EDITOR ’S LETTER

The seasons have been great fodder for songwriters over the decades. Here Comes The Sun references the ‘ice is slowly melting’ as the weather warms up. John Denver crooned ‘sunshine on my shoulders makes me happy’, while Katrina and The Waves' Walking on Sunshine is a feel good number. California Dreamin’ saw the Mamas and Papas harmonising angelically about ‘all the leaves are brown and the sky is grey’, as the summer waves goodbye and winter announces its intentions. Taylor Swift, Michael Bublé, The Doors, and Ariana Grande have all warbled about winter, but the most famous song belongs to Idina Menzel, the prolific earworm, Let it Go. ‘The cold never bothered me anyway’.

Travel is often based around the seasons, whether you long to ski or snowboard down snowy slopes, release your inner child in a pile of discarded autumn leaves, feel the promise of summer with a riot of spring blooms or let summer work its magic in tropical escapes that soothe the soul.

No matter which season floats your boat, Travel Associates can curate your dream holiday. Our 300+ experienced Travel Advisors – with an average of at least 10 years’ travel experience under their belts – know that every client is after a different experience, with individual travel styles and tastes. Perhaps you want a winter warmer, an Antarctic sojourn or a spring fling.

Pick up the phone and start chatting to the Travel Associates team about where in the world you would like to go. Once booked, you can travel with confidence, knowing that your travel advisor has taken care of every little detail.

Which season are you planning for? The time to plan and book is now.

A SYMPHONY of SEASONS

From summer’s warmth to winter’s embrace, there are many ways to celebrate the seasons. Here are some of our favourites.

8

SHOULD YOU find yourself in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania in the middle of the night on February 2, your attention will be solely on a groundhog, also known as a marmot and a woodchuck. But this particular groundhog, Punxsutawney Phil, emerges from his hibernation home on Gobbler’s Knob to the adoring eyes of hundreds of locals who want to know if Phil can see his shadow or not. If he does see his shady self, he will go back into hibernation as it means winter’s chill will continue for another few weeks, putting spring on the backburner. If he does not see his shadow, spring is on the way and he’ll stay above ground. This Groundhog Day tradition is not just celebrated here, it is also a thing around the US and Canada, but it is the most celebrated thanks to the famous movie starring Bill Murray and Andie MacDowall. Phil doesn’t always get it right, but it is worth going to take part in all the events around town.

Venice unmasked

Experience the magic of Venice during the Carnival Festival, a two-week extravaganza signalling the end of winter. In 2025 the dates will be 22 February to 4 March, with highlights of the event, that dates back to 1162, ranging from the Water Parade to the Festa delle Marie. Not forgetting the elaborate and exquisite costumes and masks that people wear, to help transform Venice into a world of celebration. For the best people watching head to St Mark’s Square.

A Vivid winter

In the cool nights of winter, Sydney pulls the switch on the world’s biggest festival of light, music and ideas. Running for 23 nights from 24 May – 15 June 2024, Vivid Sydney will shine with striking displays from some of the brightest light artists in the world over an eight km stretch, incredible live music performances, discussions with thought leaders, and innovative food experiences along with night markets, street performances, music concerts and more. This year the theme is ‘Humanity’, and when the lights come on at 6pm every night, the beauty of the shared experiences will spark wonder, connection and reflection.

9

Colouring in

The Hindu spring festival of Holi in India is also about new beginnings. Festivities commence with a symbolic bonfire representing the triumph of good over evil, followed by a jubilant burst of powdered pigment and coloured water to celebrate the coming of spring. This truly is a psychedelic free-for-all, with joyous revellers singing and dancing in a kaleidoscopic spray of colour.

Soak it up at Songkran

What better way to see out the old year and welcome in the new lunar year, than with giant water fights! Songkran runs for three days and is Thailand’s biggest and most important festival. Meaning ‘astrological passage’ in Sanskrit, Songkran was recently listed as part of UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage. The UNESCO inscription says: “Pouring water is a significant act during Songkran, symbolising cleansing, reverence and good fortune,” so that is what you do. Squirt away to your heart’s content.

10

Midnight sun in Norway

Imagine if there was no night, no darkness, just light for 24 hours a day. There are so many things locals and visitors can do in the midnight hours. Go for a kayak, have a swim at the beach, go fishing, hiking, whale watching, and if you’re in Tromsø, see a midnight sun concert in the Arctic Cathedral. Sleeping when it is light is difficult, so embrace the experience and join the Norwegians who make the most of it.

Aloft in Albuquerque

The largest hot air balloon festival in the world, Albuquerque’s International Balloon Fiesta sees the skies of New Mexico fill with upwards of 600 hot air balloons in every shape and colour. In addition to the enchanting sight of a sky full of hot air balloons, the October celebration’s evening balloon "glows,” balloon stunts, live music performances and a feast of traditional New Mexican cuisine make this festival of flight a unique and unforgettable experience. This year, it will take place from 5–13 October.

WE RECOMMEND

ENCHANTED NEW MEXICO WITH THE ALBUQUERQUE BALLOON FIESTA

Watch hot air balloons take flight en masse in a sky streaked with hues of pinks, purples, and orange at the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta on this uplifting New Mexico holiday. As well as a sky full of balloons, enjoy five-star accommodation and VIP sightseeing tours of Santa Fe and the spectacular canyons and mesa country of the Bandelier National Monument on this six-day adventure.

