A WORD FROM THE PUBLISHER

It’s September, and for most people it means fall is here, but for all of us Osiders it means that it’s finally “local’s summer.” We have endured the crowded beaches; long wait times at our local establishments, and the ever-menacing hunt for a decent parking spot. Now it’s our turn to enjoy all that Oceanside has to offer without the extra flow of people buzzing around town. Local's summer is the best and that’s exactly why we do our THEOSIDER.COM

annual Oside Flavor food event this time of year. Last year, we had an amazing turnout. We raised a solid amount of revenue for the Oceanside Boardriders Club and fun was had by all. What better place to enjoy all that Oceanside has to offer than Goat Hill Park? This year, we will be raising money for Oceanside High School and El Camino High School’s photography scholarships. Make sure to get your ticket to Oside 8

GREEN O

CHOOSE TO BE   DISPOSABLE-FREE

The City’s Green Oceanside team invites you to be a part of Oceanside’s “Be Disposable-Free” Campaign. Take the pledge today at www.GreenOceanside.org. Up to 80-percent of plastic in our oceans comes from land-based sources. With an increasing number of single-use items polluting our oceans and waterways, taking action against plastic pollution has been more important than ever. Be a part of the movement by taking the pledge to ditch disposables and take action against plastic pollution

THEOSIDER.COM

through the use of reusable items. Since the start of the campaign in July, the Green Oceanside team (along with numerous volunteers), received pledges to be disposable-free from over 1,000 residents, visitors, employees, and stakeholders. Many of these pledges were taken at community events, MainStreet farmer’s markets, and pop-up events at Green Oceanside businesses such as The Loose Leaf Tea Bar and Knockout Pizza. Although summer may

16

be ending, the campaign for a disposable-free Oceanside is just beginning. With children going back to school and summer activities dwindling down, you can take action against plastic pollution by making simple swaps throughout your daily routines. Whether it be at home, school, or even at work, teachers, students, and their families can make a big difference with their daily actions and keep Oceanside healthy, clean, and beautiful for generations to come.

HOW CAN YOU BE DISPOSABLE FREE? •

ZERO WASTE LUNCH KIT: Choose to use a zero waste lunch kit at work, school, or just on the go! Instead of single-use baggies, opt for a reusable sandwich and snack baggie along with a reusable container. Add a refillable water bottle and reusable utensils and you’re good to go! Not only will you save money in the long run, but your planet will thank you as well.

SCHOOL OR OFFICE SUPPLIES: Choose to reuse school supplies from the previous school year, or even create a supply swap with friends, family, peers, or coworkers.

RECYCLED FASHION: When adding to your closet for the school year, purchase clothing from local thrift shops! These clothes have a ton of life left, and with your help, you can ensure they don’t end up in a landfill. If you’re cleaning out your closet, choose to donate your clothing to local nonprofits or give them to a friend or loved one.

AT HOME: Reduce, Reuse, Rethink, Recycle! While grocery shopping or even cooking dinner, make conscious decisions to purchase items with the least amount of packaging. Don’t forget to repurpose your leftovers and recycle what you can!

TRANSPORTATION: Make it a goal to walk, ride your bike, or use public transportation at least once a week when commuting to work or school. Don’t forget your reusable water bottle! On your route, bring a litterbag and make it a goal to pick up three pieces of litter every day.

MAKE YOUR STATEMENT HEARD Post your actions for a plastic-free lifestyle on social media and hashtag #GreenOceanside, #BeDisposableFree, #HowDoYouOside, and #ZeroWaste. Take the Be Disposable-Free Pledge and give the City you input on how Oceanside can reduce litter and address single-use plastic at www.GreenOceanside.org. For more information on the City's environmental programs or to contact the Green Oceanside team e-mail GreenOceanside@ oceansideca.org, visit www.GreenOceanside. org, or download the Green Oceanside App by searching Green Oceanside in the app store.   17

RYAN KEIM

OCEANSIDE’S NEWEST COUNCIL MEMBER WORDS: ELIZABETH SCHWARTZE  PHOTO: ZACH CORDNER

Oceanside’s newest council member, Ryan Keim, has made Oceanside’s public safety his life goal. From the beaches and pools of Oceanside in his youth, to the streets of Oceanside as a police officer, and to the unanimous appointment to Oceanside City Council in January 2019—Keim is a genuine public servant. Valiantly assuming his role as an advocate, partnered with a career in service, Keim is dedicated to Oceanside, making him one of Oceanside’s Finest. Life in Oceanside began for him at a young age where he attended local schools. After graduating from California State University, San Marcos with a degree in Political Science, Keim served on the Police and Fire Commission until he joined the Oceanside Police Department (OPD). In 2006, he medically retired from the police force, but quickly assumed the role of Public Information Officer for the OPD. Keim received a great opportunity to be the Public Affairs Director for San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, working under Sheriff Bill Gore. With an education in political science and a background of public service, government is a natural fit. Due to a new policy in Oceanside,

council member candidates are required to live within their district. Therefore, a seat was vacated by Esther Sanchez with two years left on the term. City Council decided to fill the seat, and after applications were reviewed, Ryan Keim was

