WISSAM SULEIMAN, CLUSTER GENERAL MANAGER, MARSA MALAZ KEMPINSKI, THE PEARL AND KEMPINSKI SUITES & RESIDENCES DOHA, SHARES HIS VIEWS ON THE QATARI TOURISM INDUSTRY’S FAST-PACED DEVELOPMENT. TRAVEL TRADE WEEKLY: What do you think are the main forces driving Qatar’s successful tourism strategy? WISSAM SULEIMAN: The tourism strategy developed by Qatar Tourism Authority (QTA), has given robust parameters for the tourism industry to grow and develop over the coming years. The growth we have seen in arrivals to Qatar has come predominantly from visitors from Saudi Arabia and the UAE, which are the key geographic targets of the tourism strategy. The increase of visitors is a result of a number of criteria outlined in the tourism strategy. One aspect is the public-private partnerships, for example the 6 FEBRUARY 2016

ism, such as Qatar International Food Festival 2015, which attracted 170,000 visitors and provided a platform to showcase the unique offerings of Marsa Malaz Kempinski. A number of highquality sporting events have also taken place in Doha […]. TRAVEL TRADE WEEKLY: How will supply and demand dynamics evolve over the coming years? WISSAM SULEIMAN: 2015 saw approximately 4,000 new hotel rooms come onto the market and this number is set to grow even further this year. However, despite the increase in supply, Doha is forecast to maintain an average 80 percent occupancy rate, whilst also maintaining its RevPAR and average daily rate (ADR) [as per PwC’s report]. As the industry begins to prepare for the huge influx of visitors expected for the 2022 FIFA World Cup and the growth targets outlined in Qatar National Vision 2030, we will see more hospitality propositions open in Qatar. It is estimated that an additional 60,000 rooms will need to be created for the football world championship, so it is essential that new open-

TRAVEL TRADE WEEKLY: What will your focus be in the first months of this year? AGENT CORNER

AGENT’S INSIGHT When and how did you get involved in the tourism industry? While I was in Thailand for nearly 10 years. During that time I had the opportunity to deal with many leading travel companies. Of course Thailand is a major tourist destination. Though, my career started as a marketing person, later on I continued in the jewellery industry and I participated in major jewellery exhibitions around the world. I realised that working while travelling is fun, so I started this company along with my husband in 2007. What are the most important attributes of a good travel agent/tour operator? To be highly responsive, to be an expert in the field and to offer personalised services when required.

Travelport Grows Presence

What is the most frequently asked question that your company receives from customers? New customers usually need to be assured that everything will be perfectly organised, and that they will have our support throughout their experience, whether it is a tour or a conference to manage. Once they use our services, our personalised approach is what brings them back. What are the must-visits and must-dos in Sri Lanka that no one should miss? Sri Lanka is a wonderful all-year-round destination that will satisfy almost any need and wish. Besides the wellknown archaeological sites, including the ancient cities of Anuradhapura Polonnaruwa and Nuwara Eliya, there is Kandy with its stunning views of the Hill Top, and the spectacular hills, I would definitely recommend whale watching across Mirissa where you will sense the vibe of the sea. Which destination is on your bucket list? Dambulla, Sigiriya, Trincomalee and Jaffna. 6 FEBRUARY 2016
