Middle East Passenger Traffic up 9.4 Percent
Airports in the Middle East continued to experience strong growth in passenger movements at 9.4 percent in 2014.
T
his was showed by preliminary figures released by Airports Council International Asia Pacific. The increase was mainly driven by Dubai International, now the world’s busiest international hub, where traffic jumped 6.1 percent despite a temporary runway closure in mid-2014.
Asia Pacific witnessed moderate growth at 5.9 percent, with Beijing Capital International Airport having handled 86 million travellers. Double-digit increase was recorded in air freight traffic in the Middle East at 11.8 percent, while Asia Pacific posted a 5.7 percent surge.

HOTEL PERFORMANCE WEEKLY NEWS Dubai and Abu Dhabi: A Different Tale for Two Cities
T
he two emirates experienced contrasting results for January, as gross operating profit per available room (GOPPAR) fell by 7.4 percent to USD281.79 in Dubai, whilst Abu Dhabi saw that metric’s levels increase by 1.2 percent to USD88.38. Four- and five-star hotels in Dubai experienced softening market conditions as average room rates (ARR) dropped 4.6 percent, whereas occupancy levels grew by a marginal 0.4 percentage points to 86.5 percent. The reduction in ARR had a profound impact on revenue streams as RevPAR declined by 4.2 percent and total RevPAR fell 7.8 percent. On the other hand, Abu Dhabi properties recorded an encouraging growth in performance levels; RevPAR increased by 6.1 percent to USD129.41, led by a 3.8 percentage point rise in occupancy to 78.3 percent, and ARR climbed one percent. Strengthening conferencing demand benefitted performance levels as total RevPAR and GOPPAR rose by 3.7 percent and 1.2 percent respectively.
With the two most cosmopolitan destinations in the UAE, Dubai and Abu Dhabi showing a rather contrasting picture in nearly every metric, the region’s hospitality scene could not be more diverse. According to HotStats’ January results, things looked good for Cairo and Doha, but Kuwait witnessed a contraction across all its hotel performance indicators.
Kuwait Market Struggles
H
otels in Kuwait saw RevPAR decline by 18.5 percent to USD127.42, as the majority of the market cut rates to maintain market share. ARR fell by 19.7 percent to USD242.35, while occupancy increased marginally by 0.7 percentage points to 52.6 percent. A reduction in corporate travel also weighed down other revenue streams as total RevPAR contracted by 18.9 percent, pushing GOPPAR levels to slide significantly to USD117.44.
21 MARCH 2015
Robust Picture for Cairo and Doha
H
oteliers in both Egypt’s and Qatar’s capital cities enjoyed exceptional performance levels as RevPAR growth outpaced most MENA markets, surging 88.4 percent and 24.3 percent, respectively. Doha saw RevPAR levels reach a two-year high as occupancy increased by 12.2 percentage points to 82.4 percent and ARR rose 5.9 percent to USD225.94. An uptake in corporate and conference demand helped drive double-digit growth in both food and beverage as well as conferencing revenues by 22.9 percent and 39.9 percent, respectively. Properties in Cairo witnessed a strong revival in leisure and group travel to the city, as occupancy surged 24 percentage points to 59.2 percent, leading hoteliers to implement more aggressive yielding strategies, with ARR growing by 11.9 percent to USD108.99. The uptake in hotel demand transcended to higher food and beverage demand as total RevPAR increased by 75.3 percent to USD118.51, allowing GOPPAR levels to more than double to USD59.25 for the period.

Emirates Stays Committed to European Market
E
mirates released the results of a socioeconomic impact study that measures its contribution to the European economy. The survey conducted by Frontier estimates that Emirates’ operations, including the catalytic impact of the 220 connections it offers, supported 85,100 jobs across the European Union in 2013-14. In addition, Emirates’ Airbus A380 deliveries for the same period translated into 41,000 jobs, equivalent to EUR3.4 billion (USD3.8 billion) in GDP. The study notes that considering the breadth of the airline’s network and how air travel demand is expected to double in the next five to 10 years, the carrier is well positioned to bring a growing number of tourists and business travellers to Europe, further enabling trade and investment.

RENDEZVOUS TRAVEL TRADE WEEKLY: How have the closure of RAK Airways and the establishment of Air Arabia’s hub challenged the management and the operations at Ras Al Khaimah International Airport in 2014? MOHAMMED QAZI: 2014 was a year of many changes at Ras Al Khaimah International Airport. During the year, we had the commencement of our new national carrier, Air Arabia, which has been a very successful launch. [...] There are plans to have a number of new routes launched this year. In addition, we have set up a ground handling business and our on-time performance is above 97 percent. This is a great achievement for the whole operations team. It is also a tremendous result for the airport management team which identified this opportunity and started a new business, and delivered profitable results from the very start. We also had seasonal Hajj charters in 2014, and again, we delivered flawless service to our customers. We also supported the training and back-ofhouse preparation for the Red Bull Air Races, where we received a number of commendations from the organisers. While we had a year of many changes and challenges, the teams raised their game on every occasion to deliver optimum results. We are also supported by the chairman, H.E. Sheikh Salem bin Sultan bin Saqr Al-Qasimi, who has extended his invaluable support continuously to help us deliver consistent performance across the board. TRAVEL TRADE WEEKLY: Which achievements are you most proud of? MOHAMMED QAZI: In terms of load factors, [up until the end of December 2014] we achieved an average of above 70 percent, while in the last couple of months figures soared above 80 percent. In fact, some routes, such as Pakistan, delivered results above 90 percent. It is evident that Ras Al Khaimah International Airport is attracting origin and destination traffic with healthy load factors. […] The reason behind such results is the hassle-free nature of our operations. We keep it simple and passengers love it. As per the latest poll, more than 90 percent of the passengers gave positive feedback. Likewise, airlines have 21 MARCH 2015

All flight schedules are shared in advance in order to help plan, and meetings are being held on regular basis to share plans and implement procedures.