“My goal is to always represent the best of Oceanside, because I’ll always be here” on the short-list for each seated council member. A move to appoint Keim was “seconded” and unanimously passed at the January 9, 2019 council meeting. An avid surfer, Ryan loves being in the water with the same pals he’s known all his life. His friends are small business owners, teachers, and public servants—the same kids that surfed with Keim are now grown men and women working together to make Oceanside its finest. In his role as a city council member, he prioritizes

public safety (including homelessness, a problem he handled for years as a police officer), and fiscal responsibility. Environmentally, he looks forward to working together and finding a solution to keep sand on our beaches. “I have never been as optimistic about the city as I am now,” stated Keim. Ryan is accessible, and his background has taught him to listen and find viable solutions. “I want to make all residents succeed,” he boasted. “And validating someone, sometimes just by listening, accomplishes so much.” His congenial council aide Janene Shepherd helps him with his busy schedule. If invited, he also willingly attends neighborhood meetings to get accurate information to the residents first-hand. “I know how hard everyone is working to make Oceanside the best place it can be. I’m grateful to be a part of it as a police officer, and now, as a city council member,” said Keim. As an Oceanside resident with his wife Ivy and his daughter Charlotte, Ryan and his family usually can be found enjoying the Oceanside Harbor. “My goal is to always represent the best of Oceanside, because I’ll always be here.”

(L to R): Beach Safety Officers Veronica Velasquez and Chandra Faist

BEACH SAFETY OFFICERS CHANDRA FAIST AND VERONICA VELASQUEZ WORDS: PROMISE YEE  PHOTOS: ZACH CORDNER As soon as Memorial Day marks the beginning of the summer season, a cheer can be heard along Oceanside beaches: “Hurray, the white shirts are back!” Residents shout out a welcome and thank you to Beach Safety Officers who provide extra eyes on crowds from late May to early September. The non-sworn officers enforce beach regulations, such as no smoking; no alcohol, no dogs, and no overhead casting on the pier, so sworn officers can focus on more urgent beach calls. “We take the small stuff off the plates of sworn officers, so they can handle the big stuff,” Beach Safety Officer Chandra Faist said. They also write up daily reports and testify in court as needed. In addition to enforcing beach rules, safety officers serve as police department liaisons. The non-sworn officers do not carry guns, and are viewed as more approachable than sworn officers. “Building positive community relations is one of the greatest rewards of the job. Residents appreciate us so much,” said Faist. “Kids run up to us, give us hugs, and get stickers.” Faist has worked as a Beach Safety Officer for nine years, and partnered with THEOSIDER.COM

Veronica Velasquez for the last seven years. Together, they patrol the beach sands along The Strand, walking over ten miles a day. The pair also works together during the school year as employees of the Oceanside Unified School District. Faist is a high school criminal justice instructor, and Velasquez is a school district security guard. The rest of the Beach Safety Officer team are professionals who have the summer months free, and college students pursuing a career in criminal justice. She often works with her former students.

Faist created Oceanside High School’s Academy of Justice program the same year she began working as a Beach Safety Officer. The program is a four-year study that introduces high school students to the profession through classroom instruction, speakers, and field trips. It also serves as a pipeline for future Oceanside police explorers, cadets, and sworn officers. “Part of my biggest impact is helping to mold future officers,” explained Faist. Through her onthe-job example and classroom instruction, she continues to do just that.   23

TEN

THINGS YOU DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT THE HISTORY OF

BOWLING IN OCEANSIDE WORDS: KRISTI HAWTHORNE    PHOTOS COURTESY OF OCEANSIDE HISTORICAL SOCIETY

While bowling is considered an “all American” pastime, many years ago it was associated with gambling and was often banned or heavily regulated by local towns and cities. Oceanside has had several bowling alleys in the last 100 years, and they went from being regulated to hosting gubernatorial and presidential candidates.

Oceanside's first bowling alley, 1917.

1.

In 1903, Ordinance No. 143 was issued by Oceanside’s City Council related to both bowling alleys and merry-go-rounds. The oddly worded ordinance read, “No person shall maintain or carry on any pin or bowling alley, shooting gallery, any merry-go-round, or peddle or hawk any article about any street or in the City of Oceanside without having first obtained a license therefore in the manner hereinafter provided that this ordinance does not apply to farmers disposing of their own produce.” Bowling alleys were assessed $1 a month, while merrygo-rounds a whopping $50 a month.

2.

