With so many cruise lines to select from, we looked to Joel Katz, Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) Managing Director Australasia for his view on why luxury cruising remains the ultimate benchmark for clients. Katz agrees that cruising is back and has made a strong comeback worldwide.

“Luxury cruising is one of the most dynamic areas of the cruise industry and it’s where we’re seeing a lot of innovation and change. Cruise passengers are looking for new experiences and authentic encounters with local cultures, particularly in areas like food and wine, history and the arts. The luxury space is where we’re seeing a lot of creativity in these areas, as cruise lines work to give guests a much more intimate and memorable experience in the destinations they visit,” Katz commented.

There can be no doubt that the luxury brands are the changemakers and trend-setters in cruising, and importantly for Travel Associates’ clients, these companies are working harder than ever to offer perfectly personalised experiences to exceed expectations.

“Among the trends we’re seeing is an increasing focus on health and wellness, and many of the high-end cruise lines are investing heavily in on-board spas and other wellness experiences. Another trend has been the huge popularity of expedition cruising, where cruise lines have invested in new and more sophisticated ships that allow guests to reach extraordinary locations in luxury. Several of the established luxury operators are now offering expedition sailings aboard newly designed ships, which allows them to take their

own particular style of cruising into new regions like Antarctica or the remote tropics,” Katz concluded.

My last cruise was pre-COVID on the Rhône and Saône Rivers of France, following in the footsteps of Vincent Van Gogh and exploring historic towns and cities such as Arles, Avignon, Vienne, Chalonsur-Saône, Tournos, Cluny and Lyon. Achingly beautiful river scenes, ancient sites, glorious châteaux, centuries-old wineries and incredible culinary experiences will live long in my memory. And I hope these pages bring you similar inspiration to create your next travel memories.

Oh Vienna. Such a beautiful, elegant city with so much to see and do before or after your river cruise. Visit St Stephens Cathedral, the Imperial Palace – one of the biggest palace complexes in the world and home to the famous Spanish Riding School, and don’t miss Belvedere Palace and Schonbrunn. With its soaring spires and ethereal interiors, Barcelona’s Sagrada Familia is remarkable, on many levels. Designed by Antoni Gaudi, this breathtaking cathedral is one of a kind, and will finally be complete in 2026, 144 years after the cornerstone was laid. Gaudi’s whimsical genius can be seen elsewhere around the city including Park Güell, Casa Batlló, Casa Mila. In June 2024, she will arrive in the Mediterranean in readiness for a summer season of one of a kind itineraries.

With eight restaurants, an ice-cream bar, and 24-hour in-suite dining, the culinary experiences on Crystal’s exquisite ships, Crystal Serenity and Crystal Symphony, suit all tastes. Foodies will want to book in for Umi Uma, created by legendary Master Chef Nobuyuki (Nobu) Matsuhisa. A specialty dining offering, dishes are inspired by the Orient and served in an elegant, modern setting.

Nobu said: “Crystal is known for their awardwinning food and beverage program bringing an authentic dining experience with efficient and

personalised service, and we are proud to have Umi Uma feature our innovative fusion cuisine, blending traditional Japanese dishes with Peruvian ingredients."

Osteria d’Ovidio is another specialty dining experience, serving up a modern twist on traditional fine Italian cuisine, while Waterside offers classic American dishes that have been elevated with a contemporary twist. VIKING: MAMSEN’S

The chairman of Viking, Torstein Hagen, hails from Norway, and his pride for his country and culture is evident on every Viking ship – ocean, expedition, and river. To get a taste for Norway, head for Mamsen’s, which is located in the Explorer’s Lounge onboard Viking’s Ocean ships. Named after Ragnhild “Mamsen” Hagen, Torstein Hagen’s mother, Mamsen’s evokes all the pleasures of Norwegian culture, as well as authentic Scandinavian fare. Sample authentic tastes of Norway, starting with the traditional heart-shaped waffles served with typical Norwegian brown goat cheese, or delicious homemade jams, to smørbrød (open-faced sandwiches), and Norwegian specialty cakes and pastries. The Discovery Yacht difference

Project Evolution with Silversea

Silversea introduced the world's first low-emissions luxury cruise liner with advanced hybrid technology that utilises fuel cells, emitting zero harmful emissions while in port. This is an industry first. Silver Nova, the first of the Nova Class ships –with Silver Ray coming in 2024 – will feature hybrid technology for the vessel’s engines, which will be able to reduce carbon emissions through not only the use of LNG, but also by charging fuel cells and batteries to reduce the consumption of fuel whenever possible. Silver Nova will have three fuel sources, including a fuel cell system, battery technology, and dualfuel engines that use liquefied natural gas (LNG) as the main fuel. The new hybrid technology also allows Silver Nova to achieve a 40 per cent overall reduction in its greenhouse gas emissions per double suite.

Explora Journeys’ deep respect for the ocean is central to this new luxury lifestyle brand at sea. With Explora launching in 2023 and EXPLORA II in 2024, Explora Journeys will support and give back to noble environmental causes through the MSC Foundation. Environmental supporting technologies and emission control systems will be employed throughout including, but not limited to, provision for battery storage to allow future hybrid power generation, Ballast Water Treatments System, Smart heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems, RINA Dolphin Certificate reduced underwater noise, and Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology enabling a reduction in nitrogen emissions by 90 per cent. Destination experiences have been designed to leave a positive impression on the places and people visited by placing a spotlight on local talents, craftsmanship, culture, gastronomy, and traditions.

All about energy at Viking

Viking designs its ships to meet strict environmental standards. All Viking Longships are powered by true diesel-electric hybrid engines that meet stringent emission standards and reduce vibrations for a smooth ride. Shore power is also used when available along the rivers. Additionally, the vessels feature onboard solar panels and large organic herb gardens. Viking’s Small Ocean Ships have been designed with energy-efficient hull, propeller and rudder arrangements and engines with heat recovery systems. This makes the ships reach the best Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) in their class. Viking’s new Expedition Vessels feature an energy-efficient design that exceeds the EEDI requirements by nearly 36 per cent — more than any other expedition ship. Viking Octantis and Viking Polaris have received one of the industry’s first SilentE-Notation – the highest-level certification for quiet ship propulsion, minimising underwater noise pollution.

Sustainability is a core value at A&K Travel Group and Crystal. Refurbishing their ships is a significant step in their ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship. Since its relaunch in 2023, Crystal has removed single-use plastics from their ships and has introduced advanced waste management processes that exceed the legislated requirements. They have also saved a lot of energy by adding new frequency converters in engine rooms and AHU’s together with enthalpy wheels.

By upgrading Crystal Serenity and Crystal Symphony with state-of-the-art technologies, Crystal aims to reduce its carbon footprint and enhance energy efficiency, contributing to a more sustainable future for the cruise industry. Shore power connections were also installed, so the vessels can connect to shore connectivity and avoid burning fuel in ports that have this facility.
