A

nastasiades is the first ever president of Cyprus to make an official visit to Saudi Arabia. Expanded talks between both delegations of the two countries followed the meeting which took place on January 03, and bilateral agreements were subsequently signed by government ministers accompanying the president. Specifically, an agreement for the avoidance of double taxation and the prevention of tax evasion with regards to income taxation, an executive programme in civil aviation, and a Memorandum of Understanding on political consultations between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of the two countries was signed.

RECORD TOURIST ARRIVALS REVEALED Tourists arrivals reached 144,676 in November 2017 compared to 124,192 in November 2016, recording an increase of 16.5 percent, and also marking the highest volume of tourist arrivals in Cyprus during the month, a passenger survey revealed.

or the period of January–November 2017 arrivals of tourists totalled 3,553,149 compared to 3,098,604 in the corresponding period of 2016, recording an increase of 14.7 percent and outnumbering total arrivals ever recorded in Cyprus. Travellers from the UK increased by 18.4 percent in November 2017 compared to November 2016, while an increase of 21,4 percent was recorded for Russian tourists. Increases were also recorded from Germany by 0.5 percent and Israel by 27,2 percent. However, a decrease of 6,1 percent in tourist arrivals from Greece was also recorded.

Millions Spent to Protect the Environment Cyprus' Statistical Service carried out a survey that revealed the total expenditure for public sector environmental protection and resource management activities in 2015 was estimated at EUR109 million.

T

his corresponds to 0.61 percent of GDP, compared to 0.46 percent in 2014. In 2015, total current expenditure reached EUR58.7 million while investment expenditure amounted to EUR50.3 million. Furthermore, the subsidies or transfers given by the public sector for environmental protection purposes exceeded those received by EUR25.3 million. For the environmental domain, 37.5 percent of total expenditure had been utilised to finance the monitoring, treatment and disposal of solid waste, while the protection of biodiversity and landscapes used 29.4 percent, and wastewater treatment was 21.5 percent.

yprus Tourism Organisation (CTO), participated at the 20th annual International Golf Travel Market (IGTM) in Cannes, held between December 11 – 14, 2017. The Cyprus IGTM exhibit stand, branded Cyprus In Your Heart also included the island’s four golf courses, Aphrodite Hills, Eléa, Minthis Hills, and Secret Valley - as well as hotels which host golf visitors. According to CTO, great interest was expressed by both existing and new golf tour operators to promote the island and include Cyprus in golf holiday packages and golf tournaments. Enhanced connectivity with new direct winter flights to Cyprus is also expected to attract golfers, not only from mature key markets but also new ones such as Ireland.

Nicosia Hoping to be Crowned European Youth Capital 2021

W

ith the aim to establish Nicosia as the European Youth Capital 2021, Greater Nicosia 2021 is organising several events to encourage Cyprus' youngsters to showcase their skills and talents. Greater Nicosia 2021 also inaugurated a logo competition where everyone could take place via the team’s website. The three participating municipalities include Nicosia,

Strovolos and Aglantzia. Members of the team include Spyros Pisinos, managing director and Diomidis Koufteros, director. The European Youth Capital award is rewarded to one city every year allowing it to take advantage of its youngsters, in terms of political, cultural, social, economical and business participation. If Nicosia wins the award it will be able to benefit from economical advantages, as well as the prestigous rewards title.

Ayia Napa Port Reveals New Sculpture

A

The Sculpture reflects on the region's past

project titled Fish, crafted by Ukrainian artists Yuri and Lyudmyla Mysko has been decorated on the interior of the Ayia Napa Port roundabout. The imposing sculpture of 2.8 m, completed during Ayia Napa's Fifth Sculpture Symposium, is made of white marble from Kavala, Greece and has given the space a special aesthetic, representing local inhabitants, where most of them were known to be fishermen in the past. Yannis Karousos, mayor, Ayia Napa, said, "We have set a goal, that the works created under the two phases of the Fifth Symposium, mainly from white marble of Kavala, should be placed outside the sculpture park in various parts of the city so that we create new reference points in our municipality."

yprus Tourism Organisation, in cooperation with Larnaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and Larnaka Tourism Board successfully carried out workshops with enterprises from the catering industry and sales companies that provide local food products. The December 12, 2017 event took place in the framework of the Creation and Pilot Implementation of

the Cyprus Gastronomy Sign, which is part of the Package of Promotion and Enrichment of Tourism Product to Expand the Tourist Period project. The workshops presented the feasibility and benefits of the deal, with particular emphasis on the criteria that each category of business should satisfy to certify and eventually obtain the Taste Cyprus Delightful Journey’s mark.

