and girls work on hands-on problem-solving activities in smaller groups. While kids are having a blast, they’re also warding off summer learning loss. “More than half of the achievement gap between lower and higher income youth can be explained by unequal access to summer learning opportunities,” explained Diamond. Engaging summer session activities expand kids’ thinking and keep their minds sharp. The Boys & Girls Club of Oceanside has been inspiring, developing minds and character, and enriching the lives of local kids for 67 years. Year-round programs focus on academics, values, and community leadership. “We serve 1,400 youth a day in grades kindergarten through   25

high school,” Diamond said. The Boys & Girls Club provides a safe place for kids to build their confidence and stay mentally stimulated. After-school and school break programs offer project-based STREAM activities, which engage kids in exploring science, technology, research, engineering, arts, and math. The Wellness Warriors program teaches kids healthy lifestyle practices through fitness challenges, team sports, and cooking activities. Kids also make long-lasting friendships, learn lots of new things, and take local field trips.

Oceanside Merchants baseball team in the Escondido versus Oceanside tournament, 1928.

TEN

THINGS YOU DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT BASEBALL’S HISTORY IN OCEANSIDE

Baseball has been known as America’s favorite pastime for well over a century. Its popularity was evident even in Oceanside’s earliest years, as residents came together to play nine innings on an open field in the 1880s. It’s no wonder that Oceanside has had its share of gifted players from Little League to the Major League.

WORDS: KRISTI HAWTHORNE  PHOTOS COURTESY OF OCEANSIDE HISTORICAL SOCIETY

Oceanside Merchants, 1913.

1.

Games between other communities provided free entertainment and friendly competition. While the first baseball games might have been just for fun, the rivalries became serious business and a team of skilled players to represent Oceanside was sought after. The September 21, 1888 South Oceanside Diamond noted that “A baseball nine has been organized for the purpose of beating the Escondido Club.” Later, townsfolk were urged to come and support the home team with an announcement that read: “Oceanside versus Buena Big-Foot Nine at Oceanside ground Saturday at 2pm. Everybody Attend!”

2.

By the turn of the century, Oceanside had a well-rounded team. They played and won against teams down the coast and inland, even as far away as San Diego. On Thanksgiving Day in 1907, the Oceanside team embarrassed the Del Mar team with a score of 34 to 4.

3.

In or around 1911, the local baseball team was called the Oceanside Merchants, and they were just that—local store and business owners who were serious about baseball. They were good enough to compete with minor league teams from Los Angeles, and in July of 1911 the Merchants “defeated decisively” the Los Angeles Grays in front of a home crowd.

4.

Franz Hosp, 1909.

THEOSIDER.COM

Between about 1910 and 1927, games were played on a field along South Hill Street (now Coast Highway) between Michigan and Missouri Streets. However, the field was in jeopardy in 1913 when A.W. Gardner purchased a lot within the field of play, and was ready to build a house right “on home plate.” The newspaper decried the development and declared: “Citizens of Oceanside, you should see that your progeny are at once provided with new and suitable grounds. Baseball comes next to the flag in the estimation of our children.” Apparently, the crisis was averted when ball grounds were moved just to the south and games went on uninterrupted. 30

5.

Local baseball was played all year long, but the winter season brought back hometown hero Franz Hosp from the “big leagues.” Hosp was recruited from Oceanside to play in the minor leagues with the San Diego Pickwicks, and then he went on to pitch for several “coast league teams,” including Seattle, Oakland, Los Angeles, and Salt Lake. Hosp made the major leagues when he played for the Cincinnati Nationals. He died in 1928 in a car accident on the 101 just north of Oceanside, and his obituary spoke of his fame: “Franz Hosp was a great hero with the local baseball fans before his entry into his professional career as a pitcher, as he made the local team practically invincible. Happy Hosp was a great favorite with the baseball public and doubtless was the most widely known person ever identified with Oceanside.”

6.

In about 1925, the ball field was moved to an area just south of Wisconsin Street at South Tremont Street, east of the railroad tracks. Lionel Van Deerlin remembered: “They’d have a game every Sunday at a diamond about Wisconsin Street. The ground rules were that if a ball was hit over the railroad tracks it was a grounds rule double. This was because it assumed a train might stop somebody from going after the ball. Of course, if you hit a ball over the railroad tracks it was far enough that anybody who wasn’t on one leg could get a home run out of it anyhow.”

