Continuously adapting to the changes of society, the definition of luxury is becoming highly subjective and constantly evolving. The word itself is overused and often ambiguous. With authenticity becoming a rare commodity around the world, experiencing destinations in, inspirational and unprecedented ways where affluent travellers also fuel their emotional and intellectual needs, is the essence of true luxury travel. Regardless of location, it is the warm sincere and anticipatory service that differentiates a truly opulet travel experience. With April being one of the most inspirational months for little escapes, Travel Trade Luxury goes above and beyond expectations to meet Turkey’s most hospitable resorts and finest congress centres while also introducing Brunei’s championship-quality golf courses.

While spring invites skiers to catch the last sparkling snow in prestigious Alpine resorts, the imperial cities of Austria boast a rich year-round menu of luxury attractions and off-the-slope activities. The history and art, which the icons as Wolfgang A. Mozart, Johann Strauss and Sigmund Freud too could not resist; scenic Danube river; hot water spas; five-star dining and exceptional services, Austria calls for a pampering long weekend or a stylish city break in every season.

with the potential to absorb much more. Today, the Meetings, Incentives, conferences and events (MICE) segment is receiving growing attention both from the government as well as from industry professionals enhancing the year-round variability of the tourism sector. MAJOR EXPO CENTRES “Straddling Asia and Europe, Istanbul is a key hub which guarantees easy access and transport, while bringing together the colours and cultures from across the world in a pot of immerse history and cultural heritage,” said Pervin Yalazan, general manager, Istanbul Congress Center (ICC). Incepted in 2009, ICC offers a wide range of amenities in the field of MICE, including sound, image, light and catering services. In 2016, the centre hosted some of the world’s most significant events including the World Energy Congress, which welcomed 10,000 delegates, and the UNESCO World Heritage Congress, to name a few. While Istanbul remains the focal point for domestic political congresses, Antalya is becoming a centre for commercial MICE activities. This has been confirmed by Murat Alpman, group sales coordinator, Rixos Hotels, Turkey who stated, “Antalya is becoming a growing MICE destination by welcoming worldwide pharmaceutical congresses, G20, international sport events and exhibitions.” PLANTING THE SEEDS OF GROWTH MoCT has played an increasingly proactive role in the sector’s development. In 2007, the entity launched its Tourism Strategy 2023, setting the targets for achievement before its 2023 centenary. According to the plan, the country aims to attract 50 million visitors annually, to become the fifth largest tourist destination worldwide and generate USD50 billion in annual revenue. In addition, the World Travel and Tourism Council projects that by 2023, the country will attract 50.77 million visitors annually. The Turkish Tourism Investors Association gave an even brighter forecast, predicting that the country will reach 60 million visitor arrivals by 2023.

Rixos Premium Belek

Designed to contribute to the 2023 vision, a series of big projects including highways, bridges, canals and power plants have been scheduled. Along with every other segment, MICE activities are expected to expand even further and in addition, the opening of the new Istanbul Airport. Scheduled to be completed in 2028, the new airport will be one of the world's largest transportation hubs, featuring a modern design, and including state of the art runways, terminals, air traffic control towers, and technology, as well as top security. INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY AND SERVICE STANDARDS One of the most important challenges posed by the rapid growth of MICE tourism worldwide, is the necessity to maintain high service standards in the context of intense competition. Business travellers these days expect luxury, high quality service at all times. “In a globally competitive environment, the secret of running a successful MICE operation is a sustainable service approach, adaptation to evolving technologies, stability of service quality and trust,” emphasised, Yalazan. Further adding, and highlighting the importance of information technology, Bulmup commented, “People nowadays are increasingly global, mobile, visual and social and attendees want more from an event than just tables and chairs.” JW Marriott International has launched several innovative solutions

exclusively for its MICE sector. JW Event Concierge is a meeting service application which places meeting management at the fingertips of meeting planners. The application, which is available in 20 languages, provides consistent customer service through which multiple planners can request, review and share responses to ensure the success of any event. Turkey’s diverse visitor offerings have seen its popularity grow rapidly over the past few years. Acting as an invaluable bridge between east and west, Europe and the Middle East, between cultures and groups, with its cosmopolitan society and unprecedented hospitality, the country has a lot to offer discerning business travellers. 

