Isolated from Africa millions of years ago, Madagascar has evolved a rich ecology and landscape that is equally bizarre and unique, hosting quirky lemurs as well as endemic varieties of Baobab and Octopus trees. The Indian Ocean country is the world’s fourth largest island, but what is more interesting is that in some regions, tombs are painted with bright colours to drive sadness away. Madagascar will amaze tourists with its sparkling white-sand beaches, breathtaking sunsets, lush accommodations and mountain-cradled retreats.

ong Kong welcomed 59 million visitors in 2015, registering a slight 2.5 percent year-on-year decline, with Mainland China remaining the largest inbound market, followed by Taiwan, South Korea, the US and Japan.
According to Sammy Musa, managing director, Gulf Reps, Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) representative, the witnessed decrease in arrivals is attributable to the uncertainty in the global economic environment and the depreciation of currencies in some countries. Despite this, as an international city state, Hong Kong’s luxury tourism sector remains quite stable under the shrinking economy, posited Benedict Chow,

general manager, Harbour Grand Hong Kong, highlighting the variety of products, attentive services, new attractions and travel safety as the key pillars of gaining visitors’ long-standing support. The hotel itself, which received over 150,000 guests in 2015, is, according to Chow, positioned as an affordable upscale property with luxurious service standards. LUXURY TALKS Irrespective of declining figures, the destination remains head-strong in its pursuit of appealing to opulence-seeking travellers.

“Luxury tourism is an important segment of Hong Kong’s tourism industry as it drives high-yield overnight arrivals. The growing presence of luxury hotel brands, [...] over 50 Michelin-starred restaurants and the opening of more stores by international designer brands, [...] will ensure [that] Hong Kong remains an attractive destination for affluent travellers from around the world,” added Musa. In agreement, Nikhil Kilpady, sales and marketing manager, UAE and Oman, Cathay Pacific Airways, commented, “[Hong Kong] is a fascinating and vibrant destination, especially for luxury travel. Tourists can enjoy a diverse spread of exclusive experiences fused with rich culture, heritage, sports, food and art.” In an effort to cater to high-end travellers, the airline, which carried 34 million passengers in 2015, up 7.9 percent over 2014, offers five business class lounges at Hong Kong International Airport. EXPERIENCES ABOVE ALL As Rebecca He, product and public relations manager, China Highlights, noted, Hong Kong’s luxury offerings differ for the various source markets. Visitors from Mainland China seek high-quality accommodation, restaurants and shopping, while Western guests tend to value unique experiences exclusive to the destination, she explained. “Travellers in the luxury sector spend a lot of money and represent a significant export opportunity for Hong Kong. The key products are of course hotels, guides, and authentic experiences which are unique to Hong Kong.[...]. It is important that the unique culture of Hong Kong is preserved,” explained Phil Ingram, director of global marketing, Remote Lands, stressing the importance of bespoke experiences as a driving force for luxury travel in the city. “The Peninsula always strives to offer one-of-a-kind and authentic experiences to [its] guests,” noted Sherona Lau, director of marketing, China South, Hong Kong and Taiwan, The Peninsula Hong Kong, pinpointing the property’s bespoke programmes through The Peninsula Academy, which are specifically designed to provide travellers with an insight into the dynamic destination. Highlights include dim sum making journey and caviar connoisseurship, among more. Similarly, Irene Tan, director of marketing, Four Seasons Hotel Hong Kong, explained that the definition of luxury has evolved to now value exotic experiences, hence, the continuous growth of Hong Kong’s upscale segment. The hotel, which accommodated 80,000 guests from a variety of markets in 2015 – acknowledging the changing needs of opulent-seeking clients – also places great emphasis on personalised service. On the other hand, Joyce Wong, director of marketing, Hong Kong SkyCity Marriott Hotel, argued that the destination has yet to fully tap into the luxury travel sector, although she was quick to highlight the growth potential as the city state is taking strides to elevate its status in this market through several product enhancements in the pipeline, including new attractions and additional offerings focussing on experiential travel. Echoing Wong’s remarks, Tan elaborated on the destination’s latest developments whilst recognising the need for further improvements and new itineraries that put the spotlight on Hong Kong’s cultural landmarks and heritage in a bid to keep pace with competing locations. Stronger collaboration among tour operators, more proactive promotions by HKTB and partnerships with neighbouring non-competitive destinations to extend stay periods of long-haul visitors are just some of the actions that Hong

Kong should contemplate in order to offset declining arrivals, posited Noel Chai, director of sales and marketing, The Excelsior, Hong Kong. “Despite the uncertain macro-economic environment, we remain positive in our industry outlook as we focus our resources on driving high-yield overnight arrivals and maintain a diverse market portfolio as well as uphold Hong Kong’s image as[...] a world-class destination,” concluded Musa.

