While experiential travel was the luxury trend of 2016, with affluent travellers looking for novel ways to be immersed in native cultures, this year is looking to be defined by transformational travel. While encompassing similar elements of experiential getaways, this year sees holidaymakers seeking much more. With a desire to shift perspective, reflect on one’s self, and delve more deeply into nature and culture, the travellers’ of today are looking for personal growth, in a world where one is increasingly disconnected from themselves, loved ones and environment. Ultimately, the inner journey is becoming just as important as the trip itself.

With its vibrancy, modernity, top-notch infrastructure and enviable geographical location, Istanbul is exceptionally well positioned as a place to do business. Pervin Zeydanli Yalazan, general manager, ICC, shares insights on how the city has turned into a world-embracing MICE destination.

Travel Trade Luxury: How important is the MICE sector to the ongoing success of Turkey’s tourism industry? Pervin Zeydanli Yalazan: MICE is a rising industry not only for Turkey but for many other countries in the world. Turkey is placing great emphasis on the economic gains and other benefits the MICE sector brings along. In addition to travellers visiting the country in order to enjoy the sea, sand and sun, as well as other types of tourism including medical and shopping, MICE fills in a great gap [...]. Travel Trade Luxury: In your opinion what makes Istanbul stand out as a MICE destination? Pervin Zeydanli Yalazan: Straddling Asia and Europe, Istanbul is a key hub which guarantees easy access and transport, while bringing together the colours and cultures from across the world in a pot of immense history and cultural heritage. Acting as a bridge between the east and the west, [...] Istanbul offers visitors unique meeting venues, from Ottoman palaces to pavilions on

the shores of the Bosporus. The country is only a few miles away from our guests, thanks to Turkish Airlines that flies to the highest number of destinations in the world. In Istanbul, one feels the history of 10,000 years in every corner above and under the ground. Transport within the city is not a hassle thanks to the bridges and submerged tunnels that bring together the two shores of the Bosporus strait. [...] Delicacies of the Turkish cuisine can be found at amazing cafĂŠs and restaurants in every corner. The city offers the most distinct examples of hospitality with its hotels, congress centres and air carrier. Istanbul becomes an inspiration and a habit for its guests. Travel Trade Luxury: How was 2016 in terms of events at ICC? Pervin Zeydanli Yalazan: 2016 was a great year for ICC as we scored higher yield and profitability rates compared to 2015. We hosted significant world-class events including the United Nations World Humanitarian Summit with 22,000 participants, the World Energy Congress, as well as the UNESCO World Heritage Congress. As

part of our projects, we host ACE of MICE, one of the most important exhibitions in this industry that take place in Turkey, and act as a partner for them. We put in our best efforts to strengthen our contacts and communication, while opening doors of collaboration among stakeholders. [...] Travel Trade Luxury: What do you see as the secret to running a successful MICE operation in such a globally competitive environment? Pervin Zeydanly Yalazan: In a globally competitive environment, the secret of running a successful MICE operation is a sustainable service approach, adaptation to evolving technologies, stability of service, quality and trust. A team, workforce and a mentality that can cater to changing customers and needs also play a significant role. We underline and highlight our positive strengths. Advances in the fields of agriculture, healthcare and technology can help both domestic and international players to have more meetings and events. That is why it is time to collaborate. We exert efforts to reinforce international collaboration.

Sabre Identified Future Luxury Trends According to Sabre Hospitality Solutions’ Future of Luxury Travel report, conducted in collaboration with TrendWatching, the definition of luxury travel is evolving, with highend travellers choosing subtle indulgence over conspicuous consumption. More than ever, affluent tourists are willing to give up the comfort of a resort stay for once-in-a-lifetime experiences that also require specialised training along with the premium price.

Other key trends were identified including luxury as a driver of wellness tourism, lowkey luxury, and indulgence without guilt. Sarah Kennedy Ellis, vice president, global marketing and digital experience, Sabre Hospitality Solutions, revealed, “We see guests moving beyond traditional ideas of status and embracing highly-bespoke travel opportunities that focus more on the individual traveller’s personality and values and less about expressing opulence.”
