European hoteliers reported mostly negative results for August as occupancy fell 1.5 percentage points to 75.8 percent and average daily rate (ADR) stood at EUR115.94, leading to a 1.5 percent drop in RevPAR to EUR87.88.

O

n the other hand, demand in Russia remained high with occupancy rising 6.7 percent to 70.6 percent and ADR showing a double-digit growth, resulting in a 24.3 percent surge in RevPAR. In fact, the absolute occupancy level proved to be the highest in the country since September 2011, mostly driven by a boost in domestic travel. Likewise, Malta witnessed improvements in each of the three metrics with RevPAR soaring to the highest level for any month on record in the destination. Despite a slight drop in occupancy, a rise in ADR helped Barcelona achieve a 9.4 percent increase in RevPAR, Milan and Istanbul, however, both experienced notable declines in figures.

erevan played host to the 38th plenary session of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO)’s affiliate members, in October. The programme featured debates on key issues shaping the organisation’s 2017 action plan, including the future of tourism, cultural and city segments as well as the international year of sustainable tourism for development initiative. During the meeting, affiliate members discussed their role, goals, new projects, challenges and expectations in the context of public-private collaboration and global tourism. “Armenia is one of many examples of great potential in tourism; it holds extraordinary natural assets and unique cultural diversity and traditions, and this immense potential has started to translate into strong tourism results,” commented Taleb Rifai, secretary general, UNWTO.

U

According to statistics released by the Turkish government, in the first half of this year Ukraine was listed sixth in terms of the number of arrivals with nearly 500,000 Ukrainians travelling to the country, representing the largest increase over 2015. Given the recent surge in demand, Ukraine is set to offset the reduction in the volume of Russian tourists. Likewise, by country of origin, Ukraine proved to be the sixth largest segment for Israel, partly due to the country’s recent endeavours to boost the number of visitors, with a special focus on attracting tourists to Eliat.

ELLEN PETTY WRITES

Momentum “T IN RECENT YEARS, ZAGREB HAS CONSISTENTLY BEEN RISING UP THE RANKS AS ONE OF EUROPE’S TOP MICE DESTINATIONS. WITH INCREASING FLIGHTS AND A NEW AIRPORT TERMINAL CURRENTLY UNDER CONSTRUCTION, THE CROATIAN CAPITAL IS LOOKING TO REMAIN FIRMLY PLACED ON THE CONTINENT’S MICE MAP.

he MICE sector is one of the most important segments in the tourism industry in Zagreb,” enthused Kristian Sustar, board member, HUP-Zagreb Hotel Group, reporting a 30 percent surge in MICE demand at the company’s properties for the first six months of the year. “The increase is definitely linked to a few citywide events, however, most of the growth is directly related to the international conferences held at our hotels,” explained Sustar. Whilst describing the sector’s constant expansion in recent years, Mâra VîtolsHrgetiã, director, Forum Zagreb, noted a year-on-year rise of 15 percent in events in the first half of the year, attributing the success to the continuous hard work of Zagreb Tourism Board. Speaking of the importance of conference travellers for city centre properties, Sustar said, “The consumption per guest is much higher compared to a leisure group. The rise of MICE events has positively affected Zagreb’s tourism; there are many more professional congress organisers present with different approaches and the number of various services and tourism offerings are booming – not only for MICE events and guests but for all travellers visiting Zagreb.” EXHIBITING CONVENIENCE “Croatia becoming a member of the European Union (EU) was most certainly a trigger that placed Zagreb on the international MICE map,” observed Sustar, providing an explanation for the sector’s growth following the EU decision in 2013. Zlatan Muftic, director, Zagreb Convention Bureau, highlighted that the compactness of the capital makes it an ideal destination for events, offering convenience as well as excellent value for money for organisers and delegates. Throwing the spotlight on the city’s enhanced accessibility, Tanja Pilipovic, commercial and marketing, Zagreb International Airport Franjo Tuđman, also underscored safety as a key contributor to the Croation hotspot’s appeal. While these practicalities are advantageous, it is the hospitality of locals and the knowledge of industry experts that repeat-

