A WORD FROM THE PUBLISHER
Local's summer is everyone’s favorite time of year and what a season it’s been so far. The weather has been amazing. There’s been a lot more of a local vibe around town, and everything seems to be moving right along. For us here at The Osider, this time of year signifies another volume of magazines in the book. As we start to look forward to next year, we take time to reflect on all of the great memories that we’ve shared over the course of 2019. This perhaps has been the busiest year we’ve ever witnessed in our hometown. Things seem to be growing at light speed around town, and we all know that a big THEOSIDER.COM
change is knocking at our door. They say the “only constant is change” and we’re cool with that. But we promise to do our part to keep the roots of Oceanside strong through supporting small business, telling the stories of our past, and growing alongside the future, while putting a spotlight on the people who have made Oceanside the best city in San Diego. To celebrate all of these great things, we have an amazing photo feature in this issue that spotlights some very talented local photographers. We also have our second annual Oside Flavor event story to share. We’re very proud to be a part of this 8

growing community, and seeing all of these talented chefs, bakers, wine makers, brewers, and consumers in one place gives us great pleasure. This is our city and it’s up to us to take care of it. We’ll do our part and I know that you all feel the same way. Let’s keep it moving in the right direction, Oceanside.

GREEN O WHO IS SAL TORRES? Sal Torres is the perfect representation of what Green Oceanside is all about. Since 1997, Sal has strived to keep our city clean and closer to its goals for zero waste. He’s solely devoted to servicing our pier, harbor, and bus stop city trash and recycling bins every day. After beginning his career with Waste Management in 1993, Sal has been working in the City of Oceanside for almost 25 years and has been a valuable member of the community. Throughout the years, Sal has seen Oceanside grow and prosper and he enjoys living in the city he serves. He moved to Oceanside in 2001 and has watched Oceanside thrive, especially in the downtown area, with his wife and four daughters by his side. THEOSIDER.COM
SAL TORRES STRIVING FOR ZERO WASTE AND A BEAUTIFUL OCEANSIDE
A DAY IN THE LIFE OF SAL Each morning, Sal wakes up at 4:15am to clock in at work by 5am. He begins his workday by servicing the trash and recycling bins on the Oceanside Pier and along the strand. Once the sun has risen and the lights on the pier turn off, he makes his way down to the Oceanside Harbor, where he services each and every trash and recycling can as the boaters start their day and businesses begin to open. Once those tasks are completed, Sal goes on to service other cans throughout the city. In high seasons, some of these cans are serviced twice a day. After servicing hundreds of bins, he can finally take a break, go home, and repeat his duties the next morning. Sal works Monday through Saturday and the occasional Sunday, and can work for up to 11 hours a day. 14
When Sal isn’t behind the wheel of his green solid waste and recycling truck, he enjoys watching classic films and spending time with his wife María Socorro Torres of 29 years and four daughters—Kristell, Katie, Karen, and Kayla— who have all attended Oceanside Unified schools. On the Sundays he has off, he attends church and enjoys Oceanside’s beaches. At home, Sal practices sustainability and is an avid recycler. He has seen recycling programs improve over the years and states that a larger number of residents and visitors are recycling their items to create a more sustainable city.
“I am proud to keep my city clean and it feels good seeing my hard work payoff.”
Sal and his family
WHY SAL ENJOYS HIS JOB When asked why he enjoys working in the City of Oceanside, Sal responded, “I am proud to keep my city clean and it feels good seeing my hard work payoff.” He went on to say that he knows people appreciate the job he does, whether it’s a resident, business, or visitor. Customer service and satisfaction is what drives him everyday to serve our community. Each time Sal drives down Pacific Street families and children wave to him and that puts a smile on his face. Knowing that people acknowledge his hard work and passion makes him happy to go to work every day.
If you see Sal in the early morning hours servicing the bins along the Oceanside Pier or Harbor, or are waiting for your bus and see him drive by, be sure to give him a wave to show your thanks for all he does for Green Oceanside, zero waste, and our community. Thank you, Sal!

