SET IN STONE A word from the publisher
As the end of 2021 quickly approaches, there’s a lot to be thankful for. The first and most important thing is you—our readership, and the continued support of The Osider magazine. Thank you so much for picking up our publication each and every issue, and sharing our stories with your friends on social media platforms. It’s no secret that things have been challenging for small businesses across the board, and we have been no exception. With that said, we’d also like to send a special thank you to our advertisers—without your support we wouldn’t be able to do what we do financially. Being able to do our annual Oside Flavor event for the first time since the pandemic began was such a solid reminder of why we make magazines in the first place. Our community is so strong, and resilient—seeing everyone spending the evening together sharing the best of what Oceanside has to offer was truly inspirational. Speaking of inspiration, our annual photo issue will do just that. There are so many talented photographers in our city, and each year we choose a few of our favorites and showcase their amazing work, as we close out the year. Photography and good writing are the cornerstones of a great magazine. So, we’d also like to give a shout out to our writing staff and all of the amazing research, interviews, and creativity they bring to our magazine. We’re a small-yet-nimble business, and we pride ourselves on putting out the best product to represent our amazing city issue after issue. We here at The Osider wish each and every one reading this a great holiday season filled with friends, family, and good times. Cheers,
Jamey Stone

Oceanside's Finest JULIA FISTER
WORDS: ELIZABETH SCHWARTZE PHOTO: ZACH CORDNER
Still in the midst of a global pandemic, the lessons learned beginning March 2020 when the world went into lockdown are already being utilized to benefit Oceanside residents through Studio ACE. Julia Fister, Executive Director and Co-Founder of Studio ACE, quickly reimagined an in-person studio setting to physically get art supplies into the hands of Oceanside citizens. What could’ve been a game-ender for Studio ACE, became a game-changer. Studio ACE stands for “Arts, Community, Education.” Julia was able to engage the Oceanside community, through arts, and provide affordable and accessible art education—fulfilling both the vision, and mission. A native of St. Louis, Missouri, Julia obtained dual Bachelor’s degrees in Business, and Art. In 2001, her path led her west, and she first landed in Los Angeles, but moved to North County, San Diego, shortly thereafter. While maintaining a career in investment banking and graphic design, Julia completed her Master’s Degree in Art History through San Diego State University (SDSU). She found her way to the Oceanside Museum of Art (OMA). After just four months of being a volunteer, Julia was hired in 2010 to create and direct an education program for all fifth grade Oceanside students. Later titled “ArtQuest,” the program aims to engage every fifth grade student in Oceanside through arts. At OMA, she found her passion for arts education, and became the Director of Education. “Art is about unleashing imagination,” she explained. “It’s my passion. People can learn any subject through art.” Julia continued in that role for six and a half years, where she created a summer camp program, increased the Free Family Art Day attendance to over 5,000 family members per year, revamped the Docent Program, increased the Artist Alliance from fifteen to 25-percent of membership, created OMA’s first on-site ar t classroom, and was instrumental in developing and creating OMA’s first international traveling exhibition. With art education as her passion, the nonprofit Studio ACE was created in 2016. The mission of Studio ACE is dedicated to enriching lives through arts, community, and education. In 2018, the 608 square foot brick-and-mortar studio opened at 3861 Mission Avenue. Just a little over one year, as programming was being established, the COVID-19 global pandemic closed the studio. “How do you remain relevant and keep your mission? But we realized people needed art more than ever,” said Julia.
“I purposely chose the valley because we’re helping the citizens of Oceanside, and not just the tourists”
On March 17th, 2020, their team created 250 art kits to be distributed; which eventually led to 7,000 art kits total. Studio ACE partnered with community-oriented institutions like the Oceanside Library, Oceanside School District, USO, Oceanside Boys & Girls Club, and Solutions for Change. Starting in May 2020, they provided virtual classes for adults with developmental disabilities, and those classes still run today as they’re listed amongst the most vulnerable communities. In September 2021, Studio ACE grew, and added the “Big ACE” classroom—a 1,008 squarefoot studio dedicated to arts education, and
adorned with an impressive art mural from renowned local artist Michael Summers entitled, “Be Kind.” Located in inland Oceanside, Julia explained, “I purposely chose the valley because we’re helping the citizens of Oceanside, and not just the tourists. This is where we can reach Oceanside.” For the immediate future, Julia plans further outreach to underserved populations, and to apply for matching grants. The studio is excited about collaborations with indigineous populations, including the first Valley Arts Festival on November 6, 2020 at Heritage Park. The festival will celebrate the native Luiseño tribe and their culture. 13
As for her city that she adores, Julia emphasized, “I love going to all the other festivals. I love getting out and finding something fun to do—getting to know other parts of the city. I love going for walks at Guajome. Favorite restaurant? Fratelli’s!” Thank you, Julia, for all your hard work on behalf of Oceanside, and for getting arts into the community—at a time when it was needed more than ever imagined! SUSTAINABILITY YOU CAN TASTE!
