mustard seed flowers light up our hillsides beautifully, the beaches get packed to the gills, and people shed their winter clothes for boardshorts and bikinis. Everyone seems just a bit happier in general. It’s a great time to cruise the coast, take an evening stroll downtown, or BBQ at one of our amazing public parks. Whatever it is that we do, let’s do it with a smile on our faces and a kind heart. Let’s make sure we give a warm “hello” to passers by, hold the door for the elderly, and
most importantly—remember that Oceanside is already an amazing place, but a little positivity can go a long way. So let’s do our part to keep our community the best in San Diego County. All it takes is a hello and a smile to make someone’s day, so give it a try and see how good it feels. The karma points you’ll receive are just the icing on the cake.

It’s official—spring has sprung, the flowers are in bloom, and the sun is shining on our smiling faces. What a great time of year. The springtime represents a time for fun and activities, a window to toss out our inhibitions and throw a little bit of caution to the wind. Maybe we get so excited because it’s the gateway to summertime. Maybe it’s because the weather gets nice and warm, who really knows? I do know this: Oceanside is the place to be when the season comes around. The

Since it was founded in 1978, Bob’s Clock Shop has been a mainstay in the San Diego area. Bob Bixler and his original business partner, Bob Tap, opened their first location on El Camino Real. In 1983, they moved to Carlsbad for 36 years until happily settling into their current location in South O last year. Co-owner, operator, and homegrown local, Dan Gascon started working for Bob in 1999 as a repairman and became his partner in the business in 2008. Dan learned his Horology skills (the art of making clocks and watches, technically defined as the study and measurement of time) from Bob and in his own words through “lots of trial and error.” Throughout their 42 years, Bob’s clock Shop has sold over 4,000 Grandfather clocks throughout the United States, and they’re still repairing and maintaining most of those clocks today. Dan has been to every state in the US at least twice, putting more than 456,000 miles on his truck, while delivering, moving, and acquiring these delicate works of art. “We not only service clocks in the area, but we also move Grandfather clocks across the country. Most moving companies are afraid to handle these fragile, expensive pieces so our customers entrust us with their irreplaceable antiques,” said Dan. Bob’s Clock Shop imports Grandfather, Cuckoo, and Mantel clocks, as well as the
“movements,” which are the works inside of a clock. Individuals create custom clocks, buying the movements and then building the housing. Even though these beautiful clocks are considered a luxury item, they’ve recently seen a renewed interest as the next generation inherits timepieces from family members. Repairs keep their business steady, but $5.00 watch battery replacements keep the days busy and keep their loyal customers coming back. They usually have about twenty or so clocks on hand being repaired, and approximately 100 on display for sale. Most mornings find Dan making house calls, while his wife Alisha covers the shop. The couple and their two youngest children like to spend their free time on their fishing boat, which they’ve kept in the harbor for seven years. “It was a no brainer to make the move to Oceanside,” said Bob. “This is where Dan was born and raised, and his goal is to continue to serve our customers and grow with the South Oceanside community.” “I love the changes that are happening right now,” said Dan. “I think it’s fantastic. My hope is that the city will continue growing South O, adding more restaurants down this way. My only wish is that Coast Highway was still named Hill Street. To me, it’ll always be Hill Street.”

