Jazeera Airways Group′s net profit rose 44.6 percent in the first quarter (Q1) of the year, compared to the same period in 2014, reaching KWD3 million (USD10 million), driven by an increase in demand and higher load factors.

IDeaS and TravelClick Partner on New Project IDeaS and TravelClick announced their research and development partnership which will allow the latter’s customers to incorporate data into IDeaS’ revenue management system (RMS).

he two companies recognise that targeted data has a significant role in hoteliers’ decisionmaking process therefore the joint venture will specifically focus on including TravelClick’s business intelligence tool, Demand360, into IDeaS’ RMS. “Demand360 is TravelClick’s most comprehensive market intelligence product, and being able to provide our customers with IDeaS price optimisation and forecasting capabilities will immediately improve performance and provide hoteliers with better insights to make smarter business decisions,” elaborated Sanjay Nagalia, chief operating officer, IDeaS.

Travelport: Double-digit Growth for Regional Industry

T

ravelport expects both online and offline sales to continue to soar in the USD72 billion Middle Eastern travel market. According to the travel commerce platform provider, online travel bookings, which currently represent 25 percent of all bookings in the region, are set to increase over the coming years to reach 36 percent by the end of 2017, when online revenue is anticipated to grow to USD35 billion. Similarly, offline sales are predicted to climb from USD54 billion in 2014 to USD63 billion by 2017. In light of these, hybrid travel agents are set to emerge as successful regional agents, fuelled by a young, affluent population with a tendency to travel.

By understanding communication patterns and flows, real-time insights can be delivered to the management enabling them to better manage risk and improve compliance. ravelport and Etihad Airways announced the extension of their multiyear full-content agreement which ensures that agents worldwide have access to effectively search, compare and book the airline’s fares and other offerings via Travelport’s travel commerce platform. Etihad Airways has also signed up to participate in Travelport Rich Content and Branding, one of the key components of the technology provider’s suite of merchandising solutions for airlines. It enables the carrier to market and retail its offering more effectively by controlling how its products are visually presented and described on travel agent screens.

Dubai’s Appeal on the Rise

ubai continues to attract an increasing number of travellers from Europe, thanks to improved air connectivity and accessibility to the Middle Eastern destination. Based on data released by Dubai Corporation of Tourism & Commerce Marketing (DCTCM), in 2014, arrivals from Bulgaria rose 104 percent, while figures from Hungary and Romania jumped 86 percent and 64 percent respectively, following the introduction of visa on arrival to citizens of a number of European Union (EU) states. As Issam Kazim, CEO, DCTCM, explained, 46 countries enjoy now visa-free entry to the emirate, boosted by the March 2014 addition of 13 EU states, meaning that citizens of all 28 EU members can benefit from seamless access to Dubai.

ccording to World Economic Forum’s global Travel & Tourism Competitiveness Index, the UAE is the highest placed nation in MENA, occupying the 24th place overall. Other emerging markets, including Brazil, China, Mexico and Singapore also appeared in the top 30, indicating the opportunities for countries around the world to reap economic and societal benefits from tourism. Spain led the rankings, while traditionally strong travel and tourism destinations such as France, Germany, US, UK, Switzerland, Australia, Italy, Japan and Canada completed the top 10.

ith GCC and MENA visitors already accounting for 33 percent of the emirate’s tourism numbers, Dubai aims to exploit the booming intra-Arab travel trend. As H.E. Helal Saeed Almarri, director general, Dubai Department of Tourism & Commerce Marketing, noted, regional tourism has played a crucial part in the destination’s growth over the past two decades. “There is still significant potential to increase visitation, thanks to the connectivity provided by Dubai Airports and our home airlines, Emirates and flydubai, the visa policies of the UAE, and the range of hotels, attractions and events which appeal to travellers from the region,” added Almarri.

ver 40 executives from public and private bodies in Qatar completed a course organised by Qatar Tourism Authority (QTA) and conducted by the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), aimed at growing the human capital employed in the tourism sector. The module examined key concepts, processes and best practices in developing tourism professionals and service providers, based on lessons learned internationally and throughout the MENA region. Hassan Al Ibrahim, chief tourism development officer, QTA, stressed the importance of human assets in the sustainability of destinations, highlighting that only professionals can deliver competitive tourism products.

bu Dhabi Airports inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) to promote collaboration and strategic partnership between the entities. The two parties will work together through teamwork between the employment centre and alumni affairs at the UAEU to provide suitable training opportunities for students, various employment chances for graduates and substantial scholarships for students, as well as to support joint research to encourage the development of technology projects. Mohamed Mubarak Al Mazrouei, CEO, Abu Dhabi Airports, said that attracting graduates to the aviation industry was one of the company’s top priorities.

ulf Asia Contracting, part of RP Group, has been awarded over AED2.28 billion (USD620 million) in civil and industrial construction contracts in the UAE making it a significant player in the industry as the company expands its operations across the region. Developments include projects of some AED1.78 billion (USD485 million) in Ajman, like the City Towers, Ajman Corniche, Yasmeen Towers and Oasis Towers. As Vinod Pillai, group general manager, RP Group, suggested, the company strongly believes in the future development of Ajman. “Ajman is an affordable destination and is increasingly becoming attractive to first-time home owners and investors,” he added.

