Ahead of the Arabian Travel Market (ATM), taking place at Dubai World Trade Centre on April 24 – 27, Bahrain Tourism and Exhibition Authority (BTEA) is launching a robust marketing campaign, with the aim of increasing tourism arrivals 36.2 percent by 2018.

I

n other words, the Kingdom expects to welcome 15.8 million annual visitors by 2018 which will place the country’s tourism industry on track to achieve its USD1 billion target by 2020. To meet the objective, various strategic initiatives will be implemented, such as increased investment into tourism infrastructure, the modernisation of Bahrain International Airport, and the opening of Avenues Bahrain Mall, to name a few. With seven offices worldwide, BTEA will focus on source markets in Europe and Asia.

According to the Airports Council International Asia-Pacific, passenger traffic across the Middle East delivered strong growth in December 2016, up 9.4 percent year-on-year.

ubai International welcomed 9.3 percent more passengers than in December 2015, while Doha’s Hamad International Airport (HIA) continued to generate the highest growth in the region with a 15 percent surge in passenger traffic. In terms of air freight, the growth trajectory continued during the month under review and increased 10.4 percent. Overall, in 2016, the region recorded a 5.8 percent rise in this segment. Major air freight hubs continued to report significant gains in December 2016, especially HIA and Dubai International, with a boost of 22.6 percent and 5.4 percent, respectively.

irports across the Middle East are driving investment in airport technology with a view to enhance security, to support the expected 4.8 percent annual growth in passenger numbers over the next 20 years. This presents the challenge of ensuring passengers are handled efficiently without compromising on security. According to Angela Gittens, director general, Airport Councils International, the Middle East has a potential to lead global change in regards to security. Mohammed Ahli, director general, Dubai Civil Aviation Authority, added, “Our two international airports are gearing up to serve up to 146 million passengers by 2025 [...], which increases the need for ensuring safety and security for all stakeholders. We are fully prepared to face this challenge by adopting advanced technology and deploying trained personnel […].”

An electric car, on a 34,000km road trip from the Netherlands to Australia, stopped at the hub to refuel in support of the event. Michael Ibbitson, executive vice president, technology and infrastructure, Dubai Airports, commented, “The green mobility initiative launched as part of the Dubai Plan 2021 identifies the deployment of electric and hybrid vehicles as a potential approach to achieving sustainability targets and help Dubai emerge as a smart integrated city.”

t the 2017 Skytrax World Airport Awards at Passenger Terminal EXPO 2017, Hamad International Airport (HIA) was ranked Sixth Best Airport in the World, up four places from 2016 and, for the third consecutive year, Best Airport in the Middle East. Additionally, the hub was also awarded Best Staff Service in the Middle East, for the second year running. H.E. Hertz’s Global Inventory Accessible with Sabre Sabre has announced an expanded full-content agreement with Hertz, delivering the car rental’s worldwide vehicle inventory to more than 425,000 travel agents and users of the digital e-commerce platform.

W

ith the renewed agreement, Hertz is positioned to utilise Sabre’ s global travel marketplace, including popular prepay options previously available only on the Hertz website. The system’s users now have an access to all Hertz rates worldwide, integrated into the Sabre Red platform. Traci Mercer, senior vice president, hotel, car, cruise, rail, Sabre Travel Network, noted, “[This] landmark agreement will maximise retailing opportunities through a mix of digital channels. apital Car Hire has entered into a multiyear agreement with Travelport, marking its first ever partnership with a global distribution system (GDS) provider. Founded in 2000 and boasting a fleet of over 500 vehicles, the South African car rental company has now enabled more than 68,000 travel agents in the GDS’s network to access its inventory and content. Vinesh Reathlall, managing director, Capital Car Hire, said, “[…] We strongly believe that Travelport’s industry leading technology and extensive network of agency users around the world, will help us sell more and grow our revenues.“ Douglas Jewson, managing director, Travelport Africa, added that the agreement marks an industry-first in South Africa.