Day of the Dead

Mexico’s Dia de los Muertos – Day of the Dead – is a celebration that pays respects to loved ones who have passed on. On 1–2 November 2024, prepare for elaborate altars adorned with marigolds, candles, and photos of the departed. By night, the city comes alive with parades and processions as people don elaborate costumes and paint their faces like skulls in a celebration of the cycle of life. Undoubtedly, this is one of the most fascinating autumn festivals in the world.

WE RECOMMEND

MEXICO’S DAY OF THE DEAD

Celebrate Mexico’s bizarre and beautiful festival, Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), in the eclectic city of Oaxaca on this exciting seven-day small group tour. Immerse yourself in local traditions and fabulous feasts celebrating the dead, while exploring the stunning landscapes and famous flavours of Oaxaca including moles, tlayudas and mezcal.

‘‘Day of the Dead is unlike anything I have seen before. It is a lively combination of colour, sadness, party and joy, all wrapped up in an important Mexican cultural celebration. It was surreal to don a full corpse costume complete with makeup to join a sea of devils, vampires and assorted creatures.”

THE

ROCKIES

through the looking glass

In partnership with Rocky Mountaineer
14

For scenic viewing with a lavish serving of luxury, Rocky Mountaineer is a wonderful way to sightsee in Canada’s beautiful British Columbia and Alberta, or in the USA in Colorado and Utah.

EYES ARE PEELED and we are in full ‘I don’t want to miss anything mode’ onboard the awardwinning luxury Rocky Mountaineer train traversing Western Canada, showcasing stunning scenery and engineering marvels.

From the moment we settle back in our generously sized seats in GoldLeaf Service, you can feel the excitement and anticipation from other passengers, who are also looking forward to this one-of-a-kind high-end train journey.

Rocky Mountaineer offers four rail routes, including three that connect Vancouver to the Canadian Rockies’ towns of Banff, Lake Louise and Jasper in Western Canada.

The fourth and newest route is in the USA, travelling between Denver, Colorado and Moab, Utah.

15
Mount Robson, Canada

‘‘ REAL

The thing

No matter how much you have read about Rocky Mountaineer or been engrossed in television documentaries about it, the grandeur of the scenery, and the comfort of the train is so much more than imagined. An informative entertaining commentary on this all-daylight train journey ensures we don’t miss anything and there is a lot to miss.

Tumbling waterfalls, meandering rivers, pristine lakes and deep canyons catch our eye from the train where the five-star scenery is matched by the five-star service. Onboard hosts are excellent and relate tales about passing landmarks, top up our glasses and call out any wildlife sightings.

It’s a thrill watching the scenery through the panoramic windows of the bi-level glassdome rail car, and we love the large, exclusive outdoor viewing platform. You feel as if you could reach out and touch those mountains and you can smell the fragrant scents from nearby pine forests as the wind whistles by.

You hear all about how good the service is and how beautiful the scenery is on Rocky Mountaineer, but it is even better than expected. The spectacle out the window on the First Passage to the West from Vancouver to Banff is achingly beautiful and is matched by the calibre of the food and the friendly, informative service.”

WE RECOMMEND

BEST OF THE ROCKIES CIRCLE JOURNEY

Experience the best of the Canadian Rockies with this 14-night Circle Journey that combines the Rainforest to Gold Rush and First Passage to the West routes. Journey to Banff, where you’ll spend three nights, explore Lake Louise and Jasper before staying overnight in Whistler to soak up the majestic sights.

FINE DINING on rails

Dining is an adventure on Rocky Mountaineer with gourmet meals prepared by the onboard team showcasing the region’s excellent produce, whether in the lower-level dining room in GoldLeaf Service or in the comfort of your seat in SilverLeaf Service.

For breakfast, we start with a freshly baked pastry followed by a choice of classic Eggs Benedict, Lemon and Honey Buttermilk Pancakes, Coconut and Banana Chia Seed Pudding or Smoked Salmon Avocado Toast.

Lunch is another gourmet feast with an impressive menu starting with freshly baked garlic and herb focaccia and a choice of mains including Fraser Valley Chicken Paillard and Alberta Striploin Steak with a finale of delicious Chocolate Torte or Lemon Lavender Posset with an Earl Grey-flavoured macaron.

Nature stars on our journey and we are always on the lookout for bears, bighorn sheep, elk, wolves, coyotes, moose, beavers and other animals along the route between Vancouver and Jasper, Banff and Lake Louise. Look up and you might catch a glimpse of bald eagles and osprey. Like many, we spotted a couple of bighorn sheep with huge curly horns – indicative of males – perched on a mountain side.

WE RECOMMEND ROCKIES TO THE RED ROCKS AT LEISURE

This seven-day journey includes two nights in Denver, and two days on the legendary Rocky Mountaineer as it travels from Denver to Moab with a stop in the hot springs town of Glenwood Springs. From Moab, enjoy scenic tours of Arches and Canyonlands National Parks, Bryce Canyon, and Capitol Reef and Zion National Parks before arriving in Las Vegas

ON TRACK for holiday heaven

Rocky Mountaineer offers a multitude of packages to make your holiday dreams come true and is a match made in heaven with an Alaska cruise. Shoulder seasons in spring and autumn are excellent times to experience a journey, when you will be mesmerised by the beautiful vibrant colours of fall, or the increased wildlife sightings and floral blooms in spring.