MARIA MINGALONE WORDS: ELIZABETH SCHWARTZE PHOTO: ZACH CORDNER
In a resplendent building downtown, some of our city’s greatest treasures are curated by one of Oceanside’s finest—Executive Director at Oceanside Museum of Art, Maria Mingalone. Over the past three years, Maria has worked tirelessly to elevate Oceanside Museum of Art and her efforts are working—Oceanside Museum of Art (OMA) is gaining notoriety, increasing attendance, curating exciting and popular shows, and becoming a creative beacon in Oceanside. Born and raised on the beaches of New York, Maria grew up in a similar beach community on the opposite side of the country, and finds many comforts of home here. She arrived in Oceanside when she was recruited from a renowned museum in Western Massachusetts. “Oceanside is pretty incredible. There’s a lot of energy, creativity, and possibility. I love that I can walk to work. I made a conscious decision to live here—to understand Oceanside,” said Mingalone. Her commitment is to the community she describes as “funky, scrappy, and creative, with a ‘can-do’ attitude.” Maria is an artist with a rich background in art education and she understands art from the inside out, and considers OMA an “artist-run”
institution. OMA takes risks, and proudly offer shows from emerging artists. OMA also loves to support the local art scene and highlight artists living and working in the region. She believes the museum building is also a metaphor for Oceanside with the new building sitting behind, allowing the older building to “show off.”
“Her commitment is to the community she describes as ‘funky, scrappy, and creative, with a ‘can-do’ attitude” Our city has a lot of future growth, but it’s very proud to show off its culture, its history, and what makes it authentic. Not every city houses such a prestigious museum of art—there’s nothing like it in neighboring cities, even more affluent cities. Diversity is a big part of Oceanside, and it’s a big part of OMA. “Our main goal is to make sure OMA is accessible to everyone,” stated Maria. “About 62% of museum visitors obtain free admission.” OMA is privileged to support First 19
Friday Art Walk that happens the first Friday of every month in downtown Oceanside, and offers free admission. It’s a great event for locals, and local artists. OMA is also available to rent for private events—a prestigious space for the community to share. OMA has made a commitment to the youth. They have doubled their education programming over the past three years. They’ve found that Oceanside is really an extended family of people and organizations that want to lift each other up, beginning with the youth. For example, two programs at OMA are teacher workshops, and school field trips. Art is great for inquiry-based learning, and OMA has resources for teachers to implement in the classroom and then connect at the museum. With so much already accomplished, Maria is excited about her supporting role in executing the next phase. For example, OMA will expand to the nearby Fire Station #1 when the new fire station is built. “We have a lot to offer the arts community now and in the future,” she disclosed. With her tireless dedication to elevating Oceanside’s art community, Maria is most definitely one of Oceanside’s Finest! THEOSIDER.COM

THINGS YOU DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT
CHURCHES IN OCEANSIDE WORDS: KRISTI HAWTHORNE PHOTOS COURTESY OF OCEANSIDE HISTORICAL SOCIETY
When Oceanside was first established in 1883, it had little else than a wooden platform for a train stop and a few small houses. One year later, the San Diego Union reported, “Oceanside can now boast of a railroad station, a store, a blacksmith shop, a hotel, a livery station, and a saloon.” Back then, the saloon business was a thriving one, and that may have compelled the need for churches to bring salvation, as drunk and disorderly arrests were very common, along with fistfights and brawls. Five saloons were located within a two-block radius and outnumbered the churches more than two-to-one. As Oceanside grew, so did the churches. Today, Oceanside’s places of worship and denominations are as diverse as our population. THEOSIDER.COM

