UNTAMED POTENTIAL Blessed with bountiful wildlife, six UNESCO World Heritage Sites and some of the world’s most magnificent beaches, Tanzania is a gem well-known among those who seek adventure and excitement in unadulterated surroundings.

ANA MLADENOVIC WRITES

“A

s one of the most popular countries in Africa and the world, Tanzania has it all,” enthused Lluc Morell, sales manager, Europe, Meliá Zanzibar, highlighting the stunning Serengeti National Park, the great wildebeest migration and the Ngorongoro Crater in the north of the country as some of the must-see spots. In addition, he also listed the outstanding safari options and the luxury beach extension at Meliá Zanzibar among Tanzania’s visitor favourites.

6

The diversity of the destination was also praised by Rosemary Mugambi, group sales manager, Serena Hotels, who noted that while first-time travellers are normally exploring attractions they have heard of, returning guests have the option to enjoy additional offerings. “One of the new and unique discoveries now is the south – the Selous, Africa’s largest game reserve with an incredible wildlife and different ecological systems, including riverine grasslands, tropical woodlands and lake areas,” she elucidated.

AUGUST 2016

DISCOVER: TANZANIA AFRICA & INDIAN OCEAN TRAVEL TRADE LUXURY

Mugambi also highlighted the significant share of those visiting the destination for wildlife safaris – still the favorite reason for trips to Tanzania, especially among more mature clients – but she also pointed to a shift in demand for more adventure and varied activities. “Serena Hotels, therefore, continues to improve the client experience […] and now has fun activities, such as aerobics, jogging, painting, archery and, […] for adventurous [visitors], there are walks, hikes [and] canoeing,” she revealed. Yet, despite its rich natural attractions, Tanzania’s tourism sector is staggering, with hotel occupancy in January for instance, standing at 25.1 percent. According to figures released by the National Bureau of Statistics, during the month under review international visitors accounted for 43.9 percent of the total. The situation was similar throughout 2015, with August 2015 registering the highest occupancy level of the year at 34.5 percent. In light of the fact that the industry represents a significant portion of the national GDP – as much as 14 percent in 2014, according to the World Travel & Tourism Council – propelling demand is a top a priority for the country. To boost interest, Tanzania Tourist Board (TTB) has just unveiled a new online destination tourism portal which, thanks to an online payment function, brings about a new level of convenience for travellers. “Our portal will serve as a vehicle for tourism information dissemination since it contains much information on Tanzania as a unique destination in the world, and one can even make online payments for the service he or she wants,” explained Philip Chitaunga, acting director of marketing, TTB. As he further noted, the enhancement is set to benefit local tourism stakeholders, especially small and medium enterprises located in rural areas, as they will be able to do business directly with their clients, thus, decreasing their dependency on partner agencies abroad. The upgraded website is accompanied by a new mobile application, which is also planned to facilitate mobile payments in the near future. “The official app, Tanzania Tourism, the same as the portal, contains detailed information on various tourist destinations in Tanzania. It gives an overview of what Tanzania can offer as a unique tourist destination in Africa, things to do, accommodation and how to plan your trip,” added Chitaunga. Apart from several prominent African exhibitions, the Tanzanian tourism sector was also heavily represented at this year’s ITB Berlin, with a total of 90 private and public companies, 59 of which exhibited under the TTB stand, according to Geofrey Meena, marketing manager, TTB. Industry stakeholders seem to be active both online as well as offline. With the affluent traveller in mind, Mugambi assured that the quality of hospitality services and products in Tanzania are comparable, if not even of higher quality in some cases, to those in other African destinations, especially in southern Africa. “[This is] thanks to pioneering hospitality players like Serena Hotels that ventured into Tanzania in the 1990s by establishing its presence in the northern circuit and Zanzibar and, thus, contributed to the development of the industry and improvement of services,” she boasted. In terms of the guest profile of the country’s top-tier properties, Morell listed couples and honeymooners, who either choose the hotel for a luxury beach holiday or as part of a joint safari experience across African countries.

AUGUST 2016

Morell shared the experience of Meliá Zanzibar, “We are promoting Meliá Zanzibar by launching specials with our partners who promote our property with marketing campaigns and [via] brochures.” Yet, while marketing is likely to attract new guests, ensuring their return is an entirely different task; one that Serena Hotels handles with utmost care. “Whilst we have the advantage of being present in all the key locations, including in Arusha, Manyara, Ngorongoro and in Serengeti, as well as Zanzibar and the Selous, one of our key strengths is the human resource element. The company invests heavily in training [...] and this has duly paid off,” said Mugambi. 

ADVENTURE OF A LIFETIME Stretching from the US in the south to the Arctic Circle in the north, Canada is filled with vibrant cities and endless wild terrain, ideal for travellers in search of unique adventures and exploration, especially for those who have the means to discover the country to its full capacity in style.

PAULINE SHAHABIAN WRITES

“M

ore and more affluent consumers are looking beyond material trappings, seeking adventurous experiential travel experiences, and Canada is in a great position to capitalise on this,” posited Charlotte Wells, product manager, US and Canada, Abercrombie & Kent, who noted that Canadian itineraries are expected to continue to grow in popularity over the coming years as the country is perceived all around the world as a safe and experience-led destination .