One of the earliest known bowling alleys in Oceanside was owned and operated by Frank Mebach. The two-lane alley opened in 1911, and was located on Third (Pier View Way) and Myers Street. Brunswick-Balke-Collender Company installed the lanes “with all the frills” for a then state-of-the-art establishment, which also included pool and billiard tables. Local merchant E. W. Everett “rolled the first ball” on opening day. Bowling quickly became popular with residents of all ages, and a local team formed and traveled to Escondido to challenge their rivals. One of the best bowlers in Oceanside was Charles F. Tapsico, who held the record in 1917 with a score of 234.

3.

The Mebach bowling alley operated until 1918. The building was sold and moved to a local bean cleaning plant, and used as a warehouse the following year. In 1923, J. W. Fattig opened a two-lane bowling alley on Second Street (Mission Avenue) near Freeman Street.

4.

By 1936, a bowling alley was built in the basement of 206 North Hill Street (Coast Highway). The Oceanside Bowling Alleys

featured four alleys. Pins were manually set with pinsetters paid eight-cents a line. Oceanside native Ernie Carpenter remembered that it could be a harrowing experience: “I used to set pins in the back. [The bowlers] would try to hit the pin setter!” Owned by Russell and Bernice Grosse, the alley was sold in 1943 to Kenneth Stanley, John Fisher, and Paul Beck.

Highway). The bowling alley was operated by Beny Young, and featured ten “brand new Brunswick alleys” and “theater-type seats” for spectators. The building was built and owned by the Richardson Brothers of Oceanside. A cocktail room and snack bar was leased to Oliver Morris, owner of the M&M Café. He turned the lounge into the swanky Blue Palette room.

5.

6.

In 1948, the Bowladrome was built on the 1400 block of South Hill Street (Coast 28

Brooks Street. Paul Ecke of Encinitas was the owner, and he hired builder Carl Braverman of Beverly Hills to construct the $235,000 building, which included a restaurant and cocktail lounge.

7.

The Mission Bowl—as it was named— was operated by George Atos. It featured a lounge that offered “dining, cocktails, and dancing.” The banquet room hosted films, local events, singles dances, and even bridal shows.

8.

Local John Daley remembers that a particularly popular act was a hypnotist who would fill the room to capacity when he performed, making participants cluck like chickens to the amusement of the crowd.

9.

In 1966, Ronald Reagan—a then candidate for governor of California—made three public appearances in San Diego County, one of which was at the Mission Bowl, where Reagan’s tour began with a five-dollar-a-plate breakfast. The following year, former Alabama governor George C. Wallace also included the Mission Bowl as a campaign stop while he was running for president under the American Independent Party. The Mission Bowl was torn down in 1992 to make way for a present-day card room.

10.

Oceanside’s remaining bowling alley, the Bowladrome on Hill Street/Coast Highway, changed its name to Welcome Lanes in the 1960s and eventually expanded to 32 lanes.   29

Bowlers of the Week, 1963

It was likely at that time its iconic “Googie”-style marquis was erected, replacing the original sign that simply said “Bowling.” In 1995, the alley’s name was changed to Surf Bowl. Owner Dale McVey refurbished the bowling center at the time, adding outdoor neon lighting and “Xtreme Glow-in-the-Dark Bowling.” After 71 years, the bowling alley still attracts bowlers of all ages, and has even been featured in the television show Animal Kingdom.

CERT members from all over San Diego County recently participated in search and rescue exercises at the Oceanside Fire Training Center.

Oceanside CERT COMMUNITY EMERGENCY RESPONSE TEAM WORDS: ELIZABETH SCHWARTZE  PHOTOS: ZACH CORDNER

Oceanside High Teen CERT members volunteering at the school's Lilac Fire evacuation center in 2017.

Civilian Heroes Oceanside is populated with hometown heroes and is proud to have its very own CERT. For those who don’t know, CERT stands for the “Community Emergency Response Team.” It’s a national organization that trains civilians to aid fellow community members in the event of a disaster. Therefore, it’s no surprise that Oceanside has a thriving CERT program within its city boundaries. Oceanside CERT members are there to answer the call when the need arises, and safeguard the neighborhoods of Oceanside with everyday heroes—CERT trained heroes! The CERT program began in Los Angeles in 1985. It was the Whittier Narrows earthquake in Los Angeles that identified the need to train citizens for disaster preparedness, since they’re often the first ones on the scene. Trained citizens alleviate the urgency for help until first responders can answer the call. In the case of widespread emergency, trained citizens are often the only help while first responders can prioritize needs. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) took THEOSIDER.COM

