In the first quarter (Q1) of the year, Sharjah International Airport (SIA) recorded significant year-on-year improvements in passenger traffic, up two percent, and aircraft movements, which grew three percent compared to Q1 2016.

uring the period under review, the hub welcomed 2.74 million passengers, continuing the increasing figures observed in the past five years. January was a particularly strong month, with a four percent year-on-year boost in passenger traffic. The strategic location of the hub and its connectivity to the country’s seven emirates has been a catalyst for its growth, making it a convenient spot for both business and leisure travellers. Aiming to welcome 25 million passengers by 2027, Sharjah Airport Authority recently appointed Parsons Overseas to oversee a USD400 million expansion project.

harjah Business Summit 2017, recently organised by Gulftainer, put a spotlight on transport and logistics innovations in Sharjah, highlighting the emirate’s investment potential. The event was a platform for the latest industrial projects to be presented, such as Gulftainer’s land bridge, linking seaports to inland container depots, Sharjah Municipality’s new cargo-clearing procedures and Sharjah Ports Authority’s customs clearance e-portal, among others, demonstrating the emirate’s ability to develop advanced solutions and reinforcing its status as the UAE’s key industrial hub. Through interactive presentations and discussions, the summit stimulated a dialogue between the industry’s experts for further acceleration of the business growth in the emirate.

T

he second installment of Abu Dhabi Tourism & Culture Authority’s contribution to the restoration of the Château de Fontainebleau’s Imperial Theatre will see the final phase of restorative works begin in June. The first phase was completed in April 2014, with a revamped main auditorium. The upcoming works, set to be completed in 2019, will focus on the upper levels of the salons and the podium. The theatre, based in France, was renamed as the Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan Theatre in recognition of the funding and forms part of an agreement between French and Emirati governments, which also concerns Louvre Abu Dhabi.

mman has been officially named as this year’s capital of Islamic culture following the announcement by Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO). As explained by Abdul Aziz Twaijri, president, ISESCO, Jordan’s flourishing modern capital has earned the title by fulfilling the criteria which require the designated city to boast rich cultural and historic heritage, including cultural sites and institutions with a track record of organising cultural events. Commending Jordan’s continuous support for ISESCO, Twaijri further revealed that Amman will enjoy a year-long cultural programme, set to be launched in partnership with Jordan’s Ministry of Culture.

UNWTO Invests in Biodiversity Conservation

n the occasion of the International Day for Biological Diversity, celebrated on May 22, World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) launched a capacity building programme dedicated to sustainable tourism and biodiversity protection in Western and Central African countries. Aiming to address issues related to conservation and environmental protection in order to safeguard future opportunities for local people, a number of seminars will begin in June. Through the training sessions, UNWTO expects to continue to strengthen capacities of tourism stakeholders so they gain a better understanding of the relationship between tourism and environmental protection, while developing tourism products based on the area’s unique biodiversity. Tourism employees and small entrepreneurs will be the primary beneficiaries of the initiative.

In an attempt to boost the growth of infrastructure sector in Abu Dhabi, Abu Dhabi Airports has recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Musanada, an Abu Dhabi-based general services company.

ITA Lab has unveiled KATE, a robotic checkin kiosk that will autonomously move to busy or congested areas in the airport with the aim of relegating check-in queues. Using various data sources, including flight and passenger flow information, KATE can identify where additional check-in kiosks are required to reduce passenger queue times, whilst utilising existing SITA data systems such as Day of Operations Business Intelligence and FlightInfo API. Multiple robotic kiosks can be automatically or manually deployed simultaneously and in formation to assist passengers and provide airports and airlines with greater flexibility in managing peaks in passenger flow. They communicate through a Cloud service to ensure that the correct number of kiosks are at the right position when needed.

iming to facilitate cooperation and knowledge exchange between the two companies by launching workshops with relevant expertise from both parties, the MoU details the processes for securing human resources and labour in the service, technical and management sectors. he Guinness World Record for the longest underwater live radio broadcast was performed in the shark-infested waters of The Ambassador Lagoon aquarium located at Atlantis, The Palm, Dubai on May 13. The world record was awarded for a total of five hours, 25 minutes and 25 seconds of live radio conducted by 104.8 Channel 4. The previous record of four hours, 43 minutes and 54 seconds was beaten thanks to a special helmet which allowed the presenter to breathe and enabled clear live radio transmission from a depth of 2.9m. The attempt was launched as a part of the resort’s campaign A World Away From Your Everyday, emphasising the importance of creating extraordinary memories.

