r Tara Swart, neuroscientist in residence, Corinthia Hotel London, revealed top tips on how to overcome jetlag, often seen as a burden on many long-haul trips. Swart commented on how a holiday can be beneficial for the brain, giving vacationers an opportunity to rest and recalibrate. She further stated, “Research carried out by the University of California, Berkeley shows that acute disruption of circadian rhythms – our biological clock-causes memory and learning problems and long-term changes in brain anatomy, long after travellers have returned to their regular schedule.” In a three-phase approach, Swart highlighted the importance of shifting internal rhythms with exposure to daylight, drinking plenty of water, and limiting the use of blue-light emitting devices.

INTERVIEW

INTERVIEW WITH

Haris Mohamed ACTING MANAGING DIRECTOR, MALDIVES MARKETING AND PUBLIC RELATIONS CORPORATION (MMPRC)

While explaining how the Maldives differs from other destinations in terms of luxury, Haris Mohamed, acting managing director, Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC), discusses the organisations latest efforts in promoting quality and sustainable growth in the local tourism industry.

Travel Trade Luxury: How does the Maldives differ from other destinations in terms of luxury? Haris Mohamed: The Maldives is well known for its unique geographical setting and its one island, one resort approach which ensures ultimate privacy for its guests. This is one of the main reasons why high-end celebrities choose the Maldives to spend their holiday. In addition, the Maldives resorts offer a wide range of award winning products including underwater restaurants, spas and underground wine cellars. Many high-end properties have been opened during the last two months. Over the years, the Maldives has won prestigious awards, including the Indian Ocean Leading Beach Destination at the World Travel Awards 2015.

30

Travel Trade Luxury: Which are the Maldives’ key source markets and how have they changed within the Maldivian luxury tourism segment? Haris Mohamed: Our major markets include China, Germany, the UK, Russia, Italy, India, France, Austria, Japan, Spain and Switzerland. According to a visitor survey conducted in September 2016, tourists choose the Maldives for its unique beaches which are ideal for snorkeling, diving, wellness, rest and relaxation. The same survey has indicated that the majority of visitors fall in the age group of 25 – 34 years. Travel Trade Luxury: What are the Maldives' latest efforts to promote the destination to affluent travellers?

Haris Mohamed: In developing our marketing tools, we focus on delivering the right messages to the luxury segment. Through destination marketing platforms such as tourism fairs and road shows, we target potential high net worth individuals. In addition, our resorts are taking part in travel trade fairs and shows, while also advertising their amenities in luxury magazines. We are also planning to carry out familiarisation trips for celebrities in order to generate excitement and public awareness of the Maldives and to create high-impact exposure of the destination by leveraging activity around the celebrities visit. The fact that numerous luxury brands have invested and are still investing in the Maldivian tourism sector enhances our efforts in making the Maldives a luxury destination.
