CULTURAL INSTALLATIONS If you are looking to get cultured on your vacation, visit Kings’ Shops and immerse yourself in one of the new cultural installations around the center created in partnership with the Bishop Museum. Learn about topics such as volcanoes, the natural history of Mauna Kea, the ancient village of Anaeho’omalu, types of lava and other topics through interpretive graphic panels with images from the Bishop Museum Library & Archives and ‘lelo no‘eau (Hawaiian proverbs and poetical sayings). For the volcano buffs, experience a hands on display of different types of lava from Hawaiian volcanoes, or get some perspective through the 3D model of the northwest portion of Hawai‘i island, which highlights numerous points of interest including the volcanoes of Hualālai, Mauna Kea, Mauna Loa, and Kohala, as well as important historical locations such as Mo‘okini Heiau (birthplace of Kamehameha I) and Pu‘ukoholā Heiau (a war temple built by Kamehameha as he was consolidating his rule over the island chain). If you are intrigued by the magical dance of hula, a Bishop Museum exhibit on the people and places of hula includes hula implements with images from the Bishop Museum Library & Archives along with a video screen featuring a documentary on hula that is not to be missed. kingsshops.com

GUIDED PETROGLYPH TOUR Kii pohaku (petroglyphs, literally “rock pictures”) may be the closest thing to a written language that Hawaiians used, and some are thought to be astronomical symbols, road signs or markers of historic events. Join expert Michaela Larson for a moderate 1-hour walk back through Hawai‘i’s fascinating history, and see for yourself. If you visit the petroglyphs on your own, please respect this culturally sensitive area. Stay on the trail and do not approach the petroglyphs for photos or rubbings without permission of Waikoloa Security. These are fragile carvings, possibly thousands of years old, easily subject to damage and erosion. The best way to capture a petroglyph is with a photo in the late afternoon, when the shadows are long. Location: Meet lakeside next to Island Fish and Chips at 9:30am on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Lava trails are uneven and rough. Wearing closed-toe walking shoes, sunscreen and hats are highly recommended. Don’t forget a camera and water.