7.

Another ball field in the late 1930s and early 1940s was located on the west side of the 900-block of North Hill Street (Coast Highway). In 1939, Recreation Park was built—a rather impressive adobe wall built at a cost of $16,000, enclosed the 8.3-acre recreational park (later expanded to twelve acres) along Mission Avenue between Brooks and Barnes Streets. It included a baseball diamond, racetrack, and football field, complete with dressing rooms, bleachers, and floodlights for evening games.

JC Little League team, 1966.

Chris Chambliss, 1967.

10. Playin' baseball at Oceanside High, 1926.

8.

In 1941, famed baseball manager Connie Mack brought his major league team, the Philadelphia A’s, to Oceanside. Mack, a true baseball legend, managed the A’s from 1901 until 1950, when he retired at the age of 87. Mack was looking for new prospects for his team, while training at Oceanside’s Recreation Park.

9.

One of the most famous professional baseball players from Oceanside is Chris Chambliss. Chris and his brothers attended Oceanside High School, where they all played baseball. After he graduated from Oceanside

High, Chris Chambliss went to MiraCosta College, then UCLA, and then made his way to the Major Leagues in 1970, and was selected American League Rookie of the Year in 1971. He was traded to the New York Yankees in 1974 where he became known as the Royal Killer. He had the highest batting average in his career (.321) against the Kansas City Royals and crushed their World Series hopes in 1976 with a ninth inning home run. Other notable Major League players from Oceanside High School include Thad Bosley, Lee Guetterman, Jon Hotta, Bobby Shore, Aaron Siliga, and Gary Thomasson.   31

Since the 1950s, Little League teams in Oceanside have been sponsored by a variety of Oceanside businesses and organizations. In 2001, Oceanside’s Little League Team made it all the way to Williamsport, Pennsylvania to play in the Little League World Series Tournament. Teammates included Bobby Shore, Johnny Jimenez, Josh Klimek, Thomas Eukovich, along with Matthew Cerda, who’d eventually go on to play in the MLB. Their World Series dream was dashed when an umpire blew a call, and they were knocked out of the semifinals. In addition, it was later discovered that the opposing team’s pitcher was fourteen (rather than twelve years old) and therefore should have been disqualified. Despite the loss, Oceanside’s Little League Team came back as Hometown Heroes cementing themselves into our baseball history. Home grown TAESJA PAOPAO WORDS: KATIE LALICATA PHOTO: ZACH CORDNER

Hard work, leadership, and humility—that’s what our homegrown stars are made of. Taesja PaoPao is an Oceanside High School senior, talented athlete, and all around good kid who’s earned herself these titles and some bragging rights for her family and this town. With her gentle, modest demeanor she’s not one to boast, however, her presence in the box and lethal goalie skills do much of the talking for her. “I’ve always been a shy kid,” explained Taesja, “but when I’m on the field—it goes away, I’m not shy at all.” If the quality of youth are any representation of the future of a community, then Oceanside should be proud to claim this young lady as it’s own. Off the field, she likes to spend time walking on the beach and studying for her favorite subject: Calculus. A life long athlete, THEOSIDER.COM

she’s participated in many sports from boxing to swimming, but she stuck with soccer and it has paid off. Taesja has received a scholarship to play soccer from UC Irvine starting this fall 2019. Her major is undeclared, but she’s both excited and nervous for the continued challenge on the field and in the classroom. Much of her success she contributes to her wonderfully supportive family and God. These relationships she says “have helped me through everything.” Her poise, and soft-spoken strength are evident in the way she carries herself. In addition to playing for Oceanside High School, she’s the Team Captain and goalkeeper of the U18 travel team, the Oceanside Breakers. As Taesja prepares to embark on the next phase of her life, this community, her family, 32

her team, and her faith are all pillars that have created a solid foundation for her. Despite the challenges and added pressures of balancing academic and athletics, Taesja finds a way to excel by knowing her priorities. The chemistry and sisterhood of her club team, as well as the unconditional love and support of her tight knit family drive her to succeed. She looks up to her cousins, and other family members. With the hopes of following in a few of their footsteps, she humbly confessed: “It’d be nice to make it to the pro’s one day. That’s definitely one of my goals.” Many of her qualities are those you’ll find represented in successful athletes across the globe. Although the future remains unseen, if Taesja continues along the path she’s on she’ll one day join their ranks!