t the Emirates Airline Festival of Literature, which took place on March 03 – 11 at InterContinental Dubai Festival City, Emirates and Google offered visitors the chance to enjoy creative onground experiences that merged family fun with technology. During the event, guests had the opportunity to draw their own life size paintings, using features that recreated stars, light and fire. In addition, they had the chance to explore popular titles in English and Arabic in a specially designed reading lounge and read a vast selection of e-books. Children were able to interact with Emirates onboard animals, while specially commissioned artists and Emirates crew members recreated famous landmarks through three-dimensional strokes in some of carrier’s most popular destinations on a large screen.

t ITB Berlin, Germanybased Aloutom Reisen, and Diyafat Al Haramain, a Saudi organisation, signed an agreement to arrange tourism trips for German Muslims, as part of Saudi Commission for Tourism & National Heritage‘s After Umrah Trips programme. The scheme has been implemented to contribute to the development of the country’s tourism industry and showcase Saudi Arabia’s history to Muslims overseas. Majed Reboi, CEO, Diyafat Al Haramain, noted that the trips will begin in April and several routes have been planned, including Al Taif, Al Ula and Hail.

ollowing an agreement with Onur Air, the launch customer, dnata will now provide passenger, baggage, ramp, and cargo handling services in Amsterdam to many major airlines from around the world. In April, the company will further boost its offering by extending its contract with Emirates, and will offer passenger services for its double daily flights from Dubai. atar Tourism Authority (QTA) will highlight its experiential product offering at Arabian Travel Market (ATM), with culture and heritage as the main driver in achieving its 2030 target of 10 million annual visitors and USD17.8 billion in tourism receipts. Furthermore, Qatar plans to invest up to USD45 billion in new developments, including USD2.3 billion set aside for the 2022 FIFA World Cup and USD6.9 billion for transport infrastructure. QTA forecasts that by 2026, the tourism sector’s total economic contribution will soar to QAR81.2 billion (USD22.3 billion), 7.3 percent of the country’s GDP, a huge rise from the 2015 figure of QAR48.5 billion (USD13.3 billion).

n order to highlight the importance of innovation in boosting tourism, Ajman Tourism Development Department (ATDD) organised a lecture on sustainable tourism, in collaboration with United Arab Emirates University. The seminar, delivered at the university’s campus, was led by H.E. Faisal Al Nuaimi, general manager, ATDD, who defined sustainable tourism and discussed the development of guidelines through action and research. The students had an opportunity to present their views and propose projects for development. Al Nuaimi showcased successful models of sustainable tourism in the emirate and stressed that the development of the industry is largely reliant on the ability to build a database of the local tourism sector as well as through workshops and lectures to keep up with the local and international trends.

Furthermore, the clients can expect a new mix of fleet, offering wider choice when renting cars whether on a short- or longterm basis. Claimed to be one of the largest leasing and car rental operator in the country, Thrifty Car Rental UAE boasts a fleet with more than 18,000 vehicles across 52 locations.

SCTH Lending Scheme to Boost the Sector

audi Commission for Tourism & National Heritage (SCTH) has revealed its SAR3 billion (USD800 million) lending programme for hotel and tourism enterprises as a part of its national transformation initiative, with SAR397 million (USD106 million) allocated for this year. Approved by the Ministry of Finance, loans are based on specific conditions, restricted to less developed municipalities with a population under one million, and to new tourist destinations. The programme aims to facilitate provision of bank loans through establishing a guarantee for repayment of loans to financial institutions in case of default or inability to repay. Hamad Al Semail, vice president, investment and tourism development, SCTH, commented that work is underway to welcome requests and more than 40 have already been received.

Sharjah Hotel Occupancy Reached Milestone In January, hotels in Sharjah recorded a 5.5 percent year-on-year growth in occupancy, according to the latest report by STR.

However, average room rates at hotels across the country fell eight percent in the month under review, to reach AED712 (USD195) due to strong market growth in room supply. It is said that the UAE’s hotel occupancy rates, in general, are among the highest in the world.