18

“Canada is diverse in land, culture and people,” stated Marc Télio, president, Entrée Canada. “One can explore spectacular settings in the wilderness, countless species of wildlife, including whales, bears and birds, and an amazing collection of outdoor adventures. I consider Canada as a huge playground for those who want to be outdoors and appreciate some of the most beautiful and pristine wilderness on Earth.” “Canada’s luxury adventure [and] exploration is extremely important to [the

country’s] overall tourism industry,” attested Daniel Newberry, director of sales and marketing, The Ritz-Carlton, Toronto. “Affluent customers crave adventure and exploration that provide unique and authentic experiences.” UNEARTHING EXTRAVAGANCE Indeed, Canada boasts an array of adventurous trails and attractions for the wild-at-heart tourist in search of unique and off-the-beaten-path experiences, and it is the swift access to such experiences that defines true luxury. “Travellers seeking adventure and exploration often seek the road less travelled. Stepping away from a conventional itinerary, they spend more time investigating authentic experiences and connecting with not just the spectacular landscapes on a more granular level, but with the history and local people to give them a fuller sense of accomplishment when travelling,” commented Wells. In agreement, Télio continued, “In my opinion, luxury travellers with an elevated budget can buy themselves access to remote places, that are often not available on a run-of-the-mill itinerary. […] These are popular because most of Canada is in fact remote wilderness, so some of the best spots need [special] access.” Canadian hoteliers have swiftly caught on to the luxury adventure travel trend and have embraced it by weaving it into their overall offering. Lloyd Daser, general manager, Pan Pacific Whistler Village Centre, stated, “Adventurers who have high expectations for themselves, typically have high expectations for their service providers as well. So, it makes sense that adventure junkies who challenge themselves for pleasure would be the same people who appreciate individuals and companies who go above and beyond for their clients.” As Daser noted, Whistler, British Columbia is blessed with great outdoor and natural attractions, and is positioned as one of the world’s leading destinations for luxury adventure travel.

AUGUST 2016

Similarly, Katia Piccolino, director of public relations and sponsorships, The Ritz-Carlton Montreal, commented that the luxury hotel is very popular among tourists visiting the country for opulent adventures, as Montreal shimmers with history, art and entertainment, and a romantic French heritage that makes it Canada’s European city. “Montreal offers experiences to suit every visitor’s interest, and an exciting agenda can be arranged through our luxury hotel in downtown Montreal thanks to our concierge team,” Piccolino highlighted. As a concluding remark, Ross Meredith, general manager, Westin Ottawa, noted, “[Canada is] blessed with natural beauty and diverse choices, [ranging] from the spectacular rocky mountains and the wonders of the prairies to the dynamic cities and the picturesque Maritimes. Package this up in a safe and clean environment and we are spoiled with a world-class country to visit.” 

According to Hakan Petek, general manager, Jumeirah Messilah Beach Hotel & Spa, what truly distinguishes Kuwait from other regional destinations is its rich culture and traditions that transpierce all aspects of life and are evident in the high proportion of locals in Kuwait City and across the country. As Zameer Seahabdeen, manager, operations, Al Mulla Travel Bureau, pinpointed, although Kuwait might not be the first destination that springs to mind when thinking of Middle Eastern tourist hotspots, yet, in terms of luxury offerings, the oil-rich country has craved itself a niche in the market.

When it comes to entertainment and activities, Kuwait still lags behind its fastdeveloping regional peers, including Qatar, Oman, Bahrain, and of course the UAE, admitted Seahabdeen, adding that nevertheless the destination boasts several attractions, such as high-end shopping malls and beaches.

traveller that seeks a more curated experience and tailored stay,” underlined Petek, further revealing that in order to maximise guest satisfaction and loyalty, the management records the preferences of high-end customers, ensuring that all elements are prepared to the highest possible level of perfection for their next stay.

DEAL BREAKERS In fact, at Symphony Style Hotel – which following its rebranding in 2014, became one of the first members of the Quorvus Collection, a new generation of expertly curated luxury properties – high-end guests make up around 70 percent of business, mirroring the country’s significance both regionally as well as internationally. “It is also the segment that has the largest average spend per night, so it is vitally important that as hoteliers, we get every detail right,” stressed Schuler, noting how these (mostly) business travellers have become accustomed to top quality services and high attention to detail, thus, they demand refined products

