Jazeera Airways’ operating profit soared 22.9 percent year-on-year to KWD2.2 million (USD7.29 million) in the second quarter of this year (Q2), while its net profit reached KWD2.3 million (USD7.62 million), a rise of 18.1 percent.

T

he carrier’s best quarter since Q2 2009 was attributed to higher utilisation, improved network planning as well as strong travel demand. Compared to Q2 2016, load factor rose 1.5 percent to 73.3 percent, while operating revenue jumped 9.5 percent to KWD14 million (USD46.4 million). Despite this success, slowing macro economy and overcapacity in the first quarter resulted in a 77.3 percent decrease net profit during the first half of the year, to KWD1.2 million (USD3.98 million). Both operating revenue and operating profit also fell, down 2.4 percent and 65.2 percent, respectively.

WEEKLY NEWS HOTEL PERFORMANCE

Sharm El Sheikh Welcomed Influx of Tourists

Hotstats’ latest report MENA Chain Hotels Market Review June 2017 indicated a challenging month for hotels across the region and in Abu Dhabi, while Sharm El Sheikh reported remarkable growth.

T

hanks to a surge in both Arab and domestic visitors in June, properties in Sharm El Sheikh achieved a 324.1 percent year-on-year climb in RevPAR to USD12.13, led by a 13.8 percentage point increase in occupancy to 30.1 percent. The uplift in volume also facilitated growth in nonrooms revenue, including a 175.3 percent jump in food and beverage, which contributed to the 239.3 percent boost in total RevPAR to USD20.22. Despite these exceptional results, revenue levels were not sufficient to outweigh the high costs which meant hotels in the resort town recorded an USD1.50 loss in gross operating profit per available room for the month.

Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi Continued to Suffer

Ramadan Affected MENA Hotel Performance

W

hile hotels in the MENA region achieved an overall year-on-year increase of 2.9 percent in gross operating profit per available room to USD44.55 in June, the impact of Ramadan and Eid Al-Fitr meant that performance levels were some of the lowest in the past 12 months. Most notably, occupancies across the region plummeted to 47.9 percent, well below the rolling average of 63.6 percent record in the 12 months to June. Doha and Kuwait particularly suffered with occupancy levels of 42.1 percent and 35.5 percent, respectively. Compared to June 2016, RevPAR jumped 3.5 percent to USD88.84, while total RevPAR rose 1.7 percent to USD163.60. Yet, profit per room for the month was 44.7 percent below the average for the 12 months to June, at USD80.68.

2 SEPTEMBER 2017

I

n June, hoteliers in Abu Dhabi recorded a monthly fiveyear low in RevPAR, which stood at USD49.96, 48.7 percent below the average for the previous 12 months, and a drop of 0.7 percent in year-on-year comparisons. Occupancy was 51 percent, while total RevPAR fell 8.1 percent to USD109.61. Despite a 16.6 percent increase in gross operating profit per available room (GOPPAR) over June 2016, properties across the capital reported a loss of USD5.09. The month punctuated a challenging six months for hotels across the emirate, with year-to-date declines in key metrics, including a 13.8 percent decline in GOPPAR to USD51.71, resulting in profit conversion falling to just 28.1 percent of total revenue in the first half of the year.

RENDEZVOUS

jobs worldwide. This shows how significant Muslim travel is and what great impact Muslim travellers have on the global economy.

Q & A with

TRAVEL TRADE WEEKLY: How many members in each category of Salam Standard Certification do you have? How does this compare to 2016?

FAEEZ FADHLILLAH CEO, SALAM STANDARD

WITH THE NUMBER OF MUSLIM TRAVELLERS SET TO RISE TO 156 MILLION BY 2020, THE TOURISM INDUSTRY IS ADAPTING TO CATER TO THEIR FAITH-BASED REQUIREMENTS. FAEEZ FADHLILLAH, CEO, SALAM STANDARD, EXPLAINS HOW INDUSTRY PROFESSIONALS CAN MEET THE NEEDS OF THIS GROWING MARKET.

FAEEZ FADHLILLAH: We are having approximately 55,000 hotels indexed on Salam Standard. A big majority of those hotels reach bronze certification, especially in non-Muslim majority countries. The rest is evenly distributed between silver and gold. The ratio of this distribution did not change significantly over the past two years, although we have quite a big number of hotels which upgrade their facilities for Muslim travellers and were bronze in one year and reach gold in the next year. This shows that many hotels realise the importance and significance to their own revenue, booking numbers and satisfaction of their guests to provide for this group of travellers too and not sideline them. TRAVEL TRADE WEEKLY: What are considered to be the most important factors for Muslim travellers when choosing accommodation? FAEEZ FADHLILLAH: According to our Salam Standard survey, where we asked 5,000 Muslims from different countries and cultures around the world, the most important factors for Muslim travellers when choosing their accommodation are the availability of certain Muslimfriendly features. Very important is the availability of Halal food – or the possibility to pre-order halal food before arrival – as well as the possibility to get a praying mat and the praying direction.

www.traveltradeweekly.travel

Many see the possibility to remove alcohol from the mini-bar or a full alcoholfree room as an important feature too. In terms of destination, the reputation of a place of being Muslim-friendly or not is becoming more important for Muslims to choose. As well as the overall safety of the holiday destination. TRAVEL TRADE WEEKLY: With the number of Muslim travellers expected to soar in the coming years, what more can be done to meet their needs? FAEEZ FADHLILLAH: Hotels can increase their facilities and services for Muslim travellers to attract them to their hotel. The possibility of getting Halal food in a hotel is certainly a key factor. But even with little investment the service level of accommodation towards Muslim travellers can be increased significantly by providing praying mats, a Quran or the praying timetable and direction at the place. I think more and more hotels will realise, that the service level and satisfaction of guests from many background matters and will make provisions for them. In terms of destinations I think the need of Muslim infrastructure is certainly an important factor, like public praying places at popular points or the number of Halal restaurants at a destination. It is also certainly a plus point for any destination to advertise their Muslim-friendly services to current and future guests well, so that they know what is available. Muslim services need to become an integral and naturally available part of the global hospitality industry, and every industry player which is offering them, will eventually see the positive effects for their business, brand and customer satisfaction.

TRAVEL TRADE WEEKLY: How valuable is the Muslim travel market? FAEEZ FADHLILLAH: The global Muslim travel market is one of the fastest segment of travel. Based on Salam Standard’s The Global Economic Impact of Muslim Tourism 2015/2016 Report, Muslim travel contributed more than USD136 billion towards the global economy in the year 2015, creating more than four million