notice of CERT’s effectiveness and rolled out a national program in 1993, and official CERT programs are found in all 50 states. In San Diego County, there are 31 recognized CERT programs, including our very own Oceanside CERT program. Oceanside CERT was established by the Oceanside Fire Department in 2005. Since then, the program created its own 501(c)(3) non-profit organization with an involved Board of Directors. Oceanside CERT has trained over 600 community members, and is run exclusively by dedicated volunteer power. OFD serves as the program advisor with support from Fire Chief Robinson. “I get to teach some of the classes and watch civilians get excited about the skills they learn, and then take those skills home to help their family and community,” Robinson proudly disclosed. Why get involved in CERT? “Prepare, prepare, prepare. At the end of the day, we need to have this mindset to take ownership of our own well-being when disaster hits. First responders 32

will usually be strapped, so be prepared for three days in case of widespread disaster. Take ownership of your own well-being and be prepared!” said Rhonda Deniston, Oceanside CERT Program Coordinator. Oceanside CERT offers two trainings per year; one in the fall and one in the spring. It consists of four classes that are four-to-five hours each for a total of twenty hours of training. The course overview includes: • • • • • •

the skills participants have learned in the classroom. According to Deniston, the Oceanside-hosted earthquake simulation had over 120 participants and 60 staff from around the county. With a county-wide rotating schedule, Oceanside was honored to be chosen for 2019’s simulation. Teen CERT is a program offered through Oceanside High School for young adults. Through Teen CERT you can serve your community and help take care of your school and home. There are two classes taught at OHS that reach capacity at 35 kids per class. Given its popularity, a future goal is for OHS to have their own Teen CERT program to accommodate even more high school students. If young THEOSIDER.COM

adults are not students at OHS, they can get involved in Oceanside CERT, beginning at the age of sixteen. A unique subcommittee of Oceanside CERT is the Amateur Radio Team, consisting of over three dozen licensed Amateur Radio Operators (a.k.a “Hams”). In the event of a major disaster, almost all forms of major communication will cease (no cell, cable, or internet), therefore, amateur radio operators serve a vital role to keep communication up and running. The team goal of the Amateur Radio “Hams” is to have at least four-to-five hams within each fire service area. It’s a fun hobby that can also serve an imperative role in a major disaster. The hams gladly welcome new members, and are willing to provide the resources to get started. 34

In the event of a disaster, it’s reassuring to know that family, friends, and neighbors can be “CERT-trained” and ready to help. “There’s a group of volunteers in your community that are looking out for your well-being,” said Billy Woodson, Oceanside CERT Outreach Coordinator and Board of Directors, Member At Large. “I would encourage anyone to take the training course. At the minimum, visit the website to be prepared, because it’s not a matter of if—it’s a matter of when.”

LAST DAYS OF THE OCEANSIDE SWAP MEET WORDS AND PHOTOS: ZACH CORDNER Since 1971, the Oceanside Swap Meet has been held weekly at the old Valley Drive-In and has been a cultural melting pot. On any given Sunday, you could find a brilliantly colorful mix of families enjoying the music, food, endless shopping, and festivities. To some, the swap meet was an eyesore packed with all sorts of junk, but to many people it was a communal place with a sincere sense of belonging. Locals know you could find anything and everything at the Oside swap meet—it might be brand new, gently used, or even beat up, but people didn’t mind—as long as you could haggle a good deal. The food was a fantastic mix of deliciousness, snacks a plenty, tons of fresh veggies, ripe fruit, nuts, and other amenities could be found all over. The smell of fresh churros wafting through the air encouraged you to keep walking through the rows of trinkets, tennis shoes, swords, and military gear as you followed its scent. On Sunday April 28th, 2019, the Oceanside Swap Meet opened and closed its gates for the final time. The crowd was massive; the lines to get in were so lengthy that it became crystal clear our swap meet was more than just “junk”—it was a community hub. It was a place to meet friends and cruise around giggling at all the random things, a place to take your family—especially, the kids—out for an affordable and fun time. We’ll just have to see what actually becomes of the old Drive-In, but rumors abound. Will it be more housing? Will it be a strip mall? Some think it might be a wave park for surfers. Whatever takes its place; we hope it’ll offer more fun experiences for new generations of Osiders.

HomEgrown JASON BETZ WORDS: JAMEY STONE  PHOTO: CHRISTOPHER DONEZ One of the coolest things about Oceanside is that most people from other cities tend to leave home once they finish high school, but true O’siders always seem to stick around town and plant their roots. Maybe it’s that Oceanside pride we all grew up with. For Jason Betz, that’s exactly the case. Jason’s a second-generation local who’s now working on a third generation with his beautiful wife Melissa and his kids Kassidy, Maverick, and Kali. The Betz family has always been a big part of the Oceanside community. Jason’s father, Robert, was both a lifeguard and police officer, and his THEOSIDER.COM

