Electric vehicle test drives and classic vehicles made for a unique mix this year Congratulations to all who made this year’s First Hawaiian International Auto Show a success. The number of pre-production 2020 vehicles provided by automakers for the show floor was extraordinary this year—including the 2020 Ford Explorer, the 2020 Toyota Sequoia, the 2020 Kia Telluride, the 2020 Jeep Gladiator and 2020 Lamborghini Urus. There also was enthusiasm for the HECO and Ulupono-sponsored electric vehicle test drives. These totaled a whopping 394 drives, by the way, with a significant percentage of drivers asking for email follow-up. This year’s show featured the unique aspect of one of our HADA members celebrating 100 years in the automotive business in Hawaii with their special 1919 Wailua edition vehicles on the floor, Servco, while at the same time, continuing to introduce hydrogen fuel cell technology. With the Pali tunnel closed at times for repairs due to rock slides there was a reduced number of Windward car club participants. This late development, right before the days of the show opening, caused Motor Trend to shift all the clubs on to the main floor this year…creating a crowd-pleasing “mad mix” of historically popular classic vehicles displayed next to the new technology-loaded 2019 and 2020 cars and trucks. This year’s sharply-targeted auto show media buy produced an increase in new car purchase “intenders.” For the data, see the post-show survey report on page 16. It was indeed a great show this year. HADA extends our deepest gratitude to all the auto manufacturers, auto dealers and dealer ad groups, and our sponsors who made this year’s show such a success.

The EV line-up at the show is shown with the statue Kane. A century ago this area of Waikiki was a vast marshland fed by the life-giving waters of Kane that flowed from its streams and springs. Kane was the Hawaiian god of water and thus human life, and the most powerful of the gods. The waterfall flowing from Kane’s hands is fed by the stream that flows through the Mahealani (the Convention Center’s roof garden) and symbolizes the heavenly origins of humankind’s most precious resource. The Hawaii Convention Center, filled with fine art and murals on its walls, was the perfect venue for 350 examples of automative “art.”

This year’s sharply targeted auto show media buy produced an increase in new car purchase “intenders” Broadcast media buying has become more and more data and targeted-audience driven. This year Ad Strategies, the media buying company for the show, focused on new car purchase intenders—those show attendees who “intend to own a new car in the next 12 months.” The focus this year, thus was shifted from a raw attendance-figure driven media buy to a focus on new-car purchasers. From the recent post-auto show survey data, along with the historical data, the surveys show the successful results of the shift in that media buy philosophy…. Show Show Show Show

in in in in

2019— 55% of attendees indicated they would own a new car in the next 12 months. 2018— 48% of attendees indicated they would own a new car in the next 12 months. 2017— Did not survey that year 2016–- 40% of attendees indicated they would own a new car in the next 12 months.

This increase in “intenders” corresponds to the positive reports we heard about this year’s auto show being one that had an “enriched” number of car shoppers. Much thanks to all who made this year’s 2019 First Hawaiian International Auto Show such a success.

ost beautiful in the U.S.”

Some 200,000 square feet of gleaming exhibit hall floor, 2 days prior to opening, awaits carpet, show exhibit materials, and 350 gleaming vehicles from the domestic and international auto manufacturers.

A 2020 (preproduction) Jeep Gladiator was complimentary shipped to the show by Matson. Note: Both Matson and Pasha, longtime HADA associate members, each have provided 6 round trip West Coast to Hawaii slots on their ocean-going vessels each year, for pre-production models and feature vehicles being brought in for the show. The Rubicon is shown here as the KHON news sets up to interview Cutter Jeep representatives Isaac Madrid and Chris Weaver prior to the start of the show. Many auto manufacturers have taken advantage of this special offer.

Motor Trend’s Steve Freeman briefed the HADA board of directors on the arrangements for the test drives. The MidWeek cover story and the Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s colorful multi-page auto section were provided for all board members to review.

17

Aloha Kia owner, Bill van den Hurk is shown on the screen inset being interviewed on the 2020 Telluride (another of the extraordinary preproduction models what were shipped in for the show). In addition to the pre-production Telluride, Kia also sent a 2019 preproduction NIRO EV Crossover.

Motor Trend features editor Scott Evans was flown in to provide insights for the many media interviews.

The oldest car at the show…a 1910 Ford Model T.

Newspaper story and special section coverage included…a cover story in MidWeek, a special multi-page auto section in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser along with several advance newspaper stories. The total broadcast story count for the auto show was 72 stories. With a Nielsen audience count of 719,751 viewers and listeners. Total runtime for stories was 3 hours, 23 minutes and 26 seconds. KITV reporter MacKenzie Stasko interviews Velocity’s Greg Jackson prior to taking the Lamborghini Huracan for a spin around the block.

The 2019 Ford GT350 Mustang—with Bullit badge, acknowledging a connection to the famed 1968 movie starring Steve McQueen—was of interest to fans of the movie and the Mustang.

18

KITV reporter Lei Kaholokula enjoyed a moment with the Shelby Cobra exhibit.

Nissan’s bright NSX drew great crowds.

The show made for a great family outing. Ross Gasper, right, later bought a Toyota 1919 Wailea edition truck he saw for the first time at the show.

Crowds extending back to the ticket booths lined up for the opening hour on Friday.

Nori Fujimoto (2nd from left with family) hit the jackpot at the iHeartmedia tent & won airfare/hotel/ tickets to the iHeartRadio Music Festival in Las Vegas September 20th courtesy of Vacations Hawaii and The Newly Remodeled California Hotel & Casino.

Things turned zany during many of the advance radio show interviews. Here Motor Trend’s Allen Chin, far left, participates in the antics with IHeart’s Island 98.5 morning hosts.

The Auto Show Immersion Report had Hawaii’s show ranking with the U.S. global market shows in “influence” on local market The 2018 McKinsey Report on Hawaii’s auto show, commissioned by Motor Trend Auto Shows, indicated that Hawaii’s show had influence on its market which was similar to the U.S. “global shows” including New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and Detroit, which collectively showed a 30% “influence” on the cars purchased in those markets. The First Hawaiian International Auto Show’s “influence” on the market level was 28%—closely approximating the large influence experienced by the U.S. global shows. The conclusion could be summed as this: For a regional show—Hawaii’s show produces a level of market influence on new car buyers similar to the global shows.