“From the professional welcome by our highly-trained staff to gourmet meals in our varied restaurants, we strive to focus on providing experiences that are exclusive to this region and offer guests the luxury of choice,” explained Petek, adding that as part of its drive to ensure more unique experiences in line with the ever-evolving preferences and interests of guests, the hotel teamed up with local vehicle providers to offer environmentally friendly transport options – a small yet thoughtful touch. Further elevating the destination’s high-end profile, Four Seasons Hotels & Resorts is gearing up to make its foray into Kuwait with the launch of its first project in the country in February 2017. and the best of everything. “Many of our corporate accounts are regular guests to the hotel and our teams know them personally, having spent time to get to know them and their preferences so that we can offer a true home away from home experience,” highlighted Schuler. The clientele booking accommodation in Kuwait is indeed increasingly discerning, concurred Petek, further revealing that at Jumeirah Messilah Beach Hotel & Spa for example, the luxury segment is not restricted to busy CEOs and corporate travellers. “We are also frequented by a considerable number of the region’s royal families and celebrities. On a daily basis, we have some 25 – 30 VIPs staying with us,” divulged Petek. In light of the high profile of travellers heading to Kuwait, it comes as no surprise that guests are now seeking unique experimental holidays with a rising demand for authentic and engaging encounters and activities, asserted Petek. “With the ever-changing luxury market comes a more demanding luxury

the 263-key Four Seasons Hotel Kuwait at Burj Alshaya will boasts an Italian dining concept as well as a pan-Asian restaurant on the penthouse level, along with three other outlets. An indoor pool and a spa and fitness complex will complete the experience, while for meetings and glamorous weddings, two ballrooms and five function areas will be available. Kuwait is taking baby steps to boost its tourism, and as Schuler pinpointed, reports suggest gradual annual increases in industry-related investments over the coming year. This, supported by growing passenger arrivals at the airport, paint a positive picture for the future. “Due to all this, Kuwait is becoming a hotspot in the Middle East for travellers for authentic and luxurious experiences,” enthused Schuler. Likewise, Petek referred to the country’s 2015-2025 development strategy in which tourism was given a high priority, with plans to create a world-class leisure and business destination. “According to figures by WTTC, investment is anticipated to grow 10.8 percent this year alone,” reminded Petek. “With this growth, the luxury segment will form a considerable portion of the anticipated projects in the country […].” 

INTERVIEW WITH

Darren Darwin GENERAL MANAGER, ANANTARA AL JABAL AL AKHDAR

Opening this summer, Oman's new Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar Resort will offer a truly unique experience at a stunning location, with high-end facilities and luxurious touches as Darren Darwin, general manager, Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar, explains.

Travel Trade Luxury: How would you describe the profile of your future clientele?

in order to make the most of the location while also preserving the nature?

Darren Darwin: We believe that with the unique location and exciting, engaging experiences plus the Anantara brand, we will succeed in luring travellers from the GCC and beyond. Our target clientele is discerning, well-travelled and adventurous travellers from Gulf countries as well as internationally, particularly from Europe. [...] To cater towards these different types of travellers, we have 115 rooms, of which 33 are one- and two-bedroom pool villas, which boast an infinity pool overlooking the cliffs or hidden in an exotic garden. We also have 82 premier and deluxe rooms, which are amongst the largest in the country. Finally, the three-bedroom royal mountain villa is perfect for our more discreet guests, with its own entrance, private parking and huge personal infinity pool. [...]] Perched 2,000m above sea level on the curving rim of a great canyon, Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar is the highest five-star resort in the Middle East and amongst the highest in the world, with temperatures roughly 15 degrees cooler than in the rest of the Gulf region.

Darren Darwin: We have been building this property since 2011, giving ourselves enough time to ensure it has been designed to the highest standards and attention to detail has been paid to every aspect, while also ensuring that the natural surroundings are preserved and protected. Designed by award-winning French-Moroccan architect Lotfi Sidirahal from Atelier PoD Architecture, the resort reflects its culturally rich and diversely vibrant background. Prior to the design, Lotfi and his team spent considerable time exploring the surrounding area, meeting with inhabitants of the mountains and visiting abandoned villages to immerse themselves into the culture and ensure the resort stays true to the charm and intrigue of its locale. Constructed using traditional building techniques and local building materials, Lotfi has designed the resort to reflect Omani history and culture, with a contemporary flair. [[...]] Furthermore, the landscaping has been developed to resemble a local village [[...]].

Travel Trade Luxury: What measures have been taken

34

Travel Trade Luxury: With upcoming openings like Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar Resort as well as Al

Baleed Salalah Resort by Anantara, Oman continues to strengthen its high-end profile. How will these openings change the Sultanate’s perception? Darren Darwin: The Sultanate is a unique country in the GCC region, filled with white sand beaches, rolling desert dunes and expansive mountain ranges and most importantly, it has preserved its own identity as an Arabian country, with a rich history, culture and heritage. Add to this is a wonderful climate, which our resort enjoys year-round and recent investment into infrastructure such as the USD6.1 billion development of enhanced airport facilities and you can see why the country is definitely a rising destination, capable of luring the luxury traveller. As a market leader, we believe that Anantara’s presence in Oman will open the country up to more international travellers and place Oman firmly on the map as a sought after destination in the Middle East. As an international brand, we will be using our global resources to promote our openings in Oman, and we hope this will continue to raise the country’s profile as a perfect luxury holiday destination, full of culture, history and unique experiences. Additionally, with the development of other five-star properties, we believe that Oman is definitely on the road to becoming a major player in the hospitality industry.
