With an ever growing lust for authentic experiences, travellers are showing a preference for small, exclusive and unique accommodation options. This, alongside the vast number of luxury offerings available across the world, has resulted in opulent tourists seeking simplicity, together with services that surpass the expectations of even the most discerning. More and more, affluent globetrotters have a craving for the collection of stories, rather than products, with the ultimate goal of sharing special, unique moments with those closest to them. Hoteliers in Hong Kong are enhancing stays with innovative, bespoke services, pairing travellers with experiences thus creating effortless opportunities for one-of-a-kind anecdotes. Meanwhile, in the UAE, visitors are immersed in the country’s intangible cultural heritage through its exquisite local culinary delicacies, not to mention the myriad of fine dining restaurants showcasing the best gastronomy from across the globe. LUXURIOUS AUTHENTICITY REDEFINED Best of All It’s in Hong Kong is the slogan of the Hong Kong Tourism Board, reflecting the profile of a destination where a myriad of bespoke exclusive offerings fused with oriental authentic experiences keep a pace with a modern definition of luxury tourism.

T

he current trend of luxury travelling, which has been defined by affluent travellers’ demand for authentic memories and impeccable services, encourages the Hong Kong travel providers to constantly move boundaries. Catering to discerning travellers with customised high-end services and offerings through innovation and creativity is the ultimate aim.

“Hong Kong has always served as a top destination for a variety of sectors within tourism, especially in corporate travel as gateway to China as well as serving a very robust luxury sector,” confirmed, Peter Pottinga, general manager, Harbour Grand Kowloon. In line with the present trend, he added that global

consumers have become more affluent, investing disposable income into experiences versus material possessions. HONG KONG DIFFERENTLY The tendency among high-end travellers visiting the hub is their desire to gain authentic experiences rather than engage only in mainstream activities, such as shopping or visiting well-known tourist attractions. Charlotte Harris, head, sales and marketing, Charlotte Travel, confirmed this, and further exemplified on unique offerings, “ High-end attractions include visiting upper-scale restaurants providing delicious local food, sailing on a luxurious old junk boat on Victoria

Harbour and getting a tailored suit made from one of the oldest and the most reputable tailors in the town.” Noticing the guests’ inclination to connect with local customs and nature, Pottinga, also confirmed that discerning visitors search for a break from usual urban daily life, therefore opt for unique tourist experiences, such as a walking tour to the vibrant district of Hung Hom, where one can fully indulge in the destination’s history and its authentic local culture. On the other hand, the destination also has enough on offer for opulent travellers keen to discover authenticity in a contemporary style. Commenting on guests’ requests to taste local daily life, thus highlighting the city’s wet, fruit or flower markets, Louisa Wu, director, commerce, Mandarin Oriental ,Hong Kong, shared an insight, “Some of [the guests] want to pay a visit to older districts of Hong Kong such as Yau Ma Tei, Wan Chai and Shek Kip Mei, exploring a different side of Hong Kong which they seldom see in media. These areas reflect local living and the hustle and bustle of the local life.”

Harris, summarised, “[…] Specialising in creating personalised travel experiences for travellers who have done and seen it all and tailor-made itineraries to fit into our clients’ exact requirements is our forte. […]” Hong Kong is a symbol of genuine extraordinary hospitality with no limits imposed on discerning travellers’ ideas when it comes to collecting unforgettable memories. The ability of service providers to go the extra mile in catering for affluent guests redefines the high standards of luxury travel, motivating opulent visitors to return to this cosmopolitan yet oriental hub, which appears to have it all. 

Harris pinpointed that a popular habit among visitors is to spend their time in the destination eating, therefore emphasised that a discerning traveller’s list should include widely available Michelin-star dining outlets. Richard Woss, managing director, Hong Kong, ATI Travel, elaborated on the quality culinary offerings and recommended indulging in Michelin-star Dim Sum dishes, to experience uniquely designed food and wine pairing dinner packages or behind the scene moments such as tours through high-end restaurants. Adding to the bucket of exclusive authentic options, he further mentioned after dinner Out & About programmes, providing guests with special passes to members only venues. Exploring the authenticity through modern art is yet another aspect attracting affluent visitors to the destination. Vivian Chau, general manager, J Plus Hotel by YOO, revealed that to reflect such interest in art and urban culture and to foster a burgeoning international arts scene the property enhances unique guest experiences with regular pop-art exhibitions in its exclusive art space. SPECIAL REQUESTS GUARANTEED

