The report states that countries with more open and sustainable tourism sectors have higher levels of peace. In addition, growth in sustainability can lead to improvements in the functioning of governments as the entities respond to demand and create a welcoming environment for further expansion, ultimately increasing future harmony. David Scowsill, president, WTTC, said, “This research is compelling evidence of why governments should continue to focus on tourism development for the good of their people, and make policy decisions that balance the safety of their citizens with the continued facilitation of travel for business and leisure purposes.”

ANA MLADENOVIC WRITES
“E
dinburgh is a small city with big ideas,” noted Kim Kjaerside, sales manager, meetings, events and leisure, Apex Hotels, highlighting that the destination has introduced some of the world’s leading doctors, scientists, lawyers, engineers, architects and philosophers at its world-class universities. Throwing the spotlight on academic credentials, Lesley Williams, head of business tourism, Convention Edinburgh, revealed that as home to four leading universities, Edinburgh has a global reputation as a centre of excellence in life sciences and new technologies. “Its mass appeal is reflected in the diversity of recent and upcoming events, including February’s International Conference on Ocean Energy, this summer’s SPIE Astronomical Telescopes + Instrumentation, and the European Society for Clinical Cell Analysis in October,” Williams listed. The Scottish city’s scientific prowess also helped to secure a winning bid for an influential paediatric world congress for 2021, which is expected to attract 800 delegates and inject over GBP1.3 million (EUR1.65 million) into the local economy. The fact that Edinburgh’s reputation is attracting many UK and international medical industry associations was also confirmed by Marshall Dallas, CEO, Edinburgh International Conference Centre (EICC), from the host venue of the prestigious event. “That reputation, built up through the hard work of the team here, continues to pay dividends and we are delighted that [the congress] will take place at the EICC to the great benefit of the local economy,” he expressed.
AN EVENT ORGANISER’S DREAM, EDINBURGH IS MORE THAN JUST SCENIC, AS IT IS IMMERSED IN HISTORY AND GRACED WITH CONVENIENT INFRASTRUCTURE. ITS ADMIRABLE ACADEMIC AND RESEARCH COMMUNITY MAKES IT IDEAL FOR ASSOCIATION AND SCIENTIFIC MEETINGS, MUCH TO THE BENEFIT OF THE LOCAL ECONOMY.

The capital’s growing appeal for event organisers from across the world has been underlined by Williams, who said that 2015 was the best year on record for business tourism. “[In 2015] we confirmed 206 new future events for Edinburgh, which will be attended by over 74,000 delegates and generate GBP94.3 million (EUR119.5 million) for the local economy. That is an increase of almost 10,000 more delegates and GBP3 million (EUR3.8 million) economic impact on [2015’s] results,” she explained. In light of such impressive MICE credentials, one cannot help but ask what makes the city such a popular choice for events. First and foremost, it is a diverse collection of venues. “Event organisers can choose from majestic to creative, large, purpose-built conference facilities, luxury castles, stately homes, art galleries and museums, underground caves, whisky vaults and even a royal yacht,” Williams enthused. She also mentioned several venue and accommodation

refurbishments and major building developments that are currently underway, including at New Waverly, St James Quarter and Haymarket, all of which will, according to her, enhance the city’s MICE offerings in the years to come. In addition, deep-rooted culture and admirable history completes all types of events, may that be a small meeting, a team away day, world-class dinners or larger conventions, Kjaerside explained. And finally, accessibility. “Edinburgh is a very accessible city and easily walkable to most attractions, our quality shops and many green spaces,” continued Kjaerside. “The airport is only 12km from the city centre, with 140 routes from Europe, North America and the Middle East, and good connections to the rest of the world, making it easy for delegates to travel here.” Yet, what really gives the city a competitive edge, propelling it to the very top when it comes to the global MICE scene, is its membership of BestCities, a global alliance of 11 of the world’s leading hubs. “As a BestCities member, Edinburgh not only adheres to a strict set of high quality standards, we also work closely together to ensure our clients receive wellinformed strategic guidance and practical support,” explained Williams. “This not only enables us to help clients with things like delegate boosting or sourcing wellknown speakers, we work with our clients to deliver lasting legacies, stretching far beyond the traditional remit of a convention bureau.”

In mid-April the experts were hosted in Switzerland, where they shared their expertise at SportAccord Convention. “These invitations to present to some of the leading figures within the global sporting events sector about what we have learned as well as the skills and knowledge we now possess, are a huge endorsement of the progress made by all parties within Scotland’s events industry,” boasted Bush. The expertise and experience of VisitScotland, and even VisitBritain, is an important factor in Convention Edinburgh’s drive to further promote the city. To reach its target audiences and effectively market the city, the organisation also attends flagship trade events such as the IMEX platforms in the US and Frankfurt and The Meeting Show in London, cooperates with BestCities and have campaigns such as the US-focussed This is Conferencing. Reflecting on the future prospects of the city’s MICE scene, Williams confidently enthused, “Exciting times lie ahead.”

EMRE ISMAILOGLU GENERAL MANAGER, DUBAI, TURKISH AIRLINES
EUROPE IS OF PARAMOUNT IMPORTANCE TO TURKISH AIRLINES’ OPERATIONS AND IS IMPERATIVE TO THE CARRIER’S FUTURE GROWTH, AS EMRE ISMAILOGLU, GENERAL MANAGER, DUBAI, TURKISH AIRLINES, EXPLAINS.
TRAVEL TRADE EUROPE: How important is the European market and the overall European network to the airline? EMRE ISMAILOGLU: The European market is arguably the most important for our airline. Whilst there is a huge number of passengers that already fly with us, we feel that the market still has a lot of potential. This is why we will continue to add more planes to our fleet and add routes as well. Our network in Europe today is very large and includes 14 destinations in Germany, 10 destinations in Russia, 10 destinations in Italy, six destinations in France, six destinations in Spain, and recently, we have added flights to Ukraine, Croatia and Slovakia. We have also [started] direct flights to Dubrovnik, which is the second destination we serve in Croatia and is being added to the 285 destinations provided worldwide by Turkish Airlines, consisting of 236 international and 49 domestic [routes]. TRAVEL TRADE EUROPE: What are the airline’s immediate plans for further expansion between Istanbul and Europe?
EMRE ISMAILOGLU: Our plans are to add to both our total number of planes and destinations so as to serve the maximum possible countries in Europe. We always look to tap into new markets, so in addition to flying to all the popular European destinations, we have also penetrated thinner European markets, and will continue to grow in many of the continent’s second- and third-tier markets which are not wellserved with larger aircraft. These are markets such as Edinburgh, Liverpool, Billund and Genoa. TRAVEL TRADE EUROPE: How does Turkish Airlines stay ahead of other airlines operating on the continent? EMRE ISMAILOGLU: Our goal is to maintain our image as one of the best customer-oriented airlines in the world. Offering our passengers the highest standard of services with genuine Turkish hospitality and catering, is paramount to us. Our direct relationship with our passengers is one of the key reasons for our success and growth in the region, and we believe that the best way to build on our momentum is by gaining the loyalty and trust of our customers who are very dear to us.
TRAVEL TRADE EUROPE: Tell us about Turkish Airline’s European network from Istanbul. EMRE ISMAILOGLU: […] We have a very high focus on this region and have always received the greatest overall results in terms of the passenger numbers on our flights. Our top countries in terms of flights offered are Germany, Russia, Italy, France and Spain with Germany being the best in terms of connections offered. We expect this number to continue increasing as we are committed to adding more aircraft and supplying our customers with what they need, wherever they are in the region. 25 MAY 2016