During last year’s harvest event, the City of Oceanside and Produce Good collected over 7,000 pounds of produce donated by Oceanside residents. Let’s make it a goal to reach 10,000! Mayor’s Challenge for Water Conservation: April 1st through April 30th The Mayor’s Challenge is a friendly competition between thousands of cities across the United States to see which city can motivate the most residents to pledge to conserve water and be more sustainable. Mayor Peter Weiss is challenging Oceanside residents to go online to mywaterpledge.com and take the pledge to help Oceanside win the title of “Most WaterWise” city. Residents who take the pledge have a chance to win prizes including paid utilities, gift cards, water-reducing fixtures, and more! Oceanside made a valiant effort last year, finishing third in its population bracket. Take the pledge from April 1 to April 30 and help Oceanside secure the win and take first place in the 2020 Mayor’s Challenge! 17
Green Oceanside Kitchen Food Preservation Workshop: Saturday April 11 Learn how to transform backyard produce into tasty preserved treats! This workshop will provide participants with ideas on how to preserve backyard crops and reduce food waste through zero waste cooking demonstrations and sampling. Oceanside’s Finest features those that made Oceanside the awesome city it is today, and Marie Town is currently shaping the future for our most valuable community members—our youth. Marie is the Principal Librarian of Youth Services with the Oceanside Public Library. Her passion and career revolve around ensuring our youth succeed. Captivated by Oceanside’s outdoor lifestyle, Marie can often be seen out and about training in Oceanside on her own, or with Oceanside Multisport Group (OMG). Marie is a native of south San Diego. She grew up loving the library and always knew she wanted to be a librarian. She attended University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and received both her bachelor’s and master’s degree in Library & Information Science. After college, she returned to San Diego and distributed her resume. Oceanside was fortunate to have an open position, and hired her as the Children’s Librarian. She officially made Oceanside home in 2008. Since her hire, Marie has shaped the thoughtful growth of the youth services departments throughout Oceanside’s public library system. “Through the library, there are a lot of opportunities to connect and improve quality of
life, especially for our youth,” said Marie. She’s incorporated programs like 1000 books before Kindergarten, Homework Helpers, STEAM camps, Toddler & Baby Story Times, Tween Book Clubs, and so much more. She believes, “it’s about the people and building relationships by getting to know the families and how we can help them with our services.” Both branches offer digital programs, and place toys in a play area to engage the children that visit—carving out a safe space where

Expanding its inclusion, Marie and the Oceanside Public Library recently received a grant to support those living with autism with an autism-friendly lending library and family events. “The library is constantly changing and evolving, but always providing access to information,” said Marie. 18
Marie loves how Oceanside is “communitycentric,” and each institution rallies behind our youth. As the co-chairman of Early Childhood Success, she proudly incorporates the Oceanside Promise of “bringing the community together to ensure Oceanside’s children and young adults reach their fullest potential in college, career and life,” with the library as an integral piece of that puzzle. Literacy Through Art is a prosperous community-supported program that unites Oceanside Public Library, Oceanside Museum of Art, and Oceanside Unified School District to encourage student’s exploration of arts and literacy. Outside of the library, Marie helps shape Oceanside as a haven for athletes. Since moving to Oceanside, she’s found her niche as a triathlete with a supporting community of swimmers, runners, and bikers in her hometown. Marie proudly adorns her Oceanside Multisport Group apparel while training throughout the city, and Camp Pendleton. She looks forward to competing in Oceanside’s ½ Ironman on April 4th, hoping to beat her time from her first Oceanside ½ Ironman in 2019. Marie's passion and dedication to our community is what makes her one of Oceanside's Finest.

Things You Didn’t Know about

Many people would agree that being a lifeguard sounds like a coveted position. Sand, surf, and sun … what’s not to love? But Oceanside Lifeguards have a serious job—implied by their job description—guarding lives. Whether answering questions about the water temperature to watching for swimmers caught in rip currents, lifeguards have to be ready for anything and quick to assess and respond. Oceanside beaches have an average of 5 million visitors each year and an average of 2,500 people are rescued from the ocean by Oceanside Lifeguards. In addition, over 4,000 people are treated for first aid and medical needs. For over 90 years, Oceanside’s beaches have been guarded by lifeguards who strive to keep people safe.

guarded swimmers, one of the first mentions of a lifeguard in Oceanside was W. A. Howard, an “experienced Naval swimming instructor,” who provided swimming lessons for $5 a course. He was hired as a lifeguard at the Oceanside Bath House and Plunge in 1920.

One of the first water rescues recorded was in 1896 when the Oceanside Blade reported: “Miss Gertie Libby went beyond the breakers Sunday while bathing and became exhausted in trying to return. Mr. French, of San Luis Rey, went out after her with a rope, but was taken with a cramp and had to be helped in himself. Miss Libby was unconscious when rescued. Her escape from death and watery grave was the cause of many congratulations by her many friends. It is understood that Mr. French was quite ill from the effects of his heroic efforts to save her life, he being past middle age and unaccustomed to the water and such extreme exertion.” While it had long been advertised that Oceanside’s beaches were the safest in San Diego County, there was no denying that a lifeguard was needed. While it appears that various persons may have unofficially
It wasn’t until the tragic drowning death of George F. Stockton, who drowned while being pulled under in a rip current in August of 1921, that real action was taken. The Oceanside Chamber of Commerce sought to raise funds for “life saving equipment” at the beach. H. W. Laskey was appointed to investigate, and he reported that he had been to several beach resorts in the county and had interviewed life-saving experts. He reported that the sum of $250 would adequately provide what was needed to protect beachgoers at Oceanside. This would include a sixteen-foot lifeboat; two metal buoys of “the modern torpedo type” and two round life buoys. Laskey also looked into organizing “a crew in the use of the apparatus and boat.” The Chamber agreed to donate $160 and then requested that the manager of the Bathhouse to make up the rest. However, Oceanside seemed ill equipped to handle a life saving emergency. In 1922, one year after the drowning death of Stockton, the Chamber was still trying to organize a crew for operating the equipment they purchased the year before. The City Deputy Marshal then announced a practice would be held and urged everyone to be present to form a needed crew for the lifeboat.