1.
In 1886, the Congregational Church building was constructed at a cost of $5,000. Featuring Gothic architecture, it was made of brick from the Oceanside Brick and Fuel Company. The First United Methodist Church of Oceanside purchased the Congregational Church building in 1891. They had been meeting there Sunday evenings for several years. The Methodists enlarged and improved the building in 1900, and then again in 1950. In 1927, the Methodists purchased the First Christian Church building and relocated it just west of their church to be used as Sunday schoolrooms. It was moved once again to Ditmar Street to make way for the new Methodist Church social hall with kitchen and basement classrooms built in 1958. Located at 625 Seagaze (formerly First Street), it’s Oceanside’s oldest surviving church building and one of the few remaining brick buildings from the 1880s, and is still in use as a church today.
Methodist Church, circa 1910.
2.
Another early church was the Holiness Church, an offshoot of American Methodism. It was located on the 600 block of North Freeman Street as early as 1886. By 1909, it was converted into a residence. Apparently, this congregation either dwindled away or perhaps remerged with the local Methodist Congregation.
3.
The First Baptist Church was organized on October 8, 1887, and services were held at the Bunker House on North Cleveland Street. The church started with just nine members. In late 1888, the First Baptist Church of Oceanside began construction of a church building on North Freeman Street near the corner of Fourth (Civic Center Drive). The first service held in the new edifice was on January 31, 1889. Early baptisms took place at the San Luis Rey River or in the ocean until a baptismal was built. In 1906, the church building was moved to Hill Street (Coast Highway) when it was considered “too far out from the center of town,” which was then centered around the train depot. In 1945, when traffic was too loud on the 101 Highway and sermons couldn’t be heard, it was moved to the corner of Freeman and Fourth Streets (Civic Center Drive) where it remains today. Over the years, the building has housed a mortuary, playhouse, and the Armed Services YMCA.
4.
Grace Episcopal Mission was formed (or established) in 1889. The congregation met in a small building that once served as a paint shop, located on the 100 block of North Hill Street (Coast Highway). When Reverend Sidney H. Woodford came to Oceanside, he began a building fund to raise money for a more appropriate building, which was built in 1905. This church was relocated to West Street in 1949 and it was the home of St. Anne’s Episcopal Church for many years.
5.
In 1896, St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church was built. The original church building was a small wooden chapel located on the corner of Ditmar and Third Street (Pier View Way). For several years, Father O’Keefe would

travel there from the Mission San Luis Rey to hold services. In 1920, the church held a ceremony to raise their new church bell. Benefactors included Jerome O’Neill, the owner of the vast Rancho Santa Margarita, as he was given the honor to ring the bell for the first time. In 1927, St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church built a beautiful new building at the same location, designed by Emmet G. Martin of Los Angeles. The original wooden chapel was moved west of the new church and used for a number of years as a parish. It was later moved to the Eastside neighborhood on Lemon Street. The First Christian Church of San Luis Rey transplanted to Oceanside in 1908. A small building for services had been erected in 1889 near the southwest corner of First and Hill Streets (Seagaze and Coast Highway), but services were sporadic as the majority of the members all lived in the San Luis Rey Valley. When the congregation of 23 moved to town, they met in an eighteen by 24-foot frame structure that was lit by a tin coal oil lamp hanging from the ceiling and the pews were homemade benches. Soon the congregation was expecting a “miracle” as a saintly benefactor came to town and promised to finance a new church building. George M. Smith told the pastor that he was simply waiting for an inheritance of one million dollars and then he’d donate the money for a grand new church made of brick and granite. A pipe organ was ordered, along with pews and other furniture, and the church waited patiently—but the money never came. Mr. Smith never received any inheritance and the church was left empty handed. However, “the Lord works

in mysterious ways” and the little church was able to build a new— albeit modest—church building through tithes and offerings. However, in 1928, the First Christian Church would get that new building. The congregation had grown substantially and built a new church at 208 South Freeman Street. This Craftsman style church was built at a cost of $35,000 and was dedicated on September 30, 1928. Pastor W.A. Ross ordered original photographs of the River Jordan from Palestine and commissioned an artist to paint its likeness for the baptistery. The stained glass windows were dedicated to the early pioneer members of the church from the San Luis Rey Valley.
First Presbyterian Church El Camino Real at Fire Mountain 1967.
7.
Early African American Churches include the A.M.E. Walker Chapel on Laurel Street in the Eastside neighborhood, along with St. John Missionary Baptist Church on Lemon Street, built in 1949. The Second Missionary Baptist Church was form in 1971, and they purchased the former Nazarene Church building at 1007 South Tremont Street in 1973. The congregation outgrew that building and built a new church on Mare Road in 1997.
8.
Christian Scientists had been meeting in Oceanside for over two decades, but weren’t recognized by the “Mother Church” until 1924. The Oceanside church united with the Carlsbad church establishing the First Church of Christ, Scientist of Oceanside in 1934. Lots on the corner of South Ditmar and Michigan Streets had been purchased years earlier, and a church was built in 1937 with a reading room being added in 1955.
9.
In August of 1928, the First Church of God held their first service in their new church on the southwest corner of Washington and Nevada Streets. Due to the Great Depression and lack of funds, the church building was sold to the Seventh Day Adventists in the early 1930s. By 1940, the 27
church members reorganized, and in 1946, a new church was built at 107 South Clementine Street. By the early 1970s, the Seventh Day Adventist Church relocated to California Street in the Fire Mountain area. The church building at 501 South Nevada Street is now the home of the Saint Germain Foundation.
10.
In 1948, the First Presbyterian Church’s first meetings were held in the Knights of Pythias Hall on North Tremont Street. In 1951, the congregation moved into a new house of worship located at 1034 South Hill Street (Coast Highway). The church purchased five acres at the corner of Fire Mountain and El Camino Real in 1965, and a new church building was erected in 1967.

