SCENES

LETTER OFTHE EDITOR ‘Transpose’, a word that could be used in a myriad of different contexts but with the same general meaning of changing and transforming. This word aptly defines the fashion industry, a place where the only thing remaining constant is change. Change is an inevitable characteristic within human life and is often reflected in our desire to improve, adapt and explore and I believe as members of the world of fashion we rigorously look for change, be it conceptual or physical.

As we gradually transcend into the colder months of the year, we tend to adapt our sense of fashion to what would be more suitable to the physical temperature; however, through this issue we hope to inform readers about the most effective and feasible ways to retain one’s appeal and charm in the most elegant way while still ensuring that the weather doesn’t go against our health. Through our ‘Gothic Yet Classic Dream’ photoshoot we delve into the most stylish ways to combine vintage and modern accessories to enhance the lure of our outfits. We further explore the various ways to maintain fitness and health and simultaneously engage in beauty tips from across the world. This issue also has a special focus on understanding the power of the divine female and the strength that women encompass in all aspects of life. We probe into the real issues that women face today and how 21st century feminism intends on changing that. We break the stigma behind feminism and learn to relish the beauty a woman holds. As the Editor in Chief of this magazine, I would like to extend my deep gratitude to Naila Hawach, the design and editorial director of the magazine and Chama Jemmali, the modeling and photography director of the magazine for their extensive contribution towards this work of art. I am also grateful for the continuing support of the readers of this magazine and I hope to, along with my team, provide you with new, innovative and interesting ideas in each issue. THE F-WORD:

FEMINISM By Ruth Gonzalez

[fem-uh-niz-uh-m]; noun; 1) the doctrine of advocating, social, political and all other rights for women equal to those of men. 2) an organized movement from the attainment of such rights for women. 3) older use: feminine character.

1

Still nowadays, a lot of people see feminism as a woman’s act of rebellion trying to say she is important and should be taken more into account. But why is this seen as an act of rebellion? What is bad about saying women are also important in this world? Feminism is not asking for a better treatment of this gender, but for an equal treatment. And people might think: don’t we already have an equal treatment? We do all vote and we do all go to school! However, this is not true for all countries! Women are not allowed to vote in Saudi Arabia, Brunei or United Arab Emirates. There are also over 25 countries were women are not allowed to go to college, such as Cambodia, Haiti, Palestine, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Ghana, Mali, etc. Knowing all this, where is the equality? Why do men have to have more rights than women? Why do men earn more money for the same job than women do? Why are there, the majority of the time, more men on boards of directors or also parliaments than women? The answer is easy: tradition. Years ago, women were the ones that stayed home, took care of the house and family and the men were the ones who had to earn the money. Men haven’t barely changed their position but women have improved and evolved to realize that doing both things, working and taking care of the family makes them stronger and more independent. Women are strong and able to do the same things any man does, and sometimes even better.

That some families were raised some way and taught their daughters how to sew and cook and sent their sons to university, does not mean that a woman cannot work and earn the same amount of money than any man doing that same job. As it does not mean that a man cannot take care of the family and be the one staying at home! Nowadays all men and women should be the ones taking care of the home and working at the same time, as we all are strong enough to do that, which is what feminism is about:

2

all doing the same stuff with the same rights and obligations and earning the same money for it. So, all men and women please stand up and show the entire world that all women are capable to do anything they want and that there is no difference in a working ambiance between a man boss or a woman boss! She is not incomplete to be made whole by a man and she is not a disgrace to be covered by a man. She is who births one half of society and raises the other.

BURNING MAN

By Blu Aragones

BURNING MAN COULD BE DEFINED IN MANY POSSIBLE WAYS. THERE CAN BE AS MANY DESCRIPTIONS AS PARTICIPANTS OF THIS UNIQUE GATHERING CELEBRATED ANNUALLY SINCE 1986 WHEN LARRY HARVEY AND A GROUP OF FRIENDS LIT THE VERY FIRST BURNING MAN ON BAKER BEACH, SAN FRANCISCO.

S

ince 2014 there have been more than 70.000 participants at Burning Man. Here you can find all sorts of people with thousands of different backgrounds all the way from yogis, artists and freaks to celebrities, businessmen and party-people! All ready to take on this wild rollercoaster ride of endorphins!

4

Nowadays, it is held in Black Rock Desert, Nevada. An ecosystem with arid climate that puts your body under severe conditions of dryness, windiness and dustiness. The surface on which the camps are set up is called the playa covered in thin, white/ yellow clay dust. All ‘burners’ must learn to take care of themselves and provide for another in the case that help is needed. It is easy to lose sight of a friend when astray in the sandstorms. Once you have no idea where you are, you can truly learn to find yourself. The Burning Man event and it´s communities are guided by ten principles that are meant to evoke the ontological perspective that has emerged through experience. They are the following: 1) Radical Inclusion 2) Gifting 3) De-commodification 4) Radical Self-Reliance 5) Radical Self-Expression 6) Communal Effort 7) Civic Responsibility 8) Leaving No Trash Behind 9) Participation 10) Immediacy Immediacy, the basic principal which in many ways is the touchstone of Burning Man is defined by the organizers as: “The search to overcome barriers that stand between us and a recognition of our inner selves, the reality of those around us, participation in society and contact with a natural world exceeding human powers. No idea can substitute this experience”

Photo By: Raz Degan Models: Vera Colombo & Blu Aragones

I celebrated Burning Man with my father and the magic Caravan Of Light Tribe where we shared space & time with many other communities! It was an overwhelming experience and my mind got blown in all senses. At Burning Man everyone responds with kindness and we learn to flourish in an environment filled abundantly with love. In a world where violence, greed and war are quite abundant, we have the Burning Man participants who are simply happy to be alive, dancing, exchanging ideas, teaching each-other and sharing unconditional LOVE! I personally find that this is a behaviour and attitude that the world is lacking and needs more of. If we are going to keep growing in numbers as a species, we must learn to share this globe together. Coming here can teach you many life-lessons and I strongly recommend everyone reading this to go at least once! And don´t think twice about it, you can always find an excuse….!!!! We are the youth of our time and the parents of the future, let´s learn as much as we can and acquire all the consciousness needed to hand our descendants a better world!

