Despite global air cargo volumes suffering a 5.6 percent year-on-year fall in February, Middle Eastern carriers were able to continue their consistent growth trend.

T

his is according to International Air Transport Association (IATA) figures, which indicate that airlines in the region registered a 3.7 percent expansion compared to the same month in 2015, while African carriers witnessed a decline of 1.7 percent. “The air freight business remains a difficult one. February’s performance continues a weak trend. And there are few factors on the horizon that would see this change substantially. In the absence of an imminent resurgence of demand, the importance of improving the value proposition with modernised processes – the e-freight vision – remains a top priority,” said Tony Tyler, CEO, IATA.

WEEKLY NEWS HOTEL PERFORMANCE According to HotStats data, hotels across major Middle Eastern cities faced challenges in February with profits dropping in Abu Dhabi and RevPAR declining in both Amman and Riyadh.

www.traveltradeweekly.travel

Amman Hoteliers Slash Costs

E

stablishments in Amman are in the midst of a challenging period of operation, as RevPAR fell 11.3 percent year-onyear, to USD89.31. Profit conversion in the rooms department also declined 1.2 percentage points, while cost of sales increased 12.1 percent for the month as hoteliers attempted to stimulate demand via online channels. Total RevPAR was also reduced by 6.3 percent as food and beverage as well as conference and banqueting revenue plummeted on a per available room basis. Despite deteriorating revenue levels, hospitality businesses in the Jordanian capital cut costs to drive a 26.2 percent year-on-year increase in GOPPAR for the month, thanks to a 10.9 percent saving in labour costs and a 20 percent drop in overhead costs.

Abu Dhabi Market Laments Demand Amman

Abu Dhabi

Y

ear-on-year profit per room recorded at Abu Dhabi properties dropped 37 percent, largely due to the absence of the International Defence Exhibition & Conference which was primarily responsible for the 51.2 percent spike in profit per room in February 2015. As the event was not held this year, the decline in performance registered across all measures was significant, with a 30.8 percent downfall in RevPAR and a 21.6 percent plunge in total RevPAR. Even though hoteliers were able to reduce payroll costs by 9.4 percent and overheads by 11.5 percent, the top-line fall was too severe, resulting in a 37 percent drop in gross operating profit per available room (GOPPAR), to USD81.48.

4

Stifled Profit Performance in Riyadh

R

iyadh hoteliers recorded a 9.9 percent slump in RevPAR in February, which contributed to the 7.6 percent year-onyear decline in this measure since the beginning of the year, with Saudi Arabia continuing to face economic challenges as a result of the oil prices crash. Headline performance at the capital’s properties has been mixed over the last 12 months, although results so far this year showed that it is on a downward trajectory. Rooms department profitability also suffered due to a nine percent increase in rooms payroll, resulting in a 1.9 percentage point slide in profit conversion, to 83.9 percent of revenue.

“West Asia has always been an important growth region for SkyCargo. Over the past 30 years, we have seen the route perform very well, with increasing volumes of cargo carried out of Colombo to important markets in Europe and the Americas via our hub in Dubai. When combined with the efficiency of one of the youngest fleets in the skies, unrivalled ground-handling facilities and the very latest information technology, Emirates SkyCargo is the ideal partner for Sri Lanka-based businesses as they look to boost trade.”

Comparative advantage of the Kingdom lies in its diversity “For several decades now, Moroccan tourism has been consolidating its development and the positioning of its authenticity label. This positioning represents a real competitive advantage for Morocco today compared to its direct competitors, who are mainly involved in mass tourism. The most significant comparative advantage of the Kingdom lies in its diversity: in terms of the territories and landscapes; of natural resources and ecosystems; as well as diversity of cultures and influences [both] African and European.”

AGENT CORNER

AGENT’S INSIGHT When and how did you get involved in the tourism industry? After my first overseas trip to New Zealand for a snow skiing holiday, I was immediately bitten by the travel bug and on my return home, I had a discussion with the travel agent with whom I booked the holiday through and he ended up offering me a job as a travel consultant. My journey had started and I have been in the industry ever since. What are the most important attributes of a good travel agent/tour operator? The key to any role in the industry is to be able to understand three really basic points. First, understand who your customer is; second, discover what it is they really want from their holiday; and third, deliver above expectations every time.

What is the most frequently asked question that your company receives from customers? Unfortunately it generally involves something like “Is that your best price?” What are the must-visits and mustdos in Australia that no one should miss? Australia is a land full of must-dos and I will not mention the obvious ones. When coming to Australia people should look for the regional wine areas that offer some of the best food and wine experiences anywhere in the world. Melbourne, my home city, has just been voted the Sports capital of the world for the last decade and I strongly encourage people to experience at least one game of Australian rules football April through to September, or the excitement of the Spring Racing Carnival, October to November. Which destination is on your bucket list? Too many to mention, however, a week on the beach in the Maldives sounds good right now.