Uncle Bill was a fire captain. This is why he has such deep connection to our city and is so proud to call Oceanside home. At the young age of eleven, Jason gave his first tattoo. We all know that’s pretty young, but Oceanside was a different place back then. Fast-forward to the early 2000s, he opened up his first tattoo shop Frontline, where he mostly served the local crowd and military personnel. Along the way, he met a man while tattooing who told him about the history of this art form in Oceanside, and from that point, Jason dug into the history books and started to build a 44

collection of the tattoo legacy here. In 2016, he opened up Oceanside Tattoo Arcade, where he has set up a museum of tattoo history in Oceanside. Like I said, people who grow up here tend to stay and deepen the roots of Oceanside, and Jason Betz is no exception. Other than tattooing, you can find Mr. Betz out fishing and spending quality time with his family around town. One thing Jason always states is that his sense of O’side pride is stronger than ever and he loves that he can make an honest living and raise his family in the same place he grew up. We couldn’t agree more, Jason. O’sider for life.

Q&A with Blade Runner actress Joanna Cassidy.

For nine years, the Oceanside International Film Festival has been providing Oceanside with a top-notch red carpet experience, and this year was no exception. The festivities last throughout the week and present a variety of content and filmmaking styles. This year’s festival kicked off the week with the world premier of a classic video tribute from a local up and coming rock and roll band Mrs. Henry. From there, the week led into a “red carpet” opening ceremony showcasing TNT’s hit program Animal Kingdom. Animal Kingdom is not only filmed in Oceanside, but proudly proclaims that the authenticity and character of our town is part of what gives their show the depth that it has. “The vibe in Oceanside is great. There are real people, and there’s the relationship with the community. It’s the perfect place for our story,” said Animal Kingdom actor Shawn Hatosy. “Oceanside is a character in itself. Without Oceanside, we wouldn’t have a show.” Hatosy is one of the main actors that’s also begun directing select episodes, as well. This year’s Oceanside International Film Festival featured dramatic short films, narrative works, and non-fiction short films. Many of these programs where produced in San Diego, and satisfied the demands of viewers from a vast artistic community. The weekend ushered in more great times at the OIFF. A highlight of THEOSIDER.COM

Animal Kingdom actors Ben Robson and Shawn Hatosy.

Saturday’s showings was a feature produced by Vans showcasing the life and story of legendary professional skateboarder Tony Alva. After that, the audience was treated to a special evening of film from the iconic, and award winning surf filmmaker Taylor Steele. Sunday closed out the film festival awarding Taylor Steele a lifetime achievement award and finished of the day with a community-oriented panel discussion from the Emmy-nominated actress Joanna Cassidy of Blade Runner fame. To dive deeper into the highlights of the week, we’ll start with Wednesday evening and the premiere of the most recent episode of Animal Kingdom directed by Shawn Hatosy. We had the honor of a private interview with Hatosy and Ben Robson, and they gave us an inside scoop on why they love Oceanside so much. “Oceanside has that sort of authenticity, a sense of beach style, and identity. It’s fun to be a part of it and represent it in the show,” Robson told us. “That’s why when they asked us to come to the OIFF, we wanted to be here because the community has been so supportive to us. Getting to screen the show here is like saying ‘thank you’ to this community that’s helped us get to where we are. And in a way, it’s saying that you guys are owners of the show as well,” elaborated Hatosy. Nothing but praises and compliments about Oceanside were handed out by these two during 52

the duration of the evening. The VIP event was catered by several local restaurants and was a true highlight of the life, arts, and culture that Oceanside encompasses. The action sports night of this weeklong film festival certainly did not disappoint. The evening kicked off with an in-depth view into the life and times of Tony Alva, perhaps one of the most legendary skaters to ever hit the pavement. During some of the days in his career, Alva had a thriving skate shop here in town and helped put Oside on the map in the 90s as a destination for SoCal skate culture. Departing from the concrete and out to sea and far off places, Taylor Steele and crew stole the show. Their night launched off with epic grom-like banter and laughter from three old friends who could only have bonded with such closeness after years of brotherly adventures. Before Taylor’s video exhibition began, local legend Taylor Knox and Hawaiian charger Kalani Robb (both featured in many of Steele’s films) had their fun cracking jokes and sharing tales of 30 years of shenanigans with Steele. Taylor led the audience through some of his most memorable and favorite surf adventures talking story and sharing behind-the-scenes looks into some of his most intimate filmmaking endeavors. From a soul searching mission with professional WSL surfer Mick Fanning into the

jungles of Africa, to the wave-hunting adventures with names like Rob Machado and Dave Rastovich, Steele kept the audience captivated with spectacular visual images and his incredible storytelling gift. Steele is a legend in the filmmaking industry, and has set a bar for generations of men and woman to come. In his life and films, he’s been able to capture an essence of not just surfing, but the tender human condition and our never ending search to find peace and happiness. It’s this ability that made him the prefect candidate to receive a lifetime achievement award. To honor