aving reclaimed its position in the world’s top 10 destinations in 2014, Mexico remains a firm favourite among US and Latin American vacationers; the country is, however, now determined to showcase its unique tourism product – that will amaze even the most discerning guests – to a global audience.
Acknowledging the strong contribution and potential of high-end travellers, the Mexican Tourism Board’s focus has in recent years shifted from mass tourism to quality experiences, thus, the organisation’s campaign touting the Central American country as an attractive destination for those with a penchant for lifetime memories.
18
To this end, the board has also amplified its efforts to diversify its markets beyond North and Latin America. “Mexico is well-known for being a welcoming country offering a great diversity of services, activities and attractions,” said Victor Lopez, director of sales, Las Alamandas Resort, disclosing that at the eco beach hideaway, luxury seekers make up 100 percent of the clientele. This niche segment is indeed an important and, nevertheless, growing sector for the country, reaffirmed Martha Paredes, director of sales and marketing, Presidente InterContinental Guadalajara, attributing the country’s rising profile

among premium category travellers to the fine combination of beaches and cities as well as the destination’s distinctive characteristics that include culture, music as well as local cuisine. In addition, Cabo remains a real magnet for those looking for the extraordinary, suggested Angela Cava, vice president, sales, RMC, a US-based destination management company mainly catering to the luxury segment. “San Jose’s authentic culture combined with hip Cabo embraces innovation with fresh new luxury hotel products. If you are seeking a new bucket-list destination with organic farms, Cabo is an exceptional choice for your culinary journey where the dramatic desert view meets the splendour of the ocean playground,” commented Cava, throwing the spotlight of the destination’s lesser-known and even more special aspects. PERSONALISATION IS ALL Hoteliers, however, refrain from simply relying on the country’s postcard-worthy landmarks, and instead focus on crafting personalised services and enriching experiences to ensure a fulfilling vacation. This may include a myriad of details from farm-to-table dishes – like at Las Alamandas Resort – to dedicated facilities for busy corporate travellers who demand convenience and high-class services while away from their office desk.

experiences and long-lasting memories, rather than just another beach getaway. “Understanding new travel trends, we work seamlessly with tourism service providers to offer costumers well-curated packages that deliver an authentic Mexican experience with an upscale twist,” explained Orozco. Adding to the country’s already impressive range of high-end accommodation scene, Karisma Hotels & Resorts is taking the idea of superior living to the next level by launching Latin America’s first overwater bungalows in the Riviera Maya. Set to open at the adults-only El Dorado Maroma this September, the Palafitos’ first phase of 30 suites will feature glass-bottom floors, direct access to the ocean, private infinity pools and more – all complemented by an overwater restaurant and spa. “El Dorado Maroma’s Palafitos are the most exquisite and unique suites in the entire region,” claimed Armando Chomat, executive vice president, Premier Worldwide Marketing, global representatives for Karisma Hotels & Resorts. “These are the first and only over-the-water offerings in all of Latin America, eliciting a one-of-a-kind experience for travellers seeking the ultimate luxury gateway.”
As Natalia Garcia Lopez, director of public relations, Presidente InterContinental Monterrey, explained, the hotel for example allocated a whole floor for VIP travellers.
With Mexico’s appeal for luxury travellers on the rise, hotel chains, like Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts, are keeping their finger on the pulse by announcing new projects. Located in the Costa Palmas resort community, the 145-room Four Seasons Resort Los Cabos is slated to open in 2018 with a swath of five-star amenities on offer.
“Guests on the executive floor can enjoy their privacy in an exclusive area with [a dedicated] front desk,” informed Garcia Lopez, adding that special attention is being paid to ensure that from coffee breaks to dining options, all services are tailored to the needs and preferences of these travellers.
All these endeavours come in line with the tourism board’s push to extend the country’s reach beyond its traditional markets by showcasing the multifaceted credentials of Mexico to the global traveller in search of enriching experiences.
Personalisation is indeed a key word on the higher end of the Mexican hotel sphere, with Ricardo Orozco, vice president, operation, Solmar Group, saying that the majority of guests at Grand Solmar Land’s End Resort & Spa seek quality
As Orozco suggested, among the target groups are millennials, a growing market with significant spending power, seeking unique, and as he said, Instagram-worthy experiences.