We also had a silent auction with donations from many local businesses benefitting The Oceanside Boardriders Club. It’s such a great feeling to see our community come together to support these great causes, so thank you. This year, we also added our first-ever “Best Flavor Award,” which is voted on by our attendees with the idea being to reward one vendor with $500 and a handmade trophy designed by @joestoneandsilver, along with

HomEgrown LEA LOVE WORDS: JAMEY STONE PHOTO: ZACH CORDNER
One my favorite things about Oceanside is our rich diversity. It’s mainly because with such an amazing mix of culture, we’re blessed to have so many people with different gifts to share with the rest of the world. Take Lea Love, for instance. Born right here in O’side in 1991 to her wonderful Samoan mother Cheryl and her HawaiianJapanese father Roy, they knew right away that their daughter had a special gift. In no time, Lea was entering her first talent show where she wowed the audience with her beautiful voice and staggering stage presence. From that point on, Lea Love was born. Her first concert was The Spice girls, and she knew THEOSIDER.COM
right then and there that entertainment was going to be her career path. Watching acts like NSYNC and Selena helped to shape her musical outlook. Shortly after high school, she moved to LA and immersed herself into the music scene and eventually got signed to Island Empire record label. This is where Lea really found her musical style by combining a reggae and Hawaiian vibe with a touch of R&B. Soon after, Lea found herself touring the West Coast where her fan base started to blossom. She ended up in Hawaii for a few months and eventually moved home to O’side and started work on her recently released Way I Am LP, which ended up being number one in Hawaii. 46
Lea Love’s Oceanside so much (pun intended), she adores bonding with friends and family whenever her dad BBQs—which is a lot. Being home with her Ohana has allowed Lea to reset and get ready for her next project. If you haven’t heard her music, you should check her out on iTunes. Trust me when I tell you that she’ll become part of your playlist because this girl sings like a boss and rips the stage with the best of them! Thank you for representing Oceanside, Lea Love. HOW TO MAKE A PORKY THE PIG SANDWICH WITH SENOR GRUBBY’S PHOTOS: ZACH CORDNER
This sandwich was inspired by one of our cooks, Quentin, and his love for southern food. He and another part of Grubby’s Oceanside family Isaiah worked to perfect the recipe. We loved this so much that we decided it’d become a seasonal item in Oceanside. Supporting local, we met Hot Mama Jamz and loved their product so much that we’re using their jam for the sweet-and-savory-with-a hint-of spice finish.
THEOSIDER.COM

Place grilled meat with cheese on the bagel and then top with the egg.