Excavation Season Produces New Results

C

yprus' Department of Antiquities of the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works, announced the results of 2017's excavation season at Agios Sozomenos, The excavations lasted from September 11 – October 27, 2017 and focused on the Nikolides plateau, so as to investigate the fort. During the second half of the season, a new excavation was initiated at Ampelia, where in the 2016 survey, walls were noted on the surface as well as large quantities of pithos sherds. This year’s excavations aimed at investigating the structures of Nikolides and Ampelia, their chronological span and function.

Polis Chrysochous and Latchi Upgrades

N

ew developments are expected to be carried out throughout the year in Polis Chrysochous and Latchi. The creation of a park in Latchi is expected to be completed in July. The EUR390 thousand investment will include green spaces, treadmills, recreational kiosks, gymnastics, and lighting which will be provided by an integrated photovoltaic system. Meanwhile, in the upgrading of its image, the municipality of Polis Chrysochous aims to design various projects such as creating the aesthetic image of visitor signposts, with an investment of EUR3.4 million. Finally, the municipality has asked the architects to submit proposals either to repair the existing Municipal Market or to demolish the existing facilities and create a new one with a different visual image, or to provide other suggestions.

Sports Trainers attend AGO Seminar

lose to 100 Sports For All (Athlitismos Gia Olous – AGO) programme, trainers recently had the opportunity to learn new skills at an annual seminar. The 95 coaches, between December 21 – 22, 2017, convened at Kition Sports Centre in Larnaca. They learnt about exercise for people with musculoskeletal ailments from trainer Christos Georgiades, kids athletics from trainer Kyriacos Kyriacou, and managing children with problematic behavior from

psychologist Despo Themistocleous. Speaking at the event, Tassos Prokopiou, board member, Cyprus Sports Organisation (KOA), commented, "The Sports For All programme completely fits in with KOA’s strategy for the promotion of sports for the masses. As an organisation, we place great importance on the ongoing education of our trainers.” AGO administrator Efi Mouzourou Penintaex was also among the attendees at the event.

Paphos Hands Over European Capital of Culture Title

T

he ceremony of the European Capital of Culture title, in the subsequent Capitals of Culture Valletta and Leeuwarden took place at Markideio on December 29, 2017. At the ceremony, Nicos Anastasiades, president, Cyprus was represented by Costas Kadis, minister, education and culture, Cyprus, who expressed his thanks and congratulations to Pafos 2017 for the successful implementation of the institution, stressing in particular the fact that the

European Union itself considers Paphos as an example for other cities. Greetings were delivered by Phedonas Phedonos, mayor, Paphos and Christos Patsalides, chairman, Pafos 2017, both expressing their satisfaction for the successful organisation of the European Capital of Culture event. Moreover, they mentioned the fact that the cultural year title, for 2017, will remain as a long-term accomplishment for Paphos and Cyprus.

Car Park to be Built Under Omirou Avenue

onstantinos Yiorkadjis, mayor, Nicosia, and Stavros Theodosiou, CEO, A.Panayides Contracting, have signed contracts for the construction of a car park under Omirou Avenue. The underground parking area will cover the section of Omirou Avenue from its junction with Anastasios G. Leventis (formerly Leondiou) Avenue to its junction with Evagorou Avenue. According to the relevant contracts, for the sum of EUR5.137 million plus VAT, work will last 16-months, with traffic diversions announced in advance. The car park will have space for 160 vehicles including seven spaces for drivers will mobility problems. Access will be via ramps on Omirou Avenue. The project also includes the construction of public toilets by D’Avila Moat, stairs and lifts connecting the parking area with the moat and the avenue, and the avenue’s general improvement.

Ayia Napa Celebrates Epiphany Celebration

yia Napa celebrated Epiphany on January 06, organised by the municipality and Holy Metropolis of Constantia, Famagusta. A church service was carried out at Panagia Church, and was followed with a sanctification of the waters by the High Metropolitan of Constantia,

Famagusta, Vasilios, where 40 swimmers jumped into the icy waters of Ayia Napa Port in order to pull out the Holy Cross. The first swimmer who found the Holy Cross was awarded by Yiannis Karousos, mayor, Ayia Napa, Vassilios, and the city council with a golden cross,

while the rest of the swimmers were awarded with a silver cross. The celebration was attended by Christoforos Fokaidis, minister, defence, Cyprus, where he expressed his wishes for the island’s freedom and reunion from occupation.