Nakheel Reveals The Palm Getaway

akheel has signed a construction contract worth approximately AED1.5 (USD407.7 million) billion for The Palm Gateway, a three-tower property at the foot of Palm Jumeirah, with Shapoorji Pallonji Mideast appointed to carry out the work. Construction is set to begin in the second quarter of this year, and is forecast to be completed in two and a half years. The project includes 1,265 luxury apartments across the three high-rise buildings and is to be built on top of the existing Palm Monorail terminal, thus incorporating 14 levels of parking spaces. Units at the waterfront complex will range from one- to three-bedrooms and will be surrounded by retail, dining, health and fitness facilities, including parks, pools, and sports courts.

Qatar Airways Prioritises Safety On May 16 – 18, International Air Transport Association (IATA) Cabin Operations Safety Conference in Doha brought together more than 200 representatives from the aviation sector, to discuss and share cabin safety practices.

elebrating the 10th anniversary of its first Australian itinerary Abu Dhabi – Sydney, Etihad Airways has announced that all 14 weekly routes will enjoy its flagship Airbus A380 aircraft as of October 29. The current daily A380 flight to the destination will be joined by a second daily superjumbo service, featuring the carrier’s exclusive threeroom suite, The Residence. With the deployment of the 496-seat double decker, Sydney will join London and New York as the airline’s all-A380 itineraries. ir Cairo has announced the launch of a new itinerary from Sharm El Sheikh International Airport to Copenhagen Airport, set to take-off on June 27. The new service, to be operated with an Airbus A320 once a week, will boost the Egyptian low-cost carrier’s summer schedule and will offer improved accessibility and travelling options during the holiday period. The airline’s route expansion is in line with the governmental strategy to improve regional and international air connectivity to Egypt, in a bid to revive the country’s tourism by attracting higher influx of visitors.

oyal Jordanian (RJ) has signed a multi-year agreement with Sabre, according to which the global technology distributor will provide the carrier with technology and consultancy solutions. Through the suite, which includes Schedule Manager, Slot Manager, Profit Manager, and Fleet Manager, RJ will be able to optimise its operations. Furthermore, the airline will enjoy more accurate forecasting and analysis of its network, enabling more efficient aircraft deployment. mirates has announced the introduction of the third daily service from Dubai to Brisbane, set to take-off on December 01. Increasing the weekly inbound and outbound capacity on the route by 3,724 seats, the direct flight will be operated with Boeing B777-200LR. Along with more flexible travelling options, the service will offer passengers in the UK, France and North America a greater access to Australia with only one stop at Dubai International. Committed to constantly improving its services, the new schedule follows the announcement of an upgrade on the carrier’s third daily service to Melbourne from a B777-300ER to its signature Airbus A380.

or the first time in the Middle East, Deer Jet showcased its 787 Dream Jet during a stopover at Hamad International Airport, as part of a series of displays in key international charter destinations titled Dreams Encounter the World. The Chinese premium jet operator is dedicated to serving the global business travel market, including the GCC and wider Middle East region, with buyers from Qatar, the UAE and Saudi Arabia expected to be key markets for the company. While highlighting the potential for premium travel in the Middle East, Frank Fang, vice president, Deer Jet, noted that the company plans to expand within the region.

Speaking ahead of the event, Suleiman Obeidat, CEO, RJ, highlighted that the forum will be a good opportunity for the airline to boost its network capacity and reach promising markets. mirates has recently announced that all of its weekly routes to Beijing Capital International Airport and Shanghai Pudong International Airport will enjoy its flagship Airbus A380 aircraft, as of July 01. In response to popular customer demand, the move is expected to increase capacity to both Chinese cities. With the deployment of the 519-seat double-decker, passengers will have the opportunity to enjoy more seamless connections between the destinations and over 30 international points via Dubai International, including 18 gateways in the UK and Europe. Furthermore, the additional seats will support more business and leisure travel departing from, and arriving in China.