The first weekend of October marked the 7th Annual Taste of Oceanside Event, and 2nd Annual Taste of Oceanside VIP Party, hosted by MainStreet Oceanside. The Green Oceanside team partnered with MainStreet Oceanside and sponsored both events to assist with the event’s zero waste goals by forgoing the typical single-use plastic forks, spoons, and cups normally found in the thousands at many events, and replacing them with reusables for each participant. This prevented more than 25,000 single-use utensils and over 10,000 single-use plastic cups from going into the landfill! By choosing reusables for this event, precious natural resources like water, oil, and energy are preserved for future generations, and less waste will find its way to the landfill, our waterways or the ocean. 14
During the VIP Party, members of the North County community joined MainStreet Oceanside and the Green Oceanside team to enjoy tasty treats and bites curated by special guest chefs from local Oceanside restaurants, bakeries, and breweries. Chef Luke Morganstern of Orfila Vinyards and Winery (221 N Cleveland St - www.orfila.com) provided guests with delicious culinary cuisine, created with locally sourced ingredients from North County farms and Farmers Markets. Rushell Gordon, owner of Bliss Tea and Treats (301 Mission Ave #101A - www.blissteatreats.com), designed her dessert bar to eliminate unnecessary bakery waste like single-use plates and opted for compostable napkins and pastry liners. Señor Grubby’s (311 N Tremont St - www.eatgrubbys.com) hosted drinks
and libations for the night’s festivities, and Justin Jachura highlighted what their restaurant is doing to reduce single-use plastic and non-recyclable take-out waste. These restaurants and eateries weren’t the only ones displaying their zero waste initiatives! Nicholas Arellano from local furnishing and home décor store, Previously On (105 S Coast Hwy - www.previouslyonset.com), shared how they are doing their part to reduce waste by reselling clothing, furniture, and other items from Hollywood sets! All around, the VIP Party was an AMAZING rooftop event with people from the surrounding region coming together to showcase (and taste!) Oceanside’s sustainability and zero waste movement. The City’s Green Oceanside team is dedicated 15
to protecting our environment, preserving natural resources, and improving the quality of life for residents, businesses, and visitors through programs dedicated to watershed protection, energy and climate action, zero waste, and water conservation.

PREVIOUSLY ON WORDS: AARON SCHMIDT PHOTOS: ZACH CORDNER
Located on Coast Highway, Previously On is a uniquely different resell shop. After starting the business around twelve years ago up in Burbank, owner Nick Arellano saw an opportunity here in Oceanside, so he rented a space and opened up shop for his eclectic Hollywood resell business this past March. “Once a TV show gets cancelled or wrapped, or if a pilot doesn’t get picked up, there’s all this excess stuff that they don’t need anymore. We go in there, recycle whatever we can’t use, and sell whatever we can. That’s basically how it started,” explained Nick. “The studios buy from the manufacturer and once they’re done with it, they call us up. People have a misconception that they just come and give me stuff. That’s not how it works—everything has a time that it has to be out because the studios are paying a lot in production, and they’re on tight schedules. Once a show gets cancelled, it’s like its own business— everything has to go.” At Previously On, you’ll find a smorgasbord of new and barely used items for sale that range anywhere from name brand footwear, men and women’s apparel, headwear, jewelry, appliances,
furniture, electronics, and much more that were previously on the studio set of popular TV shows like Marvel’s Runaways. “We mainly sell clothing. I’ll throw in some art, props, scripts, and stuff like that, but we’re mainly wardrobe. The brands range anywhere from Old Navy to Versace to Fendi—it’s just all over the place,” said Nick. When it comes to the products being authentic, studios can’t buy fakes—it’s illegal. If it’s high-end like Louis Vuitton or something like that, the studio will keep it because they still have a wardrobe department. But studios usually don’t have a prop department, so they don’t keep the big item stuff like furniture, fridges, stoves, or big screen TVs. “That’s where we come in,” said Nick. “We get so many clothes here at once. Show schedules are every three months, so they’ll cancel the show or it’ll go into hiatus—which is every summer and winter. We already wrapped a TV show on ABC called American Housewife that had Katy Mixon (Kenny Powers wife) in it. We have pictures of her wearing the clothes. To us, we’re not selling it as memorabilia—we’re discounting it 70-percent. Our main focus is about recycling Hollywood.” 16

Local Flavor THE OSIDER NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2021
I chose this recipe because it’s one of our favorite long-time customer Yoshi’s seasonal pick. She’s always happy when she comes by everyday with her husband Frank, and we’re always very happy to see her and serve her, too. This recipe is also very versatile, and you can alter different flavors to your liking. For example, if you have any leftovers of the apple compote recipe, you could chop that up and fold it in your next Bundt cake batter. You can add flavors and colors to your frosting to make it even more festive for the holidays. There’s already a ton of recipes out there, but I thought it’d be great to have one that’ll allow you to put in your own personality and make it just a tad more special—as we aim for every product we serve at Petite Madeline! —Chef Marc Faust
HOW TO MAKE
SPICED BUNDT CAKE With Chef Marc Faust from Petite Madeline PHOTOS: ZACH CORDNER
PREPARE A DAY BEFORE ½ cup raisins ½ cup dried cranberries 2 cups sherry wine ½ cup walnuts, chopped DRY INGREDIENTS 3 cups soft wheat flour or cake flour 1 ½ tablespoon double-acting baking powder ½ teaspoon sea salt, fine 1 tablespoon of your favorite pumpkin spice blend, cinnamon, 50/50 cinnamon and ginger WET INGREDIENTS 8 egg yolks 2 cups white sugar 1 cup butter, melted ½ buttermilk 1 tablespoon molasses ¼ cup sherry wine (from soaked dried fruits) 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Zest of half a lemon
Petite Madeline's super customer Yoshiko McLoughlin with her favorite cake.