Limassol's The Gallery to have Revolving Restaurant

A

skanis Group has announced the design scheme for its new Limassol seafront project, The Gallery, which will include Cyprus’ first ever revolving restaurant. The project aims to connect the coastal road and Molos Park with a public pedestrian bridge which will pass through The Gallery’s square and end on St. Andrews Street. The square’s restaurants and cafes will also link the project with the adjacent Municipal Arts Centre. The revolving restaurant will be situated on the rooftop of The Gallery, offering a 360 degree view. A bar will be created on the middle floor and, on the floor below, there will be a private space for events with an unobstructed sea view. Askanis expects to complete The Gallery project in 2021.

City of Dreams Mediterranean Unveiled INTEGRATED CASINO RESORTS CYPRUS CONSORTIUM HAS PRESENTED THE FINALISED PLANS FOR CYPRUS’ FIRST INTEGRATED RESORT, CITY OF DREAMS MEDITERRANEAN, LABELLED AS THE ISLAND’S BIGGEST TOURISM DEVELOPMENT.

W

ith a total investment of EUR550 million, the western Limassol property is expected to be launched by early 2021. Reportedly Europe’s biggest integrated casino resort, with gaming areas covering 136 tables and 1,200 gaming machines, the five-star hotel also includes luxurious villas and 500 rooms, 11 restaurants and cafeterias, a wellness centre, sports centre, extensive pool area with river woods and surf pools, a high-end retail area and an outdoor amphitheatre with extensive green areas. City of Dreams Mediterranean is also being designed to offer 9,600 m2 of meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions facilities, alongside a convention expo centre.

The company opened the office to further capitalise on the great success of Limassol Del Mar and pave the way to their new developments in the city. University of Sydney Create 3D VR Model of Paphos Amphitheatre

A

3D virtual reality model of an ancient amphitheatre in Paphos will soon be available in the form of a mobile application. The island's Department of Antiquities, made the announcement as a University of Sydney team, behind the app’s creation, completed the 18th season of archaeological excavations at the ancient Hellenistic-Roman theatre. App users will get an idea of the size and scale of the Antonine phase of the building’s history. The theatre was shaped out of the hill's bedrock and used for performances from the foundation of the ancient city, around 300 BC, until its final destruction by an earthquake in the late fourth century AD. It was at its peak of activity during the mid second century AD reign of Roman emperors Antoninus Pius and Marcus Aurelius.

Cyprus Hosts Trilateral Summit with Greece and Jordan

yprus, Greece and Jordan signed trilateral agreements in the framework of the first Trilateral Summit between the three, held at the presidential palace in Nicosia on January 16. Chaired by Nicos Anastasiades, president, Cyprus, Abdullah II, king, Jordan, and Alexis Tsipras, prime minister, Greece, the three countries signed a Memorandum of Understanding between the Ministry of Environment and Energy of the Hellenic Republic, the Ministry of Energy, Commerce,

Industry and Tourism of the Republic of Cyprus and the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, for Cooperation in the Field of Renewable Energy Sources. Moreover, the three governments agreed on the prevention of theft, illicit imports, exports or transfer of ownership; and recognition of the Training and Certification of Seafarers from Jordan for service on Cyprus flagged vessels.

yprus Shipping Chamber was awarded the Green Offices eco-certification, by adopting environmentally sustainable working methods and solutions in the workplace. The Chamber was awarded for reducing its negative impact on the environment and for remaining committed to its corporate environmental responsibility. The certification ceremony took by at Cyprus Shipping Chamber’s office on January 15. The certification was given by Michalis Ieridis, secretary general, Cyprus Marine Environment Protection Association, to Thomas Kazakos, director general, Cyprus Shipping Chamber. Environmental sustainability at the workplace as well as protection of the marine environment is an integral part of the Shipping Chamber’s actions, with the Chamber ready to participate in commendable initiatives such as the Green Offices programme.

Wizz Air Announces Larnaca-Vienna Route Wizz Air has announced a new route from Larnaca to Vienna, set to commence on November 25.

T

he upcoming low-fare connection will offer four weekly frequencies creating great opportunities for Cyprus travellers to discover one of Europe’s cultural centres. The airline is further diversifying its network from Cyprus, offering a total of 14 routes to 10 countries available from Larnaca this year that will further contribute to increasing inbound and outbound tourism and improve business ties between the countries. Cyprus Airways Launches Beirut Ticket Sales

C

yprus Airways has launched ticket sales for flights from Larnaca to Beirut, for summer 2018. Direct flights from Larnaca to Beirut are scheduled to begin on March 29 and will be offered up to four times a week. Cyprus Airways offers two categories of fares, Basic and Flex. The Flex offers additional services, such as 23 kg baggage allowance, seat selection and more, giving customers the option to customise their travel experience. Passengers can book their flights through the airline's website, call centre or through their respective travel agent.

