MONTHLY NEWS CHA: Cyprus Needs to Become Competitive

Paralimni Marina Announced

T

o achieve the tourism industry’s main goals, less bureaucracy and increased flexibility and effectiveness are crucial, according to Haris Loizides, president, Cyprus Hotel Association (CHA), who underlined the need to further improve the island’s competitiveness. “We must draft a new national tourism strategy, but this time we need to go beyond the design stage and be efficient in its implementation too. We lack the proper conditions and procedures that will allow us to materialise everything that we commit to,” reiterated Loizides, urging the government to support the tourism industry which contributes more than EUR2 billion annually to the national economy.

T

he Ministry of Energy, Commerce, Industry and Tourism proclaimed a public tender seeking a strategic investor for the development of the Paralimni marina. Intended to enhance Cyprus’ position on the nautical and yachting map, enrich tourism services and establish the country as an all-year-round destination, the facility will have a capacity of around 300 yachts. The operator will be given the option of building housing and commercial developments, with the aim of enhancing the project’s attractiveness and viability. The term of the license agreement will be 125 years and the marina will be declared an official port of entry to Cyprus.

PwC Urges Hotels to Focus on Sustainability

T

he most urging challenges faced by the local hotel sector were at the top of the agenda at PWC’s recently organised educational seminar in Limassol. The firm’s research supports that this approach not only boosts employment and generates revenue for local communities, but also helps limit the negative consequences on the environment, culture and the local society. Petros Petrakis, partner, hospitality and leisure, PwC, commented, “We […] have shared basic knowledge on the hotel industry with local and other stakeholders as well as industry professionals, providing them with the opportunity to become better informed, benefitting themselves but also the Cyprus hotel industry’s broader potential for growth.”

At a later stage, PwC took over the project and was tasked with developing a strategy that would encourage tourists to spend more time and money outside their hotel. The consultancy firm has undertaken the task to raise awareness amongst tourists of the unique Cypriot experiences available in the coastal town, and as a result Destination Pafos was born. The initiative aims to accredit local businesses and help them maximise their offer and promote their product more

“Tourist spend outside the hotel can make a significant contribution to local economies [...]. In Paphos, there is a need to ensure customers know what the local area has to offer, and to support local businesses to access the tourism market. Collaboration between the different tourism stakeholders in Paphos is key to achieving this and we are delighted that 10 all-inclusive hotels and 30 local businesses, including restaurants, cafes and shops are involved. Businesses wishing to participate in the scheme are expected to meet a set of realistic criteria specifically developed for this purpose, following which they are awarded the Destination Pafos label which can be displayed at their premises, enabling tourists to identify and locate shops, restaurants and other establishments that offer authentic Cypriot products and experiences. Another step that PwC initiated was the training of front office staff from 10 all-inclusive hotels in Paphos who in turn educated four of their own colleagues, becoming tourism ambassadors for their respective properties and equipping them with the knowledge to introduce guests to the real Cyprus. The programme contained information on local products and experiences and helped participants understand the importance of the destination and establish a common vision that can benefit the whole Paphos region. Our ultimate goal is to expand this initiative across Cyprus and contribute to efforts to increase the positive impact of tourism to the local economy and local businesses around the country.