HOW TO MAKE AHI POKE WITH EXECUTIVE CHEF LUIS LOPEZ SR. OF THE LIGHTHOUSE OYSTER BAR & GRILL PHOTOS: ZACH CORDNER

This is a little O’side version of our favorite Hawaiian-style Ahi Poke (Luis Jr.’s recipe) made with local Ahi, sesame oil, Shoyu, Green onion, Maui Sweet onion, and Sriracha. Our poke recipes are inspired by our Hawaiian roots, and we always use fresh ingredients. We always welcome the idea of using Salmon, Albacore, Crab, or Tako (if available) to build your own version. Upstairs in our restaurant, we serve our poke in a “taco” version. Our chefs prepare wonton taco shells, stuff them with poke, and then it’s topped with an Asian-style coleslaw, Wasabi Aoli, and Seaweed Salad. When purchasing poke in our fish market, you can get it served over white rice or in a custom poke bowl. Don’t forget to ask for Hawaiian furikake!—Luis Lopez Jr. THEOSIDER.COM

ARTS

OCEANSIDE CULTURAL DISTRICT ORIGINAL. ACTIVE. ECLECTIC WORDS: ELIZABETH SCHWARTZE  PHOTOS: ZACH CORDNER Oceanside has created a truly authentic culture, and the tireless efforts of the Oceanside arts community recently received well-deserved recognition. The original, active, and eclectic culture that permeates Oceanside is now an official designation by the California Arts Council. In 2017, Oceanside was named one of fourteen California Cultural Districts. With the adoption of state legislation, California Cultural Districts were created by the California Arts Council. Oceanside is one of fourteen inaugural designated districts dispersed throughout the majestic state. The California Arts Council defines a cultural district as “a welldefined geographic area with a high concentration of cultural resources and activities.” It’s no surprise that Oceanside was chosen as one of the first cultural districts because our dynamic city has it all! Oceanside is home to an iconic pier, world-class theatres, a picturesque harbor, a state of the art museum, a surf museum, its very own artist’s alley, renowned tattoo parlors, symbolic library, amazing local music, and a THEOSIDER.COM

50

unequivocal restaurant/craft brew scene. The original-active-eclectic vibe is an overarching theme amongst all those enterprising artistic elements that forms Oceanside’s authentic culture. The partnership between the Oceanside Public Library, the City of Oceanside Arts Commission, the Oceanside Museum of Art, Visit Oceanside, and MainStreet Oceanside created a springboard to apply for the designation, and showcase the robust culture of our authentic beach community. These partners created an eleven-person steering committee comprised of Oceanside locals from different backgrounds, building a powerful collaboration. The steering committee is currently working on a business toolkit and a premiere event for 2020 that’ll showcase local talent. The designation is prestigious and Oceanside’s Principal Librarian CJ Di Mento is excited about the opportunity it presents to the city. “This came from the very best place, and seeing how hard our artists are working, I wanted to find ways to further support these people that are doing such amazing

work. Artists should be artists and we should support them as a community to make them successful. It’s for the entire community.” Oceanside is taking great strides to keep our culture intact, while also elevating the city. It’s a fine balance, but the leaders in the community understand what’s at stake. If Oceanside loses its path, or its identity, then there’s no culture to promote and preserve.

MainStreet Oceanside knows firsthand what’s at stake. Downtown Oceanside has gone from a less-than-desirable area to what is now—a thriving destination. “MainStreet Oceanside continues to thrive to improve our downtown programs and events. Our programing is a reflection of our community as we connect our locals to our business community. We don’t want to change Oceanside character, but embrace our diverse   51

community, which creates our unique culture. We listen to our surrounding neighborhoods and adapt to the changes that need to be made within our organization,” stated Gumaro Escarega, MainStreet Program Manager. Stay tuned for the new Oceanside Cultural District logo, banners, freeway signs, and signature event in 2020!