“We need to bring down heaven on earth and earth up to heaven.” LOVE TO LIVE LIFE! 5

Patricia Mazano What do you think the color of the season will be? The dusty cedar because it gives a warm and calm feeling, it also combines perfectly with this season’s neutral colors.

Cristina Bote What’s your favorite piece of clothing for the winter? Scarfs, especially if they match with my outfit

Alvaro Comas Who’s your fashion icon? My friends

Alix Thiroloix

6

Who’s your favorite fashion designer? Ines de la Fressange: I love her style, she’s an icon of the “Parisian chic”

Thomas de Kerautem What makes you happy about Barcelona? The sun, the beach, surfing and just being able to hang out anywhere, anytime.

Franco Mezzano What’s your favorite area in Barcelona and why?

Hugo Remy What’s your favorite work uniform? I’d say my favorite work uniform is the suit. It might seem very classic and a bit boring but I think that the huge diversity of suits really helps people expressing who they are. It reflects their personality which is why I prefer suits to fix uniforms.

My favorite neighbourhood would have to be “El Born”. This district is appealing to me for being one of those places were “getting lost” and traveling without a concrete point in mind is a must. I love wandering and discovering new cool bars, restaurants and interesting sites the neighborhood has to offer. I particularly recommend having some tapas at “Bormuth” followed by a bar hop around Passeig 7 del Born.

Sara Vinyeta What’s the accessory that you can’t live without? Watches, because I think it’s pretty stylish to wear a watch, even more than other jewelry, it’s classy and useful.

5 benefits of being a morning person and why you should consider becoming one. By Julia Duraffourd and Coralie Boissel

“THE TIME JUST BEFORE DAWN CONTAINS THE MOST ENERGY OF ALL HOURS OF THE DAY. THIS HAS HELPED ME BECOME AN EARLY RISER AND AN EARLY DOER…. WHEN I WAKE TO SEE THAT THE LIGHT IS OUT ALREADY, I FEEL THE WORLD HAS STARTED WITHOUT ME.” TERRI GUILLEMETS

M

any people undermine the satisfaction and the pleasure that waking up early provides. You might think that sleeping until late will help get you through the day but you’re missing out on so many things and that’s what we’re going to try to demonstrate.

8

Time to accomplish more things. Waking up early will enable you to take some time off of you daily routine and to do things that most people consider trivial but that are in fact important. What are those things? Writing about how you feel and about anything that comes to your mind makes you focus on the orientation of your life, about the people that surround you and, most importantly, about how they contribute to who you are. Meditation, even though it’s hard and requires some training, will help you concentrate on your inner self and your body.

Start your day right You know the saying: “Breakfast is the most important meal of the day.” By sleeping all night, our metabolism and blood sugar are at their lowest so we need a healthy breakfast to re-energize us,” A cup of coffee and a stick of gum isn’t going to cut it. According to numerous studies, people who eat breakfast perform better in their job, with better concentration and problem-solving skills.

They are happier Studies reveal that early exposure to morning light, which you miss out by being a “night owl”, may boost energy and reduce depression risk. According to a survey, people who naturally get up around 7 am or earlier, have higher results in terms of happiness, cheerfulness and alertness.

They exercise more consistently People who exercise in the morning seem to maintain more consistent workout routines than those who break a sweat at other times of the day. As a matter of fact, they are less likely to face an unexpected work deadline or activity. By squeezing a little workout, yoga session or run you will feel more energized during the day and you won’t have to worry about it anymore.

They do better in school According to many studies conducted in schools and universities, it was proven that evening people had lower grades than morning people. The study was focused on their cognitive abilities, conscientiousness, and their determination regarding success. The reason for this probably lies in the fact that morning people are generally more productive. The fact that they are motivated and organized makes them more likely to get things done well and on time and thus enables them to achieve more tasks than others.

9

We are sure that you have now understood that whether you are a morning person or not, your body was designed to make you one. Your body will slowly adapt to this new schedule and becoming an early riser will soon become a habit without you realizing it. By experiencing different things, you will find what type of activities suits you the most and you’ll have accomplished a lot in a small amount of time.

n the heart of northern California, amidst the cool, foggy summers is San Francisco, home to a diverse population of Silicon Valley techies, hippies, fashion gurus, artists and many, many more. Of course, San Francisco, otherwise known as “The City by locals, is notorious for the infamous Golden Gate Bridge and the cable cars that roll down its steep and windy streets. However, what truly mesmerises me about this city is how culturally diverse and beautiful it is in all aspects, be it in the architecture, the people or the food! Each neighbourhood is like walking into a different world of new sounds, tastes, sights and scents.

Blending cultures in San Francisco 20

Like many major cities in the United States, San Francisco has its very own Chinatown, a popular attraction amongst tourists and locals due to the delicious dim sum restaurants and quirky Chinese souvenir shops it hosts. The dragon lampposts and Chinese inspired buildings on one hand and the traditional string music playing in the background on the other hand, is almost like walking down a boisterous street in China! Walk a few streets down and you’ll come across North Beach or “Little Italy”, filled with the finest Italian restaurants and cute pastelcoloured buildings. Right off the bat, North Beach has a very European vibe to it; laid back people enjoying their afternoon Espresso by the sidewalk, friendly faces with familiar accents and in short, a slow paced and easy-going life. Plus, the Fisherman’s Wharf is right next to it, another district by the bay with the best seafood restaurants in town, many with a view of the water!