the career and path of Steele, the OIFF honored him with a lifetime achievement award for his dedication to film, in addition to his time and energy spent documenting surfing here in Oceanside. Finishing up the weekend with a bang, OIFF brought in a big name from Hollywood. Joanna Cassidy, an Emmy-nominated and Golden Globe recipient, perhaps most well know for her roll in the 80s blockbuster hit Blade Runner, was gracious enough to spend an evening here in Oceanside by interacting with attendees of the film festival and indulging them   53

in a very personal and intimate setting of a “Q & A” forum. Needless to say, it was well received by the audience. This sealed the week off and left everyone feeling satisfied and elated by another successful week at the theater. Always seeking to improve and expand, the OIFF will surely outdo itself in the years to come. Mark your calendars and join in the fun next year at the historic Brooks Theater tucked right in the central of our growing and thriving downtown district. Be prepared to enjoy a night at the cinema and participate in the amazing arts, music, and culture that the town of Oceanside has to offer. THEOSIDER.COM

LOCAL BUSINESS

Weekly Thursday meeting at the Mansion.

The Bumbag Co. is more than just a brand— it’s a labor of love. It’s about tight friends who came from the streets of Oceanside with nothing more than the shirts on their backs, a love of skateboarding, and the desire to start a company of their very own. Launched in 2017, Bumbag is the brainchild of local skate legends and brothers Troye (aka Bobby Long) Rhoades, Lannie Rhoades, and JT Rhoades, and is masterminded by Brad Hooker, an Australian THEOSIDER.COM

skateboard industry veteran, who runs the dayto-day sales and marketing from down under. The brand was instrumental in helping usher the “fanny pack” craze back into play as Bobby Long has been wearing one for years. Fanny packs were huge in the late 80s and early 90s and has since made a comeback, thanks to Bumbag. “Two years ago, I was laying in bed and I had been wearing a fanny pack for a good amount of time, and my buddy Brad Hooker 54

called me up and told me that we needed to start making fanny packs and then sell them on the Internet. Brad is Australian, so he thought it’d be pretty funny to call them “bumbags” because that’s what they’re called where he’s from,” said Bobby. It’s interesting to note that their company made fanny packs popular again, and since then, many big name streetwear, footwear, and lifestyle brands have jumped on the bandwagon and recently started making their own fanny packs. But Bumbag was the first company to bring it back, and that’s what makes them so special. “It’s a product that’s going to help you the moment you leave your door. You’ll feel way better with your fanny pack on you with all your needs in there and everything. No pockets, no problem,” smiled Bobby. Bumbag is 100-percent skateboarder owned and operated and is headquartered at the infamous Loretta Mansion in the Posole neighborhood, where the crew has their weekly Thursday meetings. With the exception of a few sales reps out in the field, Bumbag employs around 25 people locally. “We all influence each other—a bunch of homies kickin’ it, skating, and just being with each other. It really helps us brainstorm, feed off each other, and come up with good ideas,” explained Bobby. Besides fanny packs or “hip sacks,” Bumbag also produces different styles of backpacks, shoulder bags, new styles of bags, and they’ve recently made a cooler and a duffle bag for travel.

“We like to just get into all sorts of bags. We’re going to do a water bottle holder soon, and maybe a laptop case,” said Bobby. Last April, Bumbag teamed up with local artist Nolan Cooley in support of Autism Awareness Month. Nolan’s unique art was featured on a Bumbag and helped raise awareness of the acceptance of Autism. The brand has also made fanny pack collabs with legendary skateboard companies like Toy Machine and Baker Skateboards, and they have the support of professional skateboarders, such as Jackson Pilz, Boo Johnson, Jesse Noonan, Jack Kirk, Jamie Foy, Kevin Long, Nora Vasconellos, Kevin White, Tristan Funkhouser, and the list goes on and on.

“At the start of Bumbag, it was unreal to see how many people here were supporting it. That’s why we love doing our events in Oceanside. The last event we did was a ‘run and gun’ one at old 500 Motors where we just barged it,” said Bobby. “We’d give kids a free Bumbag for boardsliding a flatbar or whatever. It didn’t really matter what they were doing—if they came, they were getting something. I’ll throw thousands of Bumbags at these kids—I don’t care. We want to help people from the streets because that’s where we came from.” For more info, please visit thebumbag.com or you can follow them on Instagram @thebumbagco