For years, it was largely the opinion of many that the owner/manager of the Bath House was responsible for any lifeguard and maintaining needed equipment. This was debated for several years, and any lifeguarding at Oceanside beaches was limited to the Fourth of July holiday and weekend. In 1923, Bath House manager M. W. Dalby placed an ad in the Oceanside Blade 24
newspaper looking for a “good strong swimmer for lifeguard on the beach.” It wasn’t until 1925 when the City Council decided it was necessary to employ a lifeguard for the 4th of July weekend and requested the Street Committee (of all things) to do so. The earliest lifeguard hired by the City was likely Theodore C. Johnson (in 1925 and then again in 1930). John McGarvin, a local fisherman, was paid $18 in 1927 to serve as a lifeguard at the beach.

In 1928, the official City Lifeguard was Werner H. Peterson, who helped to implement a Junior Lifeguard program. Knute Wernmark, of the San Diego chapter of the American Red Cross, instructed six Oceanside boys “in towing a victim by means of four different carries, breaking three different death grips, and applying artificial respiration.” Arthur Webler, Alex Cory, Robert Trotter, Morris Clark, John Ueltschi, and Robert Clark all demonstrated their newly learned skills.

In the 1930s, Oceanside was guarded by Bill Stromberg, Victor Magee and Larry Sherwood—each serving as lifeguard separately. Magee, who was also an early Oceanside surfer, wrote an article for the newspaper entitled “Some Timely Don’ts On How To Keep Out Of Danger and Avoid Hazards While Bathing.” His advice included the following: “Always, if possible, swim where there is a lifeguard station. Don’t take rubber play equipment, such as tubes, large balls, beyond your depth. Such equipment is dangerous as often it bursts and leaves the person using it without support, and if that person is not a good swimmer he is placed in a grave danger.

In 1942, the City of Oceanside increased its lifeguard staff from one to two. Dean Markem and James Riddle were “placed on the city payroll at salaries of $125 a month” with Billy Thomas appointed as relief and extra guard. Doug Tico

became a lifeguard at the age of sixteen in 1944. He remembers that he was the only lifeguard that summer until Tommy Williams joined him. Doug used his own vehicle—a 1939 Ford convertible— for rescues when needed. When he and Tommy wanted the day off together so they could “take their girls out for the day,” they would simply hire Don McDonald to take over for them!

In January 1943, an observation tower that was at the end of the pier fell off and floated down near the San Luis Rey River. The city brought it back to the pier and used it to build Oceanside’s first lifeguard tower! By 1947, there were three lifeguard towers placed on the beach and the number to dial in case of an emergency was 5116, which connected the lifeguard stations.

In 1950, Byron Jessup was appointed Captain of the Lifeguards. A lifeguard for five years previous, he was credited with saving the lives of “scores of bathers.” Richard E. Geyer, Doug Tico, and Bruce Monroe were hired that year to assist Jessup. The newspaper reported: “With the purchase of an emergency jeep, a number of new torpedo rescue tubes, new jackets, a strong pair
of binoculars, and other items of equipment, the Oceanside lifeguards will be one of the best equipped teams on the Pacific Coast. All of the guards are seasoned veterans in the latest lifesaving and beach safety techniques.” John Oakley, also hired in 1950, remembered that there was a line of floats south of the pier used to keep people from drifting under the pier into the pilings. He said that lifeguards would use the hollow rescue boards to surf. They would fill up with water, and he’d have to empty them after each ride. In the 1950s, the first female lifeguards were hired: Joan Nelson and Bette Jo Hoskins. In 1959, twelve lifeguards were hired to protect swimmers: Carl Miller (captain), Rick Wykoff (lieutenant), along with Tillman Eakes, Cramer Jackson, John Damian, James Stockdale, Mark Rose, Rick Ringsmuth, Robert McEwen, Robert Dawley, David Lovell, and John Susi.