Royal Air Maroc Enhances Links to US

orocco’s national carrier, Royal Air Maroc, has recently unveiled plans to increase its weekly service between Mohammed V International Airport and Washington Dulles International Airport. In line with growing demand from local residents, tourists and corporate travellers to enhance connectivity to Casablanca, the airline upgraded its current offering from three to four times weekly service. Set to commence on October 31, the itinerary will be operated with Boeing 787-8. Royal Air Maroc already offers services to a number of US locations, including New York, Boston and San Francisco.

audia Airlines (SAUDIA) has introduced a system which enables guests to manage and modify bookings in the event of a service disruption beyond the airline’s control. Without additional charges, the carrier will inform passengers through a mobile text message about a service delay or cancellation on the basis of which travellers will be able to accept or modify their reservations though the airline’s website. Instilled in its core values, the company aims to elevate its client service and provide seamless solutions from the beginning until the end of a journey.

övenpick Hotels & Resorts is set to open Mövenpick Hotel Sylhet Bangladesh, a 210-room hotel located in one of the country’s main commercial and tourism centres in the country's northeast. Scheduled to open its doors in the third quarter of 2018, the hotel will feature a retail wing, rooftop infinity swimming pool and spa. A fitness centre, tennis court and bowling alley will complement the adjacent 1,171m2 of retail space. In addition, the hotel will feature an all-day dining restaurant, specialty bistro and lounge, coupled with a well-equipped business centre and what is said to be the city’s largest meeting rooms, appealing to the region’s growing number of business travellers.

n recognition of the travel industry’s significant contributions to the state, Doug Burgum, governor, North Dakota, US, declared May 07 – 13 as the North Dakota Travel and Tourism Week. The week-long initiative was held in conjunction with the U.S. Travel Association’s National Travel and Tourism Week, an annual spotlight on the industry. Nationally, the travel industry contributes USD2.3 trillion to the US economy, with one in every nine jobs in the country depending on it. In 2015, North Dakota welcomed 22 million visitors who spent USD3.1 billion across the state, making tourism a key industry in driving the state’s economy.

YC & Company, New York City’s official destination marketing organisation, held a press conference in Toronto, kicking off a threecity Canadian sales mission to destination which also included visits to Quebec City and Montreal. At the press event, Fred Dixon, CEO, NYC & Company, presented the highlights of New York City, including developments in hotels, attractions, dining, and retail, to influential Canadian audiences at Thompson Toronto. Furthermore, the company announced a new international communications and marketing initiative titled New York City – Welcoming the World. The sales mission provided a platform for member organisations to form relationships though meetings with the travel trade.

ureStay Hotel Group has confirmed its first ever Asian hotel, expected to open in downtown Bangkok in the fourth quarter of this year. With construction work having commenced in late 2016, SureStay Plus Sukhumvit 2 is a brand new 85-room premium economy hotel under development, to be managed and operated by the Best Western Hotels & Resorts subsidiary. “Asia is an incredibly diverse and dynamic hotel market, but one common trend we are seeing is the demand for branded economy and lower-midscale accommodation in key cities across the region. SureStay Hotel Group is perfectly positioned to fill this gap in the market,” elaborated Olivier Berrivin, managing director, international operations, Asia, Best Western.

ccording to preliminary statistics released in May by Hawaii Tourism Authority (HTA), visitors to the state spent a total of USD1.4 billion in March, an increase of 12.3 percent compared to March 2016. The Japanese market contributed to the growth in visitor spending, up 20.8 percent to USD187.2 million, driven by yearover-year increases visitor days, up 13.1 percent as well as a 3.6 percent boost in average length of stay, and a 6.9 percent rise in daily spending to USD228 per person. In March, daily spending statewide averaged USD201 per person, up from USD182 in 2016, while arrivals increased 2.1 percent to 802,802, with Japan again generating the highest rate of growth 9.1 percent amounting to 136,735 visitors.

ction Hotels has selected Novotel as the brand partner for its fourth Australian hotel, Novotel Melbourne South Wharf, located at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre. The property, boasting 347 rooms, 30 more keys than originally announced, is pegged to open in the first quarter of 2018, and is set to become the second largest hotel in the group’s portfolio. etBlue Airways announced a series of newly expanded nonstop routes on its Boston and Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood itineraries, as the airline continues to boost its presence in the northeastern US and Florida. From Boston Logan International Airport, the carrier will add flights on three daily routes to Jacksonville International Airport, Palm Beach International Airport, and Southwest Florida International Airport as of October 29. Furthermore, the airline will also launch daily direct services between Fort LauderdaleHollywood International Airport and Salt Lake City International Airport on November 16.

