Europe: The Most Visited Region Some 538 million international tourists travelled worldwide in the first half of the year; four percent or 21 million more than in the same period in 2014.

E

urope retained its position as the most popular region, having registered a five percent rise in arrivals as visitors took advantage of a weaker currency in the Eurozone. Growth was predominantly driven by the recovery in Central and Eastern Europe, up six percent, though the western, northern and southern Mediterranean parts of the continent also outgrew the global average. According to Taleb Rifai, secretary general, World Tourism Organization, the figures show that the industry continues to consolidate the positive performance it has had over the last five years.

Group available seat kilometres (ASK) increased by 8.2 percent year-on-year during the period under review, while the airline’s ASKs grew nine percent. Positive results were mainly driven by stronger demand for domestic flights, growth in in-country tourism and a rise in low-cost travel. Encouraging Half-year Hotel Results With 67.5 percent occupancy across European Union member states, up 1.8 percentage points over 2014, the continent’s hotel sector closed a positive half year.

Ryanair Distributes Aer Lingus Proceeds to Shareholders Ryanair plans to pass out EUR398 million, generated from the sales of the company’s 29.8 percent stake in Aer Lingus, to its stakeholders.

T Berlin

he move forms part of the airline’s B Share programme, which will be concluded before December and will bring the total funds returned to shareholders this year to EUR800 million. During its recently-held annual general meeting, Ryanair also briefed participants on new primary airports in Amsterdam, Cologne and Copenhagen, along with a number of other improvements. The airline had earlier raised its full-year traffic forecast to 104 million passengers and its profit guidance by 25 percent to EUR1.2 billion.

A

verage daily rate (ADR) was up three percent, while RevPAR surged 5.8 percent, based on data compiled by European Cities Marketing and MKG Group. Boosted by a number of prominent events, Germany experienced a strong increase in ADR, and many French cities also presented good results, just like the Benelux states. In terms of occupancy, the UK kept the lead with London and Edinburgh topping the list, while in terms of RevPAR, Copenhagen and Budapest reported the best results in Northern and Eastern Europe, where Scandinavian countries faced more challenges.

Air Travel Up in July

European airport trade body, Airports Council International Europe released its traffic report for July, indicating that passenger traffic at the continent’s airports grew 6.7 percent, pointing to a strong peak summer season for air travel.

Alitalia Commits to Turnaround Plan Alitalia’s first half year (H1) financial performance has been in line with the company’s business plan; the board of directors, however, reiterated the need to carry out the airline’s turnaround strategy promptly.

T

he Italian carrier closed the six-month period with a loss of EUR130 million, a slight improvement on expectations, with the result being affected by a major fire at Rome’s airport in May which cost the airline some EUR80 million. During the reviewed timeframe, Alitalia carried 10.3 passengers, recording a load factor of 75 percent. In line with the company’s shifting focus from short-haul to long-haul operations, H1 saw the launch of a number of new routes. 10 OCTOBER 2015

P

assenger traffic at non-European Union airports rebounded after several months of weak growth, reporting a 7.6 percent increase despite continued challenges in Russia. Meanwhile, freight traffic across the European airport network reported tepid improvement of 0.5 percent and aircraft movements were up 2.6 percent, reflecting increased airline capacity.

SHORT BREAK LAPLAND

A MAGICAL TRANSFORMATION

HAILED AS THE HOME OF SANTA CLAUS, LAPLAND IS TRULY UNIQUE. TUCKED AWAY UP NORTH IN EUROPE, THE REGION’S TRAVEL SECTOR IS BUSILY PREPARING FOR THE UPCOMING WINTER SEASON, ENHANCING ITS INFRASTRUCTURE, TOURISM PRODUCTS AND SERVICES. ITS STAKEHOLDERS ARE CONFIDENT; THEIR TIME IS YET TO COME.

espite being truly magical with its Northern Lights, a genuine Christmas spirit and breathtaking nature, Lapland is still largely considered an authentic, off-the-beatentrack destination that is just now being discovered by wider audiences. Evident from the extensive airport developments across the region and new facilities and services, its full potential is yet to be unleashed.