Backtrack to the inner parts of San Francisco and you’ll find the Castro, also known as the gay district, home to eclectic, fun and some of the kindest folks I have ever met. Here, I found the most welcoming and warm people (although all San Franciscan’s are like that!), people who bear no judgement and who just see you as a person, not your race, ethnicity, nationality, gender or sexual preference. Top that off with the vibrant and rich colours on the walls, buildings and even crossroads, and you will fall deeper in love with the city. Haight-Ashbury is yet another eccentric neighbourhood with a very alternative scene. Wander the many thrift stores, record stores, coffee shops and bookstores in the area and get lost in the streets packed with picturesque Edwardian and Victorian homes.

Last but not least is my personal favourite, the Mission district. With a Mexican majority residing here, this quarter inevitably has the best and most authentic ‘taquerias’ and other mouthwatering Mexican restaurants in town. However, the hidden gems of the Mission are the different alleys, filled with beautifully vibrant murals and street art, some of which have deep meanings and depict the constant struggle immigrants and minorities face in the country. Moreover, The Women’s Building, a beautiful establishment both on the inside and outside due to its spectacular mural that promotes female empowerment is also located in the Mission district and advocates “self-determination, gender equality and social justice”. An inspiration to some and an awakening to others, there is no doubt that an afternoon in the Mission is a beautifully eye opening experience.

ortofino, one of the eight wonders of the world, lies in the Italian Riviera. This little fishing village became famous in the 60s, when actors, pop stars and aristocrats visited frequently to attend the exclusive parties and marvel at the breathtaking views. To this day many of the most fashionable stylists have villas in the area including Louis Vuitton, Dior, Gucci, Emilio Pucci and others‌

In the middle of the dark blue waters of the Tyrrhenian sea, guarding the entrance to the gulf of Naples, lies the island of Capri. It's luxuriantly green vegetation and typically Italian villages are protected by steep cliffs. This island is known for its limestone pillars that tower high above the sea, its stunning views and several hidden caves. It is equally famous for it's dazzling parties which have attracted the international jet-set for nearly a century. Mixing tradition and glamour into a delicious cocktail of Italian Culture.

On the northern cost of Sardinia, the second largest island in the Mediterranean, lies the Costa Smeralda. With white sand beaches, golf clubs, helicopter services, and exclusive hotels, the area has drawn the attention of celebrities and billionaires for decades. The area revolves around two main towns: Porto Rotondo, a classic favorite for actors and celebrities, and Porto Cervo, historically a stronghold for the industrial elite.

INSTAGRAM By Álvaro Carias

THE GOLD MINE OF THE LUXURY FIRMS Nowadays, social networks have become a crucial part of many of us. Sometimes we don’t even notice this but as soon as we open our laptops to access the web, we sub-consciously open our favourite social network website just to check the updates we have received. Indeed, we are often exposed to our friends’ preferences online through the photos that they post or the pages that they like. Instagram, which mainly focuses on the posting of pictures, is one of the social networks that influences us the most when choosing our dressing style. In fact, many “millennials” who started to post pictures in Instagram showing their fashion styles to their friends have ended up becoming important celebrities with millions of followers. Through this way, the world’s most influential bloggers have managed to make their fame profitable and many of them have decided to create their own fashion firms. This is the case of the famous blogger Rumi Neely, who started her own luxury clothing and complements business called ¨Are You Am I¨. Kendall Jenner, another blogger very popular on Instagram with millions of followers, became the main representative of the brand. And guess what happened? The firm has become a favourite of the majority of American fashionistas. Hence, the brand sales take off every time Kendall Jenner posts a picture on her Instagram account wearing any article from¨Are You Am I¨. Overall, we can see that luxury and fashion businesses have noticed how people´s clothing preferences and fashion trends are influenced by some Instagram profiles and have understood that they can significantly increase their business activities and their market shares by implementing effective marketing strategies in this social network.

As Muslim communities grow faster and faster in Europe so does the number of Europeanborn Muslims, a collective of young people who, dissatisfied with the current situation, have taken it upon themselves to modernise their traditions and customs whilst trying to not compromise on their cultural and religious identity.

their personal sense of fashion, identity and opinions through videos and blogs. These young women have growing audiences of hundreds and thousands of subscribers, as they help fellow Muslim women feel more fashionable while simultaneously staying connected to their cultural values. Among these women is “twenty-something” year old, half Egyptian, half English, fashionista, blogger and entrepreneur Dina Torkia (Known as “Dina Tokio” on YouTube) who has one of the largest audiences amongst Muslim bloggers in the UK. Miss Torkia has spoken out in her videos about the confidence problems she has faced and her opinions on contemporary issues that her community faces today. Nevertheless, her main focus is on fashion and she has attended major events such as Istanbul Modest Fashion Week collaborated with major companies such as Liberty London and has set up her own fashion brand under her real name, looking to fill the market niche of modest fashion.

Today “modest fashion” is quickly evolving. We are seeing much more creativity when it comes to the type of scarves used and how they are styled. For example, in alternative to standard hijabs, we are seeing combinations of turbans and neck scarves or turtle necks in order to give a more modern effect yet still cover the desired amount of neck and hair. The use of different colours, patterns and materials is being embraced as opposed to just the traditional black viscose material. The same is happening in terms of covering the body, classic black abbaya dresses are beginning to be replaced by oversized jumpers and jackets over leggings or jeans so as to adapt modern clothing to traditional values. Floral and geometric patterns are largely popular alongside plain muted and pastel fabrics.

