AT THE CENTRE OF CONTINENTS With its shores being washed by both the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, in a crossroad that combines luscious sandy beaches with tranquil Saharan landscapes, Morocco is a destination boasting unparalled capacities for luxury tourism.

M

orocco has long established itself as a popular travel destination, with tourism directly contributing MAD72.3 billion (USD7.46 billion) or 8.1 percent to the national GDP in 2014, according to the World Travel & Tourism Council.

Based on Morocco’s Vision 2020, the overall size of the industry is set to double by 2020, underscoring the destination’s aim to solidify the ever-favourable economic impact of the sector by doubling arrivals. “Over the past years, the luxury hotel market has developed drastically in Marrakech which explains the important growth of hotel supply, with even more

new projects [expected] to come this year and in 2017. The destination has definitely positioned itself within the luxury tourism [scene],” affirmed Andrea Obertello, resort manager, Four Seasons Resort Marrakech, referring to the Moroccan hospitality sector’s expansion. Indeed, various improvements and enhancements are being implemented in order to cater to the changing requirements of visitors. “With Morocco on the fast track towards development, the country is seeing an increasing number of affluent international leisure and business travellers who are looking for unparalleled experiences,” divulged Olivier Thomas, general

manager Four Seasons Hotel Casablanca. Indeed, industry stakeholders are constantly striving towards elevating the standards of the accommodation and services provided. “[We] remain committed to contributing to the country’s growth by continuously enhancing the quality of the luxury experiences we create for our guests,” confessed Thomas. According to Obertello, the majority of the hotel’s guests arrive from the UK, US and the Middle East, and in 2015, the domestic market also delivered a notable growth. On the other hand, Thomas, noted, “Our hotel’s key feeder demographics are business travellers throughout most of the year with the exception of the summer season when we attract a high number of leisure travellers.” As he further explained Europe accounts for the largest share of the clientele, with France and the UK topping the list, while demand from Saudi Arabia, UAE and Kuwait make the GCC a promising segment as well. “The US is also an important market for us to attract leisure travellers who start or end their Morocco trip in the country’s economic capital and main airport,” revealed Thomas.

Four Seasons Hotel Casablanca

As Jean-Paul Compagnon, manager, Villa des Orangers, disclosed, besides these traditionally strong markets, Canada and Australia have also begun to grow. AUTHENTIC PERSONALISATION Tailor-making clients’ stay is of great importance in Morrocco and Thomas maintains that due to time limitations and demanding schedules, modern day travellers are in constant search of the most favourable details. “At Four Seasons we understand that luxury does not have to be extravagant but providing our guests with a consistent and personalised service wherever they go [is what matters],” Thomas further explained. In addition, he listed technological prowess as an indispensible aspect of luxury, saying, “Guests are becoming increasingly technologically savvy and discerning which poses a challenge for luxury hotels such as ours to keep up with the fast-changing needs and desires of a highly specific traveller segment that is constantly on the lookout for new, unique experiences.” In fact, the majority of visitors arrive to Morocco to witness the country’s landmarks and experience its uniqueness first hand. As Compagnon observed, ”Marrakech is a very popular destination for discerning travellers looking to explore the rich cultural history of one the imperial cities of Morocco.” Underscoring the importance of the authenticity found throughout the city of Marrakech, Obertello highlighted some essential activities for holiday-makers, such as sightseeing, experiencing the seashore destination of Essaouira, cycling through Atlas Mountains and touring Ourika Valley.

such as the complimentary lunch served in the shade of the orange trees.” According to Thomas, the future is unfolding a healthy evolution for luxury tourism in Morocco and in North Africa in general, with a heightened desire for once-in-a-lifetime experiences.

However, as Obortello added, when it comes to luxurious treats, leisure-seekers should not miss out on some of the notoriously well-designed Hammam experiences, massage treatments and yoga classes.

“We expect this trend to continue and we will continue to provide unparalleled services tailored to [our guests’] specific needs,” added Thomas.

