Dubai

Dubai Saw RevPAR Fall in March

According to STR’s preliminary data for March, hotels in Dubai experienced a challenging month with RevPAR declining 11 percent year-on-year to AED652.61 (USD177.68), driven down by the continued growth in supply.

W

hile demand increased 4.6 percent thanks to a number of large-scale events, supply rose six percent, compared to March 2016, resulting in a 9.8 percent drop in average daily rate to AED756.21 (USD205.89). Despite a 1.3 percent fall in occupancy over the corresponding period in 2016, STR revealed that this is still a significant figure for March, at 86.3 percent.

Growing Passenger Demand in February

Global passenger traffic results released by International Air Transport Association (IATA) demonstrated strong growth in passenger demand in February.

T

he month under review saw a 4.8 percent year-on-year rise in total revenue passenger kilometres (RPK), a 2.7 percent monthly capacity increase and a 1.6 percentage point jump in load factor, representing the highest figure ever reached in February, at 79.5 percent. Meanwhile, IATA estimates that allowing for inflation, the price of air travel has fallen by more than 10 percent in real terms over 2016, accounting for more than half the growth in RPK so far this year. Alexandre de Juniac, CEO, IATA, credited the continuous growth to lower fares and a healthier economic backdrop.

Qatar has grown into a major sporting hub, attracting a lot of international events, including the most prestigious ones on the horizon, such as the 2022 FIFA World Cup and the 2023 FINA World Championships. TRAVEL TRADE WEEKLY: How do the requirements of sports tourists differ? MUSA AL NAMMARI: We continuously serve and host sports groups and athletes from around the world and consequently, we have gained extensive experience on how to cater to the specific needs and requirements of this segment. Sports teams have very specific menus and requirements. Most teams travel along with their dieticians and doctors. Usually, they ask to meet with our chef and food and beverage director, prior to their stay at the hotel. Mostly, our food and beverage team anticipates their requirements in advance, even though each coach has a different programme. TRAVEL TRADE WEEKLY: As well as being located in Aspire Zone, what makes the property the ideal choice for them?

www.traveltradeweekly.travel

MUSA AL NAMMARI: Our hotel is located within the world-class sports and lifestyle destination Aspire Zone, just footsteps away from the training fields. Aspetar Hospital and Aspire Academy are also just a few minutes away. The hotel location is truly very convenient for sports teams. [...] We have qualified team members who understand the different requirements of each guest. We are very flexible in terms of food and beverage services and prepare very specific menus per our guests’ needs. Besides, we offer wellness and fitness facilities, including a swimming pool, gym and massage services. [...]. TRAVEL TRADE WEEKLY: How do you foresee sports tourism developing in the MENA region in the coming years? MUSA AL NAMMARI: Over the past few years, countries in the MENA region have been witnessing the rise of sport townships, high-tech stadiums and coaching academies. Much of the infrastructure is being developed for sports. The sports events are indirectly linked to infrastructure development which includes housing, building and expanding roads and developing public transportation systems. Dubai has installed the region’s first monorail system. Qatar has started the Doha Metro project. Similar projects are taking place in other GCC countries as well. Besides, such industries as airlines, hotels and tourism are likely to grow because of the inflow of sports enthusiasts. The region is likely to be transformed into a world class sports hub and possibly host major sports events in the future. This will not only promote sports culture, but will also support economic development in the region. Hosting a large number of high class sports events in the region will definitely attract a lot of sports fans. For example, the Match of Champions [...] was held in Qatar in 2016. The large number of football fans that visited Qatar to attend the match illustrates the value that sporting events can have for the tourism sector in Qatar. And let us not forget that sports tourists also travel for sports education and sportsrelated business events, as well as to improve their health and well-being. Development of all these sectors will definitely help to attract sports tourists in the region. 22 APRIL 2017