Never has it been so important to understand and respect our neighbours’ customs and traditions, to not ostracise, and take away what they feel identifies them and what can help them adapt to our society as we attempt to adapt to them. In short, we need to work towards a better future regardless of who we are and what we are, as the citizens of tomorrow.

Lifestyle bloggers on the Internet are allowing modest fashion to flourish by updating the world on

KOREAN BEAUTY TIPS By Ines Sebbar

W

hile the fuss is all about eyebrows in the western world, Asians opt for a more natural and healthy look. Beauty trends got “Asianified” these past years. Japanese beauty products that used to lead in the east have now been dethroned by Korean products. Indeed, shops such as The Body Shop, Biotherm, and Kiehl’s have “Koreanised” their products. The hallyu wave even touched the beauty industry. Koreans focus on maintaining a smooth and glowy face, trying to look as healthy as possible. Thus, their skin care routine is quite consistent. Many efficient ingredients that are unknown in Europe or America are part of their daily skin care routine. This is what makes k-beauty special. Here are some basics: -Face masks: They are sheets soaked in a serum that contains a myriad of benefits. Let it on your face for a few moments, take it off, massage your face a little and you’re done! -Sleeping pads: It is a form of more intensive skincare. You can let the pads rest overnight for a nice complexion. Our Asian friends tend to add a bit of moisturizer in the pads for an extra glowy look. You can find many ingredients in these sheets, from basic ones, such as avocado, to more eccentric ones such as snail secretion. Besides these face masks, Koreans also have some “grandma’ methods” that do the work at a low cost. One of these is rice water cleansing.

Next time you cook rice, don’t throw the water you rinsed your rice in! Instead, use it and splash it all over your face. Rice water has moisturizing and antioxidant properties. It also helps circulation and cools off inflamed skin. Now, let’s focus more on the aspect of their make up. As I said before, Koreans tend to like it more natural: They’d use a bright primer along with BB/CC Cream as foundation to make their skin look dewy. Not to leave the work half done, adding up some highlighter and orange or coral blush is a must! Next, they’d work on their eyebrows to make them look straight for an innocent and youthful appearance. After that, they’d work on their eyes trying to make them look rounder and fuller. For this, applying highlighter under your lower lash line is required. It will make your eye bags look bigger…Yes, it is considered cute in South Korea. Still on the eyes, the trend is doing a puppy eye, a cousin of the cat eye. The purpose is to make your eyes rounder and clean. To finish the look, some bright colored lipstick (pinkish or orange…) is applied in a very specific way: You have to put some of the lip tint in the center of your lips and blend outwards. Make up is pretty cheap and its quality is awesome in Kimchi’s homeland! Here are some famous Korean cosmetic brands in case you want to shop: Clio, Mamonde, Etude House, Innisfree, Missha, Peripera, skinfood, 3CE, Laneige, The Face Shop…

As autumn glides past us and we delve into the intimacy and affinity that winter provides us, we enhance our inner self that begins to reflect in our chosen daily wear.

FRANK OCEAN By Vuk Vegezzi

Who is Frank ocean? Frank Ocean is the first male artist in the Hip-Hop industry who publicly declared his homosexuality. Back in 2012, after the release of his first album: Channel Orange – which was a blast – Frank, in an open letter, revealed his past feelings for a young man at the age of 19. Surprisingly, the Hip-Hop industry community responded positively to his announcement.

54

Why is Frank ocean an icon in the artistic industry? Frank Ocean is unique thanks to his voice being one of a kind and his lyrics being heart touching. But what really makes Frank Ocean stand out is his personality. Being the first bisexual male rapper in such a close-minded world is an important factor, as well as the fact that his two albums were huge successes. Frank made his audience wait for exactly four years before releasing his second album Blond. After the huge success and positive critics of Channel Orange (his first album) nobody believed Frank would wait another four years to release his new album. Frank’ songs are about the little common things in life that make you reflect, open up and challenge you to answer questions about yourself and your life. Not only does Frank have a vibrant voice, but he also has lyrics full of reflection and wisdom. The biggest lesson this artist can teach us, is to be ourselves. There is no one better than yourself to live your own life. Listening to Frank Ocean is almost inspiring, and everyone should try to listen to him solo. Life is a journey full of discoveries, experiences and there is no single better time than university to start believing in yourself and live. Finally, a few words of wisdom from Frank for all the college students that are trying to discover themselves and are being hesitant on how to approach their daily situations:

“Many college students have gone to college and gotten hooked on drugs, marijuana, and alcohol. Listen, stop trying to be somebody else. Don't try to be someone else. Be yourself and know that that's good enough. Don't try to be someone else. Don't try to be like someone else, don't try to act like someone else, be yourself. Be secure with yourself. Rely and trust upon your own decisions. On your own beliefs. Be yourself, Frank Ocean, Blond album

The power of meditation By Valerie Belova

W

hen we think of meditation what usually comes to mind is stillness and calmness. Busy as students are, it’s barely possible to find time to reload our minds. But, being busy is just an excuse. We are afraid to stop our minds because the modern world teaches us that such breaks lead to nothing but void; it’s unproductive. Let’s admit it: we follow a very popular trend - we work, study and live like computers - we operate. 3 years ago, when I first sat still in a lotus position, following the instructions: “Don’t do it on purpose. Relax and enjoy the moment”, - I ended up thinking of everything but of the moment. A thought came to me later: we think we control our thoughts, but actually they are the ones controlling us. My first attempts in meditation revealed my active mind which was throwing thoughts like a drunk juggler. It’s not that easy to clean up that chaos.

58

‘YOU GOT USED TO FINDING THE EQUILIBRIUM VALUES OF DEMAND AND SUPPLY, BUT YOU NEVER THINK OF FINDING YOUR OWN EQUILIBRIUM IN TERMS OF REALITY AND YOUR PERCEPTION OF IT.’