ARTS
PATRICK DOHERTY
BUILDING A COMMUNITY OF FILM PHOTOGRAPHERS WORDS: KATIE LALICATA PHOTOS: ZACH CORDNER
Revenge of the camera nerds is in full effect. Local photographer, entrepreneur, and all around kindhearted guy, Patrick Doherty is leading the charge. Patrick is a local who was raised in Oceanside, and the kind of spirit that beautifully contributes to the authenticity that’s a bragging point of this town. School was never Patrick’s thing. Cameras saved his life. The arts and culture surrounding photography was the perfect outlet to channel the electric energy that doesn’t sit well in the traditional classroom structure. With lots of hard work, dedication, and the listening of his heart, Patrick has paved his own way. With the support of many other camera and photography aficionados, a really cool new community is growing roots right here in Oceanside. For the past several years, Patrick has been sharing and spreading his love of vintage/retro cameras, and more specifically, the art of shooting on film. Once the digital age took over, the film industry began to die. It’s recently been on an uphill climb again, and this is largely due to guys like Patrick. People looking for some THEOSIDER.COM
nostalgia—something tangible to create and hold on to. In a world of instant satisfaction and social media uploads, film photography gives the artists something real to hold—a camera, and a photograph. Part of what makes Patrick so excited about taking photos on film is, well, everything. He used to frequent the swap meet, hunting for cameras and then connected with like-minded beings to sell, or redistribute these ancient relics. There’re so many different kinds of film, and even more cameras. These machines don’t even require batteries! They’re like dinosaurs, but withstanding the test of time. And the photos? They’re high quality, if not better than many of the devices used today. Patrick is a wealth of knowledge in this industry. What’s so often missing from today’s culture is something these cameras and Patrick provide: Community. His reputation as “Film Daddy” (yes, you can find him on Instagram @filmdaddy47) is growing along with concrete proof that the camera clique is here to stay. Patrick recently 54
A recent "Coffee and Cameras" meet up at Wisconsin Street.
became a vendor with a booth at SeaHive— Oceanside’s very own vintage mall. Patrick is often occupying his booth, excited, and willing to talk all things camera. In addition to having a plethora of vintage cameras there to sell, he also gathers and processes rolls of film. It’s not easy
or affordable these days to get rolls of film turned into photos, and in the case that a drugstore will indeed develop your photos, they don’t return the negatives. Which, according to Patrick, is the most valuable part. He oozes infective passion in every direction. “I just want to make people happy,” he beamed over and over again. A few times a month, Patrick goes up to Orange County and uses a photo-processing lab to develop over a hundred rolls of film that his friends and local photographers have entrusted to him. Patrick’s commitment to Oceanside and the film community goes even further as he has began to coordinate camera meet ups. Properly calling them “Coffee and Cameras,” he and the rest of the camera gang meet up at one of the abundant local coffee shops, support the business, sip on coffee, and talk camera. Then they head into the streets to capture whatever action they may find. These gatherings (as informal as they are) are thriving. Patrick posts on his social media the “when and 55
where,” and just recently, a few new fresh faces drove all the way up from South San Diego to join in on the action. Arts and Culture is unarguably part of what creates the edgy and bohemian culture here in Oceanside. Patrick is looking forward to intertwining even more with that vibe, as he currently searches for a space to open a darkroom. This space will be so much more than a photo-developing center. It’ll be a hub for camera and film lovers of all ages to come together and celebrate their shared passion. For life long film photographers, or someone looking to get their first camera, Patrick and this crew are the most welcoming of people and love to share their intrigue of photography with anyone and everyone.

LOCAL BUSINESS
WESTCOAST AUTO SERVICE WORDS: AARON SCHMIDT PHOTOS: ZACH CORDNER
Located on South Coast Highway, Westcoast Auto Service has been an automotive staple in Oceanside for many years. Owners Scott & Dianna Bailey, their son Tony Bailey, and Chris Patterson opened Westcoast Auto Service around 30 years ago. “Scott and I originally opened as Bailey’s Automotive in 1990 and then we moved from the center of town to this location in 1997,” explained Dianna. “Then In 2004, we were doing a lot of lift kits and lowering kits at the time and West Coast stuff was becoming cool on those TV shows. Our sons were part of our company, so we were like, ‘Let’s do it—let’s change our name to Westcoast Auto.’” Westcoast Auto Service specializes in tire alignments and suspension work, whether it’s altered, standard, or post accident. “We do a lot of work with local body shops and other shops. We replace suspensions or if the customer is having problems, they’ll bring it here. Our guys have done so much after collision repair work that they can tell right away what’s bent and what’s not. We still do a lot of lift and lowering kits because of our desert friends and customers—we understand better angles and tire wear and tear. We also do general auto repair work,” said Dianna. The majority of their business is doing restorations and customization of classic American cars like hot rods, woodies, and a lot more. Westcoast Auto doesn’t do bodywork and paint jobs—they’re primarily known for their tire alignments and suspension work. Westcoast does exclusive restoration and customization that’s you can’t get at any other auto garage in town. “A lot of places won’t work on older vehicles. We got a lot of referrals from other shops,” said Tony. The oldest car their team has brought back to life is a THEOSIDER.COM
1927 Ford Model T, and they’ve worked on all kinds of classic cars that span the decades. Westcoast Auto Service also works in conjunction with Richard’s Mobile Tire service. He refers his customers to Westcoast that have passenger or light truck vehicles in need of tire work. They’ve been working with Richard since 2009. When it comes to recycling, Westcoast Auto recycles all things like oil, tires, scrap metal, normal cans, bottles, and trash. They have split dumpsters so they can recycle all their boxes and other things separately. Westcoast Auto is a small tight-knit family run operation that takes pride in their craft and their city. If you need a tire alignment, brake job, suspension work, restoration, customization, or more; make sure to take your vehicle to WCA— Scott, Dianna, Tony, Chris, and their team of automotive specialists will take complete care of you and all your auto needs. 56

