igitally savvy clients want more from their travel agents than just a website or an app, revealed the WTM Global Trends Report, in association with Euromonitor International. The concept of ‘clicks and mortar’ has moved on, the report states, and agents need to think in terms of merging their physical and digital presence to thrive in what is known as the ‘physital’ economy. Caroline Bremner, head of travel, Euromonitor International, said, “Travel agents who think that having a web site or app means they are meeting the needs of today’s travellers, are four years behind the times. Technology has moved on, and so has what their potential clients expect.” Travel agents are advised to consider virtual reality as a way to bridge the gap between the traditional face-to-face experience of visiting a high street agent and the expectations of today’s travellers.

Q & A with

RENDEZVOUS

ENAD TANNOUS CLUSTER GENERAL MANAGER, CENTRO CAPITAL CENTRE AND CAPITAL CENTRE ARJAAN BY ROTANA, ABU DHABI

AS THE UAE CAPITAL CONTINUES TO CONSOLIDATE ITS POSITION ON THE GLOBAL TOURISM MAP, ENAD TANNOUS, CLUSTER GENERAL MANAGER, CENTRO CAPITAL CENTRE AND CAPITAL CENTRE ARJAAN BY ROTANA, ABU DHABI, REFLECTS ON THE DESTINATION’S RISING APPEAL.

TRAVEL TRADE WEEKLY: What attributes set the brands and the two properties apart from other hotels in their respective category in Abu Dhabi? ENAD TANNOUS: Centro and Arjaan are brands under the umbrella of Rotana Hotel Management Corporate. Centro is a revolutionary hotel concept which serves as the ultimate solution for smart travellers, on an affordable budget who do not want to compromise on style or quality. Centro is centered around the guest. Arjaan hotel apartments on the other hand have been developed with both long-term guests and families in mind. With the objective of closing the gap be-

16

tween a hotel room and home, the hotel apartments are well appointed with up-to-date technology and equipment. Capital Centre Arjaan is a natural choice for guests seeking a smooth transition into Abu Dhabi. Situated in the Capital Centre district of Abu Dhabi and few steps away from Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC), is a strategic advantage for both properties. The hotels provide a unique offering in their category for visitors to ADNEC who are looking for a hassle-free stay while they continue to stay focussed on their business objectives. […] MICE business is a large and growing segment for both hotels and with state-of-the-art technologies in our meeting rooms; we endeavour to grow to this segment. At the heart of the MICE experience is the catering, and we aim to provide a top-notch experience, personalised services and high-quality food to satisfy the taste buds of business guests. In 2015, ADNEC has showcased a 13 percent increase in visitors and consequently, we look forward to [having] our share of this pie. […] TRAVEL TRADE WEEKLY: What are the most prominent trends shaping the tourism industry’s future in Abu Dhabi? ENAD TANNOUS: The Abu Dhabi Vision 2030 has created a strategic long-term road map of growth for the emirate and the tourism industry is a key sector pegged to this vision. The capital has successfully established itself as a holiday destination with its golden beaches, water parks and desert drives. In the recent decade, the emirate has become a tourism hotspot with some of the most remarkable entertainment zones and heritage sites. Not only is it home to one of the most majestic mosques in the world but also to the Formula 1 track built on a man-made island. The tourism industry is moving on the trajectory of sustainable growth and development. The emirate of Abu Dhabi has been a pioneer in the initiative towards developing low-carbon and alternative technologies. With Masdar City, the destination has embarked on a journey to develop the world’s most sustainable eco city. Sir Bani Yas Island is a remarkable example of how eco-tourism is being promoted and integrated with the hospitality sector. Zayed Sports City reflects the emirate’s

www.traveltradeweekly.travel

commitment to nurturing its success [in] the field of sports and international events, such as the recent Taste of Abu Dhabi Food Festival also show how the destination is complimenting the hospitality sector. TRAVEL TRADE WEEKLY: What role can hoteliers play in further strengthening Abu Dhabi’s position on the global tourism map? ENAD TANNOUS: The most essential tool to achieve this is to stay focussed to the basics of serving guests. During travel, a large part of the memories made have to do with the experience during the guest’s stay. Our teams are dedicated to making the guest experience most personalised and spending a large portion of the time interacting with them to understand their needs and exceed expectations. Choices and preferences of the guest are well noted and this data is used as a guideline to ensure a better experience and loyalty to the brand. Participating in travel and trade events around the world is imperative to understand the trends in the industry and secure future potential business. […] TRAVEL TRADE WEEKLY: With new hotel projects underway, competition in Abu Dhabi is expected to heat up in the coming years. What are your expectations? ENAD TANNOUS: With new hotels projects underway, the increase in room inventory will no doubt stiffen competition, however, focussing on the larger perspective, it will have a positive impact on Abu Dhabi’s overall hospitality offering. Various niche markets are expected to sprout up in the coming years. A wide range of government initiatives, like the expansion of the Abu Dhabi International Airport, Etihad Airways improving its leisure offering, playing host to world-class events and promoting Abu Dhabi internationally, will create the necessary demand and cater to the increase in supply of rooms. There is no doubt that price strategy is going to be key and we are focussing on a multitude of activities to better decipher consumer behaviour at a micro level which will impact our strategy for revenue management. Experiential marketing initiatives through exciting events, value for money, along with guest service from the heart is what will be essential to stay on top. 26 NOVEMBER 2016

AGENT CORNER

AGENT’S INSIGHT When and how did you get involved in the tourism industry? I was first hired by Japan Airlines (JAL) Montreal in 1995 as an inside sales representative. I had recently come back home from a six month journey around the world after a three year stay in Japan on an exchange and teaching program. Having lived in and travelled across Asia on several occasions, I had firsthand knowledge of many destinations served by JAL and knew Japan well, which was a major asset for my new employer. What are the most important attributes of a good travel agent/ tour operator? Being helpful, curious, honest, responsive, knowledgeable and resourceful. And to never say no.