We think of meditation as a state we take on purpose. But in our daily lives, we often encounter a meditative state unconsciously. That state could appear when you were contemplating the beauty of nature, or looking in the eyes of your beloved - those times when you were happy and you live in the moment and when your mind has settled down and released all the anxiety. Very few people are able to access that experience at any point of time, but to make that miracle of mind happen, you need to start with consistent practice. Advantages of consistent and regular meditations have already been proven by numerous studies. Not only does it destroy anxiety and depression, alleviate blood pressure but also stimulates creative thinking, increases productivity and, finally, it helps you find that elusive precious internal balance. If you’re still not motivated enough, think: you got used to finding the equilibrium values of demand and supply, but you never think of finding your own equilibrium in terms of reality and your perception of it.

59

And this equilibrium is the most important in our lives! You cannot control everything happening in life, but you can control your attitude towards different situations. You are the creator of your own happiness and harmony, not some “lucky day” or “a good year”. Meditation helps to set that attitude. Moreover, thanks to meditation practices, you soon begin to understand your thoughts better, and what’s more you notice your reaction to those thoughts. This is a key to change your life. There are several techniques that can help you set your meditation correctly. But be prepared that your mind won’t say goodbye to all the I-have-tofinish-a-project-thoughts. Just remember that every time you come up with some distracting image or thought, gently turn your attention back to your breath. Don’t be under the assumption that you’ll develop a taste for meditation quickly. Only determination and consistency will let your mind reach a new level of concentration.

FEELING THE RHYTHM

ByAlisa Znamenskaya

I

have been doing rhythmic and aesthetic gymnastics for 12 years and with my team we became world champions in 2012, 2013 and 2014. During those years I had many injuries and a lot of moments when I couldn’t cope with two 4 hour trainings every day, so I was ready to give up. However I never did. Gymnastics taught me to feel my body, develop my flexibility, but most importantly strengthen my character and self-confidence. In normal life I’m often shy and keep emotions inside. Dancing is the way I express myself while nobody is judging and I can show the real me. I can transform my experiences, positive or negative, into a story, which I present with my body. Every tiny movement has its meaning and in the end it results into a performance, which narrates something that truly excites or worries me.

63

When I perform I try to be focused on what I am doing and on completing my long-term, permanent goals that include enjoying being me, making the audience enjoy my dance and understanding the choreography and emotions I want to convey. Sometimes it’s nearly impossible for me to cope with the nerves before performing. This has taught me the importance of feeling the moment in order to have a great charge of energy!

I believe the general aim of all professional dancers is to inspire the audience, as dance is the best way of spiritual development. Dance inspires people, leads to harmony and balance. It makes people more liberated, sociable, attentive and sensual. I will never forget those moments of pure happiness when some young girls came to my team after a competition to take photos and tell us that we inspired them to do gymnastics.

Comfortably Elegant

By Lorenzo Masiello

Have you ever had to be fashionable for an event and you were annoyed just by the idea of feeling uncomfortable with those hard shoes or the suit pants? Well if you have felt one of those symptoms before you may need to change a little bit your smart outfit with one (or more) of the suggestions that will follow. First of all, before I start, I have to say that if what most annoys you is the shirt or the blazer I’m afraid this article won’t help you solve this problem, as these two are the basis of this kind of outfit. Having said that, let’s begin. First of all, once you assumed that a shirt and a blazer are essential, you have to choose a colour for the blazer: a light one for daytime events and for hot seasons (especially in spring) and a dark one for night-time. For the first one, I would choose a beige (particularly if you’re blonde), light blue or white, is fine as well., for the second one instead, you can have a common black, which must be matched with black trousers/jeans, grey and navy blue. I would obviously recommend have one for each occasion. Now let’s move to the shirt. Of course you’ll need a white one that is going to suit every outfit except if you’re wearing a white blazer or trousers. Then a light blue shirt is also a must-have as this is perfect for both day and night-time, which can be matched with a beige, white or grey blazer. For shirts I would just recommend these two as you can create enough outfits from them; however if needed you could add a blue one. If possible try to avoid checked or striped shirts, they look either unfashionable or too formal. The trousers or jeans should be a bit skinny; however please DO NOT wear slim or boot-cut ones for obvious reasons. So for trousers you should have a pair of beige ones, as they are perfect for every daytime event and match with most blazers and shirts, so with those you should be done.I would also have a pair of white pants that look very good with a light blue shirt under a beige blazer.

68

For night-time you must have a pair of dark blue jeans, which fit with a grey or navy blue blazer with a basic white shirt and a pair of black ones for the black blazer, which must always be matched with that nice white shirt. Now that we have almost completed our outfit, we have to choose a pair of shoes, as the formal ones can have destructive effects on your feet (particularly if you have to dance). For daytime events a pair of white or blue tennis shoes like the ones from Fred Perry are a perfect match if the dress code is informal. In case it wasn’t informal, a pair of navy blue loafers are a must-have, as you can combine many outfits with them. For night-time you can choose between a more formal look with a pair of casual shoes, as the ones from Clarks, or if you have to be more informal you can wear a pair of trainers from Lacoste or even a pair of sneakers from the Air Force collection of Nike, as long as they have very basic colours. We could finish our outfit here, but you know... the devil is the detail, so to really complete it we should also have a leather, black belt. If you want to be really eye-catching I would choose one from exclusive brands such as Salvatore Ferragamo or Gucci, just saying (you don’t have to go bankrupt to look smart!)... In order to finish I would recommend wearing a watch on the left arm and a leather bracelet, brown for daytime and black for nighttime, in the right one. Here there are all the most relevant suggestions I have to tell you, now it’s up to you to follow them, to improve them or if you already dress like this you’re on the right track.