if you’re an expert—Gypsy Soul Dreaming is the place for you and owner Elise will be there with her number one employee, Chloe, to explain it all. Elise Cardwell started out selling her handcrafted dream catchers on Etsy.com and at Oceanside’s local street fair, Sunset Market. “I wanted to open a workshop. I really wanted to be in Artist Alley and be able to support other artists. This space opened up and with the help of family, especially my father who built most the furniture. We had our Grand opening in May of 2017,” said Elise. In addition to participating in the First Friday Art Walk, she’s a sponsor of the Artist Alley Interactive held every Saturday from 10am to 4pm, where local artists are invited to show and sell their work outside. Originally from the Sacramento area, this mother of two moved to Oceanside in the late 90s. Elise said she’s always been interested in everything and anything creative. Collecting rocks as a child eventually morphed into collecting crystals and learning about their healing properties. “I set out to make wearable crystals using custom jewelry specific to each individual,” she added. Beside the dream catchers and beautiful pieces of handmade jewelry and home decor, Gypsy Soul Dreaming is also an apothecary that includes organic wrapped and blessed herbs, incense, and dried flowers. She has a wide array of rough stones and tumbled palm (touchstones), pocket stones, as well as pyramids, points, and wands. Her services include tarot readings, crystal consultations, and Reiki sessions. Also on her events calendar are full moon and new moon rituals and workshops teaching “Mindful Meditation” and skills like wire wrapping, macramé, or dream catcher creating. Elise is welcome to the changes happening on her street: “When I first moved here, there was an over abundance of military surplus stores and dry cleaners, and now we have so many amazing restaurants and coffee shops to enjoy. I love 58

being located in downtown Oceanside, and I’m grateful to be part of this community.” She likes to think of her shop as, “a secret that I want you to tell your friends.” After your visit, you’ll want to spread the word because Gypsy Soul Dreaming will be your first stop any time you feel the need to bring home a little bit of magic.

PHOTOS COURTESY OF COOMBER WINES
Will getting his pour on.
Located on the west side of Mission Avenue, Coomber Craft Wines is offering a great and fun wine experience right here in Oceanside. Skip and Maureen Coomber started with a few other investors and opened a winemaking facility in Santa Barbara in 2008, and by 2009, they had their first vintage wines. Fast-forward to 2019, and the opening of their tasting room, Skip and Maureen have taken all their knowledge and love and are sharing it with our community. The first thing you’ll notice when you walk in is the amazing decor and the welcoming vibe— there’s no pretentiousness to this wine room. There’s also a large great outside patio that hosts local musicians like Shane Hall and friends. The wine is what really brings it all together! If you love white wines, the Lemon Cake Chardonnay is a must. From the Russian River, this zesty clean delicious wine will definitely satisfy the biggest wine connoisseur.
If you’re more into reds, the 2013 Private Reserve from the Santa Rita Hills is amazing. With notes of berries and vanilla kept in 50-percent French oak barrels, this lovely unique wine is a personal favorite. With so many different wines on offer from Rieslings to Cabernets, there’s always something for everyone. It’s awesome to try all the styles and then discuss and share them with friends new and old. If you consider yourself a wine person, Coomber is a must! The knowledgeable staff and management (including Will “The Wine Guy” from Fox 5 San Diego) have a wealth of information and are extremely friendly and approachable. There are so many more positive things to say it’s hard to put all of them into words, so if you like great wine and friendly local vibes—do yourself a favor see what everyone’s talking about at Coomber Craft Wines.

