ourism ministers, the Spanish authorities and private sector representatives, during FITUR attended a ministerial round table on tourism development in the MENA region focusing on the region’s current trends and short term prospects and policies and strategies for consolidating recovery and stepping up tourism’s contribution to inclusive and sustainable socioeconomic development. Opening the event, Zurab Pololikashvili, secretary general, UNWTO, commented, “[…] There are many reasons for optimism and I come into this meeting full of confidence for the region’s future. UNWTO forecasts point to MENA receiving 195 million international tourists by 2030.”

The numbers for December 2017 passenger traffic at Prince Mohammad bin Abdulaziz International Airport have been revealed showing an increase of 13 percent compared to the same month of 2016.

ccording to the latest statistics, air traffic recorded 731,845 passengers during December 2017, an increase of 13.3 percent, while aircraft movements recorded 5,035, increased by 13 percent. During 2017, 7.8 million passengers choose to fly to or from the airport, showing a rise of 19 percent and aircraft movements numbered 58,045, increasing seven percent over 2016 figures.

BEIRUT – RAFIC HARIRI AIRPORT INCREASES CARGO

B

eirut – Rafic Hariri International Airport released its operational results showing an increase of seven percent in passenger numbers and a 28 percent rise in cargo for November 2017, compared to the same month in 2016. The traffic detailed highlights include 592,782 passengers in number and 8,185 tonnes in cargo. Freight frequency reached 8,119 tonnes, with an increase of 28 percent while mail recorded a 60 percent increase with 65 tonnes. Overall, aircraft movements stood at 5,450, with an increase of 0.5 percent. Along with facilitating an improved passenger experience, Beirut-Rafic Hariri International Airport development seeks to elevate the quality of services across the its expanding network.

MEA HOTELS MARKET REVIEW Despite successfully recording growth across a number of revenue departments, hotels in the Middle East and Africa (MEA) suffered a 1.8 percent year-on-year drop in GOPPAR.

W

hilst hotels in the regions effectively recorded a 2.3 percentage point increase in room occupancy in November 2017, to 71.6 percent, which was the second highest occupancy recorded in the region in 2017, this was completely cancelled out by a 4.7 percent decline in achieved average room rate. As a result, RevPAR for hotels in MEA fell by 1.4 percent to USD135.08 in November 2017, according to the latest worldwide poll of full-service hotels from HotStats.

For the eighth consecutive year, the Sharjah Light Festival will illuminate the emirate from February 07 – 17. The world’s most acclaimed light festival combines local talent and internationally renowned artists. The festival yearly attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors who come to be astonished by the specially composed music, artistic ingenuity and technical skills of the masters who curate the stunning illuminations onto the beautiful architecture of Sharjah. Eye-opening displays of colour, images and lights are inspired by a variety of subjects such as beauty, science, creativity and knowledge. Sharjah Light Festival is a highly anticipated event as each year it takes the advancements of technology and transforms them with an elegant touch into something aweinspiring.

Programme Sharjah Light Festival 2018

The opening show will take place at the Dr. Sultan Al Qasimi Centre for Gulf Studies, an institution providing historical and geographic information about the development of the gulf. The video mapping show, curated by Mathieux Felix, titled Monoliths Landing in Sharjah will astonish with magnificent towers of lights illuminating the structural details of this most important icon of Sharjah’s architecture. At the Sharjah University City, in the aptly named show Knowledge Avenue the beautiful long avenue of Sharjah University City is festooned with millions of LED pixel lights in an astonishing tribute to education and the heroes of the future. As many of the emirate’s premier educational institutions are situated on this boulevard, it is literally an avenue of enlightenment. Also in this area is an exciting new venue for SLF, the Sharjah Police Academy. This building offers an unusual canvas for the light artist, Laurent Langlois – three facades to illuminate. The buildings are painted with intriguing motifs and symbols that pay honour to the history and disciplines of the emirate in Variations of Pictorial Compositions. The University City Hall show Sunrise gives the viewer a sophisticated look at representation of time and the constantly evolving universe. The second cluster is a group of shows presented in Sharjah’s Heart of Sharjah, the evocative heritage area of the emirate. The largest restoration project in the region is already attracting visitors in their thousands and generating revenue. The area features a boutique hotel, restaurants, retail shops, art galleries, markets and museums, many of which will be housed in the renovated traditional houses of the influential tradespeople and intellectuals of the area in the 1950s. For SLF, the ancient towers in the area will be painted in