By Adriana Crovetto Edited by Josep Oliver Juan

Let me introduce myself: My name is Adriana Crovetto and I am a twenty-one-year-old girl with Italian and Russian origins but I was raised in Lugano (Switzerland). In June of 2014, I obtained my Cantonal Diploma at my local public High School, after which I attended the Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne, where I enrolled in the Faculty of Materials, Science & Engineering. Despite the fact that my studies have been in the field of science, I have found that there can be many different roads to success and satisfaction. You mustn’t ever be afraid to embark on something new. Today, fashion is no longer a pastime for me, but it is a source of motivation, and being the manager of my own brand is no longer a “school desk fantasy” but it is a reality from which I am learning as a young businesswoman. Last April, I took a trip to Uzbekistan and I fell in love with the colorful traditional fabrics of Fergana Valley, which borders Afghanistan. I thus decided to create a new brand, design my own outfits and launch myself into the colorful trends of the spring/summer season in Ticino (my canton).

70

The fabrics I use are a mix of silk and cotton, and they undergo special processes with natural dyes and traditional looms. Because of this, they are very original in their designs and their range of lively colours, which are chosen by me with special attention to adapt to European taste. Subsequently, the products are entirely handsewn by a team of native women who I personally direct and who strive to make each piece unique. After encountering some success in Lugano, I showed up at the Geneva lakeside stands during the famous Fête de Genève, which, this year, has attracted tourists from all around the world. On that occasion I was struck by how both tourists and locals, were open to something new, and how they were pleasantly interested not only in my products, but in the entire project. Probably, the strong point of my project was giving not only a commercial value but also an emotional value to each of my coats. I also presented my brand in Milan on the 29th of September in line with the Fashion Week at the ancient Oratory of St. Ambrose, a unique and exciting event that breathed the air of Central Asia and listened to the call of the ancient Silk Road.

-What was your relationship with fashion before all of this? I had no serious relationship with fashion, but I was always attentive to aesthetics. - What is your role in the company? I’m the founder & the manager (Yes, I did this all alone, but I have an Uzbek friend that helped me find contacts in Uzbekistan). I also design the outfits, choose colours and fabrics in Uzbekistan and organize the three girls that hand-sew the pieces for me. - What kind of products do you produce? I produce coats, jackets, vests and bags.

71

- What is your motto? “Translating yesterday’s tradition to today’s glamour”. - What can you tell us about your participation in Milan Fashion Week? Milan is going to be amazing. To create a brand from scratch, in time with the fashion week, is a great experience for me and a perfect occasion to spread the word about my brand. - What are your future plans for the company? I want to spread my project here in Barcelona and I hope to find the right partners at ESADE, because this project is rapidly expanding, so I need some help.

Street Style to wear NOW! By Carmen van Klaveren

1. Go for a discreet chic with a trench coat The good old beige trench is revived in today’s street style. Amp it up with a silky dress and some ankle boots.

2. A mid-season knit is always a winner Drop the hoodie this season. For a sporty style, get a cricket tank - an easy way to transfer into fall and score in style. Match it with a summery white tee.

72

3.Diveintothestirruptrouser Ready to wear the new ski-style pant? The stirrup trouser is in this season, as long as there’s a graphic heel involved. A little controversial yet very tempting!

6. Supersize your It bag Hang your logo bag in the closet and go get a max ‘It’ bag. Get a voluminous carry-all as seen in Gucci, Balenciaga, or Mulberry.

4. Wear a med-Sev dress Give your wardrobe a Seventies twist just like in several catwalks this season. The term “med-Sev” is here for a reason. Slip on a dress keeping it modern with an abbreviated hemline and chunky platform booties. Check out the Fendi autumn/ winter show.

7. Wear party boots 24/7 Don’t be afraid of using some eye-popping knee boots peeping out from beneath an oversized day dress.

73

85. Get ready for head-totoe color Matching suits are definitely giving a little more color to the fall season. Pick your shade - fuchsia, marigold, or amethyst – venture in the old-fashioned chic. Get that new, ultra-confident style that’s hard to resist.

8. Velvet by daylight Can’t deny velvet is in all stores! Get those floorsweeping jewel-tone velvet trousers and pare them down with a classic Levi’s cropped denim jacket.

Recycling your clothes The struggle is real: finding your own personal style can be sometimes difficult and a lack of imagination can be an everyday headache. Even if our closets are filled with so many items, we’re always wondering what to do with them, but actually your source of inspiration is right in front of you: so open your closet and mind and let’s start !

Never abandon your clothes (except if it’s non-recoverable)

Pimp up your look with accessories Accessories are used to upgrade an outfit, but let’s be honest we all own the same things. So here are some ways to pimp up your look in a particular way.

Faded jeans? pieces that went out of style? NEVER throw anything away, here are some tips that you can use to bring your favorite jean/pant back to life:

Chokers were a 90’s must have but this last year they found their way back to our closets. If you love to wear them but want to be unique at the same time, try to create your own personalized choker. The first option you have is to buy a classic choker and attach a pendant to it (try to put something personal, I usually hang symbols reflecting my country). The second option is to make your own from scratch.

We all have a pile of old jeans sitting in our closets. It is really simple to rectify this situation. When your jeans are losing their original color, just take them to the dry cleaner and ask them to dye them again. Advice: You have to dye them in their original color, never try to dye them another color. Another way to recycle your jeans/pants is to turn them into shorts. After trying one of these two options, try to personalize your new article (by using studs, ripping them, etc.).

You can use this tip to revamp any jewelry piece.

Eventually, you can do this with everything, shirts, skirts, (go on YouTube or Pinterest for some inspiration).