LOCAL RETAILER

INDIO   WHITE WORDS: ALICIA STONE PHOTOS: PRISCILLA IEZZI

Indio White—the nomadic home—is one of the new additions to our Coast Highway collective. This meticulously curated artisanal home goods retail space is a stop worth making if you’re in the market for handmade and exotic decor. Owners Jason and Tina Fisher have taken their knowledge of cultural aesthetics and love for globetrotting and brought their treasures from foreign lands home for us to experience. Jason and Tina met twenty years ago while working for a large resort on the island of Maui. They soon started their adventure together living in Australia, China, and then backpacking their way through hostels around the world. When they decided to settle down, they earned their degrees from Design Institute of San Diego and worked for large firms in the area. They began to blend their love of travel and design into their own projects and in 2014 Fig Studio was born. The couple made it a priority to get to know the local artisans they met in other countries and thought it was a natural progression to use those connections to bring their unusual finds to their THEOSIDER.COM

own customers. They set their sights on Tina’s hometown of Oceanside, and now have recently planted their business along our main route. In addition to the retail shop, Indio White offers a full interior design service. They have the ability to provide consultation, schematics, and project design using sustainable materials as well as all construction documents. In “the nomadic home” showroom, they have a colorful array of vintage hand loomed rugs and runners, leather poufs, Indian hand-stitched quilts, and Moroccan Sabra and Turkish Kilim woven pillows. They also have Beaded “swag” (African décor made with recycled glass and hemp) unique kitchen accessories, and rustic accent furniture. Tina was raised in Oceanside as one of eight children by third-generation residents. “My family has always been involved in this community, and after years of living so far away, it felt right to open our business here. Although Jason grew up on ranches in Texas, his love for the ocean made him happy to adopt 56

my hometown as his own.” Tina expressed her excitement for the future of our city by adding, “In a tourist destination, progress is inevitable, but Oceanside residents take pride in their own. It’s important for us to be supportive of locals trying to add value to the community we all share.”

The connection between the military and Oceanside has always been an important catalyst in the community. In 2008, marine veterans Aaron Ortega and Robert Parsons met and discovered that they shared a passion for craft beer and soon started brewing together. Shortly thereafter, the idea of starting a brewery didn’t seem so out of reach. Aaron, his wife Anne, and Robert combined their love for the outdoors and great beer to form Northern Pine Brewing. They opened their doors in 2017, bringing a taste of the Northwest to Oceanside. Located right off the I-5 freeway and Mission Avenue, Northern Pine has a diverse collection of beers that have the highest quality with a little something for any craft beer enthusiast. One of the favorites is a Pale Ale called Koastrider. A collaboration between PCH Sports Bar & Grill and The Privateer, this delicious pale ale has a

hoppy, piney taste that’s smooth and delicious. With its golden color and amazing aroma, it’s become a crowd favorite. Another great beer is the Saized and Confused Saison. This Belgian-style beer has a spicy taste and definitely brings an array of flavors to the table. Saisons can be tricky, but Northern Pine hits the nail on the head with this one. They also mix it with juice to make a saisedmosa for that perfect breakfast beer. It wouldn’t be a great San Diego brewery without a great Southern California IPA, and the Golden Horizons IPA is just that. This hop-forward IPA is bursting with fruit flavor that perfectly compliments each other, and the Citra and Amarillo hops are a perfect match. The Sunny Vibes Mexican lager is smooth, light, and just what the doctor ordered on those hot Oceanside afternoons. One of the best things about Northern Pine   59

is the way they embrace the community and give back. Whether it’s brewing for charities like Brewbies or donating to the troops, they’re always thinking of ways to make our city and community better. Northern Pine assistant brewer Chad Lee can be seen playing drums in many bands, most notably Mrs. Henry, whose documentary was featured at this year’s Oceanside International Film Festival. This group of great humans is yet another reason why Oceanside is one of the greatest cities in California. So do yourself a favor and head on in and enjoy great people and great beer.

MR. BIBI WORDS: KATIE LALICATA PHOTOS: ZACH CORDNER Tucked away in plain sight right in the heart of downtown Oceanside is the newest addition to the booming culinary scene this town is seeing. Mr. BIBI enters this food explosion by bringing new flavors and dishes that are as exciting as they are unique. The Yons, a Korean family transplanted here from Riverside, are thrilled to be in a beachside town serving food that represents their culture and their heart. “We were out where it was hot, and we wanted to be beach side, somewhere where it was cooler. We found this location, and we wanted to serve Korean food because our restaurant before was Japanese, and it was hard for us because it wasn’t out culture,” said Mr. BIBI owner Gin with a smile. “We are proud to serve Korean food.” Family owned and operated, their authenticity and genuine dedication to serve locals great food makes them a perfect fit for Oceanside. Their star dish is the Bibimbap, a traditional Korean mixed rice dish with a fusion of both American and Korean ingredients. It’s a hot stone bowl filled with rice, veggies, meats (chicken, spicy pork or beef Bulgogi), and crafted exactly to your liking. The style here is casual as you order at the counter and build your bowl as you go. What makes this feast so fantastic is the way the rice gets a magical crispy caramelization when it sears in the bottom of the hot stone bowl. Their selection of sauce also leaves nothing to be desired. From gochujang, a classic Korean condiment, to spicy mayo and soy sauce, Mr. BIBI THEOSIDER.COM

