The International Air Transport Association (IATA) highlighted four priorities in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) which must be addressed for aviation to deliver maximum economic and social benefits.

T

hese priorities include sufficient and affordable infrastructure capacity, aligned with user needs; curbing the spate of unprecedented increases in taxes and charges over the last year; aligning consumer protection regulations with global standards; and enhancing security efforts. Passenger demand in the region is set to expand 4.8 percent each year on average over the next 20 years, to become a market of 400 million passengers in 2035. “Strengthening aviation, in partnership with governments, pays huge social and economic dividends. Airlines in MENA face very different business challenges. But whether building or protecting competitiveness, cost-efficient infrastructure, global standards, reasonable costs and secure operations are critical, said Alexandre de Juniac, CEO, IATA.

MOHAMMAD LABBAN GENERAL MANAGER, HYATT REGENCY SHARM EL SHEIKH

EGYPT’S TOURISM INDUSTRY HAS BEEN TRANSFORMED IN RECENT YEARS, WITH FURTHER EUROPEAN FLIGHTS BEING REINTRODUCED, MOHAMMAD LABBAN, GENERAL MANAGER, HYATT REGENCY SHARM EL SHEIKH, OFFERS AN INSIGHT INTO THE CURRENT MARKET CONDITIONS.

TRAVEL TRADE WEEKLY: Have you seen a shift in where travellers arrive from? MOHAMMAD LABBAN: Italy restarted its operation with 11 direct flights to Egypt's Red Sea resort of Sharm El-Sheikh as well as 30 flights scheduled from Ukraine. In addition, Germany has been operating two flights weekly since October 31. At the same time, occupancy fell sharply after the mass evacuation following [an unfortunate] incident.

16

www.traveltradeweekly.travel

Hyatt Regency Sharm El Sheikh

The demographics coming from the Gulf States have changed and Egypt must be prepared to welcome a larger share of the Arab market. Such significant opportunities boost occupancy in several destinations like Marsa Alam in the coming period. The region is a promising touristic area due to its huge resources, such as expansive diving areas with stunning coral reef. This means it faces many future opportunities for expansion by offering global travellers diversity in options. As for Hyatt, we are focusing on the expanding Gulf and Arab market by offering constant promotions, marketing campaigns and tailoring our services to fit their tastes. We are working closely with our tour operator partners to guarantee the smooth operation of business once the European flights return. TRAVEL TRADE WEEKLY: How has the tourism industry changed in recent years? MOHAMMAD LABBAN: Egypt has become in the past few decades, a mass-tourism destination, attracting sun-seekers with its beach resorts and package deals. Popular spots include Sharm El Sheikh, in the south of the Sinai Peninsula, which is known for its dive sites and wealth of diving centres. There has been a shift in the purpose of visits from the traditional aim of seeking sunny weather and rich historical sites to attending conferences and events. Such a shift from mass tourism will

open new horizons for tourism in Egypt. Travel Trade Weekly: How does Hyatt Regency Sharm El Sheikh stand out amongst the competition? MOHAMMAD LABBAN: Travellers will always need a place to stay when out of town on business or on vacation. We at Hyatt will make our hotel their preferred option by offering the right balance of customer service and price; offering a unique environment or specialty services to differentiate ours from the competition and limit the number of rooms offered at discounted rates. We as a Hyatt brand are offering a luxurious five-star product that has been able to maintain an unwavering level of service even during the harsh circumstances that the destination is now facing. We continue to focus on the ultimate guest satisfaction that attracts the true Hyatt guest looking for a distinguished experience.

Creating Awareness for Emiratisation

I North Star Breaks World Record

n an effort to support Emiratisation, Dubai-based recruitment consultancy, Dawaam, is actively engaged in connecting prospective employers with Emirati employees. Despite continued government efforts, attracting Emirati graduates and professionals to the private sector remains a challenge. UAE nationals continue to associate the public sector with superior employment opportunities and benefits. With an estimated 80 percent of the UAE workforce comprised of expatriates, there is an emphasis on attracting Emirati talent to play an active role in the development of the country. The ever widening gap that exists between levels of public and private sector employment in the UAE, presents a challenge to the successful implementation of these directives, and according to Jalilah Al Jubreen, Emiratisation specialist, Dawaam, there is a lack of awareness surrounding the opportunities that exist within the private sector. Al Jubreen informed that creating awareness of existing opportunities would play a pivotal role in attracting UAE nationals.
