ear-end figures at the island’s international airports are expected to exceed all previous numbers. The airfields’ management company Hermes Airports, anticipates that Larnaka International Airport and Pafos International Airport will have handled approximately 8.5 million passengers by December 31. The positive forecast is based on the encouraging statistics of the first half of the year, when arrivals to the island showed a 15.9 percent surge. During the peak season in mid-August, more than half a million customers flew on over 3,600 flights at Larnaca and Paphos’ airports, with the biggest boost having been recorded in the volume of Russian, British and Greek guests. According to the management of Hermes Airports, the historic record underscores the past years’ service improvements at the entry points, which have ultimately helped to enhance Cyprus’ tourism sector.

Cyprus Weather Rated World’s Second Best
I
n InterNations’ annual Expat Insider survey, Cyprus was declared as having the second best weather and climate in the world, with 69 percent of expatriates rating it as very good. Other criteria that were reviewed positively included personal safety, making new friends and feeling at home in the local culture. Some 21 percent of respondents reported to be completely satisfied with their social circle on the island, compared to the global average of 15 percent. Malte Zeeck, CEO, InterNations, commented, “It is clear to see from the survey results that depending on expats’ origins, they do not necessarily prioritise hard factors, such as safety and job security, over soft factors, such as the weather and climate, before moving to another country.”

The first of 12 sculptures to be placed around Kato Paphos include a geometric marble installation named Views of Infinity by Harry Paspallis, Poppy by Andreas Paraskevas and Sol Alter by Yiota Ioannidou, a figure of Aphrodite clinging to a rock. PCCI Demands a Cleaner Paphos
I
n light of the increased demand for regional hotels and leisure facilities, the Paphos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI) appealed to local authorities for relevant actions to maintain the overall cleanliness and sophistication of the city’s beach and tourist areas. A heightened need for establishing permanent disposal sites of organic materials such as algae has been highlighted, in order to avoid rising costs, unnecessary inconvenience and fire hazards. Partly, this necessity stems from the accumulation of algae on the shores, which regardless of it signifying clean waters, is not perceived favourably by visitors. According to PCCI, a professional approach to the above issue can help to maintain the best possible image of Paphos.

to specialised organisations with longstanding experience in providing such services. An open call contest will be announced to select the company that will be contracted, with the overall procedure being conducted by the airports’ management group, Hermes Airports. During the bid’s term-setting phase, both the Department of Civil Aviation and Cyprus Police will have the capacity to state their views and demands. Therefore, any future statements from individuals or groups regarding [the government] trying to privatise more sectors, will not be considered valid. What we are trying to achieve is to maximise the level of security through a thorough study that has been implemented. It is much easier to exert control over a private company which is merely held by a contract under which all terms of control will be foreseen and included. […] The duties that will be allocated to the private company will involve
anything that has to do with baggage control, while passport and travel document control will remain the duties of the police authority. National security matters of airports and their countries will remain the police authority’s responsibilities. The company’s duties will include cargo safety, mail control, overview of food supply on flights and the control of vehicles entering the airfield’s premises. On the other hand, everything that relates to passport control, order and security, traffic monitoring and the conduction of screening of individuals passing through the airport as well as prevention and management of crises, remains the police authority’s area of control. Upon approval from the Central Committee of Changes and Demands, 58 police members will become available to be used for the enhancement of airport and national security. TRAVEL TRADE CYPRUS: How would you describe your clientele? GEORGE DIOGENOUS: We do offer a unique experience to both international as well as domestic visitors. Our objective is to make our visitors feel at home and relax from the stresses of modern day life. Our main markets are couples, families or groups who enjoy peace and privacy and want to explore the traditions of Cyprus. Lofou village is one of the most scenic and unspoilt areas of Cyprus and can SEPTEMBER 2016
GEORGE DIOGENOUS: Each of our six studio apartments have been elegantly and stylishly decorated and designed to provide all of the modern amenities and conveniences needed for the guests’ comfort and relaxation during their stay. All studios are autonomous and have their own bathroom, living room and fully-equipped kitchen. Airconditioning, LED TV, DVD player, safe box, freezer and fridge are also provided in each of our six studios. The fireplace is an extra asset that five of our studios have. Another great detail is that each room has a selection of all time classic movies and books to keep our guests company. There is an array of outdoor activities, such as visiting the historical monuments and churches of the village, walking along the beautiful nature paths, visiting local taverns to experience authentic Cypriot cuisine, traditional coffee shops, fishing near Kouris dam or hiking in Troodos that is close to the village. […] TRAVEL TRADE CYPRUS: Please tell us about your recent projects. GEORGE DIOGENOUS: The property has recently welcomed to its family a lovely reception, a room that we did not have until now. We are now able to have onsite staff that can help and provide maintenance to our guests at all times. Currently we are renovating the bathrooms of our two studios named Archontico and Anogeio. We will place Jacuzzis in both bathrooms and we will decorate it in such a way, as to make you feel something extraordinary. When it comes to our guests, relaxation is our main objective, so we really emphasise on how to achieve it. The property is also undergoing the construction of two new rooms, which we plan to have ready by June 2017. Both rooms will have mountain views and will share a little private courtyard. Paying attention to the design and detail, we promise to offer something exceptional. A Jacuzzi in front of the fireplace is something that we are certain our guests will love, and we are really looking forward to introducing it in 2017. Something else that we are currently working on is the construction of a horse riding club.
Oinoessa Traditional Boutique Guest Houses, Lofou
Guests will have the opportunity to go for a ride and learn how to ride a horse with one of the leading instructors of Greece who we are very happy to have on our team. TRAVEL TRADE CYPRUS: Cyprus is often seen as a sun-sea-sand destination. In your opinion, how important is it to showcase other aspects of the island in order to further enhance the destination’s image? GEORGE DIOGENOUS: Indeed. Cyprus is well-known and most preferred for its beautiful beaches and year-round sun. Fortunately, Cyprus’ beauty does not stop there. There is a lot more to explore and visit on the island that will take your breath away. The Troodos mountain and the villages around it [for example] all have something different to offer. Lofou, for instance, stands out because of the unique architecture, its narrow mazed structure and its local cuisine – keeping Cypriot traditions alive. TRAVEL TRADE CYPRUS: Please tell us about your long-term plans. GEORGE DIOGENOUS: Oinoessa has been accommodating guests since 2013. Every day we work on improving our offerings. […] We are planning on making our properties as green as possible, offering only organic food and drinks, soaps and so on. We are also in the making of creating an organic garden that all our guests will be able to visit during their stay. Our long-term plan, except from the expansion of our property, is to keep our standards high and continue to make our guests as happy as possible when visiting the beautiful unspoilt village of Lofou.