The newest route is the two-day ‘Rockies to the Red Rocks’ journey, travelling through extraordinary landscapes between Denver, Colorado, and Moab, Utah, with an overnight stay in Glenwood Springs, Colorado. Highlights include vast canyons, deserts, natural archways and the enchanting Hoodoos which are tall, thin spires of rock formed by erosion.

Stoney Creek Bridge, Canada

The region is steeped in history with opportunities to explore the ever-changing scenery and iconic destinations. Extensive plains, mountain vistas and deserts shine as the train winds alongside towering canyons that have been carved away by the Colorado River.

It’s a contrast as you travel between the mile-high city of Denver and the red sandstone mountains of Moab. Ruby Canyon, Mount Garfield and crossing the Continental Divide are highlights as you settle into SilverLeaf Plus, exclusively available on 'Rockies to the Red Rocks'.

In Canada, routes include ‘Journey through the Clouds’ between Vancouver and Jasper, travelling through scenic valleys, along the mighty Fraser River, through Hell’s Gate, and past the stunning Pyramid Falls. This route also features the majestic Mount Robson, the highest peak in the Canadian Rockies.

If you are seeking extra train time and are after an even more relaxing trip, consider the three-day ‘Rainforest to Gold Rush’ route that leaves from the North Vancouver

Station, stopping in Whistler and Quesnel, and finishing in Jasper. The ‘First Passage to the West’ trip runs from Vancouver to Kamloops and finishes in Banff.

Rocky Mountaineer partners with some of the most lavish hotels in the regions it travels through such as Fairmont Banff Springs and other historic grand hotels. There’s also time to enjoy sightseeing adventures in some of the world’s most beautiful landscapes. As for engineering marvels, the section from Rogers Pass and Stoney Creek Bridge to the remarkable Spiral Tunnels, is considered the most difficult section on the Canadian Pacific Railway’s route, which cuts through the Rockies, leaving us in awe.

A Rocky Mountaineer train trip is just as much about the journey as the destination with stunning scenery and excellent dining and service that will entice you to return, again.

Speak to your Travel Associates Advisor to find out more about these spectacular Rocky Mountaineer journeys.

BEST TIME TO VISIT

Seasons IN THE Sun

Summer means different things to different people, from lazing on pristine beaches lapped by aquamarine water, to visiting popular cities that are in their low season in summer, which means less people and a better experience. Here are some of our summer loves.

GREEK ISLAND ODYSSEY

Greece is the word, when it comes to picturing sun-soaked islands caressed by cerulean seas and steeped in history. Santorini is a perennial favourite, with its labyrinthine alleys doglegging between stark white shops and hotels sitting pretty on the edge of a caldera.

In Mykonos, take a leisurely stroll through Little Venice, unwind at chic beach clubs, and savour fresh calamari at waterside cafes. To discover other island gems, venture to Paros, Naxos, Milos or Folegandros, all with liberal helpings of idyllic beach, clear blue water and Grecian pleasures. History lovers will want to spend time in Athens, with its many ancient treasures, and Ancient Olympia, birthplace of the Olympic Games.

20

WE RECOMMEND DEOS MYKONOS

Part of the Myconian Collection, Deos is a new property just a short walk from the town. The refined elegance of its suites with private pool, a superb spa and gym, and a panoramic deck with some of the best views, cocktails and fine dining on the island, add up to paradise.

No matter where you stay, you’ll have a front row seat to the Whitsundays' daily drama of sunrises and sunsets. VISIT VANCOUVER

While many pass through Vancouver enroute to a ski holiday in winter, visiting in summer is delightful. Temperatures are balmy, the city is blooming, the food scene is exceptional and there are many things to do. First stop should be Stanley Park, a 400-hectare park that is home to myriad trails through rainforest and a stunning seawall path that is perfect for cycling or strolling. Spend time at one of Vancouver’s 10 beaches, with Kitsilano one of the most popular, catch a ferry to Granville Island Public Markets for a veritable feast, do a boat tour from here to a seal colony, and make sure you visit the Capilano Suspension Bridge Park, with its Cliffwalk, suspension bridge and treetops adventure course in idyllic forest.

A RIVER RUNS THROUGH IT

For a European extravaganza away from the thrum of Central Europe, Portugal is a wonderful choice. Bathed in sunshine on the southwest corner of the continent, Portugal is an undiscovered jewel with an array of landscapes and experiences. From lively Lisbon with its stunning azulejo tiles, ‘remodelado’ trams, and the vibrancy of the Bairro Alto, to the leisurely delights of the Algarve, the hidden gems on the island of Madeira, and the walled town of Obidos, Portugal delivers on a massive scale. The city of Porto is the gateway to the Douro River, a rising star in the European river cruising scene thanks to its spectacular terraced vines in historic quintas – wine estates – dating back to 1756, along with several UNESCO World Heritage-listed sites.

