The Sun Siyam Iru Fushi Maldives
A GATEWAY TO TRANQUILLITY When you picture the Maldives, it is automatically associated to luxury, and in a world constantly surrounded by strain, a bit of tranquillity can be a truly opulent experience. Away from hectic roads, pollution and other distractions of urban life, the Maldives becomes a peaceful hideaway to all those seeking to escape from the everyday reality.
ANNA SPYROU WRITES
O
ne of the most attractive features about being on small islands is the feeling of seclusion. Following the ‘one resort-one island’ concept, which reduces the number of tourists who visit an island, the Maldives promises ultimate privacy and intimate luxury. “Relaxed elegant service sprinkled with beautiful surprises in surroundings that are as private as their own home […] is a draw that is hard to resist”,
6
enthused John Allanson, general manager, Outrigger Konotta Maldives Resort. Evgenia Boyankova, group director, business development, The Sun Siyam Iru Fushi Maldives, commented that the need for absolute privacy plays an integral role in the selection of the destination. “Privacy [is] at its best, as our resorts are on private islands [to enable guest] to spend quality time with family and friends.”

“In the Maldives, each resort is located on a private island and this is the main reason why these tiny islands are so unique [...] the picture becomes perfect with the white sand beaches and the azure blue sky”, commented Jorge Fernandez, director revenue management, Starwood Hotels and Resorts, the Maldives. MARKET SOURCE AND STEPS TOWARDS THE FUTURE Even though most hoteliers and Maldives-based agents agree that European tourism is the industry’s main source of income, some interesting shifts have been reported. Shedding light on to the altering patterns, Mohamed Riyaz, CEO, Lets Go Maldives, stated, “Presently, Chinese arrivals are increasing and China is becoming an emerging market for us. […] Chinese [guests] like to enjoy the uniqueness of the island tourism.” Fuelled by its strong economic growth, China is becoming a leading origin market and according UNWTO China will generate 100 million travellers by 2020. Fernandez posited that apart from wedding anniversaries and honeymoons, a high proportion of affluent clients choose the Maldives for having big birthday parties and celebrating Christmas and New Year’s Eve with family and friends. Similarly, Riyaz noticed that the peak season is the festive season with a high demand from the Europeans. In an attempt to promote their products and attract more affluent clients, hoteliers and the Maldives-based travel agents have started upgrading their services while also collaborating with other luxury industry partners including airlines and participating in international luxury shows such as ILTM Cannes and ILTM Shangai. According to Haris Mohamed, acting managing director, The Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC), important improvements have been made during the recent years especially regarding the use of social media in the marketing campaigns. “We have planned exclusive road shows […] and we also intend to carry out familiarisation trips for celebrities. The main purpose of this campaign is to generate excitement and awareness of the Maldives and to create high-impact exposure for the destination by leveraging activity around the celebrities”, commented Mohamed.

In order to incorporate sustainability into the brand’s ethos, in 2016 Bandos Maldives, launched the Coral Gardening Project, a long-term plan implemented to share learning experiences with guests while also accelerating coral growth regeneration in the atoll reef. Mohamed Zimyan, marketing executive, Bandos Maldives, commented on the initiative, “The Bandos house reef is one of the best in the region, and since signing the Biosphere Reserve Pledge in 2016, we have allocated around 800m2 of our house reef as a core biosphere reserve.” Bandos Maldives project successfully demonstrated that luxury and sustainable tourism can co-exist. TAILOR-MADE EXPERIENCES “We understand that each guest has a different persona, so we provide tailor-made experiences with attention to details,” stressed Fernandez. The dedicated butler service, offered by Taj Exotica Resort & Spa, is a fine example of creating customised services. Vishal Singh, general manager, Taj Exotica Resorts & Spa, commented on the significance of their guest service, “From unpacking luggage to customising a private bar or providing an array of personal amenities, […] our butlers endeavour to make each guest’s stay personalised and stress-free”. As no island escape is complete without an emphasis on wellness, The Sun Siyam Iru Fushi Maldives’ award winning spa promises an island-inspired indulgence and a holistic renewal for its visitors. Boyankova stated that for even more tailored treatments, guests are invited to book a consultation with the resident Ayurvedic doctor who will desingn the ideal therapies based on the individual mind and body type. W Retreat & Spa Maldives (Starwood Hotels & Resorts)
Gan International Airport’s new standing, with inaugural global flights opening and private jets landing, is also vital for the future of tourism in the Maldives. “We are confident that Gan International Airport’s new global status will attract additional international flights. SriLankan Airlines is the first to arrive to the airport. We are optimistic that more will quickly follow,” enthused Allanson.

With private resorts on tiny islands, rejuvenating spas, and clear waters, the Maldives transforms luxury into an enriching personal experience allowing time for reflection, personal encounters, seclusion, romance, family, and complete relaxation. It is an ideal destination for all those looking to spending quality time with their loved ones for to escaping from the norms of everyday life and get lost in the tranquillity of the archipelago.