Compagnon, explained, “Many of our guests come also for a pampering stay with treatment in our Nuxe Spa or just to relax by the pool and enjoy our services

“Times change, but our dedication to perfecting the travel experience never will,” concluded Obertello. 

PROPELLED TO NEW HEIGHTS Colourful and alluring, Brazil is yet to shine on the global luxury scene. However, with the popularity garnered by the recent Summer Olympic Games, the destination’s success is well within reach.

ANA MLADENOVIC WRITES

“B

razil is an emerging destination in the luxury market, especially for the opportunities it offers with unspoiled nature, cultural diversity and the exceptional Brazilian warmth,” commented Vinicius Lummertz, president, Embratur, also known as Brazilian Tourist Board, elucidating further that the luxury tourism segment in the country is poised to rise 25 percent over the next few years due to the success and global exposure gained by the latest sporting events.

16

“The Olympic Games were above of all expectations,” he enthused. “Previous concerns about the risks of hosting the Games in the country were left behind. In total, we welcomed 541,000 international tourists between July 1 – August 15, an increase of 157,000 people over the same period in 2015.” In addition to hosting a record number of visitors, the event proved to be the ideal platform to flaunt the country’s colourful charms to five billion spectators from all acroos the world.

“It was a unique opportunity to showcase Brazilian destinations with less global visibility,” said Lummertz. This was confirmed by São Paulo-based Carolina Mogames, sales manager, Hotel Unique, who boasted that the property had hosted a big corporate function by one of the major sponsors for the large-scale sporting event. “It was a new product launch that happened before the Games started,” she explained, admitting that the happening did not bring incremental business to São Paulo’s luxury hotels. In Rio de Janeiro, however, the situation was drastically different according to Lummertz, who referred to figures released by the Brazilian Association of the Industry of Rio de Janeiro Hotels (ABIH-RJ) which showed that the occupancy rate in the city reached 95 percent during the event. “Five-star hotels had 98 percent of sold rooms, which is a great result,” he assured. SEIZING THE DAY Now that the event has concluded, the country’s luxury tourism sector is focussed on capitalising on the destination’s increased popularity. “Brazil is the flagship country for luxury tourism in South America, and the travel market is now looking to make the most of tourists seeking out luxury holidays,” acknowledged Lummertz, revealing that luxury tourism has been one of the main segments on which Embratur focusses. More specifically, the organisation is working together with the Brazilian Luxury Travel Association (BLTA) to promote products and segment targets, and to establish, strengthen and expand the continent-wide network.. ENHANCED TOURISM PRODUCT The investments made in the infrastrucutre related to the Games are significant – USD11 billion, 57 percent of which were sourced from the private sector and the remaining 43 percent from the public sector. And as Lummertz elucidated, for every real invested in sports facilities, another five reals were applied in projects for the city that shall remain as a legacy for locals and tourists alike. “The infrastructure built for the Games will have a vital importance to improve the reception given to tourists in Brazil, particularly in terms of airports, urban mobility and qualified staff. Especially for luxury travellers, these improvements will be highly relevant,” he said. AN EVER-BRIGHT OUTLOOK In the first six months of the year, Brazil’s tourism revenue grew seven percent compared to the same period in 2015, while at the same time, the country's economy as a whole showed a decrease of 3.5 percent. “The numbers demonstrate the vigor and sustainability of the sector, which has an impact on 53 segments and favours the recovery of national economic growth,” said Lummertz. It is beyond doubt that events as prestigious as the Summer Olympic Games open up novel opportunities and help increase international awareness, for the benefit of the tourism sector as a whole. This is no different when it comes to Brazil. “Besides improving the perception of Brazil and increasing awareness of the diversity of the Brazilian people, the success of large events we have held, culminating with the Olympic Games, will help to increase the influence that tourism has on Brazil’s economic development,” Lummertz reassured. 