WE RECOMMEND PORTUGAL, SPAIN AND THE DOURO RIVER VALLEY

Following the Douro River through Portugal and into Spain, this 11-day voyage takes you through dramatic landscapes, past steeply terraced hillsides, quaint villages and historic sights. Enjoy private tastings of port and explore Porto’s historic Ribeira district, home to traditional rabelo boats, cutting-edge cuisine and a thriving art scene, before visiting a few places in Spain and then Lisbon. Delights

A beacon of history, culture and vibrant urban life, the U.S. capital beckons with a dazzling array of experiences from iconic landmarks to culinary delights and world-class events.

In partnership with Washington, DC and Brand USA
Jefferson Memorial 32

‘‘AS WINTER wanes, Washington, DC, known for its iconic monuments and memorials, finds itself softened by the delicate bloom of cherry blossoms framing legendary landmarks with their billowy pink and white petals. The National Cherry Blossom Festival (running from late March to early April) is a fleeting masterpiece of candy floss pink and marshmallow white, the U.S. capital providing the largest canvas for cherry blossoms outside of Japan. Take a stroll along the city’s tranquil Tidal Basin and you’ll find yourself riding a wave of sweet fragrance, dappled sunlight filtering through the delicate petals, as nature's story unfolds, albeit briefly, against a backdrop of human achievement and ambition.

Beyond the allure of those blushing blossoms, the city's many gorgeous green spaces, including the sprawling Rock Creek Park, with its hiking, biking and horse-riding trails, along with the U.S. National Arboretum and Kenilworth Park & Aquatic Gardens, not only provide a peaceful escape from the city, but host a variety of outdoor activities.

Washington is a fabulous walkable city with enough sights and museums to fill a week. Don’t miss the Franklin D. Roosevelt Memorial which is away from the other stunning memorials and monuments. A private guided tour of Arlington National Cemetery with a returned serviceman will enhance your experience. Stay at the Hay-Adams, a place steeped in history and tradition. Make sure you head downstairs to the Off the Record Bar, with its luxe speakeasy vibe."

Museums and MONUMENTS A Capital FEAST

Washington, DC is liberally dotted with museums, memorials and monuments, but for culture vultures, the National Mall is the place to be, with an array of iconic sites including the towering Washington Monument and the larger-than-life Lincoln Memorial. Museums, many offering free admission, range from the grand to the utterly unconventional. Leading the charge are the Smithsonian museums, a collection of 17 museums and galleries including the National Zoo. Highlights of the collection include the National Air and Space Museum’s historic air and spacecrafts, the National Museum of Natural History’s astounding collection of dinosaur bones and the thoughtprovoking National Museum of African American History and Culture.

Delve into the intriguing world of espionage at the International Spy Museum, experience the impossible at the Museum of Illusions, celebrate the power and beauty of language in all its forms at the innovative Planet Word Museum and browse the National Gallery of Art’s breathtaking collection of global masterpieces.

From the innovative culinary creations at minibar by José Andrés and the refined ambience of Le Diplomate by Stephen Starr to Hell’s Kitchen DC, inspired by Gordon Ramsay’s popular television show, farm-to-table Ethiopian fare at Elfegne Ethiopian Restaurant and hip, new Filipino hotspot, Hiraya, DC's restaurants offer a veritable smorgasbord of flavour.

Epicureans will also enjoy exploring the city’s rooftop bars and restaurants, such as Moonraker, Upstairs at The Morrow, Top of the Gate and VUE, which not only provide exquisite meals but, with no building over 13 stories, unparalleled views of the capital's historic landmarks, waterfronts and lively streets.

Here are our top tips on how to best enjoy autumn across the Northern Hemisphere.

36 AU travelassociates.com | NZ travel-associates.co.nz
Forest of Quebec and Vermont, Canada

THE BRISK snap of autumn-scented morning air, the crunch of fallen leaves under your boots and the sweet tartness of apple cider complementing the fiery crimson, orange, and yellow leaves framing red-barn-dotted farmland and quaint villages with white church spires…This is Fall in Vermont.

Forests cover 70 per cent of this land-locked New England state. And much of this forest is made up of maples, which are the rockstars of the autumn colour kaleidoscope. Indeed, Vermont has more maple trees than any other American state. So, we’re talking being smack bang in the middle of a brilliant red bullseye.

Billboards are also banned. Instead, you’ll find signs for farm stands and woodworkers, pumpkin patches, and cheesemakers. It all makes driving its country roads such a pleasurable experience.

Route 100, a Vermont Scenic Byway which runs from the Canadian border to the Massachusetts’ state line, offers a particularly charming Fall touring option with characterfilled villages like Warren, Waitsfield, and Waterbury in the Mad River Valley and fiery Fall colours in the Green Mountain National Forest, not to mention multi-tonal autumn hues covering the ski slopes around Stowe, Killington, and Okemo.

There are so many other great leafpeeping places around the world. Here are a few suggestions to whet your appetite.

KYOTO, JAPAN

Move over cherry blossom season, Kyoto is also a sublime place to savour the changing leaves that frame this ancient imperial capital’s famous Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines. One of the best fall colour viewing spots is the Togetsu-kyo Bridge on the western outskirts of the city when the surrounding Arashiyama mountain forests explode with a riot of fall foliage. The nearby Tenryu-ji or Heavenly Dragon Temple has a large pond that reflects the surrounding maple trees.