BLADE 1936 WORDS: AARON SCHMIDT PHOTOS: ZACH CORDNER
Fresh Cocktails
Officially opened for business last September, Blade 1936 has quickly become the destination for authentic modern Italian cuisine right here in Oceanside. Located in the historic BladeTribune Newspaper building on Seagaze Drive, Blade 1936 pays homage to the newspaper days of yesteryear. Designed and built in 1936 by legendary San Diego architect Irving Gill, Blade 1936’s building is a modern mix of Art Deco, and local architect Kennith Chriss added the newer rustic, wood, and steel features, while keeping it historically intact. Managing partners John Carlo (J.C.) Ferraiuolo [GM and Head Pizza Chef] and Chef Mario Cassineri [Culinary Director] are the masterminds behind Blade 1936 and run the day-to-day operations. “The main idea was to bring the building back to life and to keep the BladeTribune News alive because it was buried for so many years. After the Blade-Tribune, this building was a used furniture store and it was pretty beat up. They covered the original sign with plaster,” explained J.C. “Once we took over the building and started cleaning it up, as we were chipping off the original THEOSIDER.COM
Margherita Pizza
plaster that was outside, we realized that the original sign was still underneath. So after about two months of cleaning, we chiseled it all out and brought it back to close to its original state,” he added. “There’s still a printing press buried in our space next door.” With two private dining rooms, a central bar, and an exclusive lounge area, Blade 1936’s space is massive at around 6,000 square feet. Framed newspaper articles line the interior walls, as well as mosaics made out of wine boxes. Their walls also feature local artists’ work, as well, and there’s even a time capsule in the floor. When it comes to the menu, Blade 1936 uses both locally sourced and imported Italian ingredients. Using non-GMO flour and natural fermentation, the pizza dough is made in-house with flour, cheese, tomatoes, and olive oil all imported straight from Italy. Cured meats like Prosciutto and salami are also imported. “We make fresh pastas in house everyday and we like to promote our wood fired pizzas,” said J.C. Blade 1936 crafts house-made Napoli-style wood fired pizzas using a custom-made Stefano Ferrara pizza brick oven from Italy. “That oven is different, not everyone is capable of using an oven like that. It retains a lot of heat. It’s a little different from other ovens that are domestically 62

made—they don’t heat up quite as well and they don’t retain the same amount of heat, so you don’t get the same final result,” J.C. explained. With table-sized portions perfect for sharing, popular menu items include the Seared Pacific Yellowtail, Carbonara, Margherita Pizze, Affumicata Pizze Bianche, Prosciutto & Arugula Pizze, Frittura Mista, Blade Bison Meatballs (my personal fave), fresh cocktails, Dueling Caprese, and also the gloriously decadent dessert Blade Sweet Basket that’ll have your taste buds doing backflips in your mouth. Other menu items include crafted Semolina pastas, innovative desserts, Italian bottled beer, wines, and local and international beers on tap. Their menu is also tailored for children and those following gluten-free diets, and there’s a Vegan menu option, too. Blade 1936 is open every day for dinner from 4 to 10pm and serves brunch 10am to 2pm on the weekends, so cruise on in for a taste of the old world—you’ll be glad you did!

WARAII SUSHI

Seafood Udon Noodles
On the southeast corner of Oceanside Boulevard and College Avenue is a shopping center full of hidden gems. One of these treasures is Waraii Sushi. Ben Lee and Romi Ko have owned Waraii for over ten years now. About five years ago, they moved into their current location and are staying put for a while. Starting off small with only three employees at their first restaurant, the customers kept coming. To better accommodate this growth, they decided to expand and move into a bigger space. Waraii Sushi is a beautiful eatery with a small sushi bar and a full menu. They also have recently opened a second restaurant in Escondido, but they like this community as well, so they’ve decided to keep both restaurants open and make the commute work. Having moved here from Korea, the restaurant industry called to them and has been a great business for them to build a life here. Romi likes owning the restaurant because of you—the customer. “The customers are my favorite part,” said Romi. The restaurant has helped her grow and learn and be more of a part of our fabulous community. THEOSIDER.COM
Ben has long time experience in sushi and Chinese restaurants, so they were able to bring influences from several Asian cultures. Their menu is created by the duo calling on Japanese, Chinese, and Korean cultures. That’s what makes Waraii Sushi so special. They can blend ideas and flavors from these three countries and create a fabulous Asian fusion dining experience. The menu is a wonderful combination of fresh sashimi, beautiful pieces of nigiri, and fun creative rolls. They also serve beer and sake, as well as a great lunch special. The restaurant is comfortable— the perfect place for lunch or dinner with the whole family, or an afternoon Sapporo with sushi snack. Their bowl of seafood udon noodles is an ideal fix for these chilly winter ways that are headed this way. Romi and Ben are hard working, kind and humble. They’ve dedicated their lives to creating a restaurant that has a lovely ambiance and serves good food that they’re very proud of. Always trying to come up with new ideas and plates to make the customers happy, they’ll soon be serving ramen, and adding a happy hour to their menu, as well. 64

With so many great restaurant options in Oceanside, Waraii Sushi is another one you can add to the list. Whether you live out this way, or are looking for an excuse to get away from the crowded coastal communities, Ben and Romi will treat you like family and make sure you leave with a full belly and a smile on your face!