lights and monumental projections combining music and movement while the façade of the 200 year old Al Hisn Fort takes on a new mantle as a canvas for a show from artist Gilbert Coudène portraying primitive man’s discovery of fire and the journey of light through time. The third cluster takes place along the emirate’s enticing waterfront, a key focus area in recent years with a large leisure development, offering world class restaurants and cafes, a splash park and mini golf, all overlooking the wide sweep of Sharjah’s famous Khalid Lagoon. Sharjah’s beautiful Masjid Al Noor is situated here and for the duration of the light festival, will awe viewers with a poetic programme carefully curated to celebrate the Mosque’s architectural details. Most dramatic is the show which allows the Lagoon itself to take centre stage, conceived by master artist Nicholas Gautier, powerful beams will sweep out, mimicking a carousel, spinning and dancing over the water.

Sharjah has a number of projects in planning which focus on the further outreaches. The captivating East Coast has become a centre for sustainable tourism practices with the launch of the largest eco-tourism project in the area. Meanwhile, SCTDA has recently opened a new tourism office in the Khorfakkan area and this area has also seen a boom due to new shipping and cruise services, as well as investment in a number of tourism infrastructure projects. Furthermore, plans are afoot to launch a massive safari park in the Al Dhaid region as well as a number of other expansion projects. SLF 18 will see a number of the important societal and historical buildings of these areas transformed. Al Hamriyah Town Municipality building which will display projections celebrating the dramatic bird of the UAE, the falcon, in an enigmatic, colourful show by Esther Megard. Dibba Grand Masjid will be the canvas for a show in which nature is lauded as an architect and the natural treasures of the world shown as invaluable resources. The natural light displays of the world, such as the Aurora Borealis are mimicked to dramatic effect in Chromatic Lights at Masjid Ammar bin Yasser.

AMIDST A NATIONAL TOURISM STRATEGY (NTS) AIMING TO DOUBLE THE NUMBER OF INTERNATIONAL TOURIST ARRIVALS BY 2020, OMAN CONTINUES TO DIVERSIFY ITS OFFERING SHOWCASING ITS UNIQUE CULTURAL HERITAGE AND DIVERSE SHOPPING OPPORTUNITIES.