The Oceanside Lifeguard Division incorporated into the Oceanside Fire Department in 2009. Prior to that time, lifeguards were under the Harbor and Beaches Department. Today, seven permanent lifeguards—one Captain, two Lieutenants, and four Sergeants—protect Oceanside’s beaches. A total of 93 lifeguards are hired seasonally and they’re on duty from 8am to sundown. Lifeguards do much more than watch for swimmers at risk, as 48 lifeguards are certified Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs). They also are responsible for Rescue Vessels and Marine Safety, Swiftwater and Flood Rescue Teams (who rescue trapped victims and vehicles in flood waters); Public Safety Dive Teams for submerged search and rescue, search and recovery incidents in the ocean, as well as lakes, rivers, and ponds.

prepared, and at times, legendary. Oceanside Lifeguard David Wilson was the sole recipient for the Governor’s Public Safety Officer Medal of Valor in 2017. He was the first Lifeguard to receive the Medal of Valor award since Ocean Lifeguards were included in 2015. Oceanside is a golf mecca. If you think about it, we’ve got every kind of golf course here. From the chill vibes at Emerald Isle and Goat Hill Park to the high-end upscale courses like Arrowood and local perennial hangouts like Oceanside Municipal Golf Course, there’s basically not one city in all of Southern California that has that much range in golf courses like we do. For such a small town like ours to have that much golf diversity really is amazing. It’s all part of the fabric that makes up Oceanside. For this issue, we’ve highlighted our four favorite golf courses in town. So read on and learn a thing or two—it’ll for sure make you want to get out there and hit the links, ditch your phone, and soak it all in. 27

Located in the beautiful Arrowood community, Arrowood Golf Course is a pristine golf course with lush green rolling hills, immaculate fairways, ponds with beautiful water fowl, and breathtaking views of the San Marcos Mountains. It’s easy to get caught up in the wide-open 140-acre surroundings at Arrowood, as the golf course is located in a picturesque canyon complete with cactuses and boulders lining the course—an undeveloped riparian habitat, if you will. The youngest of all the golf courses in Oceanside, Arrowood is privately owned by a Korean family and was established in 2013. A major plus at Arrowood (besides the scenery) has to be the Fairways Kitchen & Bar. It’s an amazing spot to get some great food and beer after you finish on the links—championing your day with that unthinkable birdie or drowning your sorrows for that last triple bogey. Featuring live music every Friday, Fairways Kitchen & Bar is a great place to relax and unwind in a super comfortable setting—the outside patio fireplace is a nice touch. In terms of playability, the course stretches out to almost 7,000 yards— all the way from the tips. This is crazy because being almost 7,000 yards and only being a Par 71 offers a lot of challenge to golfers who want to play from the championship tees. “It reaches all levels. It’s a very golfer friendly golf course and it can be a very challenging golf course,” said Mike Duncan, director of golf sales. “We have some of the best finishing holes in San Diego County.” The Quandry (15th, 16th, 17th, and 18th holes) can kill your round of the day. This final stretch of golf holes play like a PGA Tour style course—it’s either going to be the round of your dreams or a complete nightmare to your scorecard. On the 16th hole (a 465-yard monster), when the pin is placed in the back right portion of the green, you can’t help but notice the water surrounding the hole and the Death Star-shaped bunker staring you right in the eyes. The Dreamkiller is real.