4. Preheat oven to 350 degrees on a conventional oven, always check internal temperature with an oven thermometer instead of the dial.
FOR THE SOAK: 1 cup orange juice, plus whatever’s left of the sherry wine FROSTING INGREDIENTS 2 cups powdered sugar 2/3 cup heavy cream ½ tablespoon lemon juice ½ teaspoon vanilla extract Pinch of sea salt COMPOTE INGREDIENTS 2 tablespoons butter 4 peeled, cored, and sliced apples ½ cup brown sugar Juice of 1 lemon ½ cup sherry wine Pinch or two of pumpkin spice Pinch of sea salt A stick or two of cinnamon, and/or star anise
Preparation
5. Sift all the dry ingredients (flour, baking powder, salt), and set aside.
1. Soak raisins and cranberries in Sherry wine at least a day ahead, or prepare it even earlier up to a week. Set walnuts aside for later use. If not achievable, microwave slowly or simmer in a small pot in low heat until fruits are plumped.
6. In a clean bowl (or stand mixer bowl), whip egg yolks for few seconds to loosen up its proteins. Then add sugar and continue whisking on high until egg yolks are light yellow and airy.
2. Spray oil Bundt pans very well. Vigorously coat it afterwards with white sugar, then dump of any excess sugar by tapping lightly. 3. C reate a “cake collar” using a long sheet of aluminum. Measure the circumference of your Bundt pan, then fold in half, and set aside. 18
7. Reduce speed and slowly drizzle melted butter just until fully incorporated. If using a stand mixer, remove from stand mixer and whisk attachment. 8. With a sturdy wire whisk in flour mixture alternating with buttermilk. Make sure that the last turn will be buttermilk. Fold until somewhat combined— do not over mix.
9. Replace whisk with a sturdy rubber spatula and thrown in sherry wine, sherry-soaked fruits, walnuts, molasses, vanilla, and zest. Then fold gently until fully combined without over mixing it. Make sure to scrape the sides and bottom. Let it stand for five minutes, but no longer than that.
15. W hile still warm, brush your cake with orange juice, and whatever’s left of your sherry. Soak well—really let it soak! If necessary, poke some small holes with a toothpick. This might be necessary for those who chose to use silicone Bundt baking pans.
10. Pour in batter in prepared Bundt pans evenly. Surround the Bundt pan with cake collar. This will prevent your cake from browning too quickly and burning, and also have a more even rise and flatter “top.”
16. Let stand for few more minutes before frosting.
11. Bake at 350 degrees for fifteen minutes. 12. Reduce heat to 325 degrees for another fifteen minutes. 13. R educe heat again to 3 0 0 degrees to finish off baking for about 20-25 minutes. 14. R emove from oven and cool for about 30 minutes, or until you see the edges of the cake come off of the pan walls. Do not let cool completely or the cake will stick to your pan. Invert cake with a plate or board and let it cool further.
For frosting: In a clean bowl and using a wooden spatula (or a mixer), combine all ingredients until fully combines and uniformly smooth. Pour, pipe, or drizzle over your cake while still warm, but not too warm. Let the frosting dry or crust before cutting. For compote: Melt butter in a pan over low heat, and then remove from heat. Throw in apples, brown sugar, salt, and spices, and toss until caramelized. Add lemon juice and sherry wine. Let it simmer for few minutes until sauce is thickened and apples are tender. Serve while hot. Idea: Serve with clotted cream or whipped cream topped with pumpkin spice.