Nevertheless, I strongly feel that, with the ambitious growth plans and vision for the emirate, there is still a lot of room for growth, and new and more international hotel chains will look to capitalise on these opportunities which we feel will only increase the awareness of and demand in the emirate, which ultimately will further boost our revenues.” Delving into the very essence of Ajman’s luxury proposition, Schukowski

elucidated, “Ajman is not as vastly developing as Abu Dhabi or Dubai, but is actually using this as a strength and promoting its strong heritage, cultural awareness and serenity, as well as natural pristine, untouched beaches, making it a charming and tranquil environment and an alternative to the buzzing cities.” UPPING THE GAME This understated and ‘barefoot’ interpretation of luxury also characterises the nearby Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah, both of which are preparing to welcome game-changing properties. The former will firmly cement its luxury credentials with the opening of Anantara Mina Al Arab Ras Al Khaimah Resort, which will bring around 250 guest rooms, suites and Maldivian-inspired overwater villas to the emirate. A project of RAK Properties, it will boast a private beach overlooking an unspoilt eco-reserve lined with mangroves. “Ras Al Khaimah has so much potential as a leisure and lifestyle destination, and RAK Properties’ inspired focus on the environmental aspects of the emirate both in terms of beauty and awareness through Mina Al Arab will further heighten its regional and global touristic appeal,” assured Dillip Rajakarier, CEO, Minor Hotel Group. Awareness of the resort and the emirate in general will also be supported by the new brand identity that had just been launched by Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority (Ras Al Khaimah TDA), which has the emirate’s luxurious indulgences and authentic experiences at the core of its strategy. “It is our priority to enhance the destination and demonstrate its rich Arabian culture, heritage and traditions to a global audience,” enthused Haitham Mattar, CEO, Ras Al Khaimah TDA. No less promising is the neighbouring Fujairah with its first truly luxurious hotel, Fairmont Fujairah, due to open its grand doors this year. Set against the backdrop of the historic Hajar Mountains, the 194-key resort is poised to delight patrons with a Willow Stream spa and a marina, in addition to extensive meeting facilities.

CAUTIOUS OPTIMISM While the Northern Emirates present a wealth of untapped opportunities for top hoteliers, the situation in Abu Dhabi and Dubai is slightly different. “The luxury hotel sector in Abu Dhabi has undergone a rapid transformation since 2011,” explained Archana Kawatra, director of sales and marketing, Sofitel Abu Dhabi Corniche. “With a compound annual growth rate of 16 percent in luxury hotel rooms between 2011 and 2015, the market has seen the introduction of several luxury hotel developments including two St. Regis properties, Sofitel Abu Dhabi Corniche, The Ritz-Carlton Abu Dhabi, Grand Canal, Anantara-branded properties]and Rosewood Abu Dhabi, which made the capital’s luxury hospitality sector fiercely competitive,” she explained, expressing her concern that the new openings planned for the next two years will have direct implications for the future performance of the capital city’s luxury hotel market, if projects are delivered on time.

She further pointed to recent research by STR Global which showed that while demand rose 1.5 percent year-on-year in December 2015, it was outstripped by supply which surged 4.4 percent. However, as the relevant market report suggests, the UAE capital can rely on its historically exceptional demand growth rates to revert the trend. A solid proof to the healthy interest is the impressive performance reported by Al Bateen Executive Airport, which saw a nine percent year-on-year increase in passenger numbers in 2015. This translates into 2,703 aircraft on its grounds and 43,278 passengers served in both the VIP and Sheikh Zayed Terminals. “The steady influx of passengers at Al Bateen Executive Airport is testament to its world-class services, top-quality facilities and strategic location as the region’s only airport tailor-made for the business aviation industry,” said Ahmad Al Haddabi, chief operations officer, Abu Dhabi Airports. Equally encouraging was the 17 percent boost in traffic reported by Etihad Airways for 2015, alongside a host of new flights and destinations that had been or will be introduced this year. Its Airbus A380 footprint, complete with The Residence by Etihad concept, had been further extended with three daily services to London Heathrow as well as with new routes to Sydney and New York, while Mumbai and Melbourne will join the network this year. The carrier’s opulent First Suites have been also made available to passengers flying to Washington, D.C., Zürich, Singapore and Brisbane, and it will soon also be offered to new Boeing 787-9 destinations. FIERCELY EVOLVING The face of Dubai is poised to undergo the most dramatic changes, as the city awaits the completion of several ultra-luxurious mixed-use and residential projects which will add more options to the market. One of the most notable developers, Nakheel revealed plans for a new St. Regis-branded Beach Club, due to open on Palm Jumeirah, complete with an infinity pool stretching almost 100m along the coast. The project is the result of an agreement between Nakheel and Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide for a new luxury property, The St Regis Dubai – The Palm, planned to be unveiled by 2018. “This exclusive [beach club] will reinforce Palm Jumeirah’s position as the global location for luxury living and leisure by offering the unrivalled facilities that St Regis guests across the world are accustomed to,” enthused Ali Rashid Lootah, chairman, Nakheel. However, most anticipated the development on the city’s top-tier hospitality scene is Al Habtoor City, which is injecting 1,600 rooms into the market across three hotels: The St Regis Dubai, W Dubai – Al Habtoor City and The Westin Dubai, Al Habtoor City. houses nine lounges spread over 6,926m2. These, and a host of other similarly luxurious newcomers, are arriving amidst decreasing occupancy rates in the emirate. Still, the overall performance of Dubai’s accommodation sector cannot murk the industry-wide confidence with Dubai Department of Tourism & Commerce Marketing indicating that in 2015, the destination welcomed more than 14.2 million overnight guests, 7.5 percent more than in 2014, double the World Tourism Organization's projected average global growth rate of three to four percent. To cater to the further growth in arrivals, Dubai International has unveiled its new USD1.2 billion Concourse D, increasing the airport's capacity from 75 million passengers per year to 90 million. “Shorter walking distances, more comfortable seating areas, more choice in lounges and a world-class retail and food and beverage offering are sure to impress and delight our passengers and our airline partners,” said H.H. Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, chairman, Dubai Airports. While some of the emirates yearn for more properties to reflect their rich heritage and authentic culture, others already give out the impression of an overcrowded marketplace. Yet, the steadily increasing interest in the country‘s hospitality market is a soothing reminder that the UAE’s premium travel market has yet to peak.