Speaking at the event, Mark Gough, executive director, Natural Capital Coalition, said, “2016 saw thousands of companies from around the world picking up the Natural Capital Protocol and exploring the ways in which it can benefit their businesses.”

övenpick Hotels & Resorts has announced a management agreement with Karan Gulf Services for a new property in Wa’ad Al Shamal, one of the largest hotel projects in the northern region of Saudi Arabia, set to be completed in the second half of 2018. The 237-key Mövenpick Hotel Wa’ad Al Shamal will feature three restaurants, extensive meeting and event spaces, along with wellness and recreation facilities. Andreas Mattmüller, chief operating officer, Middle East and South Asia, Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts, commented, “Considering the current lack of upscale accommodation, we see [...] of this hotel as strategically important to the continued growth of the city.”

he partnership demonstrates AccorHotels strategy of expanding its presence in the luxury market, with a focus on developing activities in the resort segment. According to the agreement, AccorHotels will have a 50 percent stake in the joint venture management company. Rixos Hotels will reflag five city-centre hotels to AccorHotels brands, while forthcoming Rixos Hotels properties in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and the Maldives will also be added to this portfolio. ollowing an extensive renovation project, JA Hatta Fort Hotel, a member of JA Hotels & Resorts, will reveal a completely new look to its guests by the end of May. With a blend of traditional Arabic and modern features, the revamped resort will feature new spacious rooms with bathtubs, meeting venues and a wide range of entertainment options, including mini golf, tennis and a mini zoo. The existing 48 deluxe chalet-style rooms, along with two suites and two villas, have been completely refurbished and will be available for bookings from March 31. Located in the Hajar Mountains, the property is less than a two hour drive from Dubai.

Meanwhile during Khareef, the address reported a boost in guests from neighbouring countries. Etihad Cargo Welcomed New Aircraft

tihad Cargo has received its 10th freighter, an Airbus A330F, further boosting Etihad Airways’ fastest growing division. The newest addition brings the carrier’s Airbus freighter fleet to five, joining five Boeing 777s, which collectively serve 42 destinations worldwide. The delivery follows 12 months of sustained growth for the airline, with 10 new freighter routes and 602,026 tonnes of cargo carried in 2016. Iran Air Receives its First A330-200

ran Air has welcomed the delivery of its inaugural Airbus A330-200 as part of its major fleet renewal plan. In December 2016, the carrier placed a firm order of 46 single aisle and 54 wide-body jets, with the delivered aircraft marking the first wide-body from the order. Hailed as one of the world’s most efficient aeroplanes, Iran Air’s A330-200 features a two class cabin layout with a capacity of 32 passengers in business class and an additional 206 in economy class. Furthermore, the milestone comes alongside the airline’s 56th anniversary celebrations.

n an attempt to reduce high baggage charges and deliver better service and value to its customers, Oman Air has partnered with DHL Express. The new arrangement will allow airline’s customers to use DHL Express to send baggage to any address within the airlines network through drop off at any DHL Express service point, at affordable rates. Customers will also be able track packages online. tihad Airways has recently completed the implementation of a new compliant booking standard aiming to improve the information flow between travel agents and the airline’s reservation systems. The airline partnered with Sabre Airline Solutions and Sabre Travel Network to introduce the New Distribution Capability tool which is open for any organisation to implement and use. Improved functionality includes an enhanced shopping experience with access to product images and a view of seat maps directly from the carrier’s host reservation system, enabling agents to customise products.

TRAVEL TRADE WEEKLY: What are the latest efforts to elevate Saudi Arabia’s status as a tourism destination and how does your hotel adhere to such goals? SHANKAR SIVANANDER: The industry is seeing lots of focus on increasing the religious travels, with not only new projects or infrastructure planned in Mecca and Medina, but also a ripple effect on nearby cities which such travellers will visit. The Kingdom is keen on building modern destinations [and facilities] for religious and business visitors such as King Abdullah Economic City or new airport planned in Jeddah. Much like how Aloft Riyadh and Aloft Dhahran have opened fresh and trendy hotels with design-centric styling, the Kingdom is look-