Situated at 660 South El Camino Real (adjacent to the Oceana retirement community), Emerald Isle Golf Course originally opened in 1966 as a nine-hole full-length golf course, and then in the 1970s, it switched to an eighteen-hole executive. After taking over in 2015, it’s currently owned and operated by John and Holly Kennedy. “They’re both PGA professionals, which is a rare thing to have PGA professionals own and operate a golf course. They’ve put a lot of effort into renovating the course and have done an amazing job. They came in during the drought time and water is crazy expensive. Keeping the greens and tee boxes lush and green has been their main focus,” said Emerald Isle manager Curtis Baker. Emerald Isle is very beginner friendly and features two Par 4 holes. The best part about EI is its location, as all the holes have lots of trees. It gives the feeling of a regulation-sized course, even though all but two holes are Par 3s. It’s shorter and friendlier for kids and beginners, but at the same time it’s narrow and challenging enough that it’s tough for an advanced golfer, as well. “It takes about a two and a half hours to play a round. On the long side it’s about three hours. We’ll have some guys play about two-three rounds here in one day,” explained Curtis. “The biggest thing for us is that golf is affordable—for $20 or $25 dollars, you can get out there and play a round with a cart and it’s twelve dollars to walk a round in the afternoon.” Overall, Emerald Isle is a super fun executive golf course with probably the most relaxed vibe of all the golf courses in Oceanside. From sun up to sun down, you can play a round in t-shirts, shorts, and flip-flops—as long as you have clothes on, you’re good to go. And when it comes to the people at Emerald Isle, it’s kind of like the TV show Cheers, but instead of a bar where everyone knows your name—it’s a golf course.

First opened in 1952 as Oceanside/Carlsbad Country Club (in the 1980s it became Center City Golf Course), Goat Hill Park is a legendary 84-acre golf course that’s famous not only here in Oceanside, but also around the world as players from all corners of the globe flock to Goat to challenge themselves on it’s tricky fairways and greens. Goat Hill is a “short course”—a hybrid of an executive course and a regulation course. “We took it over in July 2014. Four of us— John Ashworth, Peter Beames, Jeff Cunningham, and I—are the four original Goat Hill partners,” said Dave Emerick, local PGA pro and founder of the NCJGA (North County Junior Golf Association). “We had to do a three million dollar renovation, which was during the drought, so we called the water district and they gave us turf reduction funds to fix up the course. We water the fairways with reclaimed water, and for the greens—we use regular potable water. We’re definitely very water conscious.” Goat Hill features nine Par 4s, eight Par 3s, and one Par 5 on the 15th hole. “It’s good for all ages and skill levels. We have different tees, like the Mini Goat tees—our kid’s course has all Par 3s— and we also have the three-hole Playground. “Our motto is ‘Everyone’s always welcome,’ and ‘World Class for the Working Class.’ We’re stoked just trying to make golf fun,” said Dave. If you’re looking to get some good exercise, you can always walk the course. If you choose to walk it, make sure to carry a light bag with fewer clubs, as it’s fun to try to hit different and creative shots when doing so. Or you can just rent a cart and drink beer like the rest of us. It should be noted that the dress code at Goat Hill is super relaxed— good music is usually playing on the loudspeaker and you can play in a t-shirt and flip-flops. Dogs are welcome at Goat Hill, as they were one of the first golf courses to allow them. “Five years ago, it was unheard of. John got the idea from playing golf in Scotland. When he lived there, he was a member at Gullane and they allowed dogs there,” said Dave. In terms of playability, Goat Hill offers a lot of visual illusions—even though the course may seem straightforward, it can really sneak up behind you and you may find yourself in a bit of a bind. The term is called getting “goated.” If you’re an experienced player or even a mediocre one, it really doesn’t matter—you will get goated. “It’s a difficult course and it’s challenging, but it’s really for everybody,” smiled Dave.

Originally owned and operated by the City of Oceanside since 1973, Oceanside Golf Course (or as it’s still called by locals—“Oceanside Municipal” or “Oceanside Muni”) has been a staple in the Oceanside golf community for the past 47 years. It’s neatly situated on a pristine plot of roughly 140 acres of undisturbed hillsides and native habitat of the San Luis Rey Valley. Area-wise, it’s a pretty massive golf course and is neatly nestled against the southeast side of Camp Pendleton. Local golf pro Fred Wood has taught golf classes, managed the pro shop, and has run local tournaments at Oceanside Muni for the past 31 years. Fred’s legendary and quite a character and will show you the ropes on becoming a better golfer. Fred and his assistant instructor, PGA Apprentice Zach Weisenburger, are available at the golf course every daily to help you with every aspect of your game. Forever the perennial golf hangout in Oceanside, the entire staff at Oceanside Muni is very friendly and helpful and will make your golfing experience a memorable one. With its narrow fairways and receptive greens and solid layout, Oceanside Golf Course is a hidden gem that offers up a fun (and fair) challenge to every golfer. A lot of the holes don’t have any rough, as they’ve installed decomposed granite to save water. Water conservation is a key focus at Oceanside Muni. A popular favorite, the 13th hole offers an amazing hilltop panoramic view of the entire golf course, giving you a completely different perspective of Oceanside. The greens are always in a tournament-style condition—some days you may find yourself putting on greens that are faster than most courses in all of San Diego County. Overall, it’s a challenging and fun full-size golf course that’s very “high handicap” friendly and it won’t break the bank—you just need to bring your “A” game to play well here.

