„ Certain limitations on a manufacturers access to a dealers proprietary business information. The HADA discussions with the manufacturers have been fruitful. ModiďŹ cations to the language have been made and accepted by both manufacturers and dealers. One manufacturer’s representative commented on the professionalism and respect shown by Hawaii dealers during the process. Much thanks goes to the legislators who sponsored the HADA-proposed legislation (SB2490 and HB2433). These legislators are recognized in the Dealer Day at the Capitol pictorial section in this edition. Also much thanks goes to the HADA legislative committee, chaired by Brad Nicolai and Wayne De Luz, with executive/legislative committee members joining me, including Eric Fukunaga, Stan Masamitsu, Kenny Ching, Bill van den Hurk and John Uekawa. HADA much appreciates the contributions of the representatives of the Alliance of Auto Manufacturers and the Global Automakers and to the members of the Motor Vehicle Industry Licensing Board. Much thanks too to Jason Allen and Rich Sox of Bass Sox Mercer. The measure still has multiple conference committee hearings ahead. CARS ARE CONNECTED 2018 First Hawaiian International Auto Show Showcases the Future of Auto Technology By David Rolf
Cars are connected—soon to just about everything. To the Internet of Things. To the electric grid. To the economy. To the tax base. To housing development and city planning. To energy resource development (hydrogen). To education. To retail development. To artiďŹ cial intelligence. To broadband development. It seems to just about everything. shows how the auto show is playing a role in helping Hawaii understand all the changes that are coming to transportation, and by extension, just about everything. The graphic that explains just about EVERYTHING is our Rosetta Stone. A single page that unlocks the secrets of the future in Hawaii, much like the actual Rosetta Stone, found in 1799 near the town
Showgoers experience meaningful encounters with hundreds of cars and trucks.
of Rosetta, unlocked the secrets of the Egyptian past by decoding hieroglyphics. If one wonders why I put the word JOY on the graph and used Eulers Identity (the famous formula) to explain it, it’s because the transition to all the new technology is going to be so hard we thought it might as well be joyful.
JN Automotive owner, Brad Nicolai, the developer of the Velocity group of dealerships on Kapiolani Boulevard has provided, as a feature for the show, a Ferrari Formula One racer. It’s the most beautiful machine I have ever seen.
And the First Hawaiian International Auto Show is the opportunity for Hawaii to learn how the car is playing a large role in bringing everything together.
Its the yin and yang of beauty and performance. With a seemingly delicate front end but monster back end. It can take turns like it was on a train track but accelerates like it came out of a cannon muzzle.
That’s because the car, in many ways, is tied to just about everything.
It’s a delight to be able to get up close to a machine like this.
It is amazing the insights that an auto show provides for everyone looking to buy a new car or truck, of course, but also to public policy makers looking to make policy for the future of Hawaii.
Showgoers experience an even more meaningful encounter with hundreds of cars and trucks by sitting in and examining the interiors, feeling the fine leather upholstery in some, running a hand over the dash.
Commerce is like air, without it there is no life.
“Experience” is a word that describes the auto show.
The auto show is an exhibit of 350 cars and trucks in a non-selling environment, set in one of the most beautiful venues for car displays in the world—the Hawaii Convention Center.
Back in 1977, First Hawaiian Bank’s Walter Dods, Jr., then the Executive Vice President in Retail Banking Group, and later Chairman and CEO, came up with the idea of putting together an auto show. He talked to some dealers and got some additional commitments especially after the bank placed a full page ad in the newspaper. The show was first held in the Blaisdell Exhibit Hall. The auto show paid off in commerce in
The convention center is an architectural masterpiece that provides a glass-fronted display case for what I would call this year, some of the worlds most magnificent machines.

that within few years First Hawaiian Bank had the largest market share of new car loans provided by banks. In the year 2000, Joe Nicolai, the then president of the Hawaii Automobile Dealers Association, helped move the show to the beautiful Hawaii Convention Center, which had 200,000 square feet of exhibit hall, about twice the size of the 100,000 square feet being used at the Blaisdell, including outside tents. With the move to the larger exhibit venue, HADA became actively involved and contracted with Motor Trend Auto Shows, Inc. to help produce the event, and it became like many of the auto manufacturersupported auto shows around the country. Today the show is considered an “(auto) manufacturers show” and product experts are available in many exhibits along with traveling auto show exhibit materials that add to the experience for the attendee. First Hawaiian Bank continues as the show title sponsor, The Honolulu Star-Advertiser is the media sponsor, and this year, for the first time, the show has a fuel sponsor, Texaco, which is providing a test drive for kids in battery-powered cars. The show celebrates its 40th Anniversary this year, by recognizing Walter Dods, Jr. and Joe Nicolai and other HADA legacy dealers at a special event preceding the opening of the show.

Broadband Small Wave Wireless Technology Being Brought to Hawaii This 5G LTE technology (5th Generation Long Term Evolution) will play a large role in the development of autonomous vehicles. A variety of national companies will be vying for rights to place 5G antennas on 10,000 of the State and City’s 40,000 utility poles on Oahu. A bill in this year’s session, HB2651, relating to wireless broadband facilities, has moved through all of its subject matter committees, and is likely to soon become law. Most of us are familiar with 4G wireless which our smart phones operate on. These towers are up to 10 miles apart. The speeds of 5G, however, are 10-fold faster, and require towers between 400 and 1000 feet apart. This 5G implementation, which can take place in 24-36 months, will open up a whole new world of connectivity, of which the car will be playing a major role. It is said that the information passing into the internet’s cloud from self-driving cars by 2025 will be 10 exabytes—this is the equivalence of all the spoken words uttered by humankind since the beginning of time. Connected Autonomous Vehicles (CAVs) will utilize this technology. Hawaii and the world will experience a dramatic change. The car is connected to it all.