ulf Air has successfully participated in the 2017 Saudi Aramco Travel Show held at Aramco's worldwide headquarters in Dhahran. Alongside travel agents, airlines, travel and hospitality exhibitors, Bahrain’s national carrier showcased some of its key products and services, including flexible travel propositions in addition to the latest news such as the expansion of its network to Georgian capital Tbilisi. From its hub at Bahrain International Airport, the airline currently operates five routes in the Kingdom, Dammam, Riyadh, Medina, Jeddah and Gassim along with double daily flights to 10 regional cities, in addition to selected Indian and European destinations. Overall the carrier boasts a network of 41 cities in 24 countries, spanning three continents.

unisair has announced the launch of its new summer season itinerary for this year, with the operation of two additional air services. The first schedule will be from Tunis to Constantine in Algeria, with three weekly flights. Tokyo to Welcome Ascott Marunouchi

Hyatt Hotels affiliate has entered into a management agreement with CTF BM Operations for the operation of Grand Hyatt Baha Mar, the Baha Mar Convention Center and a variety of restaurants, bars and lounges, all of which will be part of the mixed-use Baha Mar Resort on New Providence Island in the Bahamas. The resort will open in phases, with initial operations at Grand Hyatt Baha Mar expected to begin in April this year. The hotel will offer 1,800 guestrooms, including 227 suites with ocean views, along with three onsite restaurants, including a 200-seat main restaurant, a pool bar and grill, and a jazz-themed lounge. Additionally, the Baha Mar Convention Center will feature more than 7897m2 of flexible meeting space.

BAIJU KRISHNAN has been appointed as the new executive assistant manager in the rooms division of Park Inn by Radisson Muscat, where he will provide senior supervision and support to other department heads. Krishnan has gained more than 16 years of international experience in departments such as revenue, reservations, front office along with food and beverage in addresses in the UK, Oman, the UAE and India. He first joined Carlson Rezidor Hotel Group in 2013 as the revenue manager at the aforementioned address and was also part of the pre-opening team at Park Inn by Radisson Hotel & Residence Duqm. Most recently, he held the position of cluster director of revenue at the group.

PHILIP SAUNDERS has been named as vice president of air commerce, Europe, Middle East and Africa at Travelport. As part of his role, Saunders will focus on the technology provider’s airline partnerships, ensuring that customers have access to its travel commerce platform and technology offerings. Saunders joins from Kuwait Airways, where he served as chief commercial officer and was responsible for boosting both passenger numbers and revenue. With more than 25 years of experience in the aviation industry, Saunders has held senior positions and customer-facing roles at various carriers, including Air Malta, British Airways and Caribbean Airlines, where he gained a comprehensive understanding of what is expected from technology partners.

CHRIS BRADLEY has begun his new role as director of hotel development and sales for the Middle East at Worldhotels. With more than 19 years of experience in the hospitality industry throughout the Middle East and the Americas, Bradley joins the company from Hospitality Management Holdings, where he led the sales department. Bradley has a proven track record for process improvement and new market development at international groups such as InterContinental Hotels Group, Fairmont Hotels and Resorts as well as car rental company, Hertz. In his new role, Bradley will seek opportunities for the group’s member hotels in the Middle East and outbound to other markets.

SAM EL ASMAR has been promoted to corporate vice president, revenue and distribution at Rotana, a step up from his previous role of corporate director of revenue. El Asmar first joined the group in 2012, bringing some 14 years of hotel revenue management and distribution experience with him. In his new role, El Asmar will define and set the revenue strategy for all Rotana’s openings this year and beyond. Additionally, he will oversee the rollout of the company’s IDeas G3 revenue management system across its global portfolio and enhance its revenue platform with automated tools and business analysis. To maximise longterm profitability, El Asmar will also enlarge Rotana’s distribution network to include new partners and markets.