REFORM LIFE WORDS: JAMEY STONE PHOTOS: CHRISTOPHER DONEZ

When I first met Reform Life’s owner Ryan Minarik, he was working in the electronics field and neck deep in the corporate grind. You know the deal: Working long hours, meeting after meeting, and answering to the spreadsheet overlords. As many of us can attest to firsthand, this kind of life can be very good for your bank account, but horrible for your mind, health, and body. So Ryan did what most of us only dream of doing—he made a change from financial security to chasing his passions in hopes of personal fulfillment. Ryan quit his job, purchased a VW Westfalia, and got lost to find his true path. Enter Reform Life. Reform Life is just what the name implies. It’s all about reforming your health, taking care of the planet and everything around us. Like most start ups, he began his business from his garage right here in Oceanside. One of his first products on offer was the Rooftop tent, and from there he focused on making environmentally friendly high quality products, such as reusable grocery bags, THEOSIDER.COM

titanium straws, multi-tools, dinnerware, and doormats—all made from sustainable materials. Everything Reform Life offers in its product line has the environment and our impact on the planet in mind. If we can decrease our carbon footprint with the little everyday items that we take for granted, the world will be in better shape for future generations. Reform Life is currently an “online only” business and his site’s partnered with Amazon. The next phase is to start working with local like-minded retailers who share his same passion for protecting our planet. Give him a view at Reformlife.com and if you like what he is up to, make a purchase—you won’t be disappointed, and neither will the planet and our future generations.

D.A.V. OCEANSIDE WORDS: ALYSON KLIER PHOTOS: CHRISTOPHER DONEZ The Oceanside branch of the Disabled American Veterans Thrift Stores, or known simply as the “D.A.V.” to locals, has been an unofficial landmark of south Oceanside for over 40 years. A bustling warehouse chock full of something for everyone, the D.A.V. is always stocked to the roof with everything from furniture, clothing, household items, toys, jewelry, books, antiques, electronics, and so much more. D.A.V. Industries is a non-profit corporation that provides relief and assistance to Disabled American Veterans and their dependents. The D.A.V. assists veterans in San Diego County through the sale of donated items, which directly support several programs, such as The Transportation Program, The VA Health Center of La Jolla, and Department of Service Officers that help disabled veterans better their physical, social, and mental conditions. In addition to these programs, the D.A.V. also supports other local charities, such as Meals on Wheels, the American Cancer Society, and Elizabeth Hospice, who in turn, provide assistance to veterans and their families in San Diego County. The Oceanside branch of the D.A.V. opened at its current location on Coast Highway in 1978, providing Oceanside residents the opportunity to buy lightly used items for low prices, while helping our local veterans who need assistance—a true shopping win-win for our community! The Oceanside location sees over 10,500 customers each month, and has around 25 employees that work hard to keep the machine running every day. They sort through the thousands of donated items and make sure the items put out for resale are still of good quality. The Disabled American Veterans Thrift Stores are completely non-profit and do not receive any government aid. All sales serve the disabled veterans in San Diego County, as well as support their overhead and all expenses. THEOSIDER.COM

The D.A.V. provides an additional service to the community through their donation pick-up program, which is incredibly easy to take advantage of and clear out your unused or unneeded items. The extensive list of items you can donate can be found on their website and they even accept vehicle donations. Knowing your used items will go on to provide such amazing support for our veterans and our community makes it even better to donate! The pick-up service is free and easy to set up by calling their toll free number listed below. You can also drop donations off at the back of the store during business hours Monday through Sunday. The variety and volume of items you can find at our local D.A.V. is really amazing, if you’ve never been before you should make it a priority. Once you see the treasures that can be found there, it’ll become one of your “go-to” shops in Oceanside—just as it’s been for so many people in our community for so many years! 54

WHAT’S BREWING OSIDE?

BELCHING BEAVER BREWERY OCEANSIDE WORDS: ERIC KLIER PHOTOS: ZACH CORDNER

Summer is right around the corner, and with the influx of tourists our economy grows—and so does the thriving beer industry. At the forefront of this movement is Belching Beaver Brewery. With their fun attitude and absolutely amazing beer, they have become a major force in the San Diego beer scene. Starting in 2012, Belching Beaver has grown to have multiple tasting rooms, a large tavern, and now a large brew house here in Oceanside with dozens of beer on draft. One of my favorites beers is the IPA Phantom Bride—it’s collaboration with the band The Deftones and it has a perfect mix of hops and a citrus flavor that’s unbelievably drinkable and smooth. One of their most popular beers, and for good reasons, is the delicious Me So Honey Blonde. This honey blonde ale is not too sweet and very well balanced and at 5.5-percent, it’s easy to enjoy a THEOSIDER.COM

