Starstruck in Monaco

It may be a tiny principality, but Monaco is a glittering haven for fine cuisine, fabulous artworks and a fascinating history.

Casino Square ©Monte-Carlo Société des Bains de Mer

Day and night, Monaco is dazzling and lives up to its reputation as the golden-hued playground of the rich and famous. Blessed with 300 days of golden rays a year, Monaco might have bucketloads of swagger and sophistication, but it also has little local haunts and gorgeous beaches and is deserving of a multi-day stay on any European sojourn, or preor post-cruise. As for easy access, Monaco is less than 30 minutes by car – seven in a helicopter – from Nice International Airport.

Watch the passing parade of expensive Ferraris, Lamborghinis and Porsches arriving with well-heeled guests at the beautiful Place de Casino, the front entrance of the Casino de Monte Carlo. Or if superyachts are more likely to turn your head, visit the picturesque Port Hercule marina, with its berths full of sleek, extravagant superyachts. Port Hercule is within easy walking distance of many main attractions, including The Prince’s Palace –the official residence of the Sovereign Prince of Monaco, Prince Albert II, who is a proactive leader ensuring Monaco is a shining light for sustainability.

While Monaco is the most denselypopulated sovereign state in the world with an area of just over 2kms, it more than makes up for it in history, culture, entertainment and that charming Monegasque character.

We Recommend HÔTEL DE PARIS MONTE-CARLO

Sitting on Place du Casino, the iconic Hôtel de Paris Monte-Carlo offers guests an unparalleled experience, combining the magic of a legendary hotel with some exceptional things to see and do in Monaco, from the Jewellers’ Courtyard, Opéra Garnier, Casino de Monte-Carlo, Thermes Marins Monte-Carlo and much more.

Fancy feasts

Restaurant hopping is an adventure in Monaco, with the most Michelin-starred restaurants per square metre in the world as well as trendy and traditional cafes. Star chef Yannick Alléno’s newest restaurant Pavyllon Monte-Carlo, that is known for its slick gourmet counter cuisine, has recently been awarded its first Michelin star.

Located in the Hermitage Hotel, multiMichelin star chef, Alléno, who has a string of restaurants, creates memorable dishes that are fresh, light and made with the finest local ingredients.

Spectacular offerings also feature at the three Michelin star Le Louis XV by Alain Ducasse at the Hôtel de Paris MonteCarlo, known for its Riviera-inspired cuisine paired with wines from the legendary wine cellar.

Other Michelin star restaurants include La Table d’Antonio Salvatore and Blue Bay at Monte-Carlo Bay Hotel and Resort, Le Grill at Hôtel de Paris Monte-Carlo and Yoshi at the Hôtel Métropole Monte-Carlo with Les Ambassadeurs by Christophe Cussac at the Hôtel Métropole Monte-Carlo sure to be granted a star next year after opening in June.

"Have a drink at Cafe de Paris at about 6.00pm for people and car watching and if you are wanting to enter the Casino remember to take your passport. Shopping at Zara in Monaco is a must as they design a special range that is only sold there. The car museum is mind blowing, it is the Royal family's private collection."

Follow the new Rainier III Sculpture Trail through Monaco’s beautiful gardens, streets and squares where you will find 150 sculptures and fountains. The Trail was created to commemorate the centenary of Prince Rainier III’s birth.

Monaco has so many verdant parks and gardens, with 11,886 trees greening this centuries-old principality, including three Wollemi Pines, the ancient plant discovered west of the Blue Mountains in NSW. Prince Albert II planted them himself in the gardens of St Martin, Monaco’s first public garden.

In every neighbourhood there are hidden gems with outstanding works including Fontvieille, where César’s Le Poing and Bourdelle’s Grande Baigneuse Accroupie, can be found. The beautiful Princess Grace Rose Garden, located in the heart of the lush gardens of Fontvieille Park, is where Kees Verkade’s tribute to Princess Grace stands plus the Woman Smoking a Cigarette by Botero and Evolution by Emma de Sigaldi, the late 20th-century Monegasque sculptor.

On Place du Casino, Anish Kapoor’s  Sky Mirror is now one of Monte-Carlo’s iconic symbols.

Stroll around Monaco and come across local gems such as La Condamine Market where locals buy their produce or savour a drink at L'Orangerie distillery. Amble up the coastal path to Mala beach, people watch on the Le Corbusier promenade, or just soak up centuries of history as you meander in the Old Town, perhaps stopping at the Chocolaterie de Monaco, a chocolate and tea house for some tasty treats. Stop at Brasserie de Monaco at the port for a craft beer, or sip another Made in Monaco favourite, Maison du Limoncello.

Add to the list the plethora of world-class hotels, and you have the perfect destination.

The Art of Happiness

Club Med’s luxurious mountain escapes replace snow sport hassles with holiday highs.