LANNIE RHOADES WORDS: JAMEY STONE PHOTO: ZACH CORDNER
BROUGHT TO YOU BY:
When I first met Lannie, he was just a wee lad pushing around at the now defunct wooden skatepark in downtown Oceanside. He was young and rattly, but was very outgoing and had that special spark about him. He must’ve only been thirteen or so, but he had street smarts and always wanted to learn new tricks, as the older crew we were always happy to show him the way. Fast forward to 2021, and Lannie has been immersed in the skateboarding culture since day one. He’s one of the few that’s lucky enough to call his passion his job. It all started when his buddy Anthony Shultz needed someone to film his “sponsor me” tape to send out to potential sponsors. Lannie instantly became the videographer for Anthony using a borrowed camera, and his passion was born. It didn’t take long for his work
to get noticed, and he eventually was hired to make a shop video for Asylum Skate Shop. His dad, John Rhoades, bought him his first camera, and Lannie took Frank Zimmerman’s video class at OHS. Lannie said that Frank and that class was the only thing that kept him in school, where he eventually graduated. The Asylum video never dropped because all of the talented riders got bigger sponsors and used his footage for their new sponsors. Soon afterwards, he landed his first real job working for Sun Diego, then on to Adio Footwear in 2005. His biggest break was his first full-length edit for Zero Skateboards’ Cold War. Now a made man in the skate video world, he worked for Volcom, and eventually NHS, which houses the longest running skateboard brands in the game. 20
The Rhoades boys have become the anchors of skateboarding here in the O. His brother Troy rips the board, JT is an amazing photographer, and Forrest is one of the funniest people you will ever meet. The legendary Lorretta mansion on the Eastside where they grew up has housed every top pro in the last ten years, and has been the catalyst of brands like Psockadelic, Bum Bag, and Steel Mill Coffee located downtown. Lannie’s latest achievement is winning an X Games gold medal for his real street video part featuring Thrasher Magazine’s 2019 Skater Of The Year, Milton Martinez. Lannie loves Oside. “Be proud of where you’re from. Help it thrive beyond what we grew up in, and don’t trash where you splash,” he proudly stated. We couldn’t agree more, brother.

XYE SANDERS 2022 SAN DIEGO COUNTY TEACHER OF THE YEAR WORDS: ALONDRA FIGUEROA PHOTOS: ZACH CORDNER
“It’s always been people over paperwork for me” said Ms. Xylena “Xye” Sanders, San Diego County Teacher of the Year for the 2021 and 2022 school years. In our turbulent world that seems focused on nothing but paperwork, that statement really resonated with us at The Osider, as an overall life philosophy. For us, it’s about focusing on what matters: People and highlighting the great stuff they do. The same people who get up every single day and give it their absolute all—people like Xye Sanders, teacher at Cesar Chavez Middle School right here in Oceanside. Xye (pronounced Zi) and her family have lived in Oceanside since 1989. She attended
several schools in Oceanside, including elementary schools Libby and Ivey Ranch, both Jefferson and Lincoln middle schools, and then graduated from El Camino, where she won both an academic and athletic scholarship for volleyball. Xye credits being an Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) student at El Camino with really giving her the opportunity to tutor other students that led to her love of teaching. It was by helping others that her desire to work with special needs students arose—that’s what pushed her to venture out and learn more. Xye then went on to receive her special education and teaching credential from Northern Arizona University. 26
Seeing her students succeed every day is what motivates her, she shared. That’s why it made perfect sense to start her educational career as a student teacher in Oceanside Unified School District at El Camino in 2002. She wanted to give back to the same place that helped foster her talents, led her to teaching, and helped catapult her to success in the educational field. Like a true Osider, she’s well known as a hard worker and team player—something she attributes to her background in volleyball. “Xye lives her truth. She’s fantastic with the kids, so easy to work with and incredibly helpful and loyal to her students and faculty,” said Assistant Principal,
“ As a young female teacher of color, she inspires her students daily to consider science and technology as a pathway that they too can follow”
Saul Watson. It’s clear that Sanders pushes her students to progress every day by motivating them with her infectious energy and easy-going attitude. Watson also shared that she’s beloved by students and faculty alike at Chavez, where she teaches Special Education Math and Science. Xye is also heavily involved on campus where she coaches the Co-ed volleyball team whose season had just ended the day before our interview.
Sanders is also part of the Educational Tech team that helps faculty members with various software issues that may arise using all these new online platforms. She’s advisor of the Girls Who Code Club, Oceanside chapter—a group that focuses on creating a path into the computer/technology world for girls. Xye also supports her faculty by being an Oceanside Teachers Association (OTA) representative for her site and a Relationships By Objective (RBO) member 27
for the past six years—a process by which all members, administrative, classified, and certificated work together to try to solve site specific issues to help better the campus environment. As a young female teacher of color, she inspires her students daily to consider science and technology as a pathway that they too can follow. As an athlete, she helps create team-building opportunities daily for her kids to model both in and out of the classroom. As a leader on campus, she uses her skills in various ways to support her fellow faculty members. Overall, Xye Sanders is a powerhouse and we are proud to call her an Osider! The Osider crew looks forward to seeing what’s in store for this amazing lady, and we know our community is lucky to call her one of our own. The History of The 101 Club (aka The Main Attraction) WORDS: KRISTI HAWTHORNE PHOTOS COURTESY OF OCEANSIDE HISTORICAL SOCIETY
Oceanside’s infamous adult club is no more. Demolition crews have torn down the Main Attraction and its surrounding buildings, and are busy loading the rubble into waiting trucks. While a strip club and its clientele may be a loss to some (an eyesore to most, and a curiosity to others), the building dates back to the early 1940s, and has an association with some of the biggest acts in Country and Western music.

by military personnel at Camp Pendleton. The Alcohol Beverage Control department revoked the alcohol license due to the conviction, and owner R. G. Hunter foreclosed for failure to pay rent.