OPULENCE UNRAVELLED THROUGH CULTURE However deep one invests in luxury tourism, the roots of Egypt’s heritage feeds this first-class trend, with it’s ancient of culture and plethora of natural wealth that not only attracts regular luxury seekers, but draws onlookers who pursue a new way to create lavish memories.
PANAYIOTIS KARANICHOLAS WRITES
A
ccording to Teri Friesen, vice president, sales and marketing, Africa, Möevenpick Hotels & Resorts, travellers are redefining what true luxury is and this segment is no longer positioned as grandiose opulence. “For many, things like time, personalisation, peaceful enjoyment and memorable historical or cultural experiences have become more important than the physical trappings which have been associated with luxury.” The upscale products of Egypt stem from its history along with cultural antiquities. As further stated by Friesen, the region is embraced in luxury offerings and transports globetrotters on an unforgettable

experience through time via classical Egypt. Whether it is a an exclusive tour of the pyramids of the Pharaohs after sand boarding through the Giza desert, or embarking on journey through a labyrinth of shops and alleyways in the ancient Khan el-Khalili, Egypt tickles the fancy of any discerning tourist. Moreover, Gerhard Mitrovits, general manager, Royal Maxim Palace Kempinski, Cairo, explained that the ancient treasures of Egypt combined with nature, Mediterranean shores, dive sites and Nile cruises, fused with the true luxury hotel experience, make Egypt enticing to the most discerning guests.

LUXURY HAS NO ROOTS When it comes to high end clientele, Mitrovits, stated, “We have a much diversified market as we are aiming for a high end clientele. We aim for the Gulf region as well as the European and US markets. Most of these [visitors] are business clients and individuals who look for the ultimate luxury experience.” Enhancing this view, Friesen added, “Möevenpick Hotels & Resorts has strong brand recognition in Europe and the Middle East, and as a result, we see affluent travellers hailing from across these regions. Germany and Switzerland are two key markets for us and in recent years we are seeing more travellers from Jordan, UAE and Saudi Arabia.” Resurgence has also been seen from Japan, China and South Korea in recent years whilst travellers from the UK and the US have had high propensity to travel to the region, with Germany emerging as a key market in Western Europe and the GCC region, making Egypt an easily accessible destination, added Friesen. Commenting on this niche market, Mitrovits explained that affluent travellers are pampered from the day of their arrival and that the Royal Maxim Palace Kempinski, Cairo offers VIP airport pick up in a prestigious vehicle, escorting guests to the premise, where there is an array of culinary options to choose from or the European Spa offering tranquility and relaxation.
“Egypt is a destination of abundant luxury. [Guests] cannot escape the immense significance of the history,” explained Friesen, further adding that experiencing the monuments and cultural sites on offer, is a truly unforgettable experience for all. Additionally, The Red Sea presents world class, unspoiled diving that will connect onlookers to nature, and also serves as an important economic contributor to the region.
from the bustling city life and embrace the fresh air, with the privilege of nearby amenities, including the new business district in Cairo and the easily accessible airport, further stated Mitrovits. Friesen concurred that, although affluent guests enjoy holiday time and primarily travel for pleasure on the Nile Cruises and at the Red Sea resorts, visitors on business can embark upon these journeys and can take advantage of an innovative approach to combining a unique business trip with pleasure, forming memories on the journey. THE WONDERS OF THE NILE Friesen, commenting on the Nile cruises the company boasts, exclaimed, “The Mövenpick SS Misr is undeniably the brands flagship, and is the only internationally managed steamship in Egypt.” She reinstated that the historically originated vessel serves as a floating time capsule from the reign of King Farouk, incorporating artifacts and archaic, yet iconic décor, attractions and offerings, renowned among passengers. The boat offers 24 individually designed suites, restaurants and numerous culinary outlets, including Royal Cuisine gastronomic experience and gourmet dishes served on crystal bone and china. Friesen further analysed that the Mövenpick SB Feddya redefines dahabeya, the term used to describe the traditional Egyptian sailboat. Despite being the smallest dahabeya on the Nile, it offers a vast amount of space to cater the most discerning guests, boasting four uniquely-designed suites all incorporating a private patio
or balcony. The sun deck, Jacuzzi and lounge, add to the onboard experience of a private world of exclusive refinements, according to, Friesen, whilst each suite has a 24 hour butler and laundry service aiding to provide a seamless luxury stay, highlighted via chefs who are set to curate guests’ gastronomic requirements. A BRIGHT FUTURE AHEAD
ENTWINING BUSINESS WITH LEISURE Whether it is an escapade for pure leisure or a business trip entwined with luxury holiday making, there is no fine line regarding opulence. According to Mitrovits, “There is a shift from tourist to more business and meeting clients, with a large portion of individuals.” Both leisure and business visitors seek to relax away
