WEEKLY NEWS AIRPORTS Dubai to Welcome 126 Million Passengers
D
ubai Airports, operator of Dubai International and Al Maktoum International at Dubai World Central, revised its projections for 2020 to over 126 million passengers. As Paul Griffiths, CEO, Dubai Airports, explained at the Future of Borders Conference in Dubai, the ambitious forecast is without the availability of further infrastructure development or space to build at Dubai International. “We will have to come up with other solutions to satisfy Dubai’s continued thirst for growth. In Dubai, we are building, not talking about building,” stressed Griffiths, adding that by 2030, some 200 million travellers are expected to be handled by Dubai’s airports annually.

Partnership to Limit Carbon Footprint
D
ubai Airports partnered with Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) to erect a solar array at Al Maktoum International at Dubai World Central (DWC) to limit its carbon footprint and allow the power generated to be fed directly into DEWA’s power grid. “The solar array is just one of several projects across our airports aimed at adopting ways to limit our environmental impact while safeguarding the significant economic and social contributions the aviation sector provides Dubai. Initiatives such as these take us a step closer to achieving that ambition,” said Majed Al Joker, senior vice president, operations, DWC, Dubai Airports.

Ali Majed Al Mansoori, chairman, Abu Dhabi Airports.

RENDEZVOUS TRAVEL TRADE WEEKLY: What are the project’s main strengths? RASHED BU QARA’A: The initiative involves a purpose-built, master-planned city, spanning about 145km2, built around Al Maktoum International Airport (AMIA), which will be the world’s largest when complete. At full build, DWC will support a population of some one million people. Aviation, aerospace and logistics are the defining pillars of DWC’s core activities, but DWC is, above all, a smart and self-sustained urban ecosystem – an attractive and futuristic destination in which to work, do business and live. DWC is a city built for speed. Everything in and around it – [...] - are integrated to provide unparalleled ease of doing business, unmatched connectivity and seamless efficiency. Take, for instance, the Dubai Logistics Corridor that links sea, land and air, and spans an area of approximately 200km2. The corridor links DWC to Jebel Ali Port and Jebel Ali Free Zone, and facilitates rapid movement of cargo from sea-to-air and air-to-sea. Goods offloaded at Jebel Ali Port can swiftly become airborne from the AMIA runway within a few hours, en route to their final destinations. We are working to further shorten this time frame. DWC is also home to the much-anticipated World Expo 2020. TRAVEL TRADE WEEKLY: Over the past years, DWC has played a major role in Dubai’s development as a hub for global aviation and logistics. What achievements stand out? RASHED BU QARA’A: Of course, the milestones that prominently stand out in the public eye relate to AMIA. The airport, when fully operational, will have five runways, and is projected to move 200 million passengers annually – in effect tripling Dubai’s current level of passenger traffic – and 16 million tons of cargo. In a bid to accelerate the expansion at AMIA, the Dubai government in September 2014 sanctioned a USD32 billion fund for the project. In June 2010, AMIA opened to cargo flights. Our partner Emirates Sky Cargo now operates at DWC from its own dedicated terminal building. The landing of the first passenger flight at AMIA in October 2013 was also historic. In November 2014, DWC’s Aviation District broke ground for a completion 28 MARCH 2015
Q & A with
Rashed Bu Qara’a CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER, DUBAI AVIATION CITY CORPORATION
TRAVEL TRADE WEEKLY: DWC is expected to transform the region into an economic super power. What are the next developments to look out for? RASHED BU QARA’A: DWC is positioning itself to support the progress of countries in the Middle East and Africa (MEA) region, many of which contain the world’s fastest growing as well as youngest populations. Citizens of the region also enjoy rising levels of personal income – a surge that has driven spending and demand. The MEA’s combined population is projected to reach 1.8 billion inhabitants by 2030, with an average age of just 23.4 years. Such demographics necessitate rapid delivery of essential goods and services related to food, healthcare, education and tourism with greater speed and efficiency than ever before. Organisations looking to capitalise on such opportunities will clearly see the value-proposition in making DWC their base […]. TRAVEL TRADE WEEKLY: How will DWC benefit Dubai in the long run?
RASHED BU QARA’A, CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER, DUBAI AVIATION CITY CORPORATION, TALKS ABOUT HOW DUBAI WORLD CENTRAL (DWC), A STRATEGIC INITIATIVE OF THE GOVERNMENT OF DUBAI, SEEKS TO LEVERAGE THE DESTINATION’S UNIQUE ADVANTAGE AS A VITAL CONNECTION POINT BETWEEN EAST AND WEST. center that will be operated by Falcon Aviation. It will be the only facility of its kind in the region. In the same month, we signed an agreement with STTS Group, a major player in aircraft painting, which will build a multi-purpose facility to service various aircraft. A 6,000m2 executive terminal is also scheduled for completion by the fourth quarter, hosting key business aviation players including Jet Aviation, XJet and Jetex. Developments in DWC’s Logistics
District are also noteworthy with activities in this district giving DWC its strong logistics edge. […] [This February], the Aviation District welcomed Lufthansa Technik, one of the leading maintenance, repair and overhaul players in the world. In the same month, the district also announced the development of new aerospace supply chain facilities as part of its efforts in shaping a comprehensive ecosystem dedicated to the aviation industry.
RASHED BU QARA’A: DWC is aligned with the Dubai Strategic Plan 2021 and will contribute to achieving its objectives – to become a city of happy, creative and empowered people, a preferred place to work, live and visit, a smart and sustainable city, a pivotal hub for the global economy, and a destination that boasts excellent governance. DWC will consolidate Dubai’s image as the world’s leading aviation and aerospace hub. As per the Dubai Airports Strategic Plan 2020, international passenger and cargo traffic at both Dubai International and DWC will increase at an average annual rate of 7.2 percent and 6.7 percent respectively. By 2020, Dubai’s aviation industry is projected to account for 22 percent of the emirate’s employment and a third of its GDP. [...] The fact that DWC is the venue for Expo 2020 also carries its own economic pull. Around 25 million visitors, of which 70 percent will be international, are expected to attend. Estimates indicate that the economic impact generated by the Expo between now and 2021 will be some USD26.5 billion - much of this value is expected to be retained within the UAE. Over the next six years, more than 275,000 jobs are set to be created in and around the UAE to service the Expo.