edly dras event organisers to the city, explained Pilipovic. “MICE tourism in Zagreb continually gathers top professionals within the tourism sector [...],” she confirmed. This view was corroborated by Sustar who said, “Every property [managed by HUP-Zagreb Hotel Group] is proud of their professional and experienced MICE team that are here to take care of every detail and make sure everything is perfectly executed.” The underlying themes of ease and convenience are underpinned by Zagreb Convention Bureau’s website which suggests major convention facilities and service providers in the city. However, it is not these factors alone which make Zagreb stand out from its competitors, but its distinct and memorable event spaces. “Special venues such as museums, theatres, archives or historic halls are working in synergy [and] are becoming more important as part of the overall Zagreb MICE tourism segment offer,” enthused Pilipovic. While mentioning that a bigger conference centre could possibly attract even larger programmes, Sustar confirmed, “Zagreb has a number of unique venues that are great for special events, like Croatian State Archives and Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb.” WELL-CONNECTED While the city has many unexploited gems, its connectivity is undeniably at the core of the growing industry, as Muftic pinpointed. “Zagreb is a very accessible city from all major European cities as well as from overseas through international hubs. Zagreb International Airport is only 25 minutes from the city centre and major hotels,” highlighted Muftic. Sustar echoed this point, adding, “Zagreb is a new, fresh destination, still undiscovered, and yet very well connected [...].” For the first six months of the year, Yavuz Aytis, manager, route development, Zagreb International Airport Franjo Tuđman, reported a six percent increase in passenger traffic due to new routes, increased frequencies and aircraft upgauge, not just within Europe but to Middle Eastern destinations, such as Dubai, as well. As Boris Kolka, director of sales and marketing, Croatia Airlines, explained, so far this year, the country’s national carrier added four new international routes to its network while also increasing capacity on three additional itineraries, and actively promoting all segments of the sector, including MICE. As the official airline of congresses, conferences and other events, Croatia Airlines aims to make corporate travel easier, simpler and more cost-effective through the provision of discounts offered to participants and products designed for the segment, such as Star Alliance Conventions Plus and Meeting Plus, revealed Kolka. With Zagreb International Airport Franjo Tuđman’s new EUR243 million passenger terminal scheduled to open in March 2017 and the country’s links across the continent and beyond growing, as Pilipovic underscored, Zagreb’s future looks promising.  25 OCTOBER 2016

WTM London

This year’s sessions focus on key elements that make successful digital and social media campaigns, drawing on a variety of case studies, with insight from some of the best digital influencers, bloggers and marketers. And of course, it would not be social media if we did not get the audience involved, so there will be plenty of time for views and questions from the floor at the end of the sessions. The first blogging session, Mobile and Live Social Media, on Monday will look at the impact of the major players in the live social media arena and experts will discuss the merits of Snapchat, Facebook, Periscope and YouTube […]. YouTube and the Continuing Rise of Video looks at how bloggers and brands can jump start their own video channel and how brands and marketers can effectively work with YouTubers and video creators. […] Wednesday, November 09 is the day that 100 of the world’s leading bloggers meet exhibitors and their public relations representatives to discuss ways to increase media exposure. TRAVEL TRADE EUROPE: What advice would you give to exhibitors and visitors looking to make the most of their time at the upcoming WTM London 2016? SIMON PRESS: Exhibiting at WTM London provides organisations with a unique opportunity to meet, network, negotiate and conduct business with more than 50,000 international travel professionals, from over 38 sectors of the travel industry. 5,500 ATTENDEES AT GATWICKSPONSORED PUSH/RUN Parallel London push/run

G

atwick Airport partnered with Parallel London to sponsor what was hailed as the world’s first fully inclusive push/run. More than 5,500 people attended the family festival that celebrated diversity and accessibility. Over 3,000 individuals of all ages and abilities took part in races of 10km, five kilometres, one kilometre or 100m. As Alison Addy, head of community engagement, Gatwick Airport, said, “Our ambition is to become one of the world’s most accessible airports by making air travel accessible and manageable for those with reduced mobility and hidden disabilities so it was great to be a part of such an exciting event.” One of the airfield’s initiatives is a hidden disability lanyard for passengers who may require additional support when travelling.

A

irport Council International (ACI) has reviewed its Airport Carbon Accreditation programme, finding that during the 12month period ending in June, certified hubs collectively reduced carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by 206,090 tonnes. Now in its seventh year, the initiative recognises airfields at four stages of carbon management, namely mapping, reduction, optimisation and neutrality. Commenting on the scheme’s success, Angela Gittens, director general, ACI World, said, “The momentum keeps building. […] We now have 170 airports in the programme and over 36 percent of global air passenger traffic – well over two billion passengers – now travel through airports certified at one of the four levels of the programme.”

BA CELEBRATES BRITISH ARTISTS

Sandcastle is a life-size sandcastle made of concrete and then industrially chromed in silver, adding a layer of luxury to a playful object. First class passengers will also be able to view the artwork in Concorde Room at Heathrow Airport’s Terminal 5 over a period of four months. The design edition of the quarterly publication will showcase British artists to celebrate expertise and creativity.

A VISITSCOTLAND TAPS INTO ANCESTRAL TOURISM

head of Scotland’s Year of History, Heritage and Archaeology 2017, VisitScotland has revamped its Ancestral Welcome Scheme, a project initially launched in 2006 in partnership with Scottish Ancestral Tourism Group. Ancestral tourism is a key market in the country, representing an estimated 213,000 visits per annum and contributing approximately GBP101 million (EUR114 million) to the national economy. Those travelling for genealogy purposes tend to stay longer and spend significantly more than the average guest. The initiative invites frontline tourism businesses and genealogy services to access a toolkit of knowledge to assist travellers in unearthing their Scottish roots. More than 150 local organisations have already signed up.
