April proved to be a landmark month for Brussels Airlines, with the carrier welcoming 837, 646 travellers on board 7,130 flights, a year-on-year passenger growth of 54.6 percent.

E

uropean routes were the most popular, with 693,166 passengers travelling within the continent, representing 82 percent of all customers. All in all, passenger load factor reached 81 percent and the number of flights increased 26 percent over April 2016. This strong performance was mainly driven by the recent opening of new routes to Mumbai and Madeira, which both attracted a high number of travellers. In terms of cargo volumes carried, April indicated a strong growth with 162,191 revenue tonne kilometres transported, a surge of 49.6 percent, while available tonne kilometres jumped 22 percent.

According to STR, European hotels recorded positive performance in the first quarter (Q1) of the year, with RevPAR soaring 6.5 percent year-on-year to reach EUR64.06.

urthermore, occupancy jumped 4.1 percent compared to Q1 2016 to 63.5 percent and average daily rate (ADR) increased 2.3 percent to EUR100.94. Addresses in Spain achieved a 7.2 percent boost in RevPAR to EUR68.06, while occupancy rose 2.3 percent to 67.5 percent and ADR reached EUR100.76, up 4.8 percent. Meanwhile, in the UK, RevPAR surged 6.8 percent, to GBP59.12 (EUR69.95), occupancy jumped 2.6 percent to 70.6 percent, and ADR increased 4.1 percent to GBP83.73 (EUR99.07). Baku also saw a rise in RevPAR, up 119.5 percent, along with a 74.9 percent boost in occupancy to 49.5 percent. ADR also grew 25.5 percent to AZN171.46 (EUR202.92).

t VisitScotland Expo 2017, VisitScotland had revealed that in 2016, through partnerships with airlines, it secured new air links worth over GBP46 million (EUR54.17 million) to the country’s economy. The tourism organisation collaborated with carriers, such as Delta Air Lines, British Airways and Air France, among others, to introduce 12 new routes to major global hubs, including Paris, New York City and Seoul. The services contributed an estimated total of 122,000 inbound visitors to Scotland over the 12-month period. Malcolm Roughead, CEO, VisitScotland, said, “VisitScotland is playing a major role in helping to bring new airlines to Scotland through innovative marketing partnerships on key routes, meaning that as a destination we are now better connected than ever.”

Each itinerary has been created exclusively for the liner and includes an evening event, two-night luxury hotel stay, and transfers, ahead of the voyage. Finnair Tests Face Recognition Software Finnair has invited 1,000 frequent flyers to take part in a test regarding the applicability of face recognition technology at Helsinki Airport.

T

he test period, implemented by Finavia as well, is in motion, having commenced on May 02 – 23. “Face recognition technology could offer possibilities for smoothing the departure process from the customer’s point of view, and eliminate the need for a boarding pass,” elaborated Sari Nevanlinna, head, ground experience and ancillary, Finnair. Customers taking part in the initiative will use a test application to send their portraits to the system, prior to check-in at a designated desk, where a customer service agent will then confirm the travel information and indicate the system’s success.

Air Dolomiti Adopts Amadeus e-Retail Technology

A

iming to make its website more engaging and enjoyable for customers, Air Dolomiti has recently implemented Amadeus e-Retail as well as Amadeus Airline Ancillary Services which is expected to go live in July. The system is expected to increase the airline’s merchandise revenue by enabling travellers to shop in one place, without needing to navigate back and forth to compare prices and dates. he European Union (EU), represented by the European Parliament, signed a long-awaited statute introducing visa liberalisation regime between Ukraine and, with the exception of the UK and Ireland, all EU member states along with Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein. Following the signing ceremony in Strasbourg and expected release of the historic decision in the official journal of the EU, the regime is due to be implemented in June. The new status is set to facilitate visa-free access for Ukrainians to nonEU countries and territories that already offer visa-free travel for EU citizens.

he Slovenian Tourism Board (STB) successfully concluded the annual Slovenian Incoming Workshop held in Ljubljana on May 11 – 13, which marked the event’s 20th anniversary. The tourism fair created a platform for some 220 Slovenian and 188 international tourism stakeholders to create new partnerships, and strengthen existing ones. Participants were able to attend familiarisation tours of local sites and products. Speaking ahead of the event, Maja Pak, director, STB, commented, “We are encouraged by the fact that for 20 years now there has been great interest among foreign tour operators in the tourism offering of green, active, healthy Slovenia, which is increasingly establishing a reputation as a boutique destination for outstanding five-star experiences.”

ased on the analysis of data provided by online hotel booking systems, TurStat has recently revealed that Lake Naroch, the largest lake in Belarus, holds the third place in the list of the top resort destinations in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) for Russian tourists. Furthermore, the analytics agency disclosed that Russian tourists spend an average of eight days at Lake Naroch, while average travel budget is estimated to be RUB3,700 (EUR 58.32) per day. Most Russian tourists visiting CIS resorts hail from Moscow and Saint Petersburg. The top five list also includes Kazakhstan’s Borovoye, Lake Issyk-Kul in Kyrgyzstan, along with Lankaran and Lake Sevenan, in Azerbaijan and Armenia, respectively.