few. Belching Beaver’s best selling beer is the Peanut Butter Milk Stout and it definitely caused a major fuss when was first released. This beer has a great coffee and chocolate flavor with a light roasted peanut flavor that’s absolutely awesome. Although dark in color, it drinks like a light beer and is also a great conversation piece. One of the best things about this brewery— besides the amazing beer—are the people that work there. Brewer Peter Perrecone was kind enough to tell us about the brewing process and the pride they put into each and every batch, while sales representative Andy Coppock gave a thorough description of all the beers and the different unique styles each one has and we saw the amazing new canning system and the tasting room at the brew house to make it a very educational and impressive tour. If you like great beer and great people, then going to Belching Beaver is a must. It’s just a few miles down Oceanside Boulevard, so it’s an easy destination for all you beer heads out there. COME ON OVER CAFE WORDS: ELIZABETH SCHWARTZE PHOTOS: PRISCILLA IEZZI Authentic. Oceanside has created a niché with that one-word description for everything awesome that originates here. And true to form, Come On Over Cafe continues the tradition of authenticity. Come On Over Cafe is a family-owned cafe business nestled in an unexpected industrial road off Oceanside Boulevard. The owners are an aunt & niece team that consists of Andrea Hiles and Chase McCarthy. The ladies have put their heart and soul into making Come On Over Cafe delectable, friendly, and welcoming. On December 1, 2017, the team took over a quaint cafe that shared a space with Conover Tires. For the last year and a half, they’ve worked hard to figure out the restaurant business and it seems as though they’re succeeding in their endeavor because their customers and five-star reviews are accumulating. It probably helps that they know their customers and strived for an “Oceanside vibe” when decorating, including featuring local artists on the walls. There’s indoor seating, a beautifully built deck for outdoor eating where pets are welcome, and an upstairs meeting/ study room that can be reserved. Many customers “stumble upon” Come On Over Cafe when in the area for car maintenance. Andrea boasts that their patrons are always pleasantly surprised that there’s a cafe and that the food and coffee is delicious. She also reports that the men and women that work in the area are some of her best customers. Andrea and Chase have sought out local businesses to provide their coffee and breads; which makes everything they serve super fresh. All menu items are made from scratch, and the cookies are baked fresh every morning. Come On Over Cafe’s most popular food items are classic fare—the Breakfast Bagel, Turkey BLT, Tuna Melt, and the Veggie Panini. The Veggie Panini can also be made vegan and THEOSIDER.COM

Veggie Panini

includes fire roasted peppers, pepperoncini, red onions, sun dried tomatoes, pickles, cheese, pesto, and avocado on locally sourced sourdough bread. Not be missed are their flavorful coffees. They source their coffee from local roaster Libra Coffee, which not only provides a great cup of coffee, but also helps create decadent coffee drinks, such as their Caramel Macchiato. The ladies are proud that they’re self-taught restaurateurs: “We figured it out for ourselves and had a lot of fun doing it. We’re in a good spot now and watching our business grow. It’s rewarding,” said Andrea with a smile. For the future, Andrea and Chase plan to offer beer that’ll pair nicely with their delicious and fresh sandwiches. They also plan to make their own almond and oat milks; and for the summer—fresh squeezed lemonade. Come On Over Cafe welcomes everyone to their authentic cafe. They’re closed Sundays and Mondays, but ready to serve customers fantastic food and coffee with a smile bright and early at 7:30am on Tuesday through Saturday. 58