1965
1.
Prior to the notable club and infamous strip club, the property housed Red and Bill’s Café—a small restaurant owned by William L. D. Hamilton and George A. Strahan. “Bill” Hamilton and his wife Minnie lived in Los Angeles during the early years of the Depression, where Bill worked on the California Aqueduct as a cook. In 1935, Minnie Hamilton moved to Carlsbad to help take care of her ailing grandfather. Bill soon followed and began working as a cook at the Bridge Café that was located near the San Luis Rey River Bridge on Highway 101 north of Oceanside. While Bill Hamilton was working at the Bridge Café, he met George “Red” Strahan. The two decided to go into business together, and soon opened a café of their own.
2.
In July of 1948, the partners sold their café property to John and Mary Vieszt, who just
three years later, sold the property to R. G. Hunter—a resident of Vista. It was likely at this time the building at 939 North Hill/Coast Highway was erected. On May 1, 1952 with George Duros as the new proprietor, “The Wheel” held its grand opening featuring The Valentines—an “all girl orchestra” as entertainment. The Wheel, soon to be renamed the “Wheel Club,” served food and cocktails with live entertainment and dancing. It soon became a popular nightspot on Highway 101.
3.
The nightclub was not without scandal. In 1956, its then manager Jerome Apelby was arrested for showing obscene material. Described in local newspapers as a coin-operated “peep hole moving picture machine featuring five pornographic movies,” it was confiscated by police on November 2nd. At a hearing, the films were shown on a screen in a courtroom and deemed “not decent by any stretch of the imagination.” Apelby was found guilty, fined, and given a suspended jail sentence. In response, the club was declared “out of bounds” 32
In 1957, Jimmie (sometimes spelled Jimmy) Brogdon began operating the Club. Brogdon had been living in Escondido in 1954, and it was there he played piano for the band “Hidden Valley Boys” at the Squeaky’s El Patio. The band played at the Wheel Club in September of 1954, and by 1957, Brogdon was managing the Wheel Club, along with Milton Forester. Brogdon was successful in bringing notable acts to Oceanside, including Freddie Hart, who appeared on a weekly television program, along with Merle Haggard, Little Jimmy Dickens, Johnny Cash, and the Maddox Brothers, and Rose. Known as “America’s Most Colorful Hillbilly Band,” the group consisted of four brothers: Fred, Cal, Cliff, and Don, along with their sister Rose. After leaving Alabama during the Depression, the Maddox family settled in Central California. Tired of endless hours of picking cotton to make ends meet, the Maddox siblings tried their hand at singing, and by 1937 made their live radio debut when Rose was just eleven years old. In the 1950s and 1960s, Rose Maddox had over a dozen hits as a solo artist and four solid hits with the legendary Buck Owens. She’s considered one of the “grand dames” of traditional country music.
5.
On December 7, 1959, Brogdon married country western star Roselea Maddox Hale in Las Vegas, Nevada. Lyle Duplessie wrote in 2015 biography of Rose Maddox: “Rose had met Jimmy Brogdon, owner of the Wheel Club in Oceanside. Brogdon was well connected in the music industry, and his club regularly hosted such luminaries as George Jones, Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Roger Miller, and the up-and-coming Merle Haggard. Brogdon would now host another star: Rose. It didn’t take long before Brogdon and Rose were in love.” In an interview before her death, Maddox said of her career in the late 1960s: “Times were changing. Nightclubs were using house bands instead of guest stars. We weren’t working as much. I found out I could make as much money as the whole family by myself. I had a son to support. I got married to a man in Oceanside. Jimmy Brogdon. He still lives in Oceanside. When I married him, he was a nightclub owner. Now he owns half of Oceanside.”
Matchbook from the 101 Club.

6.
Another star that performed at the 101 Club was Barbara Mandrell—a local girl who graduated from Oceanside High School in 1967. She performed with her family, The Mandrell Family Band, at various local nightspots, and one of their first records was recorded in Oceanside. Barbara Mandrell would go on to be a huge star with several hits and a variety television show.
7.
In 1971, Corporal Garry Lee Hanson was murdered outside the 101 Club after an altercation inside the bar. The City of Oceanside noted in a study that in a one-year period, a number of felonies had been committed at the Club—along with a dozen misdemeanors, a variety of reported crimes, and an equal number of citations and violations. But the City Council and planners were more concerned with the high concentration of crime in the downtown area, particularly what they termed “the honky tonk area”—establishments that were seen as “major deterrents to the revitalization of the downtown area, attracting prostitutes, drug peddlers, transients, and other negative elements, which produce a climate that seems to encourage crime.” The study presented in 1977, reported that in 1973, 47% of felonies and 51% of misdemeanors were reported in downtown Oceanside within a four to six block radius and arrests for felonies had increased 80 percent. So despite the declining reputation of the 101 Club, because it was outside of this “zone” it was not considered a public nuisance.
Jonathan Wayne Freeman still can't believe the Purple Chuch is gone.
