With the hottest months of the year now over in the Northern Hemisphere, travellers are sifting through their photographs recalling all the experiences that have enriched their lives over the past months. This is, however, also that time of the year when many start planning their next city break or – in the case of the more adventurous ones – their next expedition, which will take them on unchartered paths in lands where the most hidden gems are often tucked away in unexpected places. Those in the search of lifetime memories will look beyond the pyramids when visiting Egypt, travel across a whole continent to unearth Australia’s best-kept secrets, enter places which only the insiders know about in Switzerland or add mysterious and up-and-coming locations like Central Vietnam to their bucket list. Travel Trade Luxury invited local experts to introduce some of the world’s most exclusive spots.

KNOWLEDGE IN LUXURY In the face of five years of socio-political instability, Egypt’s tourism industry has stood its ground, providing high-end services to guests and constantly extending limits.
MEMNON ARESTIS WRITES
T
he North African country undoubtedly largely relies on tourism with the sector’s total contribution to the national GDP reaching 12.8 percent in 2015, according to the World Travel & Tourism Council.
The recent political stabilisation has already started restoring financial confidence in the destination, when compared to previous years, commented Olivier Masson, general manager, Four Seasons Hotel Cairo at Nile Plaza, expressing optimism for the industry’s future prospects. “This year, slowly but surely I expect to see positive results […] on a regional level from the GCC market, and then later on from the international market, [including] Europe and the Americas as well,” Masson posited, further revealing the management’s strong focus on the all-inportant emerging
6
markets of Latin America, China and India, amongst others. MAKING IT PERSONAL Masson maintains the view that Egypt is on everyone’s bucket-list, especially on those who represent the older demographic and are well-travelled. “These are guests who raise the bar for the average guest, so it is always good for us to have world travellers staying with us,” confessed Masson, who considers high standards as the brand’s strongest and most unique trait. “We deliver a personalised service to our guests during their stay,” stated Masson.

These travellers are also often more inclined to explore the country’s rich cultural and archaeological heritage, therefore it is no surprise that many of them specifically request highly experienced and fully qualified Egyptologists, said John Berry, product manager, Egypt, Abercrombie & Kent. “Many travellers have a good knowledge or interest in Egyptian history and exceptionally knowledgeable guides are a must,” he explained. However, these experiences are only complete with similarly unique accommodation options, pinpointed Berry, referring to clients who may be opting for a luxury boat stay, with some showing an interest in joining smaller groups for exciting Nile excursions, and others choosing sightseeing with the assistance of trusted guides. On a similar note, Mahmoud Gebril, president, Osiris Tours, mentioned his clients’ most commonly expressed wishes for privately guided tours to such important sites as the Great Pyramids, the Egyptian Museum, Valley of the Kings and Queen Hatshepsut’s temple. “All of our clients ask for a luxury Nile cruise so they can enjoy sailing down the Nile between Luxor and Aswan,” he added. Besides the highly qualified guides, the standard of these vessels further raises the bar with most of these smaller-sized ships offering a more intimate experience with cutting-edge amenities and exquisite meals.
Four Seasons Hotel Cairo at Nile Plaza
“Clients [...] receive high levels of personal assistance in airports and elsewhere on the ground while travelling, [along with] the safety net, security and peace of mind that this provides,” assured Berry. Gebril on the other hand, believes that the boom in travellers requesting luxury tours can be attributed to the realisation that a journey in Egypt is a lifetime opportunity. “In a luxury tour we take care of every little detail for our clients to ensure they will have the best time,” stressed Gebril. EXCEEDING KNOWLEDGE These tours are generally intended for affluent and well-read individuals over the age of 40, with a solid educational background and wide travel experiences, explained Berry. According to Gebril, currently the US represents the largest fragment of his company’s clientele, as travellers from this specific segment tend to posses the maturity to grasp and value other cultures and have an increased appetite for new adventures. In line with Masson’s anticipations for a stable comeback of the industry, Berry insisted that demand for luxury tours is on the rise. “These types of tours are key to Egypt’s overall tourism business – they take travellers to some of Egypt’s key sites which the Egyptian government is keen to promote, rather than to just the beaches of the Red Sea,” he explained. Likewise, Gebril highlighted this type of travel as the most essential part of revenues generated by the sector. “[ Luxury tourism] is very important because it raises the bar and it shows that we are a force to be reckoned with. We are not merely a developing country, but rather a country that has been catering to tourists for more than 5,000 years. Whether culture and history tourists or leisure, beach and sand-seekers, they all went through here, and have experienced an unbelievable level of hospitality,” reassured Masson.