74

and creating your own style By Mariyem Sqalli

Earrings: If you lose an earring don’t stop wearing the other one. Even if it seems really strange, wearing one single earing is really trendy and an increasing number of celebrities and brands are endorsing this: Emma Watson, Loewe, Isabel Marrant... Sneakers: A simple way to give a second chance to your shoes is to change your shoelaces. You can play with the sizes and colors: mix different color patterns, you can also choose big ones in order to create a sizable bow. Or just use some original pins and plug it into your old ones. Pins/Patchwork: If you want to have a really cool jacket/bag/t-shirt...., you can personalize it with pins. You can find really stylish and cheap ones at Stradivarius. Another way to do this is through the “patchwork” technique: you can glue on (or even sew, if you are an expert) all the fabrics and items you like in a messy way.

One item ? Different options ! The final advice I can give you is that you can use a single item in different ways. For example, you can use a scarf as a bow and attach it to your jean or use it as a hair accessory. You can also use the ribbon of your dress as a pussycat bow for your shirt or as a tie for your neck. All of the examples mentioned above are just here to give you some ideas, remember what’s really important : your personality.

So always trust your instinct, be authentic, be confident, and express yourself through fashion !

Trends this season ? Suede, lace and pearls

THE INTANGIBLE ATTRACTION The word “smart casual” confuses the majority with ambiguity standing out above all. Our interpretation of these two words lies in our understanding of them separately. This winter lets delve into the clarification of what “smart casual” represents and how we can take out the divine beauty within us with the simplest of outfits and chiciest of accessories to accompany them. Lets keep it simple yet enticing.

GYM THE TOP FIVE EXERCISES

By Alex Audic

The Magic of compound movements No matter what your fitness level is, if you are advanced, professional or a beginner, these exercises will get you closer to your goals! These exercises have proven their effectiveness throughout the years. They were staples 50 years ago, when Arnold built his physique at Gold’s Gym in the sixties, and remain the foundation of the routines of bodybuilders, fitness models, athletes, or actors till today They are what we call, the “Golden Five”.

SO, WHAT ARE COMPOUND MOVEMENTS? Compound movements, are exercises involving multiple joints, therefore different parts of your body and several of your biggest muscles at the same time. Consequences: - Your body naturally works as a whole. - You gain overall strength and therefore size in your biggest muscles. - By working as a whole, your body corrects the muscle imbalances you could potentially have. - As you use different main muscles, you burn calories and fat better than with cardio. - You make your workout shorter and more efficient, thus saving time. Keep in mind that you can do all these exercises at the Corner4 gym we have on campus!

1- DEADLIFT This is probably the best lift there is. It looks simple, you just lift a barbell from the floor… But to have a proper form, almost every big muscle of your body needs to be properly engaged. The deadlift is THE exercise that increases your overall strength and size. It is what will make you evolve from a lower fitness level to a higher. On the other hand it burns a crazy load of calories. Muscles involved: - Glutes (therefore a great exercise for girls who want a stronger booty) - Hamstrings and Quads - Back —>Your entire posterior chain But also: -Your core (one of the best movements for strong abs) -Your arms, traps, chest…you name a muscle, it’s probably helping it too..

90

How to perform a deadlift: -Keep your feet slightly wider than your shoulder width with your toes pointing a bit outward. Your hands should grab the bar just outside the legs. Your shoulders need to be just over the bar, and the bar over your feet, close to your body. Lift the bar while maintaining a strong core so your back stays straight with a slight arch. Hips back and chest out. Your arms should be straight at all times, never pulling the bar. Once the bar gets above your knee, start extending your legs and push the hips forward. Stay up straight for two seconds, then put the bar down, pushing the hips back and bending the legs. ALWAYS KEEP THE BACK STRAIGHT, NEVER ROUNDED!

2- Barbell SQUATS THE exercise to never skip! If you are a girl, squats are the exercise you should focus on! Increase your squat lifts, and see how your glutes and overall body transform. Focus mainly on improving your barbell squats, and then you can start thinking about other variations like jumping squats, dumbbell squats, etc‌ If you are a guy, you should be as proud of your squat gains as of your bench gains! The squat is a lift that you should try to better, no matter what your level is. Muscles involved: -Glutes -Quads -Hamstrings -Calves —> Therefore your entire lower body But also: Back, Traps, Core (one the best exercises for your abs, along with deadlifts)

How to perform a pro barbell Squat: Place your feet at shoulder width while keeping your toes slightly outward and place the bar on your shoulders. With your core engaged and your chest up, begin to lower your body by pushing the hips back. Stop when your hips are just under the knees. Then use the glutes to raise you up, pushing your hips forward. Keep pressure on your heels throughout the whole movement.

91

3- PULL-UPS If you want to get this famous V-tapper, doing pull ups is the way to go! This exercise will widen your body and show overall upper-body strength. In addition to that, pull-ups will improve your body posture by strengthening your back muscles. If you cannot do a pull-up, get stronger on lat pull-downs, assisted pull-ups and negative pull-ups, until you manage to do your first pull-up. If you can already do pull-ups, try adding weights for a few reps. In addition to making you stronger, this will allow you to increase the number of standard pull-ups you can do. Muscles involved: -Lats -Biceps -Traps -Shoulders

How to perform it: - Grab the pull-up bar wider than shoulder width. While contracting your core, your back and expanding your chest, bring your chin at the bar level. To have a better contraction of your lats, think as though you want to tuck your elbows into your back. The chin-up is a great alternative to the pull-up. Simply take a closer grip with your palms facing you and perform the same movement! It is usually easier and focuses more on your biceps.