offers flavors to satisfy any and all palates. According to Kwan, “The Bibimbap is the perfect balanced meal, it’s not too salty, not too sweet, not too greasy, and it’s catered exactly to your taste. With our food, you can’t go wrong.” The set up here is simple, affordable, and a perfect place to dine alone or bring the whole family. Although the Bibimbap bowl is the star of the menu, their restaurant has a variety of other Korean fusion offerings, as well. These items include udon, gyoza, salads, tempuras, and even a house kimchi. As Korean food becomes more popular for diners seeking new options Mr. BIBI is proud to bring their original style and flavors here to Oceanside. As they get settled into life at the beach, they’re excited to grow their menu and plan to serve alcohol and traditional Korean style fried chicken in the near future. In a land of taco shops and fancy eateries, Mr. BIBI is the perfect fit to satisfy your hunger and compliment the ever growing and diversifying culture of Oceanside. LA PERLA TAPATIA WORDS: JAMEY STONE  PHOTOS: ZACH CORDNER

I spend a lot of time in Mexico chasing waves, camping, and enjoying the local foods. So whenever I see a Mexican restaurant around town, I can be a bit skeptical regarding its authenticity. Upon entering La Perla Tapatia, I was immediately taken to my happy place. Right when you walk in the door, you can feel the goodness brimming to the top. There’s a full kitchen serving traditional street tacos, Mexican breakfast and traditional plates such as Chile Rellenos, Chilaquiles, Tortas and even house made Moles. Everything at La Perla Tapatia is made from scratch with love. The recipes come from owner Reggie Gaeta’s Guadalajara roots, and they’re all delicious. Maybe it has something to do with the bakery and meat market that grace the right side of the store. The tortas, tortillas, and assortment of baked goods are made daily. THEOSIDER.COM

The cuts of meat are done in house, too. Not to mention, the Agua Fresca is made daily with fresh fruits, such as Watermelon, Mango, and Tamarind—just to name a few. Much like most markets in Mexico, you can shop and get a home made meal all under one roof. They also have an outdoor taco cart on Friday and Saturday evenings just like they do in Mexico. Reggie opened in 1994 when he moved down from Orange County where he was a chef at the Four Seasons in Newport Beach. He set down roots in Oceanside, and, along with his wife, Martha has raised his children Brian, Jason, Perla, and Belinda. They all contribute to the restaurant in one way or another. This is a true family affair. Reggie loves the Oceanside community and is very proud to call this place home. With two locations in the Valley, stopping in for a taco and an Agua Fresca is a must. 62

BIG BOB’S BEST PIZZA WORDS: AARON SCHMIDT  PHOTOS: CHRISTOPHER DONEZ Located at 3617 Ocean Ranch Boulevard, owners Diana and Dave Cole, and their business partner Bob Richards opened Big Bob’s Best Pizza back in April of 2011. Bob is the face of the company and he does the day-to-day operations at the restaurant, and you can usually find him everyday in the back, manning the kitchen. Dave and Bob were best friends growing up together in Orange County, and by opening Big Bob’s eight years ago, they both fulfilled a childhood dream of theirs to run their own pizza place. Big Bob’s serves everything from traditional old world-style pizza, sandwiches, salads, pasta, and much more. Everything is made in-house from scratch and only the freshest ingredients are used. “Since we’re not a franchise, we really put our money into our ingredients. I think it really works because of our food quality and customer service,” said Diana. The most popular pizzas are the Tuscany and The Works, with the Tuscany featuring chicken breast, tomatoes, avocados, and their delicious garlic pesto. The Works features pepperoni, ham, sausage, mushroom, black olives, green peppers, THEOSIDER.COM

and onions. Both are equally amazing and should be on your radar when you stop in for lunch. “What sets us apart from other pizza places is that we serve ‘masculine’ pizza. It’s got heavy toppings and larger quantities, so we have a sort of 1970s style,” explained Diana. Other popular menu items include the garlic cheese bread, the Greek Salad, lasagna, Italian Sub, and the crowd favorite for dessert has to be the cannoli—it was so good I thought I was back in the old world. A definite fan favorite is their pepperoni pizza—I usually gauge a pizza place by how good their pepperoni pizzas are and Big Bob’s pepperoni is on point with some of this town’s best on offer. When it comes to giving back to our local community, Big Bob’s has donated (and continue to donate) pizzas to Bread of Life Rescue Mission, Women’s Resource Center, Boys & Girls Club of Oceanside, El Camino High School, Oceanside High School, Ivey Ranch, McAuliffe, MLK Middle School PTSAs, and Oceanside National Little League, to name a few. Big Bob’s delivers to your doorstep and will 64

cater any party or special event that comes their way. Their lunch specials run daily until 4pm. If you haven’t stopped by to try them out, now’s as good as time as any, and I promise you you’ll be glad you did.