epresentatives of 31 countries from the historic Silk Road exchanged ideas on advancing the tourism contribution to sustainability goals during the 7th World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) Silk Road Ministers Meeting held at ITB Berlin on March 08. Within the framework of the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development 2017, ministers and high level officials shared their views and experiences in promoting sustainable tourism in areas of heritage protection, community participation, sustainable business practices and the development of niche tourism itineraries and products. Addressing the meeting, Taleb Rifai, secretary general, UNWTO, explained that in line with the Sustainable Development Goals adopted by the international community in 2015, tourism has a potential to contribute to all challenges facing people and planet, if managed properly.

or the third consecutive year, Royal Jordanian (RJ) has renewed its partnership with King Hussein Cancer Foundation (KCHF), continuing to help patients suffering from cancer to complete their treatments abroad. According to the agreement, Royal Plus members have the opportunity to donate their collected travel miles to KCHF’s patients allowing them to travel to therapeutic recreation camps abroad. The miles can also be used by the centre’s doctors and employees to travel and attend medical conferences. he Technical Committee TC 228, responsible for tourism and related services within the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), is set to develop a global and transversal international standard that will include, initially, a systematic inventory of existing standards, technical criteria, recommendations and requirements in the field of accessible tourism. The future standards will be called ISO 21902 Tourism and related services – Tourism for all—Requirements and recommendation and will set clear guidelines for tourism planning and destination management. Expected to be approved in 2018 after reaching consensus at the ISO level and promulgated during 2019, the guidelines will be applied to the different stakeholders of the tourism sector, both public and private and at different levels.

MTB Inspires Engineers of Tomorrow

group of engineering students from United Arab Emirates University were the first to tour the Midfield Terminal Bulding (MTB) construction site. The MTB at Abu Dhabi International Airport is one of the most eagerlyanticipated projects being undertaken in the UAE. One of its most impressive features is the supporting structure for the roof of its central space which consists of 18 inclined arches of varying heights, giving the impression that the roof is floating above them. Abdul Majeed Al Khoori, acting CEO, Abu Dhabi Airports, commented, “I hope that seeing our Midfield Terminal under construction will inspire these engineers of tomorrow to build even more impressive structures for our country in the future.”

Etihad Sets Fuel Efficiency Example

n 2016, Etihad Airways achieved a 2.5 percent improvement in the fuel efficiency of its fleet, resulting in substantial reductions in carbon dioxide emissions and reinforcing its sustainability credentials. The airline’s dedicated fuel efficiency team implemented numerous initiatives across all operational functions of the business, saving over 60,000 tonnes of fuel, which amounts to nearly 190,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide savings, the equivalent of 1,200 flights between Abu Dhabi and London, or the removal of over 40,000 cars from the road. Richard Hill, chief operations officer, Etihad Airways, explained, “Fuel optimisation is a top agenda item for any successful and sustainable airline […]. [As] a vital part of our sustainability efforts, we will continue to look for ways to improve our performance.”

he 51st edition of ITB Berlin show was successfully brought to an end, after more than 10,000 exhibitors from 184 countries and regions displayed their products and services on 1,092 stands covering 160,000m² between March 08 – 12. The 14th edition of ITB Berlin Convention running simultaneously has reached a new record of 28,000 international trade participants, a 7.7 percent increase over 2016. ITB Berlin observed the trend of digital transition taking over the business of selling tourism and also identified consumers’ increasing safety concerns as one of the main topics of mutual discussions. Positive forecasts for the European economy were disclosed and in particular, for Germany was hailed one of the biggest source markets for international tourism.

Tourism Ethics Code to Become Mandatory

T

he World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) is working to convert the UNWTO Global Code of Ethics for Tourism into an international convention, in order to increase the commitment of all stakeholders to its principles. An intergovernmental working group composed of representatives of 36 UNWTO member states, is aiming to turn the policy into a binding instrument, as opposed to its current voluntary status. The Convention on Tourism Ethics will be presented for consideration at the 22nd UNWTO General Assembly, set to take place in Chengdu, China, on September 06 – 09. Taleb Rifai, secretary general, UNWTO, pinpointed that having the first international convention based on its cornerstone policy document would be of great significance considering the record number of international tourist arrivals nowadays.