Millennial Travellers Are Key to Luxury Tourism
T
he management of Mazagan Beach & Golf Resort, Morocco, has pointed out that luxury tourism in North Africa should focus more on millennial family travellers as they hold significant spending power due to their idea of touring the world as part of their daily lives. According to United Nations, currently 200,000 million millennial tourists generate more than USD180 billion in annual tourism revenue, an increase of nearly 30 percent since 2007. “Millennial family travellers look at traveling as a crucial part of their lifestyle and luxury tourism should listen to their preferences and make best experiences available to them,” said Scott Lundahl, director, Mazagan Beach & Golf Resort.

London home to host The World’s 50 Best Restaurants awards,” commented Melanie de Souza, acting director, marketing and airline services, Visit Victoria.
Yet, she reminded that South Australia’s high-end offerings go well beyond this, highlighting hospitality gems like The Louise in the Barossa, hailed as Australia’s best-known wine region, and Arkaba, which is set in the spectacular landscapes of the Flinders Ranges.
“Hosting such a prestigious event as this provides us with yet another excellent opportunity to bring the world’s most influential food and wine people to Australia to inspire, inform and advocate our country’s world class food and wine scene,” added John O’Sullivan, managing director, Tourism Australia.
“All these properties offer outstanding bespoke touring options,” assured Sim, explaining that South Australia in general focusses on boutique and authentic travel experiences.
However, when it comes to prestigious events, it is not just Melbourne that bags the crème de la crème. Queensland’s Gold Coast is currently gearing up for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games, and The Star Entertainment Group has just recently unveiled refreshed plans for a mega-investment worth up to AUD850 million (USD654.3 million) which includes, among others, a six-star all-suite hotel. The master-plan concept also provides for future development options potentially worth multiple billions of dollars, with several hotel and apartment buildings, a recreational deck with water features, tropical gardens, pools and spa as well as entertainment facilities.
“We pride ourselves on luxury travellers being able to get closer to their passions. Whilst we certainly have some outstanding accommodation, it is often the personal experiences which take it to the next level – tasting premium wine directly out the barrel in the Barossa with the very winemaker who created it; undertaking a wildlife safari on Kangaroo Island with your very own naturalist guide; enjoying outstanding food and wine in the bush as the sun sets over the Flinders Ranges [and so on]. These are the types of experiences which bring luxury travellers to South Australia and continually surpass their expectations,”

Yet, it is not only the unostentatious and barefoot luxury experiences that appeal to globetrotters – it is also the destination’s urban glitz and glam. One such hub is Melbourne. “Greater Melbourne in particular is the best Australian destination for shopping [...], [as well as] fine dining, coffee, fine art, exciting entertainment and unique Australian attractions,” asserted André Jacques, director of sales and marketing, The Langham, Melbourne, also reminding that the city hosts some of the country’s most high-profile events, including the Australian Open Tennis Championship and The Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix. As a further testament to the destination’s MICE allure, the city has been selected to host the prestigious The World’s 50 Best Restaurants ceremony. “Melbourne is delighted to be only the second international city outside of its

domestic and international visitors will enjoy incredible facilities and entertainment in this integrated resort as it evolves over the years,” enthused, Tom Tate, mayor, City of Gold Coast. In other parts of the country, top industry stakeholders will flock to Sydney this month for the fifth edition of Luxperience to explore Australia’s luxury products firsthand – the popularity of which is confirmed by the fact that the event has been completely sold out despite a 19 percent increase in floor space. A special spotlight will be cast on the country’s MICE offerings through the dedicated The MICE MARKETPLACE. Meanwhile the Sydney Opera House (SOH) is set for an AUD202 million (USD151 million) revamp. “These renewal projects are designed to ensure the opera house continues to evolve, welcoming and inspiring people in as many ways as possible,” explained Louise Herron, CEO, SOH.