4- BENCH PRESS “How much do you bench bro?” is one of the questions you guys will be asked frequently if you start going to the gym. Probably the favorite exercise of most male gym-rats, the bench-press is a must-do to improve your chest size and overall upper-body strength. You can do it with barbells, with dumbbells or on flat, incline or decline benches. Muscles involved: -Chest -Shoulders -Triceps —> most of your upper-body

92

How to perform the Bench-Press: - Lie down on the bench with your feet flat on the ground to create a solid base. While your buttocks are ALWAYS in contact with the bench, you want to arch your back a little bit and contract your traps. This allows you to keep your shoulder blades together, putting the stress on your chest and preventing any shoulder injury. Bring the bar or dumbbell to the chest in a controlled movement, then push. If you do not have a spotter, it is safer to use dumbbells.

5- OVERHEAD PRESS This is a great exercise to build strong and popping shoulders. It will work the three heads of the deltoid: interior, medial and posterior. Muscles involved: -Front delt, Medial delt, side delt -Traps -Triceps What is the proper form of the shoulder press? -You can do it standing up or sitting on a bench, either way keep your core fully contracted. Lift the bar or the dumbbells, with your elbows.

So there you have it! Compound movements are the main exercises you should be focusing on in the gym. Not only will they make you look good, but also help you perform better outside the gym by creating a good muscle synergy. PROTEIN POWDER

By Alex Audic

What’s this sorcery? If you know anyone who is into fitness, you’ve probably heard of protein powder especially since exercising has become such a massive trend in the 21st century. However, if you don’t know much about it, you’d probably see it in a negative light. Discussing what it exactly is, why its consumption can be useful, and if it really can be harmful is essential to fully understand this mysterious powder.

WHAT IS THIS MAGIC POWDER? -Protein powder can come from different sources like milk, soy, beans, rice, etc… Nevertheless, milk protein is the most commonly used, and is often referred to as “whey”. To simplify, whey protein powder is essentially a dried-up byproduct from the production of cheese and other dairy products. - During cheese production the fatty parts of the milk is used to make the curd while the liquids remaining from that process end up to be what is called the whey. It’s the liquid you can sometime find on top of your yogurt and usually throw away! In fact, you’ve already probably taken whey protein unknowingly. WHY DO WE TAKE IT? The whey is then filtered to remove any undesired substances that linger within, turned into powder, -Our muscle fibers are made out of protein. Micro-tears occur in these and flavored so it has an enjoyable taste. fibers when we exercise, and as they recover the tear is replaced with more muscle thus creating strength; this happens thank to the protein we supply our body. This is why people who exercise a lot, should increase their protein consumption (sometimes up to 2 grams of protein per kilogram of bodyweight). Supplements can be useful to fulfill this purpose. -Furthermore, whey is a very high quality protein, as it contains all the essential amino acids, particularly Branched Chained Amino Acids (BCAA). -Whey is usually taken after workouts, because as explained before your torn muscle fibers need protein to recover. Whey is easily digested 94 and quickly absorbed by your body, therefore starting muscle repair sooner.

THEN WHY DON’T WE TAKE ALL OUR PROTEIN FROM WHOLE FOODS? You can! Your body doesn’t differentiate between sources of protein, as long as it gets the amino acids. One 25-gram scoop of whey protein powder contains around 21-24 grams of protein, which is roughly the same amount found in 100 grams of meat, fish, beans, or a few eggs. Supplementing isn’t necessary if you can reach the required daily intake of protein.

IS THERE ANY DANGER TO CONSUMING PROTEIN POWDER? If you have a balanced diet, with a proper intake of your other two macronutrients (fats and carbohydrates) and do not exceed your daily recommendation, there is no danger to consuming protein powder. Once again, your body makes no difference between protein powder and fish, meat, beans or other whole food protein! It is unnecessary to consume more protein (from any source) than what is recommended. It’ll simply be eliminated through your urine.

How much protein does our body need? Every person needs a different amount of protein intake which varies by gender, weight, age, height, and activity level. A useful tool is the Interactive DRI from the USDA, which can be found online. However, some people consume protein in the form of supplements for several reasons:

1- Convenience: When heading back from a workout, you rarely have the will to start preparing a meal. Adding a scoop of whey to your shaker, a bit of water (or milk) and shaking it for a few seconds is “whey faster” !!!

WHY ARE PEOPLE SO SCARED OF PROTEIN THEN? This misconception comes from the origins of bodybuilding, as we know it. During the 1960’s, bodybuilders started using illegal steroids, which could seriously damage their organs (particularly the liver and the kidneys). When doctors asked them what they had changed in their routine that could cause such damages, they simply said that they increased their protein consumption, as they did not want to admit the illegal drug consumption. This is why some doctors started to question protein, when the real problem was steroid consumption. There is no scientific evidence that an excess of protein intake can damage a healthy person’s kidneys or liver.

2- Satisfaction: After an exhausting workout, you generally crave a sweet vanilla/chocolate milkshake, than a dry tasteless chicken breast. 3- Cost: Most sources of protein like meat and fish are relatively expensive. Supplements represent the cheapest way to increase your daily intake of protein. 4- Quality: Good protein powder is easily digested and used to cover the body’s needs. In addition, as far as whey is concerned it contains all the essential amino acids the body needs.

Nowadays, people still have a negative view on supplements. The reason for this is that they do not know much about them, and as the bodybuilding world is usually related to doping, it’s easy to get confused.

BOTTOM LINE

Protein powder is just like any powder, such as baby formula, chocolate milk, or coffee; in the end it’s something we enjoy adding to our day.

Protein supplements are not harmful in the least. They’re simply a healthy way to increase protein consumption in order to meet daily needs. In the end, taking supplements is a choice and whether you choose to consume it depends on your own personal needs. Nevertheless, the most important thing is to have a diet that is both 95 and balanced and an active lifestyle. healthy