Oceanside is a city rich in cultural diversity. Our community is made up of all walks of life from many different backgrounds, making it a perfect breeding ground for artists, musicians, and other creative-types to flourish here in our fine city by the ocean. In terms of art, these murals represent the voice of our community expressed through our local mural artists communicating their personal story or vision to our visitors and residents alike. This past February, the Oceanside Museum of Art launched its inaugural “Oceanside Mural Walk” in the Oceanside Cultural District, and the next one is slated for April 4th, starting at OMA from 10-11:30am. The mural tour is a great way to get some good exercise while you appreciate these amazing local works of art. With so many magnificent murals around our city, these are just twenty of our favorites along the Coast Highway corridor. There are so many amazing people in our beautiful beach town that it can be tough to choose whom to feature for our “Homegrown” column. We usually feature those truly outstanding citizens that are not only locals, but they live, work and breathe #TeamOceanside. They stand out due to their contributions to our close-knit community, and they often quietly carry a story of triumph and tremendous perseverance. This article features that special someone who truly embodies these characteristics. Not only has Dr. Jessica Poumele served her community as a long time educator within Oceanside Unified School District, but she has also persevered through recent hardships that’d bring even the strongest men to their knees. Jessica has been through it all and she has done so with endless courage, grace, and for those of you who know her—always impeccably dressed and in a knockout pair of heels! Jessica’s military family moved to Oceanside when she was seven years old. She attended San Rafael Elementary on Camp Pendleton, then Jefferson Middle and graduated from Oceanside High School. During her junior year, she met her lifelong love, Pulu Poumele. Yes, she was the beautiful cheerleader and he was the star football player. This powerhouse couple went off to the University of Arizona together where Pulu was drafted to the Cleveland Browns. Yes, this really is the stuff that dreams are made of! In 1998, Pulu was chosen as an offensive lineman for the San Diego Chargers, and they were happy to be back home. THEOSIDER.COM
Shortly afterwards, Jessica was recruited by Principal Kimo Marquardt to be the OHS cheerleading coach. It was during this opportunity that Jessica realized she loved education, went back to school for her teaching credential, and started working with Special Education students. Jessica’s professionalism, hard work, and laser-like focus have helped her ascend OUSD’s ranks quickly as she became Assistant Principal at OHS and then Principal of Santa Margarita Elementary, Principal of Clair Burgener AARC program that allows credit deficient students to graduate on time using online courses, as well as allows motivated students to accelerate and graduate early. She’s now Coordinator of Career Technical Education (CTE) for OUSD and looks forward to continuing her life in education. Jessica has shown remarkable perseverance in the face of adversity because in 2016, she and her beautiful family were dealt a shocking blow when Pulu succumbed to a heart attack at only 44 years of age. Our entire community was devastated by this tragic loss. Jessica shared that this was such a difficult time for her as she always expected to grow old with Pulu, but she stayed strong for her five children PJ (now 22), Lemautofi (16), Taimane (14), Manaia (11), and Ali’itoa (8). Facing this terrible loss and the new reality of life without her love could have drowned anyone else, but Jessica showed the utmost of grace—she kept her head high and dove back 42

into work at CBA. Only a year after Pulu’s untimely death, Jessica was thrown yet another setback this time with her own health. She suffered a debilitating stroke that paralyzed her left side leaving her unable to speak. Again, anyone of us would’ve thrown in the towel, but not Jessica. She dedicated herself to daily physical therapy and has recuperated beautifully. Jessica shared that it was her children and the kids at CBA that got her talking again as they encouraged her daily and she’s never looked back! There’s absolutely no keeping her down and that’s the way we like it. We look forward to seeing more of Dr. Jessica Poumele’s triumphs for many years to come and know that she’ll always shine as an Osider.