‘‘PLITVICE NATIONAL PARK, CROATIA

September and October are ideal times to visit Plitvice National Park because the crowds have fallen away and being autumn, you can admire the yellow and orange hues of European hornbeams framing the waterfalls that cascade into the emerald waters of more than 16 lakes. Be sure and follow some of the paths

Bring your walking shoes and have your camera at the ready! Plitvice National Park is beautiful all year round, but it is a riot of colour in autumn. Finding a treasure like this is one of the joys of travel, and with its 16 lakes and waterfalls aplenty, with boardwalks to take in the view and the richness of the autumn colours, it is spellbinding."

OFF PEAK: OTHER SURPRISING AUTUMN ADVENTURES

While most of us think of New York City, there is an entire New York State out there waiting to be discovered. And there are so many fall colours to savour in the flaming forests of the wild Adirondack Mountains, the Finger Lakes region, the 1000 Islands Seaway, the Hudson River Valley, and the Catskill Mountains, just a hop, skip and a jump from Manhattan.

I LOVE NY’s team of 85 volunteer leaf spotters deliver on-location field observations for the State’s weekly fall foliage reports.

But back to the Big Apple. Fall is an invigorating season to visit with new shows opening on Broadway, new season clothes in the stores, new restaurants to try. And don’t forget that a carriage ride in Central Park delivers plenty of fiery leaf peeping with the magical backdrop of the city’s skyscrapers delivering the perfect pinch-me experience.

A FINE DROP

Wine regions around the world are also superb places to explore in autumn. There is, of course, the excitement of the grape harvest after which the vines start to turn exquisite shades of russet and crimson. Think Bordeaux’s grand wine chateaux, the rolling vine-covered hillsides of Tuscany, the mist-covered vineyards in California’s Sonoma Valley, the terraced vines along Portugal’s Duoro River and lots of autumn foodie treats, such as white truffle season in Piedmont.

EXPERIENCE THE NORTHERN LIGHTS IN LUXURY

In partnership with Hurtigruten & Tourism Yukon
40
There is no better illumination in nature than the Northern Lights, when skies become the plaything of an artist’s palette.

NOTHING QUITE prepares you for the first time you catch sight of the magnificent Northern Lights dancing across an inky black velvet sky in a kaleidoscope of colours. Neon green and bright yellow wisps of colour star on the big black stage in the Northern Hemisphere and if you are lucky, you may see strands of deep purple and indigo blue.

Rugged up with woolly gloves, warm hat and puffer jacket, we stand in awe as we watch the phenomenon, also known as the Aurora Borealis, a sister to the Aurora Australis, found in the Southern Hemisphere. My heart beats a little faster with excitement as we snap away on smart phones and cameras trying to capture one of the most spectacular displays in the night sky.

Science and mythological theories about the lights have intrigued, frightened and inspired mankind for centuries. Nordic legends claim the aurora is the breath of brave soldiers who died in combat, while a Sami legend believes they are caused by a magical fox running across the Ice Age glaciers.

The scientific explanation is that the lights are caused by magnetic storms triggered by solar activity, such as solar flares or coronal mass ejections. Energetic charged particles from these events are carried from the sun by the solar wind – different gasses present different colours.

Now that you know what causes the Northern Lights, start planning to see them, either on board a Hurtigruten ship in the oceans of the distant north, or in the wideopen wild spaces of The Yukon. Get set for a breathtaking experience.

Norway's shining star

THE ICONIC leader in Norwegian coastal voyages, Hurtigruten has been sailing and caring for the Norwegian coast since 1893, offering great opportunities to see the Northern Lights.

Hurtigruten has appointed Tom Kerss as the world’s first ‘Chief Aurora Chaser’, solidifying its status as the foremost authority in Northern Lights experiences.

Tom will give digital talks, webinars, and workshops, plus engaging and innovative guest-focused activities and events, to enrich the Aurora experience.

Hurtigruten has also extended its Northern Lights guarantee that guests will experience the natural wonder from mid-September, rather than October, for its upcoming season. It gives guests a second chance to experience the Northern Lights if they miss out on their original voyage of 11 days or more, giving guests the confidence that they’ll witness the bucket-list phenomenon.

The impressive Hurtigruten Museum in Stokmarknes is where you will find the colourful history of the company. The classic Hurtigruten ship MS Finnmarken from 1956

is preserved in a glass building resembling a massive ship in a bottle. Archives, photographs, and exhibitions chronicle the stories of the many people who made ‘The Coastal Express’, the icon it is today.

The new premium signature itinerary, ‘The North Cape Line’ – formerly known as the ‘North Cape Express’ – will offer a full voyage from Oslo to Bergen for the 2024–2025 season. It’s the first time ever sailing from Oslo, journeying between Norway’s southern and northernmost points.

As the Northern Lights dance through the longer nights, there will be exclusive excursions at 16 incredible destinations. A half voyage with shorter itineraries is also offered. Special experiences include seeing the northernmost part of Europe and experiencing the North Cape, while gazing out across the Barents Sea. There is no dry land between there and the North Pole, apart from the islands of Svalbard. You will also cross the Arctic Circle at sea.

Hurtigruten is also known for its sustainability focus and has plans to transform all seven ships with major green upgrades by 2025.