ELUSIVELY UNDERSTATED Switzerland has been a favourite among the world’s elite for decades, bestowing upon them the luxury of its picture-perfect scenery, opulent accommodation options and top-quality products. Yet, the country still shelters plenty of well-hidden gems.

“S
witzerland is world-famous for its chocolate, cheese and clocks; but look beyond the age-old clichés and there is even more to discover,” assured Marion Talbot, director, public relations, Grand Hotel Kempinski Geneva.
Mirroring her conviction was Laura Amanzi, director, marketing and communications, Park Hyatt Zurich, who stressed that even as a small country, Switzerland offers diverse opportunities to discover culture, events, dining, sports as well as various activities which are both unique and exclusive, perfectly fulfilling the needs of the world’s elite. The main challenge is that global travellers often know too little about the

destination, according to Nina Mueller, co-founder, Cosa Travel Switzerland, who further explained that for this very reason, unusual experiences are often overlooked by both tourists as well as tour operators. “Soft adventurers can do a walk on eternal ice, the glacier next to the Jungfraujoch, choosing the level of risk they want. A more challenging adventure can be some of the world’s best canyoning in Ticino, where you also find one of the clearest waters,” she enthused. “Very exquisite is also the opportunity to make the Jungfraujoch train stop where there is no stop, so guests can get out of the train and enter an old mining tunnel, walk through it and end up in the middle of the Eiger-Nordwand, where you have a spectacular view of the top of Europe which usually only the bravest climbers have,” shared some insider tips Mueller. For those looking for off-the-beaten-track gems, there are plenty of hidden secrets, insisted Mueller, listing natural underground lakes and a church built by acclaimed architect Mario Botta on the top of Monte Tamaro Mountain among the must-visit attractions. Yet, according to Astrid Heitz, director of sales and marketing, Le Grand Bellevue, today’s guests also seek authenticity in their travel experiences, thus, the hotel’s special fondue backpack and cheese making programmes with local farmers. Recognising guests’ desire for lifetime memories, W Verbier included a special treat for adrenaline-seekers in its winter programme – a chance to enjoy a ski or snowboard ride alongside world-class snowboarderÉEmilien Badoux, revealed Pierre-Henri Bovsovers, general manager, W Verbier. Family experiences with a slight educational input are also in demand, pinpointed Melanie Horn, director of sales and marketing, Gstaad Palace, adding that nevertheless, the country’s untouched natural beauty also remains a major drawcard. “Being amidst Switzerland’s most stunning and authentic mountain region makes Gstaad Palace also very popular for city dwellers and those who live in countries with much less healthy and natural resources,” she said. In line with this, Baur au Lac in Zürich now serves honey from its very own beehive. “The hive is housed in a mini version of the Baur au Lac and contains 80,000 Apis mellifera carnica bees […]. Because bees collect nectar and pollen from blossoms within a 5.6km radius of their hive, the honey harvested will be local Zurich honey that guests can enjoy with their breakfasts or buy at the hotel kiosk,” explained Carole Baumann, director of sales and marketing, Baur au Lac. Yet, it is not only the nature that makes Switzerland so alluring to travellers but also the high standards. “Since the beginning of this year we changed our service regulations,” said Amanzi, explaining that the hotel is now even more committed to offering personalised services. “Our staff is trained to behave authentic and to adapt to each guest and to each situation individually,” explained Amanzi. Similarly, Baur au Lac has introduced SuitePad Tablets, a digital concierge that provides a wide range of information and services.