Mall of Qatar Promises to Be Different

reating a super-regional commercial centre like Mall of Qatar, which is due to open in the first quarter of 2016, presented both challenges and opportunities, as Rony Mourani, general manager, Mall of Qatar, revealed. Speaking at this year’s Cityscape Qatar in Doha, Mourani said, “Live entertainment is going to be our main attraction [...]. We are planning major entertainment concepts, including a Cirque-style resident performing troupe interspersed with well-known international acts and shows […] on a daily basis on the Oasis rotating stage lift – the first professional stage of its kind in a mall in the world.”

SCTA: Tourism Can Eradicate Unemployment

t the recent Saudi Excellence in Tourism Awards, H.R.H. Prince Sultan bin Salman bin Abdul Aziz, president, Saudi Commission for Tourism & Antiquities (SCTA), highlighted that the domestic tourism sector can eliminate unemployment in the country stressing that the authority does not intend to recruit foreign workforce. “These expectations are based on many studies and on the sector’s prospective growth in the light of a serious turn by citizens towards employment in tourism, which has made it the second most important sector in terms of Saudisation in the Kingdom,” he elucidated.

he Jordanian government approved a proposal put forward by Nayef Al-Fayez, tourism and antiquities minister, Jordan, that aimed to simplify entry visa policies for tourists arriving to the country. The amendments include waiving visa fees for visitors of all nationalities coming via Jordanian tour operators and spending a minimum of two consecutive nights in the Kingdom, as well as for independent travellers who stay in Jordan for more than three nights. Moreover, it was agreed to reduce costs for tourists that enter through land borders and waive the departure tax and entry visa requirements for all low-cost and charter flight passengers arriving to Aqaba’s King Hussein International Airport.

ue to open in 2016, the company’s second project in the Kingdom will be located between the beach and the city centre and will exude a resort feel with 193 units, two banquet and conference rooms, two restaurants, two nightclubs, a business centre and a health club. As Gavin Faull, president, SwissBelhotel International, noted, SwissBelhotel Bahrain will follow the successful launch of Swiss-Belhotel Seef and will mark the hotelier’s 12th property in the region.

Oman to Welcome Duqm Beach Resort

D

uqm Special Economic Zone Authority granted a plot of land for the development of a mixed-use project, consisting of a five- and a four-star property, an entertainment and recreation centre, residential dwellings, an international school and commercial space for a shopping centre and offices. Duqm Beach Resort will be constructed across a 45ha area utilising a total investment in excess of USD500 million. With construction starting in the fourth quarter of the year, it is expected to be completed within the next five years. The first phase will be devoted to the establishment of infrastructure, tourism and other commercial activities, along with residential units.

yatt unveiled Hyatt Place Taghazout Bay, the first property to open under the Hyatt Place brand on the African continent. Located 17km north of the Moroccan coastal town of Agadir, the 152-key hotel forms part of Taghazout Bay Resort, the country’s new sustainable development overlooking the Atlantic coastline. Guests can enjoy a range of amenities, including an 18hole golf course, a tennis club and an on-site surf camp. As Peter Fulton, group president, Europe, Middle East, Africa and southwest Asia, Hyatt, noted, with the addition of four new projects, the company aims to double its African portfolio within the next three years.

illennium & Copthorne Hotels Middle East & Africa (MEA) has further expanded its presence in the region with its second project in Kuwait, the 295room Millennium Hotel & Convention Centre Kuwait. Located in the Salmiya district, the property is spread across 18 storeys and is home to one of the largest convention centres in the country, with 21 ultra-modern function rooms, a ballroom and over 6,000m2 of function space. A

new era of the Levant region's low-cost aviation sector began as Air Arabia Jordan's inaugural flight departed from the Kingdom to Kuwait City. In addition to enhancing connectivity for people living in Jordan, the carrier aims to support the development of the local economy. “The Kingdom’s newest carrier provides Jordan-based passengers with cost-effective options to travel across the region while offering excellent value-for-money opportunities for regional travellers to visit Jordan,” remarked Riad Khashman, chairman, Air Arabia Jordan.

mirates announced a three-year shirt sponsorship agreement with one of Portugal’s most successful football clubs, Benfica. Months after the UAE carrier partnered with the team as its official airline, Tim Clark, president, Emirates, joined Luis Filipe Vieira, president, Benfica, at Estadio da Luz stadium to sign the deal, which among other benefits, will see the Fly Emirates logo on the front of the club’s jersey until the end of the 2017-18 season. Clark highlighted Emirates’ investment in Portugal noting that ways to increase the mutually beneficial prospects are being explored.