ot only is the gastronomical meal of the country listed as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage, France is also one of the most well-known wine countries with Bordeaux, Champagne and Burgundy being among the most recognisable grape producing regions. According to Tatiana Livesey, co-founder, Winerist, this status attracts not only high-quality customers but curious ones as well, making the European country one of the company’s best selling destinations. Despite what could be described as a turbulent first half of the year with mixed results from hotels, specialist tour operators continue to see robust growth in

the luxury segment, particularly when it comes to wine tours. Genevieve McCarthy, managing director, Cellar Tours, noted, “It has been the best year ever since we started in 2003.” Stéphane Tillement, president, Wine Tour in France, explained that within these specific regions, around 50 percent of luxury demand is related to food and wine, with the high-end market looking for authentic and exclusive memories. Tilleman emphasised the industry’s strength in the face of recent difficulties, so much so that he is launching a new company focussing on wine and dine experiences.

Whilst underlining the strong demand from the luxury segment, Livesey pinpointed that increasingly, individuals are designing their own holidays, often sourcing their own hotels and only requesting the services of agents for specialised tours, programmes and knowledgable guides.

branding of its wine and food destinations fresh and also invests in new developments such as the state of the art wine museum in Bordeaux.” Echoing this sentiment, McCarthy added, “The French are masters at marketing and are known for their creativity.”

GASTRONOMIC DELIGHTS With luxury hotels and award-winning nouvelle cuisine going hand in hand, it comes as no surprise that many travellers are prioritising their accommodation choice based on the property’s culinary offerings. Home to three restaurants, including two Michelin-star La Grand’Vigne, Alice Tourbier, owner, Les Source de Caudalie underscored the importance of gastronomy and wine to the hotel, explaining that it is one of the key reasons visitors opt for this address. Speaking in agreement Robin Oodunt, general manager, Hotel Château Eza, said, “Gastronomy is one of the main experiences our hotel guests [seek].” Both Tourbier and Oodunt observed that diners often ask to meet the chef, and even ask for their menus to be signed, demonstrating knowledge and awareness of renowned chefs and their distinct offerings. Although seasonal and local produce is a prime concern of guests, with customers especially eager to discover regional dishes, Bernard Pétine, CEO, Château des Vigiers highlighted that the highest standard of service is essential to the ultimate dining pleasure. It is clear that experience takes precedence for high-end tourists, so La Grande’Vigne at Les Source de Caudalie offers cooking classes with the chef, wine tasting with the sommelier and food pairing, while visitors staying at Hotel Château Eza also have the chance of enjoying their meals in a unique setting, on a romantic exclusive balcony overlooking the French Riveria. LIFELONG MEMORIES Regardless of its exceptional reputation, France does not rely on its cuisine alone to attract visitors. Livesey expanded, “France constantly keeps the

Besides traditional wine festivals, every year the best vintages are celebrated through Le Marathon Du Médoc, a long-distance wine tasting race through Bordeaux’s vineyards. During the run, a limited number of competitors are offered copious amounts of red or white wine, on top of a broad selection of local gourmet delicacies. With an understanding of the needs of discerning travellers, France offers a lot more than degustation. “Luxury travellers seek experiential tours, whereby they get to experience something more memorable than just seeing the landmarks,” explained Livesey. “Food and wine plays a big role in this area because it offers that personable touch.” Livesey continued to explain that aforementioned customers prefer to be part of more in-depth activities, from truffle hunting to renting out an entire château and winery. Not only do visitors want to participate in cooking classes with awardwinning chefs, but Tillement, McCarthy and Livesey all underscored the popularity of meeting producers and cellar masters at wine estates. Yearning to do more than just observe, with a strong desire to make their mark, some of the most sought-after options include creating a unique grape blend, adopting a vine and making your own wine. Furthermore, flying over vineyards in a helicoptor or hot air balloon are also listed among the top-selling programmes. Indeed, food and wine is a fundamental theme for many France-bound luxury holiday-makers and as concluded by McCarthy, “The chauffeured Mercedes and five-star accommodations are just the backdrop, while the food and wine experiences take central stage.” 
