TUI Academy to Educate Youngsters on Tourism

AITO Investigates Online Hotel Booking Sites

T

A

UI Care Foundation and Plan International have teamed up to bring education and employment opportunities in tourism to young people in the Dominican Republic. Together, the two organisations have launched the TUI Academy. Through this initiative 150 disadvantaged youngsters will receive a one-year training course preparing them for work in the field of tourism, including an internship at Blue Diamond resorts where, among other things, they will be coached by experienced practitioners. Furthermore, a top-up educational programme will be offered as well as certificates from INFOTEP, the official Dominican institute for vocational training. To support their first steps in the tourism industry, TUI Academy graduates are given working contracts of at least six months in duration.

s of October 27, the Association of Independent Tour Operators (AITO) welcomed the investigation, undertaken by the Competition & Markets Authority (CMA) into the trading practices of the online hotel booking sites. Derek Moore, chairman, AITO, highlighted how these sites have seen growth over the last five years and explained that CMA’s investigation will interrelat behaviour, and will be submitting its members’ views on how their big-company trading practices affect both enterprises and consumers. “Such online hotel booking sites, largely controlled by American interests, have seen exponential growth over the last five years. They now control virtually the entire market in hotel reservations, and it is estimated that 80 percent of all hotel bookings in Europe are made through online hotel booking sites. It seems that many online brands across Europe are in fact now owned by just two or three of the main US-controlled players,” further indicated Moore.