EGYPTAIR to Resume Flights to Abha

E

GYPTAIR is set to recommence direct operations to its sixth Saudi Arabian destination Abha, in June. “Flights will be operated on Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays,” said Hisham El Nahas, chairman, EGYPTAIR, adding that the Kingdom has always been one of the most important markets for the airline, therefore additional investment, as well as added capacity are needed. EGYPTAIR operates direct flights to Saudi Arabia from Cairo, Alexandria and Sharm El Sheikh with more than 104 weekly frequencies.

Since most of the pilgrims are through religious tour operators, we work closely with local tour operators and Hajj and Umrah travel agencies for special packages and offers to attract small groups, which is the best we can manage due to our total hotel inventory.

Moresby, Papua New Guinea’s capital, witnessed the opening of its first Holiday Inn Express, set in the middle of 48,500m2 of landscaped gardens with recreational facilities available. The brand also further expanded its footprint in Colombia by opening the 200-room Holiday Inn Express Cartagena Bocagrande, located in the city’s modern area, whereas in Huatulco, Mexico, a newly-built 83-room property became the home of the resort town’s first Holiday Inn hotel, offering a number of family friendly amenities.

Southern Africa is blessed with great weather all year round but I would say the best time to visit would be from February to April and September to November. Where would you like to travel for your next holiday? For my next holiday I am planning to explore Drakensberg and finish off with a leisurely trip along the Garden Route but I may just be tempted to discover the Wild Coast. Why should people come to you for travel advice? Asia Pacific Airports Record Growth in February Impacted by a seasonal passenger traffic surge during the Lunar New Year, Asia Pacific airports reported an increase of 9.7 percent, while Middle Eastern hubs registered a boost of seven percent in February.

ccording to Airports Council International, the improvement in traveller movements at Middle East airports was led by Abu Dhabi where figures rose 21.5 percent and Doha where traffic was up 15.6 percent. In the same month, air freight statistics showed a swell for Asia Pacific and the Middle East at 14.3 and 12.3 percent, respectively. Shanghai led Asia Pacific with the highest growth rate at 23.6 percent whereas Dubai’s two hubs came on top in the Middle East at 37.8 percent.

Four Seasons Cairo Shows Art Spirit

I

n the Middle East, where annual visitor arrivals are estimated to reach 101 million by 2020 and 149 million by 2030, focussing on adventure travel offers a platform to extend the benefits of tourism beyond gateway cities, according to Sandra Carvao, communications and publications chief, World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), who spoke at a session of Arabian Travel Market. According to Manal Kelig, executive director, Adventure Travel Trade Association, the adventure sector is currently valued at USD263 billion annually and a cooperation programme among Middle Eastern countries, similar to UNWTO’s Silk Road initiative, could be highly beneficial for the region.

Thailand Eyes Arab Tourists

T

he Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) Dubai and Middle East Office hosted a Discover Thainess networking lunch, which was officiated by Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul, tourism and sports minister, Thailand. “The Middle East has remained an important source market for us with an increase in the total number of arrivals by 49.62 percent in January,” revealed Wattanavrangkul. Moreover, Chalermsak Suranant, director, TAT Dubai and Middle East Office, explained that the Asian country remains popular among Arab travellers as it has been named one of the top 10 Muslim-friendly tourist destinations in the world by the Global Muslim Travel Index. “The recent hosting of the first-ever Thailand Halal Assembly in Bangkok further strengthened Thailand’s position to cater to Muslim travellers,” he added.

Stanislav Kondov has assumed the position of general manager at Park Inn by Radisson Hotel Apartments Al Rigga. Kondov moved to the hotel from Radisson Blu Resort Jizan, where he was in charge of the new conversion. Prior to that, he spent a number of years in sub-Saharan Africa at Radisson Blu Hotel, Lagos and Radisson Blue Hotel Sandton, Johannesburg where he rose to the position of executive assistant manager. Overall, Kondov has over 15 years of experience in the hospitality industry. He is described as a natural leader with a strong financial and hotel operational background.

CHINTAN SHANBHOGUE

Maria Tullberg is Radisson Blu Hotel, Dubai Deira Creek’s new general manager. She will be in charge of the 276-room property’s ongoing refurbishment and financial performance. A graduate of University of Uppsala, Sweden, Tullberg has over 15 years of experience in the hospitality sector. Between 2006 and 2008, she worked as general manager in Stockholm’s Scandic Infra City before becoming district director for Scandic Hotels’ 10 properties in the Stockholm region. Most recently she served as general manager at Radisson Blu Arlandia Hotel and Radisson Blu Skycity Hotel, both located at Stockholm-Arlandia.

Chintan Shanbhogue continues as director of sales at Kempinski Hotel Ajman. Shanbhogue, who holds a bachelor degree in hospitality administration and management, has more than nine years of experience in the industry. Prior to moving to Ajman, he served as senior sales manager at Kempinski Hotel Mall of the Emirates in Dubai. He joined Kempinski from The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company where he was employed in the finance department. In his new role, Shanbhogue will be in charge of managing the property’s sales technology and driving business to the hotel, while also developing relationships with key industry partners and ensuring smooth operations.