Mandarin Oriental, Hong Kong

Being a high-end hospitality haven, the metropolis reflects hoteliers’ efforts to win the loyalty of discerning guests by maintaining superior services and customised offerings. Wu elaborated that an ability to create wow moments is what further creates strong relationships with guests. And it appears that Hong Kong hoteliers and travel providers mix the right ingredients to stand-out and exceed any expectations. Pottinga, exemplified that the trend of luxury guests travelling as large families lead to developing more flexible accommodation along with a designated Very Important Kids (VIK) Programme, a scheme for privileged kids. Elaborating on the bespoke facilities, he further mentioned the recently launched HP Club membership programme, boasting exclusive benefits along with the property’s one of a kind private pier that fits with the guests’ privacy along with requirements, offering exclusive access of off-site events with chartered boats, including touring the city through its waters. Shedding more light onto hoteliers’ ability to meet guests’ special requests, Wu, unveiled, ”We once turned our function room into settings of Hong Kong in the old days for an event of our guests.” To attain to individual desires of opulence-seeking guests, she underlined an inevitable role of the concierge team facilitating private designated excursions led by local tastemakers, with a limousine transport option.

ehind every dish there is a story that takes you on a journey, and in the case of the UAE, the cuisine tells many. The country offers a unique blend of Middle Eastern and Asian cuisines, reflecting its rich heritage, as well as its vast exposure to different civilisations.

“Food is without a doubt an intangible aspect of culture. No travel venture is complete without a local culinary experience and this certainly could

not be truer when it comes to travel within the Arab region,” confirmed, H.E. Faisal Al Nuaimi, general manager, Ajman Tourism Development Department (ATDD). Nowdays, the UAE is evolving into an international food and beverage destination, thanks to forward-thinking operators looking to maximise their stake in a market expected to be worth a whopping AED82 billion (USD22.3 billion) by 2020, according to Euromonitor International.

A FOODIE’S HUB “The culinary scene in the UAE, and Dubai in particular, is much like the city itself, extremely dynamic and evolving at a staggering rate”, noted Hicham Hankir, director, food and beverage, The Ritz-Carlton, Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC). Highlighting the broad range of culinary offerings within the emirate, Navsheen Kaul, marketing executive, Meliá Dubai, described that street food festivals, food trucks, fine-dining and American diner concepts are the latest gastronomical trends which are expected to grow. He further added that the hotel caters to affluent travellers, considering their expectations for outstanding culinary experiences in order to quench their thirst. “Here at Meliá Dubai we cater to not only a niche but a diversified clientele trying to embark them on a culinary journey with a special crafted menu by our chefs and personalised services [...]," clarified Kaul. Located in one of Dubai’s most vibrant areas, The Ritz-Carlton, DIFC offers a wide range of memorable dining experiences promising to delight even the most cultivated palates. With the opening of Café Belge in 2014, the hotel introduced a brand new concept in the city’s culinary scene. Celebrating Belgium’s golden era, the restaurant emulates the grand style and elegance of the city in the 1920s, offering exclusively authentic Belgian food complemented by the finest beer, hand-chosen by beer sommeliers. In April, the property expanded its portfolio of fine-dining restaurants with the launch of Le Cirque. Commenting on the newest addition, Hankir stated, “Our team has worked relentlessly to develop new dishes and create a superb overall dining experience that is suited to the region. With the opening of Le Cirque, we are delighted to give our guests something new which celebrates the idea of traditional hospitality.” PROMOTING AUTHENTICITY For Al Nuaimi, hospitality and generosity is at the core of Emirati culture. He explained, “Ajman is a modern city where the tradition of welcoming strangers is ancient and ingrained. Sharing a meal with others is an age old honoured tradition in the Arab world, and an expression of hospitality. Guests are offered cardamom infused coffee and fresh dates, and greetings are often delivered with a hand over the heart.” Despite a lack of global awareness about the destination when compared to the larger emirates, Ajman has a great heritage to build on. The emirate has played a very crucial role in promoting the country’s intangible heritage through a

series of projects and food festivals. Highlighting the growing demand for more authentic experiences when it comes to culinary offerings, Al Nuaimi revealed, “While the emirate of Ajman prides itself in offering a diverse and international selection of cuisine, our focus is on delivering a uniquely Emirati experience to tourists ensuring they have experienced the best of Ajman has to offer.” With culinary tourism becoming a global trend, affluent visitors are seeking unique learning experiences. Gastronomy plays an increasingly prominent part in a highly diverse way, offering an opportunity to encounter unusual ingredients, taste authentic recipes and enjoy local hospitality to enrich one's knowledge about the country’s past, present and future. With its culinary landscape constantly evolving around the traditional ethos, the UAE promises to satisfy the tastebuds of each and every discerning visitor. 