O

man’s historical and cultural wealth, including four UNESCO World Heritage Sites, plays a key role in effort’s to diversify the country’s tourism product. The four World Heritage Sites, namely Aflaj Irrigation Systems of Oman, the archaeological sites of Bat, Al-Khutm and Al-Ayn, Bahla Fort, and Land of Frankincense, are regularly cited by local tourism stakeholders as must-see places to visit. Souvenirs from these locations also make up a significant portion of the diverse selection of products to purchase while visiting Oman’s traditional souks and modern shopping malls. TOURISM IMPACT According to WTTC’s Travel & Tourism Economic Impact report on the country for 2017, travel and tourism’s direct contribution to Oman’s GDP reached 3.2 percent in 2016 when total contribution stood at 7.3 percent. WTTC indicated that direct contribution in 2017 was forecast to rise 8.1 percent and to increase six percent per annum to OMR3,716.4 million (USD9,665.4 million) or 3.9 percent of total GDP by 2027. WTTC also noted travel and tourism directly supported 75,000 jobs (3.4 percent of total employment) in 2016 but this was expected to fall 2.6 percent in 2017 and rise 3.8 percent per annum to reach 106,000 jobs or 4.5 percent of total employment by 2027. Areas of natural interest in the country’s mountains and deserts, existing tourist spots, such as the Musandam peninsula in the north and the frankincense trail in Salalah, as well as deep-rooted cultural areas throughout the capital city have been earmarked for development. The first stage, between 2016 to 2020, aims at adding 5,620 new hotel rooms and generate 76,384 direct jobs. The second phase, between 2021 and 2030, will bring the total number of hotel rooms to 15,419 and create 126,900 more direct jobs; while the third will see hotel room supply rise to 29,596 and direct employment for another 242,900 people created between 2031 and 2040, according to Oxford Business Group. According to this report, the NTS plan is estimated to cost around OMR13.48 billion (USD35 billion,) with the government aiming to attract 88 percent of this investment from the private sector. All indicating that many private sector stakeholders reported a good 2017 and a positive outlook for this year. POSITIVE OUTLOOK Darren Darwin, general manager, Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar Resort, noted that 2017 had seen the completion of their first full year of operation and had been a huge success. James Hewitson, general manager, Al Baleed Resort Salalah by Anantara, is also pleased with his venue’s first year after it opened in November 2016. Also concurring, Hossam Kamal, general manager, Salalah Rotana Resort, indicated that his venue experienced multi-level success in 2017, and this year expects continuous growth in guests’ arrivals. Visitors to Oman come around the region and the world with Darwin reporting an increase in guests from Russia, India and China over the past years, thanks to the introduction of a more simplified visa process. Germany is cited by Kamal as a significant feeder market, closely followed by Italy, Poland and Slovakia. Hewitson noted, “From around June to September is our famous monsoon season known as Khareef, where the cooler temperatures and misty weather attract those wanting to escape the heat of the rest of the Middle East. The precipitation during Khareef, also leads way to some of the most beautiful landscapes of lush, green mountains, flowing rivers and waterfalls. From September to May, we are fortunate to have near perfect weather, which has attracted a lot of European visitors looking for beach and sun.” Most agree that the GCC and Europe remain their main focus. According to Oman’s National Centre of Statistics & Information, in 2013, the most recent year for which official figures are available, GCC nationals accounted for 793,466 of the 2,121,229 total inbound tourists, Asians for 435,067 and Europeans for 371,741. 

of Ubar show that preserving these types of heritage sites remains a focus of the overall tourism objectives, Hewitson added. Supporting this, Kamal noted Oman’s ministry of tourism, in collaboration with the culture stakeholders, has organised a series of related workshops and seminars and effort was being made to educate guests on what not to do when visiting sites. Nuno Neves, cluster general manager, Park Inn by Radisson Muscat, Park Inn by Radisson Hotel & Residence Duqm noted that it was important for new generations, like millenials, to have a sense of the past. MUST-SEE SITES Stakeholders also have plenty ideas on what visitors should be sure to see. Darwin suggests guests climb to the top of the ancient city of Nizwa for a bird’s-eye view of the crenulated roofs of what was once a centre for trade and Islamic studies.

HERITAGE SITES Stakeholders agree on the importance of Oman’s heritage sites within its tourism offering, wherever visitors are coming from. Darwin noted travellers are increasingly looking to experience new culture, adventure and authentic experiences as part of their holidays and Oman’s rich heritage and stunning mountainous terrain certainly appeals to the intrepid traveller and helps Oman stand out amongst other popular tourist destinations in the region. Hewitson mentioned that his resort is directly next to Al Baleed Archaeological Park and Museum of the Land of Frankincense, adding Salalah’s history was rooted in the frankincense trade which can be retraced through the various archaeological ruins and tells one of the area’s most interesting stories. Kamal suggested the UNESCO sites serve as a unique selling point, something also supported by Nader Batniji, director of sales and marketing, Radisson Blu Hotel, Sohar, who said the sites give the Sultanate an edge over and above neighbouring countries in attracting and boosting cultural and ecotourism. Hewitson added that he believes what makes Oman so special, is that the culture is still so alive through the people and, of course, the preservation of dedicated sites and traditional architecture. “While other destinations in the Middle East have developed at a rapid pace, Oman still emulates the true spirit of Arabia.” He added that the government and tourism and culture stakeholders recognise this, and are dedicated to the restoration and maintenance of the country’s archaeological gems, such as castles, forts and mosques. The addition of new visitor centres at Sumhuram archaeological site and the Lost City