HOW TO MAKE CARROT TOP PESTO & ROASTED CARROTS WITH SANTOSHA NUTRITION'S LIZ MURPHY PHOTOS: ZACH CORDNER
Roasting carrots in carrot top pesto is a perfect way to use the whole vegetable and learn to start cooking with less waste. Pesto is so versatile; you can use whatever nuts, seeds, and greens you have on hand! Local organic carrots like these from Sand & Straw Community Farm have such a phenomenal flavor. So remember to shop local whenever you can! —Liz Murphy, Santosha Nutrition
Makes approximately 2 cups INGREDIENTS Pesto 2 garlic cloves 1/2 lemon (juiced) 1 1/2 cup fresh carrot tops, large stems removed 2 cups fresh basil leaves 1/4 cup fresh mint leaves 1/4 cup almonds 1/4 cup sunflower seeds 2 tablespoons nutritional yeast 1/4 teaspoon salt 1 cup olive oil (more if needed) 44
ROASTED CARROTS 1 large bunch of local, organic carrots (save tops for pesto) 2 tablespoons olive oil 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/8 teaspoon pepper
PREPARATION 1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. 2. Remove carrot tops from carrots, leaving 1-2 inches attached and set aside for pesto. 3. Cut carrots lengthwise in half or quarters depending on thickness. 4. Toss carrots with olive oil, and salt & pepper and place on the baking sheet—ensuring minimal overlap.
5. Bake for 25-30 minutes until easily pierced with a fork. 6. Meanwhile, make pesto. 7. Lightly chop carrot tops (large stems removed) and simmer in a small pot of water for 5-8 minutes or until the water begins to turn green. 8. Strain and allow to cool. 9. Add all ingredients except olive oil to a food processor and process on high,
while slowly adding olive oil until desired texture is achievedshould be smooth with texture from the nuts & seeds. 10. Once softened through, remove carrots and toss 3/4 cup of pesto. 11. Return carrots to oven for five more minutes until pesto is toasted. 12. Remove from oven and serve warm. 13. Save remaining pesto for salads, pasta, or a dip. 45

Have you been seeing CBD products everywhere? You’ll find it’s an ingredient in everything from lip balm, pet treats, bath bombs, chocolate, olive oil, and the list goes on. So what’s all the hype about? What really is it and is it safe? How do you use it? Will it make you high? There’s so many questions that many of us just prefer to reach for the same old Tylenol or Ibuprofen for that chronic back pain because—well, it’s safer, right? I’m here to tell you that maybe there’s another natural option that works just as well for those aches and pains or sleeplessness without damaging your stomach or creating a dependency. We’ve also been watching the growth of CBD products and wanted to share with our loyal readers a little bit of info to help you answer some of those questions, as well as helping those that are finally interested to make the leap in trying this natural supplement that can truly work wonders for the body. I met with Danilo Carvajal from March and Ash—a licensed cannabis dispensary and one of the most reputable, safe, and absolutely gorgeous stores in Vista—to get the lowdown on CBD.
First, let’s start with what CBDs are. It’s short for Cannabidiol, a cannabinoid found in the cannabis plant. It’s one of over 100 cannabinoids identified, but seems to be the new favorite. Here’s what it isn’t: It’s not Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), so it won’t produce a high because the two components react differently in the brain and body. It’s also not psychoactive, so if you want to explore the health benefits of cannabis without feeling high, then CBDs may be perfect for you! So how do you use CBDs? And what’s it good for? It can be used in so many ways! It’s available in tinctures, lotions, oils, pills, and can even be mixed into food and drinks. Basically, it can be applied topically or taken orally. If you prefer smoking or vaping, you can find “CBD only” strains or extracts aplenty. It’s good for so many things like reducing inflammation, pain, anxiety, PTSD, insomnia, etc., but mostly how you use it depends on what your needs are. For someone who has tendonitis, like myself, you can try the Papa and Barkley Releaf Balm topically to drastically reduce pain. If you’re having a hard time sleeping, 48
then you can take a few drops of Outco tincture or you can try some Protab CBD tablets. Some of the local spots that feature their brews on tap include Pier View Coffee Co, O’side Bakery, Barrel Republic, Brown Cup Café & Lounge, Stratford at the Harbor, and Stay Golden Coffee Company. “My humble dream is to someday have my kids work for Moonglade and continue on as a local family business. We tried the distribution and grocery store scene and it was going well, but there was no personal connection or sense of community,” he added. “We really enjoy meeting other local business owners and working together to make all of our outlandish dreams come true!”
Jason Schwartze decided to live alcohol-free after the birth of his first child, and while out to dinner or at a local event, he noticed a lack of drink options. He understood why, but his creative spirit was inspired. His thought was, “Alcohol has a social purpose and the profit margins are great for business, but why can’t non-alcoholic beverages be innovative and inviting as well?” In 2017, he set out to fill that void in the restaurant industry, and along with his wife, Elizabeth, started Moonglade Brews, specializing in small batch, locally sourced, handcrafted ginger and root beers, sodas, iced teas, and nitro coffee. Originally from the Bay Area and Utah, Jason spent ten years working for San Diego County as a park ranger and agricultural inspector. In 2009, his family settled in Oceanside where they continue to live with their three small children and their dog, Dexter. “I had always wanted a small business—nothing huge, just enough to make a living and have some
independence,” said Jason. “I used to brew my own beer in my closet and I love exploring and experimenting with new flavors. There’s history and culture in root beer and ginger beer. After traveling in Argentina and Indonesia, we recently added a yerba mate based iced tea (Tereré). Moonglade currently carries over twodozen organic non-alcoholic beverages, such as pineapple and wild blueberry sodas, spiced apple cider and guava, and watermelon ginger beer. Moonglade sells their brews and seasonal flavors by the keg and run as a turnkey operation. They provide the kegerators and handle the refilling, maintenance, and service calls. They also rent out their self-contained units for company workplaces and private events. Their production facility, located in the Copperwood Center, suits them just fine since their biggest supporters are located in town. “We don’t need to look any further than Oceanside at this point because of the amazing venues and 50