Angels Kids Club Getting a Revamp

I

n anticipation of its February 27 reopening, the team behind Limassol’s Mediterranean Beach Hotel has revealed plans to revamp its dedicated Angels kids club. The four-star hotel will be infusing a nautical feel into its kids club, paying homage to Cyprus. Additionally, three separate areas will be established to cater to various age groups. The first room is being designed to have a series of games and activities ideally suited to children up to the age of 12, whilst the second room, geared towards older children, will come equipped with more advanced electronic entertainment options. The third room is envisioned as serving as a multifunction area, through which a series of activities and events may be enjoyed, including movies, mini discos, aerobics and yoga for kids.

On December 10, 2017 a ceremony was held at Ayia Napa's central square, where Panayiotis Dais of Nireas Triathlon, granted EUR500,00 to Chryso Prodromou of Famagusta Autism Association, with the aim of strengthening its work. The amount was collected during the charity marathon which was organised by Ayia Napa Municipality and Nireas Triathlon, in the framework of the Christmas Marathon and Christmas tree illumination ceremony, which took place on December 03, 2017. Dais expressed his heartfelt thanks to the Municipality for helping to organise the race and for the opportunity given to Nireas Triathlon to help Famagusta Autism Association's work.

Yiannis Karousos, mayor, Ayia Napa, and members of the municipality council, carried out the traditional New Year’s cake cutting ceremory in the reception area of the Municipality Hall. Karousos, having wished for a happy new year to everybody, briefly referred to the achievements that the local authority demonstrated in 2017. He especially commented on the increase in revenue while reducing costs, on what he said made it possible to launch the city's development projects. Karousos also referred to the targets set for this year, pointing out that he has no doubt that staff will respond fully to the challenges being greater in view of the expected growth in tourism across the region.

On December 21, 2017 the Special School of Apostle Barnabas, dedicated to special needs children in Liopetri, was visited by Konstantinos Zannettos, president, Ayia Napa Youth Council, along with other members of the Council. Chrystoula Chrysiliou, director, Special School of Apostle Barnabas, welcomed the Council to the school and gave them a tour of the grounds. After the tour, the delegation met children and spent time with them as they were also playing and singing. Meanwhile, during some speeches, Zannettos announced the Council's donation to the school, while also expressing its support on the work being done. In return, Chrysiliou expressed her genuine appreciation for the Ayia Napa Youth Council's support and wishes. The aid was given during a granting ceremony

LIMASSOL CARNIVAL 2018 Limassol February 08 – 18 The annual carnival celebrations, organised for all ages, will include parties, parades and gallery exhibitions

n event titled, Focussing on the next generation of scientists and Cyprus' local space industry; was recently organised by CyprusUS Chamber of Commerce and Cyprus Young Professionals, in collaboration with the Cyprus Trade Centre in New York. Nikos Nikolaou, president, Cyprus-US Chamber, opened the event by welcoming the guests and commented on work done by the Cyprus Space Exploration Organisation (CSEO). “Not in my wildest dreams did I think that it would be possible to speak about Cyprus and space exploration," stated Nikolaou. "We organised this event because we consider that it is a suitable moment to inform on the CSEO's work in the Greek-American community.”

he last round of the Cyprus Rally Championship came to an end on December 02, 2017 with Simos Galatariotis, rally driver and Antonis Ioannou, co-diver, winning Tiger Rally Cyprus in their Skoda Fabia R5. The champions were honoured during an awards ceremony, which was held at Limassol Marina on the same day. The highly-anticipated motorsport event, organised by Limassol Auto Club and counting overall 23 participations, commenced at Limassol Marina and covered a total itinerary of 243 km.

Art Exhibition Avlea Presented

T ARTS & CRAFTS EXHIBITION Nicosia February 11 More than 30 creators from Cyprus and other countries are to exhibit their handmade masterpieces

he ambiguous role of the curtain was highlighted at an exhibition entitled Avlea which opened on December 28, 2017 in the surrounding area of the new Markideio Theatre in Pafos. The event saw 12 eminent visual artists from Cyprus, Greece and Malta, come together who with their installations and videos, focussed on the notion of theatricality and, at the same time, raise questions about modern Europe. With this exhibition, the Pafos 2017 organisation officially passed the baton to the cities that have been designated as European Capitals of Culture 2018, namely Valletta, Malta and Leeuwarden, Netherlands.