There is also an opportunity to delve into the local way of life by visiting the locations fascinating souk, renowned for its Friday cattle auction, and ornamental silver jewellery. The Bahla Fort and Birkat Al-Mouz provide insight into ancient Omani settlements, exhibiting examples of the water engineering skill of the early inhabitants for agricultural and domestic purposes, Darwin said. Birkat Al-Mouz boasts the Aflaj Irrigation system, a central component of Omani history, which has allowed life to flourish in the otherwise arid desert environment. Jabal Shams, translated as the Sun Mountain, is the highest point in the GCC, at just over 3,000 m and is perfect for the more active explorer, boasting impressive views of Wadi A'Nakhr Gorge, which has been labelled, The Grand Canyon of Arabia, suggested by Darwin. Hewitson proposed the Museum of the Land of Frankincense for its collection of artefacts that paint a vivid picture of Oman’s long historical legacy and maritime heritage. Kamal noted Salalah is also known as the land of frankincense. This was a major export from the region in the past. The ancient trade route can be learnt from a visit to the Al Baleed Museum which is part of the Land of Frankincense UNESCO world heritage site. Other areas of interest include Khor Rori, Wadi Dawka, and Wubar which are key areas of frankincense harvest. Lastly, Kamal suggests Samharam port, which is located east of Salalah in the region located between Taqah and Mirbat. It acquired fame and significance in ancient times as the jars of Omani frankincense bound to Balqees the Queen of Sheba were loaded from Samharam Port. Neves, referencing Oman’s tourism ministry slogan, Beauty has an address, recommends the Muttrah Souq, Nizwa Port, the Rock Garden in Duqm famous for rock formations and Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque. SHOPPER’S DELIGHT A trip is never complete with a little shopping for local delights and souvenirs. Darwin suggests visitors make a stop at Nizwa Souk, steeped in history and renowned for its silver jewellery, which is considered to be the best in the country, in particular, it’s intricate hand-carved Khanjars (curved tribal daggers), which feature distinctive style and patterns. Copper ware, coffee pots, swords, leather goods, pottery can also be purchased here, along with local fruits, vegetables, spices, meat and fish. Those visiting between March and May can experience the beauty of Damask roses in bloom and discover everything there is to know about the rose water of Al Jabal Al Akhdar, visit a traditional distillery and purchase the area’s famous Rose Potion. The frankincense Salalah is known for, is another must, according to Hewitson, available in actual resin or products from soaps and oils to edible products like gum and mouthwash. GLIMPSE OF THE FUTURE To pave the way to a successful future, Kuwaiti government created the Kuwait National Development Plan setting the nation’s long-term development priorities, aiming for a position within the top 35 percent of countries by 2035. The expansion of Kuwait International Airport is one of the biggest developments of the plan which contributes in attracting more tourists by converting the destination into a financial centre where the airport will turn into a hub for attracting passengers around the world. At a cost of KWD1,4 billion (USD4,6 billion), the airport will accommodate approximately 25 million passengers. As revealed by the World Travel & Tourism Council, Kuwait has seen an increase in leisure travel spending in comparison with the previous decade and these numbers are expected to rise even more by 2035, with the country’s National Development Plan in force. To experience water in a more amusing way, there is a range of water sports available including windsurfing, boating, water-skiing and scuba diving, where their only requirement is to just rent or buy the equipment needed. Among these sports yachting is also available since Kuwait is considered to be the sailor’s paradise. Just like all the other sea clubs, the yacht club has an organised marina with about 300 fully serviced berths, where sailing activities are organised. The Kuwait Offshore Sailing Association makes the yachting experience more appealing by organising a number of races throughout the year. Annual pearl diving festivals are organised in order to help the new generation to experience the hardship and this specialised pearl diving. During the dive, the divers are secured to the railing of the ship with a rope tied around their waist, once they reach the surface; they tug on the rope, signalling the helpers to pull them back. The end of these festivals is celebrated by singing and dancing. WHERE CULTURE BLOOMS Even though Kuwait showcases a large range of business opportunities, it is one of the richest countries in terms of culture and heritage. Kuwaiti popular culture, in the form of theatre, radio, music, and television soap opera, flourishes and is even exported to neighbouring states, with a minimum of 15 television series produced annually. Kuwait is known for its home-grown tradition of theatre, having the oldest modern arts movement in the Arabian Peninsula and being the birthplace of various popular musical genres, such as sawt. Kuwait International Trade Fair is hosted every January in Mishref and it is said to be the leading trade expo for household consumables and home supplies industry in the country. UAE Ministry of Economy in its Annual Economic Report 2016 released a statement that noted that Arab countries were expected to record an economic growth of 3.1 percent in 2017, in the light of expectations that the world economic activity will recover. UAE Schools to Benefit from Expo 2020 Expo 2020 Dubai has launched the Sustainability Champions programme for all schools across the UAE. Taking place in collaboration with the ministries of climate change and environment and the education, the programmes aims at creating a lasting renewable energy legacy for the nation. WTTC Calls for Public Sector Collaboration Implementation of biometric technology to facilitate secure borders is the single biggest opportunity for the travel and tourism sector this year, according to Gloria Guevara Manzo, president, World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC). Manzo also highlighted the importance of developments in artificial intelligence and machine learning, virtual and augmented reality and changing demographics, particularly the coming of age of millennials and growth of Generation Z, for travel and tourism. Speaking at the ninth Exceltur Tourism Leadership Forum in Madrid, Manzo said, “Biometric technology has been evolving over many years and we have seen gradual implementation across the sector for some time. However, in order for the step change which needs to happen to improve security and create jobs through increased tourism flows, there is an urgent need to speed up implementation.”