8.
By 1979, the roadside club went from a Country & Western bar and restaurant to a disco called “First Edition.” An ad that ran in the Los Angeles Times that year seeking a part-time disc jockey and a fulltime promoter which went on to say “promotion [is] very important, unless experienced in promoting successful disco do not apply.”
9.
Two years later, the establishment was changed to “Francine’s” and advertised dancing and cocktails to “Top Forty” hits. One year later, Francine’s introduced “Tuesday Night Ladies Only,” that featured adult male entertainers was considered a novelty act at the time. Performers known as the Lone Ranger, Macho Man, and Indian Jim were “regulars.”
10.
Soon after its foray into adult entertainment, the club was renamed “Pure Platinum,” and featured female semi-nude dancers. Another name change occurred in the late 1980s when the club went by “Dirty Dan’s.” And lastly, in 1990, it was renamed “The Main Attraction.” Jimmy Brogdon dissolved his management company in 1987, and died ten years later on November 18, 1997. would eventually call it the "Purple Church" due to its purple awnings at the front of the building. For years, people mocked Oceanside for having such an establishment on Hill Street (aka the historic Highway 101) located across from the Chamber of Commerce—no less. Some are now lamenting its inevitable demise. Regardless of its reputation, its association with country music is worth remembering. Chef Willy of Naegi, Best Flavor Award winner.
A TASTE OF OCEANSIDE’S FINEST WORDS: SHELBY ROWE PHOTOS: ZACH CORDNER
There’s no debate over the top-notch eateries in Oceanside. We’re lucky to be surrounded by such talented artists that make absolute magic in the kitchen, and behind the bar. If you’ve ever wished you could try them all—then you’re not alone! Oside Flavor, an annual event hosted by The Osider and PierClub, gave North County that exact opportunity. On September 15th, Oside Flavor kicked off its third annual event at Goat Hill Park with an impressive lineup of new and old flavors, live music, art, and a silent auction. With a stacked list of vendors, Oside Flavor gave locals an opportunity to sample the finest
restaurants, bakeries, and breweries all in one place. It was a night full of epic food and drinks, but also community. Taking place on the Wednesday after Labor Day, it was the perfect way to kick off the beginning of “local’s summer” together. With the tourists almost fully out of town, the night gave our community—who debatably works harder in the summer months than any other time during the year—a chance to slow down, celebrate each other’s accomplishments, and taste the best of what Oceanside has to offer. As you already know, all of us in Oceanside like to have a good time. So, needless to say, the 34
vibes were running high all night. From the late afternoon and well into the evening, the mingling, eating and drinking were in full swing. Drinks were flowing between Local Roots, Seaborn Cocktails, Northern Pine Brewery, and Spicy Mike’s Michi Mix and Dip—just to name a few. And the food? Undeniably, the main attraction. Of course, the restaurants around town that you know and love served up nothing but the best for the main event. Beach Break Cafe gave us a taste of their oh-so-beloved and delicious coffee cake. LTH
served their smackin’ tuna ceviche and mango margaritas. Privateer came through with some seriously scrumptious pork nachos. Emerald Isle served their famous BTL tacos and Craft Coast threw down their mouth-watering tacos al pastor and tacos de birria. A lo ngside these veterans, so me new restaurants entered the scene: Shootz Fish x Beer served up the finest furikake rice with smokey yellowfin aguachile—earning some fish-loving fans before their grand opening scheduled for the beginning of November. Naegi was a crowd favorite with Chef Willy
taking home the Best Flavor Award and $500 for his crackin’ fried chicken sandwich. If you were there and got to taste it, then consider yourself lucky. The pop up is now closed, leaving us waiting and wanting for more. But, the word’s out that the team has something else in the works. It’s safe to say we’re all ready for their next move. Like any party, the vibes turned up a notch after sunset. With string lights above and those dancing shoes below, Obed Padilla carried us into the night with his sweet and funky sounds. Killing it is an understatement—Obed put on an impressive show, closing out a night for the books. 35
While not explicitly written, Oside Flavor is an event by locals, for locals. Everything we have in our community is a direct reflection of the people who are bold enough to go after their dreams— whether it’s a restaurant, a local distillery, or an up-and-coming artist. Coming together to celebrate each other is what Oside Flavor is all about. A huge THANK YOU goes out to all the vendors that participated and everyone who attended. We’ll see you again next year!