CEO, Soneva Resorts
Director of spa training, Ananda in the Himalayas, India
Q: What are the most prominent trends dominating the luxury wellness segment? SHIVDASANI: Recently, we moved from having more people in cities than in the countryside. The pace of urbanisation continues. The wealthy tend to be located in the main capitals of the world. They are sharing similar experiences whether it is the food, the shops, the style of houses, offices, cars [or others]. So there is a greater demand for space, privacy, and genuine authentic experiences. There is a greater interest in alternate healing and more natural wellness. Attention is also focussed on the ingredients and the origin of the ingredients. UGRIN: Luxury wellness is increasingly becoming more experiential and purposive. At Ananda, what this means in practical terms is a focus on the whole person, rather than delivering superficial treatments that are only skin deep. We strive to create aligned programmes, where every aspect of a retreat experience supports the desired outcome. Our efforts are toward realising the next level of integration, treating [...] mind, body, spirit, soul. Within luxury wellness, there is a lot of focus on indigenous experiences as well as on connecting with local communities. WAGNER: Wellness is a lifestyle and from this we are seeing more often the trend of tailored wellness regimes to suit individual needs. Guests are looking for stateof-the-art consultations to identify nutritional requirements, physical programmes, as well as relaxation techniques. We also see a trend of guests searching for a place which allows them to escape from the noise of their daily surroundings. Q: How important are result-oriented treatments and quality products to guests? SHIVDASANI: We have a programme at Soneva where we invite practitioners to visit our resorts throughout the year. These people are genuine healers [...]. Guests do return for such learning and healing experiences that have a unique and positive impact on their lives. UGRIN: The luxury destination spa market is maturing and guests are becoming increasingly more knowledgeable and experienced with a wide variety of treatment modalities. With that evolution, we have seen a higher level of

discrimination emerge. For us, it is a positive shift, as our clientele is able to appreciate the special nature and nuance of an Ananda retreat. What we have seen is that it is not just result-oriented treatments by themselves that are drivers for a guest to select their next destination spa – instead it is a fully aligned, holistically designed retreat package. [...] WAGNER: Nowadays with luxury reimagined in leisure travel, we have seen an increasing number of properties whose designs, locations and experiences defy superlatives sufficient to describe them. [...] Many of our guest experiences focus on the emotional connection between the professional therapist and the guest. Q: What is next for the luxury wellness segment? SHIVDASANI: I think it is about going back to the roots and focussing on traditional healing – whether it is Ayurveda, traditional Chinese medicine [or others]. It is about benefitting from and learning from thousands of years of learning and wisdom. UGRIN: Wellness is the ultimate luxury. You cannot feel true luxury if you are in physical, emotional, mental or spiritual disconnection. People are waking up to the realisation that one could spend a lot of time and money on a destination spa visit, experience some short-term relaxation or pleasure, but then feel the previous patterns [...]. The frontier for luxury is about true, lasting wellness. While there are several spas internationally who are adept in presenting very innovative new product-based treatments, Ananda’s focus is on bringing traditional wellness experiences based on the full wisdom and experience of our Ayurvedic doctors, yoga and spa practitioners, fitness trainers and nutritional experts to align a programme suited to their highest evolution. WAGNER: Spiritual and mindful wellness activities are on the rise with full encompassing programmes which include yoga, meditation and readings. Talise Spa does more than help you eat well, exercise hard and focus on health. The therapists listen to what a guests wants, tailoring a programme based on feedback from experts in various fields and going outside the treatment menu to deliver.