The hotel also teamed up with Zurich Airport to provide bespoke experiences from the moment guests touch ground. Apart from adults, youngsters are also being pampered and at Gstaad Palace they are invited to enjoy a new playground made of natural wood, as Andrea Scherz, general manager, Gstaad Palace revealed. The property has also recently renovated its banqueting room for some CHF1.6 million (USD1.66 million). At Grand Hotel Villa Castagnola guests can benefit from with larger rooms, an enhanced wellness area and a new restaurant, disclosed Ivan Zorloni, general manager, Grand Hotel Villa Castagnola. Finally, when it comes to luxurious Swiss novelties, one cannot miss to mention the upcoming Grace St. Moritz, due to open in mid-2018. “In addition to a boutique hotel, [Grace St. Moritz] will also be an exclusive new residential address, which is extremely rare for St. Moritz. The hotel will offer 56 rooms and suites, including 17 private serviced apartments,” elucidated Marco Novella, chief operating officer, Grace Hotels. Mueller confirmed, “Switzerland is becoming more and more an upcoming destination for all markets; Arabs, Chinese, the US but also Europeans – there is so much to be discovered and so little has been seen.”

INTERVIEW WITH
Michal Zitek AREA GENERAL MANAGER, BANYAN TREE & ANGSANA LANG CO
As part of the Laguna Lang Co integrated resort project, Banyan Tree Lang Co and Angsana Lang Co play a crucial role in the overall tourism development of Central Vietnam. Here, Michal Zitek, area general manager, Banyan Tree & Angsana Lang Co, talks about the destination’s growth.
Travel Trade Luxury: What makes Hue Province particularly appealing to discerning travellers? Michal Zitek: Laguna Lang Co is the first integrated resort to be constructed in the Thua Tien Hue Province of Central Vietnam. As such it has played a pivotal role in expanding the reach of tourism in this region beyond the usual attractions. The area is increasingly popular with discerning travellers keen to explore the rich cultural history of Central Vietnam with luxurious benefits accorded through a pampering stay at Banyan Tree or the vibrant experience that is Angsana here. Thua Tien Hue Province is enjoying a resurgence in popularity […]. [However,] many of our guests simply arrive to just relax and enjoy the services [...]. Travel Trade Luxury: What attributes set the Banyan Tree and Angsana brands apart from other chains? Michal Zitek: The cornerstone of the Banyan Tree [mantra] is to provide a sanctuary for the senses of our guests. […] A strong factor in this is our focus on a sense of place. Banyan Tree prides itself on generating moods and experiences synonymous with the local environment in which each of our hotels and resorts operate. Here in Lang Co you will typically find traditional or modern Vietnamese elements paired with the highest international standards of service

and design. From the exquisite breakfast offerings, the theatre of our sundown rituals, and the unique locations of our destination dining themes, our guests will be able to savour the finest of service matched with the essential elements of Vietnamese culture. Angsana Lang Co also carries these features yet with an element of modernity and flair tailored to the traveller seeking a more energetic experience. Travel Trade Luxury: Which are your main markets? Michal Zitek: Initially the main markets for the resorts were derived from regional air accessibility with direct flights from Korea, Japan, Singapore, Bangkok and Hong Kong. As awareness about Lang Co continues to grow, we are finding increasing traffic through medium to longer haul markets. This year there has been a notable increase of business from Europe, Australia, GCC and even New Zealand as the frequency of direct and connecting flights continues to grow. With international connections through Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi as well as direct airlift through major international hubs such as Bangkok, Hong Kong as well as Singapore, the rest of the world is quickly starting to enjoy visiting Central Vietnam. Travel Trade Luxury: In your opinion, what are today’s high-end travellers looking for?
Michal Zitek: Luxury has become an individual expectation rather than a global brand standard. The high-end traveller of today still appreciates the finer things in life, yet also appreciates the nuance of a specific location, culture or experience. Social media has allowed each individual guest to present their own version of the story that any country can tell. It is important to be aware of this and then identify with the individual expectations [...]. A key component to our strategy in this area is the engagement of our villa and resort hosts in each resort. From the moment of the first reservation/pre-arrival, throughout the stay and then post-stay, we focus on the individuality of our guests and will do our utmost to customise their overall stay experience. Travel Trade Luxury: How do you see Vietnam’s luxury segment developing over the coming years? Michal Zitek: The luxury segment of Vietnam is certainly emerging at a rapid pace. With so many new openings each year it is evident that there is strong interest in Vietnam as a luxury destination that still represents a completely unique range of historical, cultural, culinary and natural experiences. The improvements in infrastructure, high-end attractions, transportation options – including helicopter services and private jet facilities – all assist to encourage the further development of the luxury segment.