SEÑOR GRUBBY’S WORDS: AARON SCHMIDT  PHOTOS: ZACH CORDNER

Al Pastor & Pork Belly Tacos and Pomegranate Margarita

Situated at 311 North Tremont Street, the new Señor Grubby’s opened up for business last April by owners Raschelle Everett and Justin Jachura. Since then, it’s been well received by the local community as people are stoked. The original Señor Grubby’s opened in Carlsbad in July 2008 and with the new Oceanside location, there are now two locations to get your taco fix. Owner Justin Jachura started his quest for the perfect taco early on in life and has been dedicated to it ever since. From 2007 to 2012, he owned Grubby’s Diner in Oceanside, and he also owns two Los Tacos in North County. “Growing up and making trips down to TJ, I’d hit up their street taco vendors and then in Baja, Ensenada, I’d get fish tacos. At the time, there was nothing here in North County like that. So a group of friends and I got together in 2005 and we were like, ‘We should bring legit street tacos to our community.’ There were a few places that served them, but no one was really doing Al Pastor—you know, the good stuff,” said Juchara. Señor Grubby’s new space is warm and inviting with roll-up door windows and a skylight that provides tons of light. It feels very wide open and airy, which is awesome if you want to kick back with some breathing room after a hard day at work. The staff is super friendly and service is pretty quick, which is especially nice if you’re hungry and ready for a cold one. They serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner and with so much amazing food on their menu, you’re sure to find THEOSIDER.COM

something that suits your fancy. A local favorite on their breakfast menu has got to be hands down the Country Grubby breakfast burrito, and it’s definitely one of their proudest creations, as you’ll come to discover when you take a big bite out of one. “It’s basically Chicken Fried Steak, eggs, hash browns, and gravy all rolled up into a big ass burrito,” laughed Justin. The breakfast papas and Chilaquiles Con Carnitas are also very popular and will satisfy any hungry belly thrown at them. Señor Grubby’s makes everything in-house, too, which is a mega plus. The most popular lunch and dinner items served are Al Pastor tacos and their carne asada burritos are unbeatable. The Pork Belly tacos are to die for and you should probably have two orders of them to make sure you’re completely satisfied. They also have a great salsa bar. From red sauces, green sauces, pickled carrots and roasted jalapenos, everything you need for a successful salsa mission is right there in front of you. A “go to” for Taco Tuesdays, Señor Grubby’s has six beers on tap, a modest wine selection, and some of the best craft cocktails in town—the Pomegranate Margarita is so tasty that we ordered a few of them just to make sure they passed our impromptu Margarita Test. And yes, they passed with flying colors. If you’re into eating some authentic street tacos or you’re just looking to get some quality food in a super relaxing spot, then Señor Grubby’s is the place for you. 60

DINING: VALLEY

PHO HOUSE WORDS: KATIE LALICATA PHOTOS: DANIELLE JACKSON

Chung Nguyen is enthusiastic about life. His smile is as large, generous, and as welcoming as his energy. After knowing Chung for just a short while, it’s clear that the food he’s serving at Pho House is infused with all this love. Pho House is so much more than a restaurant—it’s a family establishment and extension of their family to yours. After growing up in Long Beach ten years ago, Nguyen’s father found a perfect location for their restaurant. Cozily tucked in a small shopping center off Mission Avenue (just west of El Camino Real), their location is hidden in plain sight. The unassuming restaurant front is a deceiving contrast to the nurturing food and warmth you’ll find inside. Falling in love with the town of Oceanside, the Nguyen’s embarked upon a family business adventure. “We love Oceanside,” said Chung, “People have been so nice, and we’ve never had any problems.” Inspired by her father and brother and wanting to deepen their family business, Chung’s sister Linh has since graduated college and joined their forces. What’s so special about Pho House is not just the food—it’s the feeling you get while you’re there. The dining room is comfortable, and the service is genuine and hospitable. A small water feature flows near the register, and the feeling of THEOSIDER.COM

home quickly wraps you up. The menu displays a variety of traditional Vietnamese dishes created and prepared by Chung and his father. One of the main items on the menu is Pho—huge bowls of homemade rice noodles, varying from meatfilled to vegetarian options. Pho in Vietnam is often served as breakfast because they believe it both fills and warms you, but here at Pho House, you can order it any time of day. In addition, the menu offers a variety of traditional plates, spring rolls, and rice dishes. Also worth mentioning is their coffee. If you have never tried Vietnamese coffee, the sweet savory balance of one of these treats is sure to keep you thinking about it long after it’s been sucked down. Chung beamed as he served up a glass full of love (and caffeine) with a large glowing smile. “Jet fuel,” he happily chirped. Perhaps this is one of the secret gems of Vietnamese cuisine. Pho House’s intention is to serve good food with fresh ingredients and a whole lot of love. Oceanside is home to the Nguyen’s, and they’d love to extend their home here at Pho House to you. Whether you’re a Pho connoisseur, or if you’ve never had Vietnamese noodles in your life—you’ll be welcomed into their doors, and you’ll leave feeling satisfied from your belly to your heart. 62