Spotlight on the wild Yukon

THE YUKON is a Northern Lights hotspot, located within the Aurora Oval, an area known for frequent and intense auroral activity. Located directly north of the Canadian province of British Columbia, to the east of Alaska and west of the Northwest Territories, the Yukon clocks up 240 days of Aurora Borealis activity as spectacular lights shimmer and wave across the night sky.

It is one of the best places to watch the Northern Lights in North America because of its close proximity to the magnetic poles. In fall, winter and even into spring, the skies come alive with nature’s greatest light show. Due to the Solar Maxx, an 11-year periodic cycle of the sun, the period between now and the winter of 2025/26 will be brighter than usual. The best season is August to April and the best chance of catching the lights is from 10pm to 3am.

Whitehorse, the capital of the Yukon, and the largest city in Northern Canada offers Northern Lights tours. The Yukon’s capital is a small city with a big backyard, and you can choose from a selection of tours, including the ‘Chasing Aurora’ tour, ‘Arctic Day: Aurora Viewing Evening’, and the five-day ‘Northern Winter Dream Adventure’ tour. The colours of the Northern Lights may well inspire you to create the perfect memento at Lumel Studios in Whitehorse. Glassblowing is fascinating, and here, the friendly staff will help you craft a wonderful souvenir.

Whitehorse is an adventure capital and activities abound, including dog sledding, snowmobiling, ice fishing, heli-hiking or flightseeing, with float planes taking off from nearby Schwatka Lake or the Yukon River to access more of the wilderness with stays in storybook cabins. Accommodation in Whitehorse includes the Raven Inn which has rustic yet elegant rooms in the heart of downtown while Black Spruce Cabins has four modern cabins perched in the Boreal Forest, just minutes by car from downtown Whitehorse.

‘‘What an experience it was to be in the Yukon. Seeing the wildlife at the Yukon Wildlife Preserve was incredible, from caribou and moose to bighorn sheep and elk. When night fell, we travelled to the Aurora Centre, and the guides gave so much information and also tips on how to photograph it. Seeing it, in living colour, was something to behold. Unforgettable.”

About 80 per cent of the Yukon is wilderness, with abundant wildlife and stunning scenery. And we mean abundant. Moose outnumber humans two to one, and there are just two humans for every bear in this beautiful, wild place.

As for scenery, the Southern Lakes is another place to add to your list and is home to the world’s smallest desert, cold-water lakes and warm-hearted communities. An interconnected group of lakes offers plenty of outdoor recreation and deep pockets of history and culture. It has a rich history of gold rush prospectors on Chilkoot Pass waiting to be discovered, then visit the sandy dunes of Carcross Desert and dip a toe in the clear waters of Bennett Lake. A great place to stay is Southern Lakes Resort which overlooks the stunning lake and lies within the Traditional Territory of the Carcross /Tagish First Nation.

The rugged beauty and vastness of The Yukon’s northern landscape includes Emerald Lake, Spirit Lake, and the Tatshenshini River. For stunning fall colours, head to Tombstone Territorial Park to experience the never-ending swaths of warm hues.

Between the Northern Lights and the Midnight sun, The Yukon’s colourful light seem to go on forever providing experiences that will remain with you for years.

BEST TIME TO VISIT

The best time to see the Northern Lights in the Yukon is August to April and with Hurtigruten, October to March.

Wonders of Alberta

The majestic sights of Banff, Lake Louise and Jasper, mixed with the urban cowboy delights of Calgary, add up to a living-in-a-postcard experience.

A VISION of frozen fractals lies before me, so ethereal it doesn’t seem real. Like a scene from a Disney animation, a castle made of ice sits upon a frozen lake, flanked by the soaring snow-capped peaks of the Canadian Rockies. Could there be a more beautiful setting to sit back in a horse-drawn sleigh to drink in the scenery? You can even strap on a pair of ice skates and glide across the frozen surface.

While in reality my motion is more akin to that of a lurching zombie, skating on Lake Louise is an enchanting way to embrace the Canadian winter, taking in some of the most spectacular scenery on the planet with fewer crowds than the iconic emerald lake receives in summer.

Mountain hub

Located in Alberta’s Banff National Park, easily accessed from Calgary, the airport gateway for the region, the small hamlet of Lake Louise is just 45 minutes’ drive from the lively mountain town of Banff – or a little longer, if you take the scenic wildlife corridor of Bow Valley Parkway. An experience in Lake Louise is centred around your choice of accommodation including dining and activities making the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise the most popular choice with its location on the lake. In Banff, you’ll find ample accommodation, from family-friendly chalets to cosy bed and breakfasts, as well as restaurants, bars and a diverse range of activities to keep the family busy. All tours for the national park depart from Banff.

CHILL FACTOR

Through the floor-to-ceiling glass, fat flakes are falling. This could herald the start of a haiku, a traditional nature-inspired Japanese poem, but here at Club Med Kiroro Peak it’s simply an expectation. Japan boasts over 500 resorts but Kiroro ski area is a snow magnet receiving Japan’s highest snowfalls with over 21 metres of snowfall annually (versus 14 metres in Niseko an hour away). It’s not just snow, but Ja-powder, Siberian winds combining with the cold waters surrounding Hokkaido Island to create flurries of famed light flakes.