In every town, there’s always a strip mall with one restaurant that’s so unassuming we tend to overlook it. We drive by it for weeks thinking, “I wonder how the food is?” Then finally one day we stop in and order up blindly only to find out that we should’ve been eating here since the jump. That’s how I felt when I finally tried out Sunshine Kitchen. Located across the street from Oceanside High School, Owners David Jardon and Miki Uno are putting out top-level ramen, curries, and plate lunches that’ll tickle your taste buds without emptying your pockets. Chef Miguel Jardon orders everything locally and takes pride in using the freshest ingredients for the recipes that come from Miki’s Japanese heritage. Miki’s son Kohei handles the front of the house and makes sure you get great service to match the amazing food being served. My favorite dish has got to be the Japanese curry with chicken or pork cutlet steamed rice, boiled egg and side salad with pickled ginger. So good! Another favorite is the namesake Sunshine ramen, also served with your choice of pork or chicken cutlet. This ramen boasts a home crafted white broth, but there’s no cream. Add in all the goodies like boiled egg, green onion, chili oil, mushrooms, chasu pork, and bean sprouts and its game over. The best part is the price—everything comes in under $14.00. In fact, the sunshine fries are only $5 bucks and I guarantee that you’ll be full after having them. Talk about fusion! These fries are served with tempura flakes, chicken,

spicy mayo, teriyaki sauce, and green onions. These bad boys are a definite must try. The lesson here is to slow down, get off the beaten path, and try that one place you drive by everyday. Newly located on the corner of El Camino Real and Oceanside Boulevard, The Breakfast Mug is here to serve in a location that hasn’t offered a whole lot of breakfast and lunch options in the area in the past. Owner Omar Garcia and his wife Fabiola love the laid-back blue-collar vibe we have here in Oceanside. Right away, they knew this was the place to start their business. They created the concept three years ago, and along with their two kids Alan (nine) and Mateo (five), they’ve planted their roots and are looking forward to a solid future here in O’side. The Mug menu is small and clean with a ton of flavor on tap. Take Fabs Spicy melt, for instance. It’s loaded with three scrambled eggs, ham, cheese, grilled onions, and chipotle peppers piled high on toasted sourdough. The best part is the
price; it’ll only set you back a cool $9.75. Pair this with a fresh cup of locally sourced coffee and it’s a wrap. There are also quite a few veggie options on the menu, as well. Items such as their delicious Avocado Toast, Nutella Strawberry French Toast, and an amazing Veggie Omelet. Sourcing locally is a big must for Omar. He understands just how important serving quality food while supporting local vendors is. When one small business supports another only good things will happen. We agree and it shows with everything on the menu. The wait staff is very attentive and will keep your water topped off and your coffee nice and hot. So next time you’re rolling down El Camino Real, stop by and give them a go. I promise that you’ll be back for more. I know I will. 56