Rotterdam Climbs Up ICCA List According to the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA), Rotterdam has risen five places to now hold 52nd position among the most popular congress cities worldwide, and 32nd in the European rankings.

aving hosted 49 international congresses in 2016, Rotterdam owes its increasing popularity as a congress hub due to the increase of well-equipped venues. Highlighting the economic value of such events, Karin van den Berg, general manager, Hilton Rotterdam, commented, “[…] The average expenditure of a congress visitor is higher than many other visitors and contributes to the economic development of the city.”

W

ith the total of 1,118 congresses attracting 854,000 delegates to Paris in 2016, the metropolis has reclaimed its leading position in the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA) 2016 ranking. From the number of the events held in the French capital, 196 congresses were recognised by ICCA during the evaluated period. Confirming the important role of the sector for Parisian tourism, a survey conducted by the Paris Convention and Visitors Bureau revealed an 11.4 percent year-onyear increase in organised events which attracted 12.2 percent more participants over 2015. Meanwhile, the health sector hosted the majority of the congresses, 37 percent of all events, followed by the technology and science industries, with 11 percent and eight percent, respectively.

The CCD Received Healthy Venues Accreditation

he Convention Centre Dublin (CCD) has been recently accredited under the World Obesity Federation’s Healthy Venue Awards programme, achieving silver status under its criteria. The venue meets a number of requirements to ensure a healthy environment for delegates and staff including a complete range of healthy menus, clear food content labelling and allergen information as well as spaces that can be used for fitness and relaxation. As part of World Obesity’s Action Initiative, the award seeks to stimulate and support practical actions that will help people achieve and maintain a healthy weight and reverse the global obesity crisis.

Berlin Among Top Five Convention Cities

W

ith a record number of international conventions held in 2016, Berlin has been ranked fourth among the top congress destinations in the world according to International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA). As disclosed by the convention office of visitBerlin, a total of 137,500 events took place in the capital in 2016, of which 176 were ICCA approved events. Especially popular for medical, scientific and information technology events, the city has held a top five position since 2004. “International associations from medicine and science value the efficiency and diversity of Berlin. Surge in Visitors to Latvia Riga

Latvia’s Central Statistical Bureau revealed that in the first quarter (Q1) of this year 397,400 visitors stayed in Latvian tourist accommodation establishments, marking an 8.6 percent increase compared to the corresponding period in 2016.

D

uring the quarter under review, the number of nights spent by guests rose 6.3 percent to reach 784, 900 while the average duration of stay was two nights. Most of the 264,300 foreign visitors, up 9.9 percent year-on-year, originated from Russia, Estonia, Lithuania, Germany and the UK. Furthermore, 133,200 Latvian residents were hosted, which is six percent more compared to Q1 in 2016, and the number of domestic nights spent jumped 5.5 percent to 255,000.

Promising Q1 for Slovenian Tourism

T

he Statistical Office of the Republic of Slovenia revealed that in the first quarter (Q1) of this year, Slovenia welcomed some 1.9 million overnight guests, a five percent increase over the same period in 2016. The majority of visitors chose to stay at a hotel, 72 percent of all overnight bookings. During the reviewed period, both domestic and international arrivals rose seven percent over 2016, while overnight stays increased four percent and five percent, respectively, bringing the destination closer to its target of exceeding 11 million overnight stays by the end of this year.

Minsk Presents Belarusian Festival

T

he Belarusians of the World festival is set to take place in Minsk on September 07 – 10, with the official inauguration to be held at Belarusian State Philharmonic Hall. With plans to host world-renowned musicians who were born in the country, representatives of Belarusian diaspora will give concerts in towns and district centres throughout the course of the festival’s duration. Meanwhile, an exhibition of Belarusian artists will also be held at National Art Museum of Belarus. Vasily Chernik, deputy culture minister, Belarus, disclosed that the event is expected to attract around 300 participants.

ccording to preliminary data provided by representatives of Bukovel, ski resort and as reported in the Ivano-Frankivsk regional state administration, the number of tourists to the Carpathian mountainous region of Ukraine increased from 1.5 million to two million this winter season. Worth noting, the flow of tourists to Verkhovyna, Kosivsky and Dolinsky districts had also significantly increased. The Carpathian Mountains span 1,500km across Central and Eastern Europe, stretching west from the Czech Republic to Eastern Romania.