And this is where the conundrum begins. Outside a plethora of runs await. Or shall I simply mindfully enjoy the Kuroge Wagyu Cross Karubi (a well-marbled thin sliced beef from the renowned Tokachi farm in Hokkaido) in one of the five restaurants and bars before wallowing in the on-site mineral laden onsen?

For Kiroro Peak isn’t just any Club Med, the entire resort is an Exclusive Collection (the highest luxury level in Club Med), saturated with luxury experiences from elevated dining to upscale room amenities and creating

space for regenerative experiences for those aged over 12yrs old. Bringing the kids and still seeking Exclusive Collection offerings? Then point your poles towards Val d’Isère, France.

VITAMIN SEA

But some prefer water liquid, not frozen. Perhaps a balmy 26 degrees. The Indian Ocean is not only a screen saver come to life of white sands, cerulean warm waters and vibrant coral but is home to two of Club Med’s most irresistible sun-soaked Exclusive Collection resorts, Club Med Finolhu Villas, in the paradise of the Maldives and Club Med Albion Villas, in action-wrapped Mauritius.

Club Med Finolhu Villas is one of the most stylish (and spacious) resorts in the Maldives; lounge on your deck watching 50 shades of ocean blues from one of the butler-served 52 eco chic luxury villas (each with private pool). Or do it all, (with 25 included and 25 ondemand activities) including yoga, jet skiing to a local village, snorkelling over coral gardens, sipping a personalised cocktail or hopping over to nearby Club Med Kani.

Like the Maldives, Mauritius is the home of luxury overwater villas, world-class scuba diving and snorkelling and exotic vistas. But the Club Med Albion Villas is one-of-a-kind, snuggled within a unique location, bordered by both sea and lush hills just 15 km from the dynamic and colourful capital Port Louis.

The pool of the multi-room thatched villa beckons, where a butler serves both breakfast and afternoon tea (and champagne at 6pm) but the tennis courts call, as does the Tamarina Golf Club green, with lush green mountain backdrop. Offspring need to be prised from the circus school at the

Children’s Club (the trapeze is a clincher) while the all-inclusive gourmet dining, nightly entertainment and water sports create a seamless holiday flow. An art of ease that Club Med created and have perfected over the past 70 years of holiday happiness creation.

For Mauritius, the ideal time to go is from mid-May to September, while for Maldives, visit between January and April. For skiing in France, and in Japan, go between December and April.

As for the skiing, I loved warming up my legs in the Solaise, tackling the Face de Bellevarde, and skiing down to the charming hamlet of Le Fornet. Lunch or après at Folie Douce is a must.”

SPRING FEVER

As the frost thaws and buds begin to bloom, spring ushers in renewal, along with some of the world’s most vivid travel experiences.

BLOOMING MARVELLOUS

There are few things that rival witnessing nature in celebration, and some of its most outrageously colourful parties unfold in spring in the world’s great gardens. Canada’s Butchart Gardens becomes a carpet of tulips, daffodils, and hyacinth, while the vast collection of plants at London’s Kew Gardens are like a living rainbow. Not to be outdone, France’s grandiose Versailles Gardens and Singapore’s futuristic Gardens by the Bay reveal meticulously curated floral displays.

Spring is the season of celebrated flower shows, the most famous of which is England’s Chelsea Flower Show. Hosted each May in the grounds of the Royal Hospital Chelsea, this floral extravaganza has been attracting exhibitors and visitors from around the globe, and royal patronage, since 1862. Australia enjoys its own annual celebration of flowers with Floriade, where over a million flowers blossom over the 40 hectares of Canberra’s Commonwealth Park.

Western Australia's wildflower season sees much of the state blanketed with bursts of blooms. Starting in June in the north of WA, by September, Perth's Kings Park and the Swan Valley shimmer with over 3,000 species of wildflowers. The spectacle peaks in October as the Margaret River Region blends the beauty of wildflowers with drops from its famed vineyards.

In the Netherlands, Amsterdam and the Keukenhof Gardens in Lisse are bright spots for tulip lovers, with millions of buds unfurling their petals in a riot of shades – a sight best enjoyed on a leisurely bike ride through the flower-draped countryside.

But perhaps the most famous floral fiesta of them all is cherry blossom season in Japan, South Korea, and Washington, DC. Profoundly symbolic, the cascading pink canopies of “Sakura” blooms draw throngs of people to witness their ephemeral beauty.

WE RECOMMEND TULIPS AND WINDMILLS: AMSTERDAM TO ANTWERP

Embark on a voyage from Amsterdam's canals to Bruges' belfry, exploring the Netherlands and Belgium on Uniworld’s elegant, 130-passenger River Princess. Savour extraordinary cuisine and immerse yourself in local culture as you explore charming villages, medieval towns, and colourful tulip fields along these scenic waterways.

WILD AWAKENINGS

Embark on a wildlife odyssey in Yellowstone National Park, renowned for its geothermal wonders, or head to Banff National Park in the Canadian Rockies, where majestic peaks overlook turquoise lakes, to watch bears emerging from winter's embrace, newborn cubs bumbling alongside their proud new mum.

Or watch a natural drama unfold where the endless plains of the Serengeti meet the sprawling grasslands of the Masai Mara in Africa. Spring sets the stage for the Great Migration, a rippling tide of over two million animals, mostly wildebeest and zebras. Among them, mothers nuzzle newborn calves as they take their first wobbly steps across the golden plains, while predators lie in wait, adding an electrifying dimension to the spectacle.