101 JEWELERS WORDS: ALICIA STONE PHOTOS: ZACH CORDNER
If you’ve taken notice of the steady increase of new businesses and storefront face-lifts in the center of our stretch of Coast Highway, you’ll be interested to know they’ve recently come together to create the Oceanside Design District. This new collective will highlight those businesses and set that area apart from the “South O” community and downtown “Mainstreet Oceanside.” 101 Jewelers is owned and operated by second-generation jeweler Ozzy Aguilar, his wife of seven years, Ivet, and their two shop dogs, Archie and Canelo. After Ozzy’s father immigrated to the US from Mexico in the 70s, his family relocated to Oceanside from Bakersfield when he was just six years old. Soon after that, Ozzy became interested in his father’s work and remembers playing with his tools and welding torch every day after school. It was in high school when he started taking his father’s trade more seriously, and dedicated all of his free time to learning jewelry design and repair. After working with his father for five years, he landed an apprenticeship with a watchmaker and worked at various places until getting the opportunity to open his own store on Wisconsin Avenue in 2018 under the name “Jeweler Times.” In 2019, they
decided to rebrand and changed the name to something more cohesive with our community. 101 Jewelers showcases many of Ozzy’s original creations, as well as vintage pieces picked up from estate sales. They also sell retail items such as watchbands, parts, and batteries, and offer jewelry cleaning. They specialize in Mexican stones, such as fire opals and golden turquoise and Ozzy proudly uses his knowledge as a silversmith to restore antique family heirlooms. They also sell every color of the vintage inspired Kit-Cat Clocks—those same nostalgic timepieces with the wagging tale and shifting eyes that many of us grew up with. Although they don’t purport themselves to be “jewelry buyers,” they don’t mind when someone brings in their bits and pieces and will sometimes commit to a good old-fashioned barter situation. “When we first opened up on Wisconsin Avenue, there was a certain loneliness on the block. But now there’s a vibe and so much activity happening up and down the block!” said Ozzy. “Amidst all the growth and progression happening here in Oceanside, we’re really excited to take our shop to the next level and see where we’ll fit in in the coming years.” 54

HANK’S HOMESTEAD WORDS: ELIZABETH SCHWARTZE PHOTOS: ZACH CORDNER
Created by Oside native, Hank Driskill, Hank’s Homestead offers full-service chicken coop cleaning, and homestead care. At just sixteen years old, Hank’s current success is the result of hard work, kindness, knowledge, and an entrepreneurial spirit. “My family has always had chickens at our house, so I know how much work they require. My mom saw a post on Craig’s List when I was in sixth grade, that someone needed help taking care of their chickens. I got more jobs—I even bought an electric bike to get around,” said Hank, explaining how he got started. What started as a hobby job at thirteen years old to make some extra spending money, became a full-fledged business during the pandemic. With the COVID-19 quarantine, many families decided to devote their time at home to raising chickens. The newbie homesteaders had lots of questions to get started, and Hank was there to help! And what about when the chicken owners went back to work and school and couldn’t keep up with the daily maintenance? Hank was there to help then, too. Homesteading never ends, because the animals will always need care, and the upkeep can be daunting for new or veteran homesteaders. Therefore, the concept behind his business is simple—yet brilliant. Holly Della Vedova, owner of Evolve Skin Spa, was one of Hank’s first homestead clients in Oceanside. “Chickens are a lot of work, it’s a breath of fresh air to see such youthful enthusiasm, met with good old-fashioned work ethic in this day and age,” shared Holly. Sure, Hank started with chickens, but he really can take care of an entire homestead: “I
Owner Hank Driskill and friend
do everything on a homestead!” If families that normally manage their homestead want to go on vacation, it can be stressful to figure out who will handle the daily needs of cleaning, feeding, and watering. No problem. Call Hank! “My specialty is deep cleaning, but I take care of other animals, too, including pigs, and goats,” he explained. Hank says chickens are very curious. “It makes me happy to have happy hens come running when they see me. They follow me around for treats and love, while I clean, sanitize, and freshen their coop for them.” One interesting fact: Hank brings all the cleaning supplies, but each homesteader must provide their own shovel and rake for their flock to avoid cross-contamination of another flock’s “bird germs.” 56
As a Junior at Vista Trade Tech, Hank has found his calling. “I’d love to do this long-term and have my own company with employees one day.” His endeavors even caught the attention of nationally syndicated Backyard Poultry magazine with an article in their June 2021 issue. Even though he’s the owner of a thriving business with his own Toyota Tacoma work truck to show for his hard work, Hank is still in high school, and enjoys his free time. His favorite thing to do in Oceanside is to hang out at the harbor fire pits with friends. Hank's Homestead is on Facebook and Instagram @hanks_homestead, or you can just call/text him at (760) 994-2225.