nterContinental Hotels Group (IHG), announced that the concrete foundations of the new InterContinental Minneapolis-St. Paul Airport hotel have been completed, marking a construction milestone. The project, led by Graves Hospitality and Intercontinental Real Estate Corporation, broke ground in October 2016. On track to open in 2018, the 291-key property will be set across 12 floors and will connect with the airport’s Terminal 1-Lindbergh via a climate-controlled sky bridge linked to concourse C, where it will intersect with the other concourses. The hotel will boast its own security checkpoint, a penthouselevel observation bar, an InterContinental Club Lounge, a business centre and 1,858m2 of meeting space.

eveloped under eco-friendly principles, Marriott International announced the opening of Element Kuala Lumpur, marking the brand’s Southeast Asian debut. Designed by Foster+Partners, the 252-key property incorporates open-plan studios along with single and multi-room suites with city skyline and hill views, each with spa-inspired bathrooms, alongside intuitive technology such as daylight glare control to filter appropriate amounts of sunlight. In collaboration with IB Hotel Management, the hotel is housed within Ilham Tower, making it one of the tallest eco-conscious hotels which also boasts Green Building Index certification. Sustainability initiatives include a rainwater harvesting system, indoor air quality CO2 monitor and energy-efficient LED lighting.

usit International has signed a hotel management agreement with Dhanasansombut Development, to operate the first hotel in the heart of Bangkok’s Chatuchak Market, also known locally as Jatujak. Forming part of a new mixed-use complex, Mixt Chatuchak, will boast approximately 250 rooms and is strategically located close to two mass transit rail stations. Suphajee Suthumpun, group CEO, Dusit International, enthused that with several exciting developments set to open near the market within the next few years, the new hotel will be perfectly positioned to meet the needs of the young, sophisticated travellers who visit the area seeking an authentic experience.

laimed to be the first factory converted hotel in Kowloon Bay, Camlux Hotel has recently celebrated its grand opening. The six-storey address boasts 173 keys, 10 Family Rooms and two Studio Rooms as well as Café 15, meeting and conferences spaces and a gym. Key design features of the property include a three-part mosaic on the upper walls of the foyer in the lobby area, decorated with stainless steel discs used to produce vacuum flasks as a tribute to its heritage. “Being a conversion project, the management team embraced the inherent limitations and constraints to create an interesting spatial experience, in terms of room configurations and viewing aspects for our guests [...],” pinpointed Calvin Wong, general manager, Camlux Hotel.

TRAVEL TRADE WEEKLY: In your personal opinion, what sets Sharjah as the ideal holiday destination for those seeking a family getaway? GHASSAN FARHAT: Sharjah has a unique ambiance meeting all the needs [of] the families especially the ones coming from the GCC, from the first moment you arrive to your furnished apartment or hotel, going to the parks or activities and restaurants, not to forget the special events that Sharjah, [leading] the way in cultural activities such as The Book Fair and Ramadan activities.

Sharjah are a lot, starting from the cultural museums – more than two museums that show a lot about Sharjah and the UAE’s heritage and history – going through the Al Majaz Water Front, reaching to Sharjah Aquarium, not to mention Al Qasba area which is Sharjah's landmark now, as it has a lot of activities throughout the seasons and during week days or weekends, you can find it very active and entertaining for [family] getaways in Sharjah. TRAVEL TRADE WEEKLY: What can guests look forward to in the near future regarding new plans or offerings? GHASSAN FARHAT: As a standard furnished apartment, we are trying our best to meet all guests' needs, in the hotel while they stay with us, and outside as they come to entertain themselves, as they will require logistics assistance, so we provide free drop and pickup to and from major shopping malls in Sharjah on a scheduled bus. At the same time, we provide special packages for families that would like to spend some time on the beach – due to our proximity to the beach – on the other hand, we have special packages that are related to some family activities like the Al Muntazah Water Park or Sharjah City Tour Bus. TRAVEL TRADE WEEKLY: How was business in the first quarter of the year? GHASSAN FARHAT: [Quarter one] business on the books is the same if not better than 2016. In some areas, [we were] affected a lot by the happenings and holidays in the GCC countries main market feeder. Main contributor to keep up the story of [our] success, is the consistency to implement Sharjah's activity annual calendar and the deep belief that Sharjah is the safest place for a family to travel to regardless of the age. 3 JUNE 2017

azeera Airways has concluded the successful sponsorship of the 11th Kuwait Times Photography Competition titled Kuwait Scenery, which attracted over 150 participants who submitted some 900 artworks.
