Most international travellers are said to be more compassionate of what is happening in other parts of the world, while being better able to display empathy towards others. Other benefits include feeling happier due to the natural flow of dopamine that comes from adventure, as well as increasing confidence levels by pushing travellers out of their comfort zone in a foreign land. opting for a luxury stay in their home city, which has resulted in a substantial boost in domestic guests. Not only has the number of local visitors skyrocketed, but being named as the 2022 FIFA World Cup host country has firmly placed Qatar on the international tourism map. Jenny Graham, director, Quintessentially Travel, further explained that this, along with the expansion of Qatar Airways has increased awareness of the country. She continued, “[It is] a huge departure from the country that

many were not familiar with 15 years ago.” Despite that the majority of Banana Island Resort Doha by Anantara’s patrons arrive from the Gulf region, Fehlbier described a notable diversification in the property’s visitors, with a substantial boost in bookings from international clientele, which he believes is due to Qatar being a new and exciting option for those seeking opulence. ABOVE AND BEYOND In addition to being a novel holiday location, Qatar’s signature hospitality gives it an edge over other destinations. Mentioning that the exceptionally high standards have arisen from the expectations of locals, Graham added, “The service is unparalleled.” The outstanding hospitality has been bolstered by the need to stand out within a crowded market. The recent arrival of top brands, facilities and services that showcase extravagance in Qatar has increased competition, consequently resulting in an improved quality of service illustrated Al-Nammari. In fact, the high-end sector has boomed in the past decade, according to Deloitte’s report, Middle East Hotel Market Intelligence Report Qatar, the number of luxury addresses grew 75 percent between 2009 – 2014. Furthermore, the standards of hotels in the country are considered to be much higher than elsewhere. As Willats demonstrated, the average room size in Europe is 28m2, while in Qatar it is 46m2. Besides this, the country’s leading properties tend to have much more in terms of culinary offerings, while ShangriLa Hotel Doha endeavours to relay the spirit of Qatar from the beginning of its guests’ experience, with a falcon on hand to greet visitors upon their arrival. NOT JUST A STOPOVER
Qatar Executive
Perhaps regarded as the ultimate in luxury travel, the demand for private jets continues to soar, Ettore Rodaro, executive vice president, Qatar Executive, described an increase in popularity due to journeys being tailor made offering flexibility, exceptional personal service, privacy, and most importantly, no hassle. To keep up with demand, Rodaro added that the company has invested in an additional 33 Gulfstream 650ERs, to satisfy the call for longer journeys, of which Doha is often factored into as a brief stopover. Thanks to Qatar Airways, the country is a well-established layover option but local industry professionals are keen to show it is a worthy high-end standalone destination. “Qatar has succeeded in transforming itself into an aviation hub, and is now reinventing itself into a hub for culture and lifestyle [...],” depicted Eric Poon, director, marketing communications, Mandarin Oriental Doha. While there are a whole host of cultural offerings, ranging from world-class museums, galleries and shopping, to unspoiled desert and ancient souks, hoteliers across Qatar agree that the country’s definition of luxury is wholly dependent on traveller wants and needs. “Luxury is defined by the individual, not the service providers,” noted Willats, adding that being time efficient can be the greatest extravagance for a business guest, while a family day can be the epitome of luxury for others.

2015 Ranking. The Russian travel trade industry has been focussing more on cultural tourism due to the positive impact that this could have on the tourism sector and, in a larger extend, on the country’s economy. Statistics by The Travel & Tourism Competitiveness Report 2015 show that Russia’s high rankings on natural and cultural heritage sites could have a large positive impact on the role of tourism in the economy. The report also indicates that, although Russia ranks relatively low on seeing tourism as a national priority, its high scores on natural and cultural heritage sites show how the industry could potentially play a bigger role in the country’s economy. It could build on strengths in air transport infrastructure and health and hygiene, although the destination has to overcome challenges in safety and security, environmental sustainability and the business environment. The natural beauties and rich cultural heritage of the country are strong incentives for tourists who lay their interest in adventurous travelling in combination with the luxury accommodation offerings. “Russia as a luxury destination has rapidly developed in recent years. The extraordinary natural beauty and rich cultural heritage of Russia, perhaps, plays a crucial role palaces, majestic churches, galleries of high art and many unique historical monuments attract luxury tourists from around the world,” concluded, Perova.

INTERVIEW WITH
Deepak Khullar VICE PRESIDENT, SALES AND MARKETING, THE LEELA PALACES, HOTELS AND RESORTS
With hospitality rooted in ancient dharmas, Deepak Khullar, vice president, sales and marketing, The Leela Palaces, Hotels and Resorts, talks luxury in India
TRAVEL TRADE LUXURY: What are the expectations of your affluent clients ? DEEPAK KHULLAR: Inspired by our four brand pillars encompassing India, Luxury, Grace and Nature, our approach is to build products that create new luxury benchmarks in terms of design, space, lighting, appointments, local aesthetics, technology and comfort, juxtaposed with a passionate drive by our associates to pursue service excellence. Also, a relatively higher staff to guest ratio as well as a strong guest information system, puts us in a better position to anticipate guest requirements and exceed them. This, we believe, resonates well with our guests who represent the top echelons of the affluent society in every international source market, including our home market of India. We have a good mix of these guests which helps in de-risking our top-lines by not having to depend only on a few markets. TRAVEL TRADE LUXURY: Has there been a shift in where your affluent guests from? DEEPAK KHULLAR: Luxury travel in general is a lot more resilient to negative developments than most other customer groups. Thus, whilst the Russian inbound market, post the currency collapse in

2014, witnessed a drastic drop in charters to Goa, luxury travellers from this market continued to travel. Apart from the traditional luxury markets of the US and UK, we are seeing a healthy growth from the Latin American markets. Accentuated by our growing brand salience and a growing yearround base from our home market, we are seeing a very healthy growth in demand. TRAVEL TRADE LUXURY: In your opinion, what makes India an ideal luxury destination for guests? DEEPAK KHULLAR: India as a destination is a microcosm of the world’s best in terms of sights, topography, culture, history, culinary and shopping experiences. It also boasts of an impressive range of branded luxury hotel accommodation spanning original palaces, modern palaces, forts and havelis. Complimenting this high level of myriad luxury product offerings are the high levels of service standards that not many markets can match, especially those provided by the top-end hotels. There are very few luxury markets that can offer this unique value for money, making India an absolutely irresistible experience. TRAVEL TRADE LUXURY: What can you offer affluent guests who are visiting?
DEEPAK KHULLAR: We offer a glorious product, representative of a modern India; Indian hospitality routed in our ancient dharmas, steeped in tradition and ensconced with grace and nature; and experiences that are curated to resonate with a luxury traveller. Towards this end, and to amplify the ease of doing business with quotient, we have curated experiences spanning sights and culture, culinary, shopping, spa and spiritual, art walks, Kamal – for our single lady travellers and destination wedding offers. [...] TRAVEL TRADE LUXURY: Have you launched any new iniatives? DEEPAK KHULLAR: Earlier in 2016, we launched our all-devices responsive, easy to navigate and e-commerce oriented site. The three-step booking process, integrated with a payment gateway, allows guests to buy the lowest rates available anywhere online, by choosing restricted rates which is applicable across all rate plans and all room categories, a first in the hospitality world. These rates are also calibrated to incentivise those who book and pay earlier. We are extremely delighted and encouraged to note that a majority of our guests are availing of this unique rate structure and benefiting hugely from booking directly with us.