Pausing on a French glacier, it seems as though the sky is being shredded into blue ribbons by mountain fang teeth ahead. Four thousand metre high crooked peaks crash and pile over another, tumbling from France to Switzerland in one direction and into Italy in the other. Completing the sense of being inside a snow dome, the world-class resort of Tignes is snuggled below like a diorama, and I take one last look before being lowered into a crevasse. Crevasse? That’s an unlikely snow globe feature, those yawning glacier gaps which can swallow you whole. Even more unexpected is that this is an alpine activity

option offered at Club Med Tignes. Once, clambering around high altitudes with a guide wouldn’t have been on the menu, but if you haven’t been to a Club Med lately buckle up, it’s evolved.

While their roots remain as experts in ‘The Art of Happiness’ (a concept coined by founder Gérard Blitz), after 65 years in the snow business they’ve divined that ‘happy-making’ moments are completely individualistic. Some seek mountain highs and dance floor thrills, others find their happy place with a fireside local Merlot or floating in the heated pool. We ski from first lift to last while some people on a

romantic couples’ holiday or multi-generational trip never ski at all, they just embrace the beauty and enchantment of the French Alps while in the lap of luxury with Club Med. There’s a mountain of choice but two things set this apart from any snow holiday we’ve ever had. Firstly, everything is included from delicious dinners overflowing with gourmet choices to lift tickets, but most importantly, it’s all so easy.

We Recommend

CLUB MED GRAND MASSIF CHALETS

Nailing the ‘zero friction’ brief

I first learnt about the ‘zero friction’ philosophy at Club Med La Rosière, a hidden gem of a resort hidden at the end of one of France’s most scenic valleys where just opening the window to the morning view is a soul soothing “ahhh” moment.

Snow sports can be a logistical mission, but as an employee points out, “You go to the ski room, the supervised Mini Club Med is on the way (if you have children), then you step from locker room to the slopes and up the chairlift in front. It’s seamless.”

What she’s forgotten to add is that when I first open the slopeside locker the latest skis, boots and poles are waiting, having been delivered according to my details uploaded on the app.

After an amazing day on the slopes, I slide to the ski room where an outdoor après party with DJ, charcuterie and champagne is set up the snow. If this is how the French live, I’m hooked.

When only the best will do

At Club Med, everything is seamless and thoughtful, with impeccable service. The alpine Club Med properties are enclaves of mountain chic, always in the best ski-in ski-out locations, with the most sought-after instructors and world-famous kids programs (ranging from Petit Club from 2 years, Mini Club from 4 - 10 years and teen-tastic Junior Club up to 17 years).

Yet each of the Club Med alpine properties – there are 25 Club Med snow resorts around the world – has a different personality; the Club Med Tignes Resort boasts drop dead glamour and the option of Exclusive Collection Space Suites with personalised concierge service, Club Med Alpe d’Huez feels like a cozy ski lodge complete with climbing walls and stylish Club Med La Rosière’s setting is incomparable.

But for next level intimate luxury, unwind in your private hot tub at the Chalet Apartments at Club Med Grand Massif Chalets (also stocked with boardgames and kid-size bathrobes) and at Club Med Valmorel Chalets feast on an in-chalet Savoyard fondue after an appetite-building snowshoe adventure. There are so many options, that each choose-yourown adventure decision ultimately leads to a trip that’s distinctly one of a kind.

"What an experience!!! Think thousands of kilometres of white, pristine, untouched snow. Fresh air and the most gourmet cuisine I have ever tasted. There was no request too large for the amazingly friendly multi-cultural staff. The all inclusive nature of the resort gave me a hasslefree luxurious winter vacation that I will never forget. Will I be back? 100 per cent is my answer!

Avoid the hassles of car hire and airports by going by train, ship or with one of our recommended tour partners.

Criss-crossing Switzerland on the aptly-named Panoramic Trains is the best type of scenic tour as they hum smoothly past the bluest of blue lakes, spectacular alpine peaks, waterfalls, pristine meadows with chalets complete with flowers spilling from balconies and cows with clanging cow bells. I can’t take my eyes off the vistas out the large windows of the Glacier Express, the GoldenPass Express, the Gotthard Panorama Express and the LucerneInterlaken Express, four of the five Panoramic Trains (the other being the Bernina Express), and every trip I take using my Swiss Travel Pass is superb and seamless … Swiss trains really do run like clockwork.

What’s on IN EUROPE

Europe knows how to party, and with myriad events set down for 2024, we have picked out some of our favourites.

Let’s face it. Europe is fabulous at any time of year. Snow lovers dream of skiing or snowboarding down creamy slopes in France, or Switzerland, Italy or Austria, while others want to wander in warmer climes, going for hikes in pure mountain air or just seeing the sites – historic, architectural or natural – partaking in culinary or wine immersions or following sporting pursuits.

If you want to beat the crowds, travel in low or shoulder seasons – not in peak time –avoid European school holiday periods, or if you need to go in peak time, book a tour well ahead with our travel advisors –who can do all the hard work for you and take the stress out of it.

To help you plan your 2024 European adventure, we have come up with a calendar of events for each month of the year, covering all kinds of interests for events big –Olympic-sized– and small. Whenever you choose to go, check out all the events on offer to add to your Europe experience.