INTERVIEW

INTERVIEW WITH

Ross Evans GROUP OPERATIONS DIRECTOR, HEMINGWAYS COLLECTION

As one of the leading safari destinations, Kenya offers and abundance of wildlife and, as Ross Evans, group operations director, Hemingways Collection, explains, has adapted to meet the needs of affluent holidaymakers.

Travel Trade Luxury: In 2015, the number of visitors from traditional markets such as the UK, the US and Italy declined, did this trend continue in 2016? Ross Evans: Certainly visitor numbers in general in Kenya were down in 2015 and we were affected particularly at our coastal property and our camp in the Masai Mara. [As for 2016, it was] a more positive year and Hemingways Nairobi has achieved record months in July, August and September mostly due to leisure travellers visiting Kenya on safari. We have seen strong demand from traditional markets such as the US and Europe however also increasing numbers of guests from South America and particularly Asia. Affluent guests tend to arrive from all over the world but for safaris the US is the biggest high end market. The coast of Kenya is not very popular with that market at the moment and is better known by the European market. We are very positive about prospects for [this year] with Kenya seemingly back on the map as a top destination in Africa. We have a very strong pipeline of bookings for Hemingways Nairobi and we were very pleased to see Kenya topping the Hot 10 list of global destinations at Virtuoso Travel Week in August [2016]. Travel Trade Luxury: What is it that attracts affluent travellers to Kenya?

32

Ross Evans: Kenya stands out as a luxury safari destination due to the quality and quantity of wildlife on show. [...] Kenya being the home of the safari also adds to the attraction as well as the wonderful Kenyan people that host international travellers with such warmth in all sectors. [...] Many of these camps and lodges are standalone properties which are often family run, so there is an individuality to them which appeals to regular high-end travellers. In terms of unique offerings, the number and size of Kenya’s national parks offers travellers an incredibly varied safari experience and often visitors may experience two or three different parks in one itinerary. The temperate weather in Kenya, particularly in the Masai Mara, allows guests to go on game drives throughout the day. [...] I think the third unique factor is such with many camps and lodges being actively engaged in conservation efforts to protect wildlife and balance the needs of local communities. [...] Many people have limited time and need the most efficient transport routes to get to and from their destinations. The new route for people to transfer from the Masai Mara to the Serengeti and vice versa is an example of where better transport links can add significant value to travellers. I think the most important feature, however, is customisation, affluent travellers are not interested in run of the mill itineraries but are looking for something tailor made for them. This extends to

how they are hosted in camps and lodges, they want a bespoke service where they can do what they want, when they want. [...] Travel Trade Luxury: What your strategy in supporting the growth of the luxury segment? Ross Evans: First and foremost, we are making sure our properties are truly five-star. Hemingways Nairobi opened in 2013 and is now well-established as the premium luxury boutique hotel in East Africa. [...] We are currently redeveloping our coastal property, Hemingways Watamu, to bring it up to the same standards and level of service as our hotel in Nairobi. Once completed, it will be the best property on the Kenyan coast and will compete with luxury brands in Zanzibar, Mauritius and the Seychelles. [...] We are also investing in upgrading our camp in Mara which is located within Naboisho Conservancy which was voted Overall Winner at the 2016 African Responsible Tourism Awards. From a promotion standpoint we are actively engaged in international travel trade shows – [including] representation at We are Africa and Pure – and we are doing sales trips to the US, the UK and China. In fact, we partnered with two other luxury Kenyan properties, Angama Mara and Segera Retreat, for a sales trip to the US in June where we actively promoted Kenya as a luxury destination.