Pledge to Reduce Food Waste in the UAE

Multiply Marketing Consultancy’s initiative, #FoodNotTrash received overwhelming support from many communities, organisations, radio shows, influencers and humanitarian organisations. The campaign aimed to heighten awareness of food waste in the UAE and beyond. The initiative, launched in May 2017, was inspired by The Year of Giving which was declared by H.H. JAMAL ABDULLA has assumed the position of cluster general manager of Millennium Al Aqeeq and Millennium Taiba Hotels of Millennium Hotels & Resorts. Abdulla brings over 20 years of experience in the Saudi Arabian market. Prior to joining Millennium Hotels & Resorts, Abdulla was the managing director for the Five Stars Hotel Division with Mohammed Ali Al Swailem Group and has also worked for Hyatt Hotels Corporation, Accor Hotels and Wyndham Hotels and Resorts. The new cluster general manager will be responsible for guiding the overall direction and strategic priorities of the hotels, ensuring hotel revenue targets are met whilst delivering an excellent guest and member experience.

THOMAS KROOSWIJK has been appointed as hotel manager of Four Seasons Hotel Amman. Prior to joining the team in Amman, Krooswijk was the hotel manager at Four Seasons Hotel Toronto since April 2015. However, his career with the hotel brand started back in 2001 in New York, and he then joined the team in Dublin. He left the company to experience other opportunities in the hospitality industry but rejoined the team back in 2012 at Beverly Wilshire. In his new role, he will be responsible for overseeing and managing the day-to-day operations at the property in Amman.

Fashion and Beauty Park Success

H

undreds of visitors enjoyed Doha Festival City’s first Fashion and Beauty Park, a pop up event designed to guide visitors through their fashion and beauty woes. The Fashion and Beauty Park is an interactive area, where visitors can attend beauty and fashion workshops within different themes. The first event, held January 10 – 13, was packed with fashion and beauty advice including one-on-one styling sessions with image consultant Elisabeth Reis. Reis hosted a workshop focused on dressing for your colour and body type, while visitors also had access to fashion and beauty styling sessions at Festival City’s Color Closet and Beauty Box facilities. Another fashion-oriented event followed from January 17 – 20, namely Work Closet, while Bridal/Evening Wear/Cocktail clothing was the focus from January 24 – 27.