Chef William Eick
MATSU WORDS: JAMEY STONE PHOTOS: ZACH CORDNER
Chef William Eick has had a love affair with Japanese food and culture for as long as I can remember. In fact, his pop-up food truck project Naegi recently won the Best Flavor Award at Oside Flavor for his to-die-for chicken sandwiches. Of course, he uses his own milk bread from his other project Hokkaido Bread Co. But Chef Willy is just getting started—his newest project Matsu is a truly next level dining experience. He and his partners Spencer O’Keefe, Mark Gendron, and Justin Veague have one goal in mind, and that’s to bring a Michelin star home to Oceanside with an elevated dining experience that plays on classic Japanese flavor using local terroir. Right when you walk in the door, you can feel the spirit of Japan. The minimalist décor is all hand done. The front door and tables are all
custom made with black walnut wood, and are accented by banzai trees and cherry blossoms strategically placed throughout. The tables are bare until the server brings you a hot towel, the menu, and water to start the service. The menu at Matsu offers a four-course and eight-course Omakase, all though you can order à la carte—we recommend enjoying the courses. Each course comes out along with the proper utensils needed, and then are cleared for the next. The plates and knives are all custom made by local makers and enhance the servings magically. We tried the four-course option that started with an amazing oyster dish, then a pot sticker made with cabbage as the outer pasta. I’m not sure how Chef Willy did it, but this is a must-try and the texture will blow your mind. Next, we 62
jumped right into the Unagi tempura with a kumquat puree. This one hit every one of the umami flavor profiles. We finished with the best duck dish that I’ve ever tasted. Everything was so top notch that we had to end the meal at the full bar with a sake to cleanse our pallets. Matsu is reservation-only and a longer dining experience, so plan to spend some time when you book your dinner. With food and service like this, I think that Oside will receive that star very soon. FLYING PIG PUB & KITCHEN WORDS: AARON SCHMIDT PHOTOS: ZACH CORDNER
After first opening its doors in South O back in 2011, the Flying Pig has found a new home in the downtown area on Mission Avenue. Their style of gastropub restaurant is one of the first to become established here—ushering in a new age of “blue collar gourmet” dining in Oceanside, as a crop of new restaurants would soon follow suit and open up for business. As a matter of fact, we even did an article on them in our very first issue of The Osider back in 2014. Owners (and husband-and-wife team) Roddy and Aaron Browning took a chance on Oceanside ten years ago, and it’s paid off for them (and for the city of Oceanside) tenfold. Thanks to them and a few others, we now enjoy a very vibrant, diverse, and bustling dining scene with many fine restaurants to choose from. “Back then, it was all timing—Oceanside was craving it. Any time we had a day off, we went to Encinitas. Everybody went somewhere else to eat. Not to take away from 333 or Harney Sushi, but you could only hit up those two places so many times back then,” explained Aaron. “We wanted to open a restaurant that you could roll up to off the beach in your flip-flops and order a good burger, but also a place where you could go on a dinner date on Saturday night and get a pork chop and a good bottle of wine. That little place provided a lot—not only for bringing people
to Oceanside, but also for us as a family.” The Flying Pig’s interior space on Mission is a lot different than their previous location on Tremont with its vaulted ceiling and skylights, which is an added plus and a great addition. “The ceiling was a dropped ceiling, so when we came in and saw the wood we decided to blow out the ceiling. The skylights were already there—they were just covered up by the dropped ceiling. And the original brick on the side wall was already there—it was just covered in plaster,” said Aaron. The Flying Pig’s new location has them now directly located in the heart of the city. “It just made sense to be downtown,” said Roddy. With that same rustic charm you’ve come to enjoy at the Flying Pig, you can also expect their menu to be on point, as they’ve brought in a new chef to handle the back of the house. Chef Harrison Hackett has been whipping up all kinds of goodness—putting his special stamp on the Flying Pig’s trademark dishes like the Smoked Chicken, Pork Chops, Butternut Squash, and their to-die-for burgers. It should also be noted that they’re now serving lunch starting at 11am, so now you don’t have to wait til the afternoon to get your burger fix. Joyous! W h e n yo u wa nt to ex perie nc e o n e of Oceanside’s best eateries, drop on by the new Flying Pig—just make sure you tell them that The Osider sent you! 64

Q&A
Ryan Sargent, Esq. Owner of Sargent Law Firm Injury Lawyers
Law, Gratitude, & South Jetty Q: Tell us about the beginning, and how you started the Sargent Law Firm. A: I started my Firm out of the guest bedroom of our Oceanside condo. I was recently married, had a brand new baby, always dreamed of having my own business, and failure was not an option. I had seen the damage and diculties that an accident can cause in someone’s life (physically, emotionally, and nancially), and so I knew this was an area of law that I could make a positive dierence in our clients’ lives.
Q: Looking forward, what are your plans for the business? A: My plan is to always provide our clients with exceptional legal services, continue improving our
Q: It has been over a decade since you started the Sargent Law Firm, how does that feel as a business owner? A: Only a third of small businesses make it a decade, so this is a milestone I am both proud and humbled to celebrate. I am grateful to God, this community, my family and friends, and to our great team of employees for the success of the Law Firm. Q: Looking back, what would you have done di erently? A: Hindsight is always 20/20. Building a business is never an easy road, and although I often had to learn hard lessons, it also taught me so much about myself and business. I now enjoy mentoring other new business owners, hoping they can learn from
client experience, and to continue to grow the Law Firm to meet the needs of our community. Q: When should someone reach out to your Firm? A: Our Firm works with people who have been injured in accidents, and need help navigating the confusing legal process after an accident. The type of clients we help have been injured in car & motorcycle accidents, dog bites, premises liability, wrongful deaths, and more. If you are ever unsure if you need a lawyer, you can always call our oce and we will do a free case review for you. Q: Finally, what is your favorite surf spot in Oceanside? A: South Jetty and Inners (if you know, you know).