UI Blue is expanding with the construction of a new hotel in Austria and the addition of further four properties across the Mediterranean. Under construction in the Austrian village of Schruns-Tschagguns which is ideal for skiing and hiking, TUI Blue Pulse Montafon will boast 149 rooms, and is scheduled for completion in summer 2019. Alongside this, existing TUI Hotels & Resorts addresses are being rebranded as TUI Blue. From the summer 2018 season, the portfolio will be enhanced to include TUI Blue Rocador in Mallorca, TUI Blue Falesia in Portugal, TUI Blue Palm Beach Palace in Djerba and TUI Blue Marmaris Imperial in Turkey.

candic Hotels has signed an agreement with Swedavia to operate a new hotel at Landvetter Airport in Gothenburg, due for completion in 2020. With construction to commence during 2018, the property is projected to boast 220 keys across seven floors with a restaurant, bar and fitness area, and about 10 conference rooms. he new passenger terminal at Franjo Tuđman Airport in Zagreb was opened with an inaugural Croatia Airlines flight to Dubrovnik. The first international passengers to use the facility flew with the carrier from the Zagreb hub to Brussels. The Croatian national airline plans to take advantage of the airport’s increased capacity by launching four new destinations from the gateway to Stockholm, Helsinki, Oslo and Bucharest, which will create extra 100,000 seats, expected to further boost passenger traffic to two million travellers.

Austrian Airlines Inaugurates 14th Embraer Aircraft Austrian Airlines’ new Embraer aircraft took off on its initial flight from Vienna to Stuttgart in May.

he 120-seat jet is the 14th aircraft of this type in the carrier’s fleet, worth an estimated USD52 million. Until the end of this year, the carrier will integrate a total of 17 Embraer aircrafts into its fleet, thus successively replacing its current 21 Fokker jets. The Embraer consumes approximately 18 percent less fuel per aircraft seat than the Fokker jets, therefore are more environmentally friendly. ufthansa has implemented the electronic flight folder (eFF) application on all its flights, largely replacing the paper briefing onboard, as an obligatory procedure on all routes. The programme is an in-house development, designed as part of the eFlightOps project using an agile approach. eFF is a software tool that clearly displays graphic briefing information to pilots via an ergonomic interface. “Following our test phase on long and short haul flights over the course of several months, we are now together on the home straight for paperless briefing,” enthused Heiko Freytag, group leader, cockpit information services, flight operations procedures and technologies division, Lufthansa, adding that the crew now receive all briefing documents via mobile radio or USB stick, with only the operational flight plan still being delivered on paper.

UNWTO Task Force Sets Security Priorities

T

he first Meeting of the High Level Task Force on Tourism and Security organised by the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) was held in Madrid on May 10 to debate key areas related to security in tourism. Representatives of UNWTO member states, United Nations organisations and private sector entities convened and set the primary issues to focus on, such as the integration of national and tourism security, support of the sector in setting crisis management plans, travel advisories, seamless travel procedures including visa policies and crisis communication. Specific working groups will be responsible for addressing these areas and developing recommendations and guidelines to be presented at the UNWTO General Assembly.

World Routes and Travel Foundation Join Forces

W

orld Routes of UBM and The Travel Foundation have teamed-up to deliver World Routes 2017, a sustainable tourism platform set to take place in Barcelona on September 23 – 26. Under the theme Growing the Value of Tourism, the event is expected to bring together 3,000 delegates from 300 airlines, 700 airports and 130 tourism authorities to engage in dialogues shaping the tourism industry and its opportunities in terms of sustainability. As the forum’s official charity partner, the foundation will curate a series of presentations and live content.

n conjunction with two specialised events publications, IMEX Group launched a survey titled Women in the Events Industry – equal partners or assistants? The research aimed to establish where the international events industry stands in terms of equality, career opportunities and work-life balance. Within three weeks, 3,059 women from across the world opened the link to the survey, with almost one third providing answers. The results revealed that 66 percent of women in the events sector enjoy being part of the industry. However, just three out of 10 women said they felt equal in terms of salary and six in 10 women do not believe they have the same career prospects as their male counterparts.

Minsk Hosted Muay Thai Finals

elarusian Telegraph Agency announced that Belarusian athletes competed in 14 final bouts of the World Muay Thai Championships in Minsk, following the preliminary round which took place at Minsk Sports Palace. Yelena Leshkevich, Lyudmila Chislova, Diana Yemelyanova, Maksim Petkevich, Roman Dovnar, Dmitry Filippov, Karen Tumasyan, and Vladislav Shedko were among the athletes competing at the event held on May 03 – 12. The finals also featured Dmitry Varets, Dmitry Valent, Denis Goncherenok. Part of the Belarusian national team leaders, Andrei Kulebin were unable to participate due to an injury, while Vitaly Gurkov was defeated by Portugal’s Diogo Calado.
