WEEKLY NEWS HOTEL PERFORMANCE
Hotstats has released its MENA Chain Hotels Market Review January 2017, which revealed great success in Cairo amid a challenging month for properties in both Jeddah and Riyadh.
Rooms Cost of Sale Outpaced Revenue in Jeddah
R
ooms profit per room at properties in Jeddah continued to fall in January, down 32 percent over the same month 2015. In the 12 months to January, hoteliers recorded a 1.4 percent jump in achieved average room rate, however, this was cancelled out by a five percentage point decline in occupancy to 71.4 percent. While achieved average room rate increased USD4.05, rooms cost of sale overtook this figure, rising USD4.25 to USD9.98, making it equivalent to 4.6 percent of rooms revenue. The 74.4 percent increase in this parameter in the 12 months to January, indicates the increased use of online travel agents. As a result, rooms profit per room fell 7.2 percent in 2016, to USD177.86, despite an 8.5 percent saving in rooms payroll and a 7.4 percent reduction in rooms expenses.

H
oteliers in Cairo welcomed a 130 percent year-on-year increase in profit per room in January, continuing the strong performance observed in the past 24 months. Partly fuelled by demand stemming from the 9th Breast, Gynecological & Immunooncology International Cancer Conference held in the capital, occupancy in January rose 8.7 percentage points to 70.5 percent, while achieved average room rate soared 96.6 percent compared to the same month in 2015. All in all, this resulted in a 124.4 percent year-on-year boost in RevPAR, which reached USD70.80. In the past 36 months, gross operating profit per available room has risen 252 percent, from USD10.61 in 2013-2014 to USD37.36 in the 12 months to January.

F
ollowing on the 24 percent plummet in profit per room in 2016, hotels in Riyadh also suffered a 16.2 percent year-on-year drop in profit during January. Furthermore, RevPAR declined 13.9 percent during the month under review, which was exacerbated by falling revenue in food and beverage along with conference and banqueting, down 15 percent and 20.1 percent, respectively, compared to January 2015. Addresses in the city attempted to overcome the challenging period through a 10.2 percent saving in payroll, and reducing overheads 10.5 percent. In the 12 months to January, RevPAR stood at USD126.12, while profit per room during this period fell 24.4 percent.