WE RECOMMEND ICONIC WILDLIFE OF YELLOWSTONE AND GRAND TETON

SPRING FLINGS

"In Morocco, the mystical allure of Chefchaouen's blue alleys and the timeless beauty of Wadi Rum's desert nights beckon travellers with tales of ancient history and vibrant culture. Climbing rugged rocks under the moon's gentle glow, visitors are transported to surreal landscapes transcending time itself. In Fez's narrow streets heavy with spice scents, engaging in the timeless art of haggling immerses travellers in Moroccan life."

In Morocco, spring unveils the country's attractions in all their splendour. The season is warm but pleasant, making it the perfect time to soak up the country’s mesmerising energy. Dive into Marrakesh’s vibrant Jemaa el-Fnaa square and labyrinthine souks stuffed with hand-woven rugs and aromatic spices. Explore the verdant Ourika Valley or take advantage of the pleasant weather to trek the jaw-dropping Atlas Mountains, secreting hidden gems in lush valleys.

Perhaps La Dolce Vita is more your holiday style. With the flowers out and the grass gorgeously green, spring paints the five villages that make up Italy’s Cinque Terre in swathes of joyous colour. The temperature is lovely too, making it ideal for exploring villages and the scenic trails that connect them, while still being warm enough for visitors to soak up the Mediterranean sun. In spring, New Zealand's wine regions beckon with promises of indulgent tastings, while the allure of outdoor adventure invites exploration by foot or bike along its emerald trails. And in Australia, Queensland invites visitors to explore pristine beaches and indulge in luxury resorts. From polar plunges to geothermal soaks, dive into one-of-a-kind shore excursions.

EXPLORING THE world by sea isn't all about ocean views and all-you-can-eat buffets (although those are certainly highlights). It's about the ports you visit and the meticulously crafted shore excursions that deeply connect you to destinations through experiences you might otherwise never have. From bonechilling Arctic plunges to the balmy bliss of French Polynesia, these one-of-a-kind shore excursions will have you swapping deckchairs for daring adventure.

66

Take THE POLAR PLUNGE

If you feel like following in the footsteps of explorers past and have a healthy tolerance for bone-chilling water, sign up for a polar plunge into the icy waters of the Arctic or Antarctic, surrounded by glaciers and perhaps a curious seal or two. Many cruise lines offer the polar plunge as a rite of passage for the adventurous. It's an immersive (literally) experience that few can claim to have braved. And while the shock will most certainly take your breath away, it will be immediately replaced by a euphoric sense of accomplishment, and a newfound appreciation for the ship's hot tub.

Soak IN ICELAND’S ETHEREAL BLUE POOLS

A land of otherworldly landscapes, Iceland's natural geothermal wonders are the stuff of legend. Among its most captivating treasures are its ethereal blue pools. The most famous of these is the Blue Lagoon, its steamy waters an almost supernatural shade of milky turquoise. Located in southwestern Iceland, around 30 minutes from Reykjavík, the mineral-rich waters are not only a balm for the soul but are reputed to have therapeutic properties for the body as well.

‘‘“Nothing gets the heart racing quite like being in a queue of equally nervous people about to throw themselves into icy water. The Polar Plunge is almost a rite of passage when doing an expedition cruise in polar regions. I was attached to a harness, and when it was my turn, just took the leap. The water temperature was 1°C, so yes, it was cold, but when back on board, warm and cosy in the hot tub, I felt amazing. It is definitely a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Do it!”

Face off WITH SHARKS AND RAYS IN FRENCH POLYNESIA

The translucent waters of French Polynesia are a technicolour wonderland teeming with an incredible array of marine life, including schools of often misunderstood stingrays and sharks. Go SCUBA diving for an exhilarating, up-close encounter with sleek blacktip reef sharks and graceful spotted stingrays, or if you don’t dive, opt for a snorkel tour to witness the beauty and elegance of these incredible creatures in their natural habitat is one that will be hard to top.

Swim WITH SEA LIONS IN THE GALAPAGOS

A living museum of natural history, a dip in the pristine waters of The Galapagos Islands provides a glimpse into the world that inspired Darwin himself. Just don’t be surprised if a graceful sea turtle glides by or a penguin (yes, penguin) pops up right alongside you. Adorable as they are, the local sea lion population are the real stars of this underwater show. These charismatic cuties, known for their playful inquisitiveness, frequently approach swimmers for a closer peek, offering visitors a rare and intimate connection with the wild.

The craggy cliffs of Scotland's Shetland Islands are home to a truly diverse range of wildlife, from shaggy Shetland ponies to otters, dolphins, and seals. But the undisputed stars of the Shetland Island show are its puffins. The comical seabirds, with their brightly coloured beaks and clumsy gait, offer a guaranteed dose of cute. Stay one step ahead of the weather’s whims and pack a storm-proof umbrella, ensuring your autumn adventures remain undampened and your explorations unhindered by unexpected downpours. For one of the the smallest travel umbrellas known to man, check out THE DAVEK MINI Umbrella, otherwise for a more refined feel nothing beats the iconic Oroton Parker Small Umbrella.