10

“The Finnish Lapland is a destination of the future,” said Maija Loikkanen, marketing director, House of Lapland, the organisation tasked with the promotion of the region. “Our target group is constantly growing, as people look for individualistic, charismatic destinations that offer them a true time-out from their hectic everyday lives. Lapland presents an opportunity for a once-in-alifetime experience rather than a mere holiday trip,” she added. Far from being just a winter wonderland, this unrivalled experience can vary according to the time of year that

one chooses to travel to the region, as each season brings with it unique possibilities for leisure, fun and adventure. “One can experience the moments

Highlighting the variety of activities available to visitors, he added, “In winter one can try ice fishing, husky and reindeer safaris, in addition to skiing in the magical polar nights. But passenger figures reported by Rovaniemi Airport show that Lapland is still most attractive in winter, when the airfield serves as many as 100,000 passengers per month during the peak period. In summertime, this figure drops to around 30,000. A similar trend was expressed by the country’s flag carrier, Finnair, which offers flights to six destinations in Lapland – Rovaniemi, Kittilä, Kuusa-

mo, Kemi, Ivalo and Kajaani – and sees a higher load factor in winter than in summer. Growing figures, especially during winter months, are also seen in cities and towns across the region. Kemi, the only town that boasts direct access to the sea in Lapland, is one of these. “The accommodation statistics of Kemi are growing,” confirmed Titta Vuorinen, public relations, events and

marketing, Kemi Tourism. Listing the city’s main attractions, she revealed that passenger footfall at Icebreaker Sampo, the former icebreaker of the Finnish government, which now cruises around the Gulf of Bothnia, reached 11,600 in the period between late December 2014 and early April this year, while the SnowCastle of Kemi welcomes around 80,000 visitors per year.

As for the type of visitors to Lapland, these seem to be mainly families and couples. This was confirmed by Marko Jääskö, general manager, Santa Claus Holiday Village. SEIZING THE MOMENT In light of the steady growth in interest for the region, Finavia is investing EUR13.5 million in its airports in the region. Improvements are underway at Rovaniemi Airport, which is connected to Helsinki with five daily flights by Finnair and Norwegian, but also receives many charter flights, the number of which is also on the rise. The airport will see revamped security checkpoints, passport control and customs facilities, as well as a new restaurant section, among others. “If all goes as planned, we should be finished and ready in November, just before the start of the winter season,” confirmed Oinas, adding that enhancements were necessary to enable the airport to serve its customers, especially during peak times. Also under Finavia’s programme, Ivalo Airport also saw the introduction of a new extension to the terminal earlier this year, while works on the air traffic area of the recently renovated Kittilä Airport started in August. Kittilä Airport especially anticipates traffic growth this winter when Lufthansa

night stays by foreign visitors was a bit above one million,” said Loikkanen, revealing that the upcoming winter also looks very positive for the region. “The number of Russian tourists has decreased because of the weak economic situation. However, the increasing demand from the UK and Middle Europe compensates for the situation,” she added, highlighting that new market areas like China and other Asian countries are developing very well. The fact that guests flying in from Asia are on the rise was also confirmed by Martti Oinas, regional manager, Lapland, Finavia, who said that more and more Asian passengers are coming in to Rovaniemi Airport from Helsinki Airport. “And just recently I flew to Rovaniemi next to a New Zealander, who was here for a conference trip,” he further enthused. 10 OCTOBER 2015

launches weekly flights between Kittilä and Munich on December 19. INSPIRED BY THE LIGHTS In parallel with the airport infrastructure upgrades, tourism products and services are also being upgraded to enable visitors to get the most out of their Lapland experience. A great example of this is a host of new services created to help guests spot the magnificent Northern Lights, which are a subject of increasing interest for tourists, according to Loikkanen. “Tour operators have developed new services to enable tourists to better spot and enjoy the Northern Lights. For example, one tour operator has set up an Aurora Alarm service, where the guests are woken up whenever the Northern Lights can be seen,” she enthused, stressing that there are also several technical applications for this purpose. “Another example of a new service is Aurora Borealis Cruise [by Lapland Safaris],” Loikkanen further elucidated. The fact that it is not just tour operators that are getting inventive to show off this natural phenomenon is proved by the picturesque Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort, known for its glass igloos. “Kakslauttanen is one of the best places in the world to see the Northern
